President Muhammadu Buhari will today meet with governors of the All Progressives Congress in his country home of Daura, Katsina State. Sources hinted yesterday that the president might tell the governors whether or not he would contest the 2019 presidential elections. President Buhari yesterday evening arrived Daura on a private visit after a working visit to Kaduna State. His visit to Daura is believed to be connected to last week’s death of two members of his family. Some governors of the APC, ministers and various groups had expressed support to the president should he decide to seek re-election in 2019. A former president, Olusegun Obasanjo and former military president, Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida had in separate statements, advised Buhari against seeking re-election. The president had last week appointed a national leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to reconcile aggrieved members of the party. A source said the president and the governors were earlier scheduled to meet at the Presidential Villa in Abuja today, but that the meeting was rescheduled to take place in Daura since Buhari had gone there. The source, who pleaded anonymity, said “very serious political developments,” would be discussed at the meeting. He said it was very likely that the president would inform the governors of his intention to run for the 2019 presidential election or not. The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, confirmed to our correspondent on telephone that Buhari would meet the governors in Daura today. “Yes, that is very correct,” Shehu said. He, however, declined comment on the agenda of the meeting. Also, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, said whatever meeting the president has with anyone in Daura would be a private one. https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/2019-buhari-meets-apc-govs-in-daura-today.html

The Catholic Archbishop of Abuja Dioceses, John Cardinal Onaiyekan, on Thursday in Abuja, advised the Federal Government to sanction perpetrators of hate speech in the country. Onaiyekan gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the sideline of International Conference on “Love and Tolerance: Countering Violent Extremism,’’ organised by UFUK Dialogue Foundation. Onaiyekan said that it was irresponsible for any politician or religious leader to turn Nigerians against one another in the name of canvassing for support by all means. He admonished perpetrators of hate speech to understand that if they destroyed the nation, there would be nothing left for them to rule. He advised politicians to embrace issue based campaign to ensure healthy rivalry in the forthcoming 2019 general elections. Onaiyekan said it was politicians that did not have programme or clear ideas about what to do for the people that resort to hate speech because it was the easiest thing to do. He, therefore, urged politicians to use their brain positively to come up with workable solutions to the nation’s socio-economic and political problems instead of promoting hatred among Nigerians. The archbishop warned that any politician who had nothing to offer for progress and development of Nigeria should give way to those that could move the country forward. “ Any politician that goes around spreading hate speech should be caution and should be sanction because it is irresponsible to turn Nigerians against one another. “ Even if you want votes by all means at the end of the day if you destroy the nation there is nothing left to rule. “ Politicians should put on their thinking cap to tell us what they are going to do take Nigeria out of our present problems. “ If they cannot do that they should shut up and let others do it, “ he said. The cleric appealed to all Nigerians to play the role of spreading good messages to counter the amount of so many bad messages going out. “ We all know the good thing but it is only that we don’t have the energy to carry them out, “ Onaiyekan said. |
South African President Jacob Zuma resigned on Wednesday, bringing to a close a nine-year tenure that has been dogged by corruption scandals and seen a steady decline in the popularity of the African National Congress, Nelson Mandela’s historic liberation movement. Read Zuma's full statement below: Statement of the president of the Republic of South Africa, Jacob Zuma on the decision of the African National Congress to recall him Members of the Media, present here Fellow South Africans, I address you after weeks of speculation about my future as President of the Republic of South Africa. In particular, I make reference to the much publicized and awaited decision of the African National Congress issued on 13 February 2018. It is now public knowledge that the National Executive Committee of the ANC resolved to recall me as the President of the Republic. I have also learned that, before I respond to the initial decision, a new decision has been made by the ANC, whose effect is that I have now been compelled to resign by way of a motion of no confidence, set down for tomorrow, 15 February 2018. The ANC is indeed the party on whose nomination I became a candidate for the Presidency of the Republic of South Africa after its victory of the national elections of 2014. It was on the ANC’s nomination that I was later elected by the majority in the National Assembly as the President of the Republic. I am forever indebted to the ANC, the liberation movement I have served almost all my life. I respect each member and leader of this glorious movement. I respect its gallant fight against centuries of white minority brutality, whose relics remain today and continue to be entrenched in all manner of sophisticated ways, in order to ensure the continued survival of white privilege. I do take seriously and am grateful to the ANC that, in the face of its revolutionary mission to ensure a better life for all and the creation of a non-racial, non-sexist and democratic South Africa, it deployed me at the pinnacle of its role in government. I was also elected in terms of section 86 of the Constitution and from that moment pledged my loyalty to the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa. It has indeed been a great learning experience, a mammoth task, the performance of which can never be done without difficulty and learning on the way. None of us, no matter how perfect, can claim that the building of a new society and the marshalling of a former liberation movement into a modern political party all happen in a straight line. It has detours, human error and boulders strewn along the path. Because the struggle and politics are human activities, their pursuit is not without the taints of human nature. All my life, I have served and will continue to serve the ANC in its pursuit of the objectives of the National Democratic Revolution. I serve in my capacity as President of the Republic of South Africa within the prism of our much acclaimed Constitution, whose foundational values I fully subscribe to. I understand fully that while I serve at the pleasure of my party, the ANC, the door through which I officially came to serve the people of South Africa is the National Assembly, without which no political party can impose its candidate on the electorate, no matter how popular. This Constitutional line between Party and State is often forgotten in the usual business of party political contestations. As we fight our own battles in the corridors of political power, and sometimes serving the very interests of the oppressors of yesteryear, who joyfully celebrate as we lynch one another, we often forget the citizens on whose behalf we create a better life. We tend to place the political party above the supreme law of the country, which is the rule book for the country’s political engagement. I do not make this reference because I am above reproach. Nor do I wish to proclaim that in undertaking my political responsibilities I have been the epitome of perfection. If truth be told, none of us are. However, I respect the prescripts of the Constitution and its consequences on how we enter, stay in and exit political office and Government. There has been much speculation about how the President of the Republic should exit his or her office. In my case, some have even dared to suggest that one’s perks and post-service benefits should determine how one chooses to vacate public office. Often these concerns about perks and benefits are raised by the very same people seeking to speak as paragons of virtue and all things constitutional. Some even suggest that the relevant constitutional provisions, sections 89 and 102, in terms of which the President should be removed from office, would constitute an embarrassment or humiliation. For that reason, various suggestions are made to help leaders avoid this constitutional route of vacating political office without perks. If we avail ourselves to serve in terms of the Constitution, we should be prepared, if needs be, and if those we serve deem it appropriate, to suffer the hardship that comes with our constitutional obligations. Whether we lose our post-political office benefits, should not determine how we act in the time of our departure. Nor did I agree to serve because there are no better cadres in the ANC and the country. Most importantly, I did not agree to serve in order to exit with perks and benefits of the Office of the President. It is my Party that placed me before the representatives of the people in the National Assembly to be elected. It is my Party that availed me to serve on the basis of the Constitution as the supreme law of the land. Make no mistake, No leader should stay beyond the time determined by the people they serve. Most importantly, no leader should seek an easy way out simply because they could not face life at the end of their term without the perks that come with their political office. I do not fear exiting political office. However, I have only asked my party to articulate my transgressions and the reason for its immediate instruction that I vacate office. This was important in view of the discussions I held with the President and Secretary General of the Party that were aimed at uniting our organization, the ANC. It is indeed true that there was an agreement, that even if the need arises that I should vacate the office before the end of term, there is a need to have a period of transition, during which I would delegate some of the functions to the Deputy President of the Republic. Of course, I must accept that if my Party and my compatriots wish that I be removed from office, they must exercise that right and do so in the manner prescribed by the Constitution. I fear no motion of no confidence or impeachment, for they are the lawful mechanisms for the people of this beautiful country to remove their President. I have served the people of South Africa to the best of my abilities. I am forever grateful that they trusted me with their Highest Office in the land. But when I accepted the deployment, I undertook to subject myself to the supreme law of the land, the Constitution. Ngithanda ukusho ukuthi kwizinkalo ngezinkalo lapho abantu bakithi bekhona, ngokuzithoba okungenamkhawulo kusemqoka ukunazisa ukuthi angidaze nkani okweselesele. Kunjalo nje angexwaye kwehla esikhundleni sobuMongameli waleli lengabadi. Angingenanga emzabalazweni ngoba ngigaqele izikhundla. Yinye nje into engiyicelayo kini sizwe sakithi, ukuthi nokho angiphume ngomgudu womthetho sisekelo okuyiwona engabekwa ngawo. Angikwesabi ukulahlakelwa amalungelo nopoyinandi oza nesikhundla sobuMongameli. Angingenelanga lezozinto kuhulumeni, kunjalo nje azithi shu lapha kimi. Ngifuna kuphela ubulungiswa nokuhlonishwa komthetho sisekelo kanye namalungelo ami. Uma kwenzeke njalo, ngiyophuma ngokuzithoba nokuhlonipha. Ngiyakholelwa ukuthi ngiwenzile owami umsebenzi enaningibekele wona. Uma kukhona la ngingenzanga kahle, bakwethu AKUKHO SOKA ELINGENASICI. I also thank the citizens of South Africa for the privilege of serving as the President of the Republic since 2009. It has been an honour that I will cherish as long as I live. I wish to thank members of Cabinet, Deputy Ministers and the whole of government, national, provincial and local, for the positive spirit and cooperative manner in which we all worked. I also thank the other arms of state for the work we have accomplished. I thank all political parties who are in parliament for their contributions in making our democracy strong. I thank all stakeholders—business, labour, religious leaders, traditional leaders, youth, women’s groupings, the education sector and all others we have worked with over the years, united by the goal of moving South Africa forward. I thank the international community for the cooperation. I have also been disturbed by the instances of violence that have occurred because of the different views among members of our organization outside our headquarters, Luthuli House. No life should be lost in my name and also the ANC should never be divided in my name. I have therefore come to the decision to resign as President of the Republic with immediate effect. Even though I disagree with the decision of the Leadership of my organization, I have always been a disciplined member of the ANC. As I leave I will continue to serve the people of South Africa as well as the ANC, the organization I have served all my life. I will dedicate all of my energy to work towards the attainment of the policies of our organization, in particular the Radical Economic Transformation agenda. I thank you, ngiyabonga. https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/jacob-zuma-s-resignation-speech.html

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says counsel by the All Progressives Congress (APC) leader, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, that former Heads of State, Generals Olusegun Obasanjo and Ibrahim Babangida should quit politics and join the retirees' club, best suit President Muhammadu Buhari. The opposition party said President Buhari ought to have stepped aside largelydue to his "inability" to connect with the socio-economic realities and expectations of the current generation. "Tinubu is proverbially passing a message to President Buhari and his supporters on the fact that their candidate no longer enjoy mass acceptance among Nigerians ahead of the 2019 general elections. "Even Asiwaju Tinubu knows that President Buhari, for obvious reasons, is the most qualified of all our elder statesmen to join the retiree’s club and save the nation the agony of more years of misrule characterized by untold economic hardship, heavy bloodletting and general indignation. "The supporters of President Buhari should therefore accept the reality by reading the handwriting on the wall and heed wise counsel from well- meaning Nigerians. "In any case, the APC is already on a death throe, having led the worstgovernment in the history of our nation and will end up as the first party in government at the centre that will be rejected by Nigerians at a second attempt. "It is to this end that the repositioned PDP has opened its doors to all in the patriotic quest to end the APC misrule by ensuring a newengagement among Nigerians from all walks of life. "The PDP, through our platform, will enable Nigerians the opportunity of bringing up a dynamic and result-oriented Presidential candidate imbued with the required capacity and who understands the dynamics of growing a prosperous nation of our collective dream," the PDP said. https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/tinubu-call-for-obj-ibb-to-quit-best-suits-buhari-says-pdp.html

President Jacob Zuma has refused to heed calls to step down as South African president, denouncing moves by the ruling African Nation Congress (ANC) party to remove him as “very unfair.” “I find it unfair, very unfair,” Zuma said in his first public remarks, a day after the ANC formally asked him to resign. During more than a week of negotiations with the ANC’s key decision-making body, Zuma said that “nobody provided the reasons, nobody has been able to provide me with what I have done.” The ANC had urged Zuma to resign due to a string of corruption allegations. Zuma denied any wrongdoing on Wednesday. “There is no problem. There has never been a problem,” he said in the televised remarks. Earlier in the day police had raided the home of a business family linked to the embattled leader. Zuma says the ruling ANC has not followed party procedures in trying to unseat him. The ANC wants parliament to vote on Thursday on a motion of no confidence if he does not resign on Wednesday. “I need to be furnished on what I’ve done,” Mr Zuma says. “What is this hurry?” Agents from the Hawks, an elite police investigative unit, earlier entered the compound of the Gupta family in an affluent neighbourhood of Johannesburg. Three people were arrested in operations at various addresses, the South African Broadcasting Corporation reported. The family is suspected of using its connections to the president to influence Cabinet appointments and win state contracts, and has been a flashpoint for national anger over corruption in state enterprises during Mr Zuma’s tenure. Both the Guptas and Mr Zuma say they have done nothing wrong. ANC Secretary-General Ace Magashule makes a statement after the ruling party said scandal-tainted President Jacob Zuma must leave office . Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa is poised to replace Mr Zuma, who could face a motion of no confidence in parliament if he defies his party’s order to step down. Deputy President and ANC party president Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to take over from Jacob Zuma . As the Gupta-linked investigation proceeds, Mr Zuma could face corruption charges tied to an arms deal two decades ago. https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/zuma-says-moves-to-force-him-out-is-very-unfair.html

An Atlanta-bound plane made an emergency landing in Lagos, Nigeria after one of the engines had an issue on Tuesday night. Delta's Flight 55 from Lagos to Atlanta, which took off around 10:50 p.m. local time, returned to Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) less than an hour later. The A330-200 aircraft had an issue with one of its two engines, the airline confirmed early Wednesday morning. The flight landed safely and passengers were evacuated onto the runway down emergency slides, it was learnt. The airport fire fighters who had been notified of the development were already on ground when the incident happened. The airline in a statement said five passengers reported non-critical injuries during the evacuation. All passengers are being bussed back to the terminal. Delta says it will provide hotel rooms and rebook the passengers on a flight Wednesday. "The safety of Delta’s customers and crew members is always our top priority," the company said. Spokesman of the Lagos Airport Police Command, DSP Joseph Alabi also confirmed the incident to Daily Trust. He said the five people who were injured "out of anxiety" have been rushed to an undisclosed hospital. https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/five-injured-as-atlanta-bound-delta-flight-makes-emergency-landing-in-lagos.html

Kano State Governor Abdullahi Ganduje has alleged that his predecessor, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, wants to be controlling him from outside. According to the governor, given the psychology of leaders, it is very difficult for that to happen. Ganduje was addressing State House reporters on Tuesday after attending the presidential high table dialogue and launching of integrity & service compendium held at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa in Abuja. On his present relationship with Kwankwaso, the governor said: "Well, as you know, we were very good friends. In fact, my politics cannot be complete without Kwankwaso, and the history of Kwankwaso politics cannot be complete without me. But somewhere somehow, things went wrong. "But we believe in politics, you will get to a point you cannot rule and manage a state and then you are being controlled from outside. You know that one is very very difficult to happen if you look at the psychology of leaders." The governor described as a propaganda, the allegations of under-age voting during the Saturday's local government elections in the state, adding that the poll was very peaceful, free and fair. https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/ganduje-to-kwankwaso-you-can-t-control-me.html |
