Lack of sufficient reserve, low clearance speed of petrol at the ports, diversion of products are some of the reasons for the ongoing fuel crisis being experienced in the country, says Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Ibe Kachikwu. Mr. Kachikwu said this while speaking before a meeting of the joint committee of the Senate and House of Representatives. The meeting was convened to find a lasting solution to the fuel crisis. “The causes were; first, diversion was very key, second, there were logistics issues,” he said. “Once those diversions began Apapa Wharf was a problem to be able to move things due to bad roads, lack of sufficient reserve in our system making us unable to respond to the supply gap arising largely from the fact that private sector pulled out from supply. “There has been a loose enforcement on diversion in the country. We have not been able to police our depots adequately.” He explained that disparity in the landing cost has prevented the private marketers from importing petroleum into the country. “Going forward we need to address the issue of pricing, there is a disparity between landing cost and cost we are selling. If we are going to sell at N145, we need to put some mechanisms in place so that the private sector will go back importation. We have a committee looking at this and we are still going to submit a report for review. From left: Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Petroleum Resources, Dr Folasade Yemi-Esan; Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr Ibe Kachukwu; and Group General Manager, NNPC, Mr Maikanti Baru, during the Senate Committee on Petroleum Downstream Sector’s public hearing on fuel scarcity in Nigeria, at the National Assembly in Abuja on Thursday (4/1/18). 0075/4/1/2018/Hogan Bassey/NAN “Currently, the landing cost of product is N170 to N171 and we sell at N145 and the price we are allowed to sell is N145.” He said the executive is currently working on modalities to permanently resolve the petrol crisis and prevent it from rearing its head any other time. “We need to make marketers responsible for every tank of fuel up until point the point of delivery. “One mechanism will be to look at working with CBN to have an exchange rate mechanism that enables them to stay at N245 price. If we do that, then they (marketers) can import without price differentials. “In moments of normalcy, we are fine. In moments of emergency, our system is slow to respond. We also need to address our refineries.” The fuel scarcity across Nigeria has been on for about one month and worsened during the Yuletide season. While the scarcity has reduced in major cities like Abuja and Lagos, due to the efforts of the NNPC and petroleum ministry, it is still on in many other states like Kano and Akwa Ibom. In such states, many filling stations that have the product still sell at over N200 per litre, contrary to the N145 per litre official price. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/254504-real-reasons-fuel-scarcity-nigeria-kachikwu.html

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has demanded that transport minister Rotimi Amaechi resign his portfolio as he was said to have been appointed director-general of President Muhammadu Buhari's second term campaign. PDP in a statement also accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of being insensitive to the plight of Nigerians. “If the APC has any strand of dignity, then Amaechi must resign as the Minister of Transportation having been appointed and already functioning as the DG of President Buhari's Campaign. “Under the constitution of Nigeria, Mr. Amaechi cannot combine the job of a minister of the Federal Republic with another responsibility such as the DG of a campaign organization. "Amaechi's action in accepting the job while still holding office as minister is in clear breach of the oath of office and the oath ofallegiance which he swore in line with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution. "He should therefore resign his office as minister with immediate effect," the opposition party said. Ologbondiyan went down memory lane explaining how a serving Minister of Works, Chief Tony Anenih resigned after being appointed to head the Campaign Organisation of then President Olusegun Obasanjo, during the reign of PDP. https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/buhari-s-second-term-pdp-asks-amaechi-to-resign-as-minister.html

Some youth in Sokoto state have criticised President Muhammadu Buhari for not considering any tangible project for the three states that make up of the zone, Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara states in his ambitious new year's plans. The youth took their anger to social media platforms such as Facebook , twitter and whatsapp and demanded for an urgent redress. One blogger, Na-Allah Zagga wrote, "Don't be so partisan that you can brazenly defend injustice against the people of Sokoto, Zamfara and Kebbi States who feel righteously indignant at their apparent neglect in terms of federal projects and other infrastructure. "So what if we have ministers each in this government? Does that mean we have no need of federal projects? Is there a State without a Minister, which by the way, is a constitutional entitlement and not a favour?" he asked He maintained that "Genuine complaints are morally valid and speaking up is a duty. If your votes matter, then you should legitimately expect your interest to be protected. Hausawa sunce don lada ake salla!" [There’s an Hausa saying that you do things for the gain]. The President had in his over 30 minutes speech, outlined some of the projects to be cited in different geopolitical zones this year, and not a single project was earmarked for these three states. Another blogger, Usman Binji said, "Some people believe its abomination to fault PMB, but we believed silence is not golden especially in Democratic setting. Actually, we need federal government presence in Sokoto and the time to act is now or never.” https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/sokoto-youths-fall-out-with-buhari-over-new-year-speech-say-zone-marginalised.html

The Chinese Exim Bank has agreed to pay the $550 million Nigeria needs to procure two new satellites, Communications Minister Adebayo Shittu said on Wednesday. The minister disclosed this to State House correspondents after meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari. Shittu said the Chinese bank agreed to this following the federal government’s inability to meet up with its 15 percent counterpart funding. “Initially, the agreement was that they will provide the cost of the two satellites, $550m minus 15% which is the counterpart funding. Because we could not afford this 15%, we’ve renegotiated with the China EXIM Bank and the China Great Walls who are the manufacturers and they’ve happily agreed to pay the entire $550m to procure two new satellites. “The two new ones will ensure that the Nigerian satellite company which is NICOMSAT can conquer the entire African continent with regards to the provision of satellite communication services. This is a very big business opportunity and I’m sure that the Chinese appreciate the potential market which is so vast and that’s why they’ve agreed that even without our ability to contribute 15%, they’re prepared to pay the entire sum of $550m for the procurement of the two new satellites for Nigeria,” he said. The minister said “it’s not a loan. It’ll be equity participation of the Chinese company into our business. NICOMSAT is a limited liability company owned entirely by the federal government. So, they’re paying that to finance these highly required facilities and we’ll agree on the percentage sharing. Of course, Nigeria has nothing to lose because we’re not putting anything into it in terms of financial resources.” Asked when will Nigeria launch the two new satellites, he said: “It takes two years to produce because it’s when we sign the papers they’ll start production. We hope that before the end of this month, we’ll sign the papers and then they’ll commence the production. It’s upon the completion of the production that the two satellites will be launched. |

He said Governor Masari had remained focused and resolute towards achieving set targets in line with the restoration agenda. According to him, the people of Faskari Local Government Area (LGA) should remain loyal and supportive of the governor in his effort towards taking the state to the next level of development based on social justice, fairness and equitable transformation. “Masari is as well implementing the manifesto of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) through the provision of infrastructure, revitalization of the health sector and economic and social empowerment,” he also said He attributed the cordiality between the legislative and executive arms of government in the state to the Speaker, Alh.
