Politics / Alleged Money Laundering: Court Throws Out Case Against Atiku’s Son-in-law by agwom(m): 6:24pm On Dec 21, 2020 |
Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke sitting at a Federal High Court in Lagos on Monday has discharged Abdullahi Babalele, a son-in-law to former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar of a two-count allegation of alleged laundering of $140,000. The court threw out the charge file by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on the ground of territorial jurisdiction. Senate passes N13.5 trillion 2021 budget Maiduguri-Damaturu abductions : Zulum visits Jakana village He held that the charge against the defendant ought not to have been filed in Lagos when the alleged offence was said to have been committed in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital. The Judge relied on the Supreme Court’s decision in a case between the EFCC and Mohammed Dele Belgore on territorial jurisdiction. Babalele was arraigned in 2018 and then re-arraigned on October 8, 2019. The EFFC accused Babalele of giving former President Olusegun Obasanjo $140,000 on the instruction of Abubakar, who was vying for the office of president in 2019. He pleaded not guilty on each occasion. The trial commenced and the prosecution called two witnesses and tendered several documents that were admitted in evidence, before closing its case against the defendant on November 25, 2020. At the last hearing on December 7, Babalele’s counsel, Chief Mike Ozekhome SAN, filed a no-case submission praying the court to dismiss the charge. https://dailytrust.com/alleged-money-laundering-court-throws-out-case-against-atikus-son-in-law |

Politics / UN Demands ‘immediate, Unconditional’ Release Of Katsina Schoolboys by agwom(m): 6:06pm On Dec 14, 2020 |
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for the “immediate and unconditional” release of no fewer than 300 male students, the attackers reportedly abducted by bandits at the Government Science Secondary School, Kankara in Katsina State on Dec. 11. Guterres’ reaction came in a statement by UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric on Monday in New York. “The secretary-general strongly condemns the Dec. 11 attack on a secondary school in Katsina State, Nigeria and the reported abduction of hundreds of boys by suspected armed bandits. “He calls for the immediate and unconditional release of the abducted children and for their safe return to their families. “The secretary-general reiterates that attacks on schools and other educational facilities constitute a grave violation of human rights.” The UN chief urged security agencies to arrest and bring those responsible for the heinous act to justice. He reaffirmed the “solidarity and support” of the organisation to the Federal Government and Nigerians in their fight “against terror, violent extremism and organised crime”. The UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has also flayed the abduction and called for the boys’ immediate release. In a statement, the agency said it is “deeply concerned about these acts of violence”, describing attacks on schools as a violation of children’s rights. “UNICEF condemns in the strongest possible terms this brutal attack and calls for the immediate and unconditional release of all children and their return to their families.” Its Regional Director for West and Central Africa, Marie-Pierre Poirier, issued a separate statement expressing solidarity with the families of the students and their communities. Poitier said that the violence was a “grim reminder” that abductions of children and widespread grave violations of children’s rights continue to take place in the northern part of Nigeria. “Children should feel safe at home, in schools and in their playgrounds at all times. “We stand with the families of the missing children and the community affected by this horrifying event,” she said. Politics / Buhari Doing Well Despite Security Challenges – Sheikh Jingir by agwom(m): 5:39am On Dec 14, 2020 |
The National Chairman of Ulama’u Council of Jama’atu Izalatil Bid’a Waikamatis Sunnah (JIBWIS), Sheikh Sani Yahaya Jingir, has said that President Muhammadu Buhari performed better than his predecessors despite the country’s security challenge. The cleric stated this weekend during the JIBWIS 24th National Qur’an Recitation Competition in Gombe. “We have serious security challenges in the country but I believe that the current situation is still better than the previous ones when people were afraid of mingling with one another in any gathering. I am not saying everything is fine, but there is an improvement in the security situation,” he said. Sheikh Jingir, however, called on the president to re-strategise and fight criminality wholeheartedly. Meanwhile a political group, Buhari/Osinbajo Campaign Organisation (BOCO), has called on Nigerians to continue to support President Buhari-led government, insisting that the Federal Government was doing its best to tackle the numerous challenges facing the country. The group’s national chairman, Isa Aminu Bayero, in a statement yesterday, urged Nigerians to endure and appreciate the efforts being made by the Buhari administration to curtail the menace of some unpatriotic elements trying to sabotage the meaningful progress of his government. https://dailytrust.com/buhari-doing-well-despite-security-challenges-sheikh-jingir 1 Like |

Politics / Bandits Disrupt Voting In Zamfara By-election by agwom(m): 1:05pm On Dec 05, 2020 |
Suspected armed bandits on Saturday disrupted the voting process during the State Assembly election in Oroji village in Rini ward of Bakura local government area of Zamfara state. A voter identified as Suleiman Muhammad Rini told Daily Trust that at about 8:30 am when election officials arrived at the polling unit for voting proper to start, a group of armed men suddenly appeared from a forest and headed to the polling unit. “We, including the election officials scampered for safety. However, security operatives including police and soldiers were alerted and they quickly mobilized to the area. They successfully dislodge the armed criminals and voting has since started,” he said. Meanwhile, security operatives had to fire gunshots into the air in order to restore law and order at the Shiyyar Galadima 008 polling units in Rini village. There was also an attempt to create chaos by the thugs at the polling units but security operatives arrived immediately and rounded off the suspected thugs. Trouble started when the state commissioner for local government and chieftaincy affairs, Alhaji Yahaya Chado Gora, ex-commissioner for local government and chieftaincy affairs, Alhaji Muttaka Rini, and the state PDP zonal vice chairwoman Hajiya A’i Maradun arrived at the polling unit. However, law and order eventually restored and voting continued. https://dailytrust.com/bandits-disrupt-voting-in-zamfara-by-election |
Politics / Boko Haram Kills 657 Civilians, 592 Officials In 11 Months by agwom(m): 8:26am On Dec 05, 2020 |
No fewer than 657 civilians have been killed by the Boko Haram in the last 11 months, a tally by Daily Trust and an international agency has shown. The terrorists have also killed 592 state actors including security operatives, government officials, humanitarian workers, civilian task force, and others. This brings the number of people killed to 1,249. Thousands of people have been killed by the Boko Haram terrorists in the last 11 years, and like some of those that occurred this year, many killings are hardly reported by the media because of some obvious reasons. As the year 2021 is inching closer, many families, especially in Borno and Yobe states would live to remember 2020 as an ugly one that deprived them of their loved ones. The Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) in its Nigeria Security Tracker shows that 657 civilians have been killed by Boko Haram between January and November 2020. The CFR’s Nigeria Security Tracker is an effort to catalogue and map political violence based on a weekly survey of the Nigerian and international press. CFR is a nonpartisan membership organisation, founded in 1921, that works on providing a resource for its members; government officials, journalists and other interested citizens to help them better understand the world. The council, which relied on press reports of violence in its report, noted that there is a dearth of accurate reporting across certain regions, death tolls are imprecise, and accounts of incidents vary. The tracker showed that 179 civilians were killed in June – the highest in 2020, followed by November with 130, while 81 and 52 civilian deaths were recorded in January and August respectively. March had the least with 13 deaths followed by April with 24. However, newspaper reports compiled by Daily Trust Saturday showed that 396 people were killed by Boko Haram under the period in review. “There is the potential for political manipulation of the media. Given these limitations, the NST makes every effort to collect information from multiple sources. Nevertheless, NST statistics should be viewed as indicative rather than definitive,” the council said on its website, adding that the Nigeria Security Tracker was edited by Ralph Bunche Senior Fellow for Africa Studies, John Campbell. As the council reported, this number, however, could rise as several cases were either unreported or exact number of causalities unknown as was the case with the farmers killed in Zabarmari, Jere Local Government Area of Borno State which fuelled calls for President Muhammadu Buhari to sack the service chiefs. There have also been calls in some quarters for the resignation of the president due to the growing insecurity in the country. The presidency described such calls as irresponsible. Nightmares of Borno residents Victims and survivors of insurgency in Borno State live with shattered dreams and sleepless nights from gory images of how their loved ones were killed. A lecturer with the University of Maiduguri, Musa Aji, said his pregnant wife and father-in-law were shot dead by the insurgents in separate incidences. “I always remember the memories of my late wife,” he said. He lives with the memory that his wife and unborn child died because of his profession as he was the prime target. According to him, “The insurgents killed my wife because they suspected she aided my escape. “I have two wives living in separate areas in Maiduguri. I was not in the house of the deceased wife when they came and asked for me. She told them I was not around but when she discovered their identity and mission, she warned me to stay away otherwise they would lay in wait and kill me and I heeded her advice,” he said. The lecturer sought refuge at the university where the authorities offered him accommodation at a guest house and a few days later, the killers returned to the house and requested to know his whereabouts from his pregnant wife. “She called and said the same individuals returned and asked for me and she told them I was not around and they left,” he said. However, when the insurgents discovered that the woman had revealed their identity to her husband, they resolved to kill her. “They were at my house two weeks after their first visit but my wife told them I was not in. They probably assumed she shielded me from an attack after discovering who they were and they opened fire on her. “It was hard for me; she was pregnant when she was killed and left behind six children. It took time to unite the kids with my second wife,” he said. The father of the deceased woman, according to the university don, who was an assistant comptroller with the Nigeria Correctional Service, was shot dead in front of his house where he was sleeping on a mat. “He was killed six months before his daughter,” he said. According to him, there was no end in sight to the insurgency despite the concerted efforts of the authorities and there was the need to involve the community members in counterinsurgency. Another survivor of Boko Haram attack in Baga, Ibrahim Modu, said he has not seen his 11-year-old son since a major attack was launched on the town on January 3, 2014. “My son who had just completed basic education disappeared in that attack and I have not heard anything about him since then. Many drowned in the lake while dozens were killed,” he said. https://dailytrust.com/b-haram-kills-657-civilians-592-officials-in-11-months |

Politics / Borno Massacre: DHQ Dismisses Un’s Report, Insists Only 43 Slaughtered by agwom(m): 1:03pm On Nov 30, 2020 |
The Defence Headquarters, on Monday, denied the report released by the United Nations that no fewer than 110 civilians were slaughtered by Boko Haram terrorists during Saturday’s attack on farmers in the Jere Local Government Area of Borno State. The Coordinator, Defence Media Operations, Maj. Gen. John Enenche, who appeared on Channels Television’s morning show: Sunrise Daily, maintained that only 43 rice farmers were murdered contrary to the UN’s report. According to him, as of Monday morning, 43 corpses were recovered from the incident scene in the Zabarmari area, adding that the troops counted the corpses together with the locals and 43 deaths were recorded. Daily Trust had reported that death toll recorded from the incident has now hit 110 according to the UN’s report – a situation that has renewed calls for the sack of service chiefs. Speaking further on the programme monitored by our correspondent, Enenche explained that he contacted the field commandants to give him the synopsis of what happened, noting that search for more remains of victims is still on. He said, “I knew it (the issue) is going to come up particularly because it is coming from the United Nations and not a source that does not want to be identified. This is a source that has identified itself that a 110 specifically (were murdered). “They gave me a synopsis of what happened. When the governor was to go (to the scene) and after they had recovered the dead, the troops had to move in there and they counted 43. Of course, some people ran into the bush and they started coming back and trickling in. “As at 2pm yesterday (Sunday), I called them and they got back to me at about 7 pm yesterday, still counting, looking if they will recover (more corpses). We call it Exploitation after Action Review. “Probably we may count up to the figure he (Kallon) gave in the future but as it is now, what we have counted with the locals is still 43 and we are hoping that we don’t get beyond that. This is the real situation. I did not sleep, we had to follow it because this is very relevant coming from the United Nations.” https://dailytrust.com/borno-massacre-dhq-dismisses-uns-report-insists-only-43-slaughtered |

Politics / Borno Massacre: Death Toll Hits 110 As 43 Buried by agwom(m): 7:31am On Nov 30, 2020 |
Olatunji Omirin, Maiduguri The number of rice farmers slaughtered by Boko Haram fighters on Saturday at Koshobe village near Maiduguri has hit 110, the United Nations Office in Nigeria, said Sunday hours after 43 of the victims were buried. Humanitarian agencies said more bodies of the Zabarmari villagers killed by the insurgents in rice fields were being recovered from far-flung areas. Edward Kallon, the United Nations Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, said in a statement on Sunday that over 110 farmers were killed by the Boko Haram assailants on Saturday. Kallon, who is also the Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme in Nigeria, said they were devastated by the killing of the vulnerable civilians. It was learnt that the 43 bodies recovered from one of the scenes of Saturday’s carnage were the ones buried at the first instance, with officials saying more bodies would be buried in the coming days. The governor attends the funeral prayer The 43 were buried at the Zabarmari cemetery, their ancestral home, amidst wailing by their loved ones and acquaintances. There has been outrage over the incident by citizens, who have expressed frustration over the continuous killings across the country. Most of them took to social media to condemn the act and call on the government to take a decisive action against criminals. The Borno attack is coming after about two weeks of continuous kidnappings and killings across the country, with the north being the worst hit region. A development which caused the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, to describe the north as the worst place to live in now. The Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere and that of the northern region, Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) also condemned the attacks, calling on the government to protect citizens. Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari has condemned the killings. In a statement through his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, the president described the act as dastardly, saying the government had given the armed forces the needed support to protect the country’s population and its territory. Mallam Abubakar Yunus, who lost two of his sons to the ungodly act, said he was arrested along with his children and that they were slaughtered in his presence. “People were working on their farms. At our site, the whole thing started at about 10.30 am when the Boko Haram fighters, armed with guns, came wearing army uniforms and surrounded us. “They slaughtered my sons in my presence and one of them asked me who they were to me! I replied that they were my children. I am still in shock as to how people could be that heartless,” he said. Another source said it was the productive population in the community that was decimated. https://dailytrust.com/borno-massacre-death-toll-hits-110-as-43-buried |
