In what many would describe as ‘Miracle of Suhem’, ailing Taraba State Governor, Dambaba Suntai miraculously turned fisherman over the weekend. An indication that the Governor’s health appears to have improved significantly emerged yesterday as he entered a red Range Rover Sports HSC, which conveyed him to the fish farm without help. The Governor, alongside his wife, Hauwa; their twin children, his younger brother, Babangida Suntai; Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Media and Publicity, Mr. Sylvanus Giwa, and Chief Press Secretary, Alhaji Hassan Mijinyawa stormed a fish pond located near the School of Nursing at Jalingo Bye-pass in the state capital to have some good time. However, his over one hour outing, yielded no catch as he toiled in vain. The governor jokingly said the fish cheated on him. “Kifi sun chuche ni, dun sun riga su chi abinchi,” he said in Hausa, meaning: “the fish cheated on me because they are already fed.” It was learnt that on arrival at the pond, the embattled governor asked the farm manager to give him the fish feeds, which he threw into the pond for the fish to show up. The farm manager also brought him a hook and line and an earthworm, which he used as bait. However, fish refused to go for the bait, a drama which sent the small audience into laughter. His wife, Hauwa occasionally teased her husband about his inability to make a catch. At a point, the wife herself almost fell into the pond after slipping at the edge of the pond and the husband told her, “If you fall into the water I will fish you out.” The Governor’s failed effort made one of the security men laugh with Suntai, telling him to return home if he could not be quiet. “Noise scares fish,” he said. Suntai left the pond with a promise to return in a few days, this time to catch as many of the fish as possible. SOURCE dailypost.com.ng/2013/10/21/ailing-governor-suntai-turns-fisherman-photo/

NARD says no member will resume work until the Federal Government publicises the communiqué on their agreement last year, fully settle the arrears owed them, rectify the bottlenecks with the new payment system and set guideline on the Residency Training Policy. NARD National President, Dr. Jubril Abdulahi, told The Guardian, that the leadership is assessing the claims by the Ministry of Health that it has paid almost all the outstanding debts. “We have asked our various chapters to report and submit what has been paid and what is outstanding, he said. “But the main issue now is the agreement we had with the government last year. We want them to bring out a communiqué on that agreement. It is government that is holding us to ransom. We are ready to call off strike. We have a meeting tomorrow in Abuja by 4 p.m.” Chapter President of NARD, Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba, Dr. Emeka Ugwu, said yesterday: “We are still collating the statistics of the payment from the different centres. We are going to have meetings this week. We are eager to go back to our patients. “We heard that they want to remove resident doctors from the new payment system. They should just correct the mistake. We don’t want doctors to be removed from the payment system. It is a wonderful payment system. They should devise a way of making correction and capture our members that are yet to benefit. “Government has paid most of our members’ arrears except for one or two months, especially this month (October). They are settling our arrears but the issue we want is that we want to remain on it because it will curb corruption. “One of the things holding us back from calling off the strike is the Residency Training Policy. Government should bring out the guideline. We are very optimistic that the strike may be called off this week.” At the weekend, Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, explained that the Federal Government has settled 95 per cent of the demands made by the doctors. Speaking during a health walk in Lagos organised by the Institute of Directors (IoD), Chukwu said that, “all things being equal, I think latest by next week, they should end the strike.” According to him, the main issue was the introduction of new electronic platform, IPPS, which had implementation issues, on account of which some doctors were not paid, stating that, “As Minister, I am also being paid by the system that was introduced across all the establishments owned by the Federal Government. “There were issues in implementation, which is typical of most new schemes. So, some people were not paid because of the question of whether they should be included or excluded from the system. That was the argument going on, leading to the strike. But as at Friday last week, they have all been sorted out. “If there are one or two lingering issues, they can be sorted out in a matter of time. But I don’t think the country has to pay the very high price of people losing their lives because doctors do not attend to them, just because they want to gain something that is not so significant compared to what they are already getting.” He added that while all the Chief Medical Directors (CMDs) of government hospitals across the federation have confirmed receipt of doctors’ salaries, few of the resident doctors were yet to be paid as at weekend, “which is a small fraction compared to the greater number of those that have been paid. “So I assure that others would be paid within this week. If it has to do with government’s commitment in the matter, they should have called off the strike since last Friday. But I guess they are insisting on paying every doctor. I think everything should be put into perspective – nothing should be do or die.” SOURCE dailypost.com.ng/2013/10/21/residents-doctors-vow-to-continue-strike/?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=residents-doctors-vow-to-continue-strike |

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has accused the Federal Government of sponsoring media campaign to force it to end the ongoing industrial action. According to the union, its indefinite strike which started on July 2, still stands, irrespective of the move by government to discredit its leadership. Chairman of ASUU, University of Abuja chapter, Clement Chup, had on Sunday in an interview with Daily Independent, also denied a purported meeting at the State House, Abuja, with Vice President Namadi Sambo, where it was claimed that government further shifted grounds on the demands of the Union. An online news medium had reported that there was an appreciable progress in the ongoing negotiations between ASUU and the Vice President, particularly on the controversial earned allowances for the striking lecturers. In the report, government was alleged to have further shifted ground on the demands made by the Union, by agreeing to add N10 billion to the N30 billion initially provided for the settlement of earned allowances, making it N40 billion. It was also reported that government had shored up the N100 billion meant for infrastructure to N150 billion with a pledge to periodically inject more funds into the system in line with the Needs Implementation Committee chaired by Benue State Governor, Gabriel Suswan. Chup in his reaction, said “I read the mischievous report online myself, but I am telling you authoritatively that there was no such meeting. “Government is only trying to use propaganda and cheap blackmail to make us call off this strike, but it will not work. “Our strike is still very much on course, in fact, ASUU will soon release a position paper on these developments, we are used to this kind of blackmail from government,” Chup said. On his part, Chairman of the Ambrose Alli University chapter of ASUU, Fred Esumeh, attributed the strike to failed leadership on the part of government, saying over 53 letters urging government to implement the 2009 agreement were transmitted prior to the strike. “As I keep saying, this strike is a product of failed leadership on the part of government; this is because we had series of dialogue to reach an agreement. “An agreement reached since 2009 that has not been implemented up till now, obviously it is a product of failed leadership, before this time that we commenced strike, there have been over 53 letters, not to talk of several meetings with the House and Senate committees on education to intervene. “I do not think ASUU is loosing public sympathy, because what we see in our electronic media and perhaps few print media is sponsored protest. “Like the one organised by the market women, that one is laughable, you could see that it is government sponsored. “Then of course, the guy that parades himself as NANS President, Yinka Gbadebo, a diploma student in OAU, who was rusticated from Ekiti State University. “A diploma student cannot even contest to be an SUG president and to be a NANS president, you must be from SUG presidents all over the federation, so we know these people are sponsored by government,” Esumeh said. October is proving to be the month of reckoning for migration scammers. Barely days after Nigerian Prince Dr Yilkyes made headlines during his trial at Canterbury Crown Court for running a huge illegal immigration racket, Taofik Amao, 50, of Stanfield Gardens, Dagenham was handed a two-year sentence for attempting to arrange a fake wedding. His coconspirator, AkinwaleAkinmade, of Turner Avenue, Seven Sister, was arrested at London Bridge station and charged with conspiracy to facilitate a non-EU national to remain in the UK. The “Fixers” were uncovered by two of their clients after they conspired to arrange a fake wedding between Oluwaseun Olukokun and 27- year-old Dutch national ScheyeckaNowells in October last year. The conspiracy crumbled when Immigration Enforcement Criminal and Financial Investigations became suspicious and decided to probe further, to determine whether Olukokun and Nowells are truly in a real relationship. The couple was summoned and during questioning, Nowells broke down and admitted that, the intended marriage was a scam and claimed that the fixers could be seen carrying her red suitcase at London Bridge Station. Nowells and Olukokun were promptly arrested and the fixers were apprehended. Upon further questioning, Nowell, Olukokun and Akinmadeidentified Amao as the main fixer. Further evidence on Amao’s laptop and mobile phone also backed their claim. Nowells, Olukokun and Akinmade pleaded guilty to the charges and were sentenced to 12 months, 18 months and 2 years respectively at Woolwich crown court on 1 February, 2013. Amao was charged with conspiracy to assist in a breach of immigration law on 20 February 2013 and was found guilty by a jury following a 10-day trial at the Old Bailey which finished on 12 September. He was sentenced to 2 and a half years on Thursday 10 October. Hannah Shirley, Immigration Enforcement Criminal and Financial Investigations team, Home Office speaking about the case said: ‘Amao clearly thought that he could run roughshod over the UK’s immigration rules and make a profit from his criminality. ‘He was wrong as our officers caught up with him and brought him to justice ‘The Home Office is cracking down on all forms of immigration crime, no matter how large or small, and those who seek to cheat immigration laws face prosecution and conviction.’ Sham marriages is very high and the most likely method illegal immigrant uses to try to get legalised mainly because they feel it is the only route open to them. Due to the prerequisite for marrying a British national, most illegal immigrants turn to EU nationals as the law governing EU marriages is quite relax and flexible. UK government has developed zero tolerance to illegal immigration and immigrants and is making it more difficult for them to get legalised. During the summer, the Home Office carried out a campaign ordering illegals to go back to their country or get arrested via a van ad. The campaign received mixed reviews with some residents where the campaign was carried out calling it offensive and nasty. Unrelenting in their effort to make illegal immigrants unwanted, the government has published a new immigration Bill, which carries a number of proposals to clamp down on sham marriages. The Bill is recommending the extension of marriage and civil partnership notice to 28 days in England and Wales with flexibility for extension to 70 days where extensive investigation has to be carried out. Speaking in support of the bill, Immigration Minister Mark Harper said “The United Kingdom has a long and proud history of immigration. Our immigrant communities are a fundamental part of who we are and we are a richer and stronger society because of them. But the public expects and deserves an immigration system that is fair to British citizens and legitimate immigrants and tough on those who abuse the system and flout the law The Immigration Bill will stop migrants abusing public services to which they are not entitled, reduce the pull factors which draw illegal immigrants to the UK and make it easier to remove people who should not be here We will continue to welcome the brightest and best migrants who want to contribute to our economy and society and play by the rules. But the law must be on the side of people who respect it, not those who break it.” If everything goes without any hitch, the Bill would complete its Parliamentary passage during the third session of this Parliament and once the Royal Assent has been received, measures proposed in the bill will be implemented from summer 2014 upwards. No fewer than eight people have died and 61 hospitalized in a community where people displaced by communal conflicts live in Plateau state, following an outbreak of cholera. Medical authorities confirmed an outbreak of the disease in Namu village in the Qua’pan Local Government Area of the state. Namu, a village at the Plateau and Nasarawa States border, hosts displaced people in the violent crisis that broke out in the Obi Local Government Area of Nasarawa State. “Yes, there has been an outbreak of cholera in Namu village, eight people have been killed while 61 others have been hospitalised,” the Plateau State Epidemiologist, Dr Raymond Yuryit, said in Namu on Sunday. Mr Yuryit spoke when he received Alhassan Barde, the Executive Secretary of the Plateau State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), who had gone to assess the situation. He said that those hospitalized had been diagnosed with the disease and were admitted into various health centres. Mr Yuryit attributed the outbreak to overcrowding, dirty environment and the consumption of unhygienic food and water. Cholera kills within the shortest possible time because it dehydrates the victim, leading to severe gastro-intestinal impact. The medical expert explained further that the Namu victims suffered chronic diarrhoea and vomiting, saying that many had been hit by the disease before government intervened. The specialist said that the epidemic was not altogether a surprise as the area had lots of internally-displaced persons from Nasarawa State, a development that had put much pressure on the environment and portable drinking water. “But we are happy that the situation is already under control,” he said. The epidemiologist explained that he had advised health workers in private and government health centres on ways to avert a recurrence of the ailment and also on how to quickly manage the situation if it arose. He thanked the Plateau and Nasarawa States governments for their quick response to the report, lauding the SEMAs for their massive support. He called on government at all levels to ensure that the monthly sanitation exercise was taken seriously, especially in rural areas, to ensure good hygiene for rural dwellers. Mr Juryit also appealed to government to provide portable water to rural dwellers, pointing out that dirty water was the main cause of the epidemic. He called on people in the area to promptly report any case of diarrhoea or vomiting to the nearest health centre, saying that quick action could minimise casualty rates. Mr Barde, in his remarks, said that the quick intervention by the agency was part of its statutory mandate, promising to continue to offer quick assistance to areas in need. The SEMA chief said that the agency intervened to avert the possibility of the disease spreading to other parts of the state, calling on relevant agencies to assist in the management of disaster cases. He thanked the Nasarawa Government for donating drugs that would be distributed to various health centres.
