Education / Strike: You’ve Made Your Point, Return To Your Classrooms by airclipse(m): 9:41am On Oct 20, 2013
PRESIDENT GOODLUCK JONATHAN (3R
TO INAUGURATE THE GOODLUCK EBELE JONATHAN
ENGINEERING BUILDING OF ABUAD: FOUNDER OF THE UNIVERSITY, AA
HIS WIFE MODUPE (2ND R); GOV. KAYOD
L) AND OTHER DIGNITARIES. (NAN)
President Goodluck Jonathan has appealed
to members of the Academic Staff Union
of Universities (ASUU) to return to the
classrooms in the interest of their
students just as he noted that the
striking lecturers had made their point.
The president made the appeal on
Saturday in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State
capital at the inauguration of the College
of Engineering Complex at the Afe
Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD).
The three-storey college complex was also
named after the President.
Mr. Jonathan pleaded with ASUU to listen
to the voice of reason adding that
whatever their grievances might be,
keeping students out of the lecture rooms
for four months was unpatriotic.
His words, “I once again appeal to the
entire membership of ASUU to pause and
ponder on the adverse effect of their
action on the future of the vibrant youths
of this great nation.
“The collective destiny of tens of
thousands of tomorrow’s leaders should
not be held hostage to vagaries of labour
disputes.
“As long as we are humans, as long as we
are a developing society, this labour
dispute must come up.
“I always say that even in the developed
societies we hear about labour dispute;
and there is no society, even the most
developed, that has provided the facilities
for every worker.
“Our security services, the Police, the
Armed Forces, Navy, Air Force and para-
military, intelligent services are also
operating in an environment that is not the
best.
“If all of us should go on long strike
because our environment is not at its
optimum, then definitely we can never get
the Nigeria of our dream.
“So, let me use this unique opportunity
that I am interfacing with our future
leaders, our students, to plead with ASUU
members.
“If it is a genuine strike keeping students
out of classrooms for almost four months,
by that they have demonstrated to
everybody that they have a case.
“And if the strike is motivated by some
other interests, they have also achieved
that by keeping students out of schools
for more than a semester,” he said.
President Jonathan warned that the
freedom of association and the right of
workers to go on strike should not be
abused to the detriment of the country.
“I believe that labour has the right to go
on strike, but in that strike, any action
taken must be built on patriotic zeal.
“In as much as you can go on strike, you
must be patriotic to our country.
“No matter how and what you feel about
Mr President and the federal government,
I plead with ASUU that for the sake of
our students, they should resume classes,”
he said.
The president reassured all that
government would continue to work with
all Nigerians to build a better country for
all and future generation.
He noted that with government’s sincere
commitment to improving the qualities of
infrastructure in the universities and the
operating environment, the striking
lecturers should reconsider their stand.
Mr. Jonathan noted that if students of
private universities could graduate within
three and half years as witnessed in
ABUAD, “it is unacceptable that students
of public institutions are kept for extra
one or two years

Politics / Navy Commences Construction Of Multi-billion Naira Base In Anambra by airclipse(m): 8:47am On Oct 20, 2013
Hi guys!! I'm nσт sure where тσ put this, as I could nσт determine whether it's an investment or politics............

Construction of a new naval base expected to
gulp N1.2 billion has begun at the riverside
community of Odekpe in Ogbaru local
government area of Anambra State. The site
is about seven kilometers from the Onitsha
Port commissioned last year by President
Goodluck Jonathan.
At the ground-breaking ceremony of the
project, Governor Peter Obi presented a
cheque for N200 million to the Nigerian Navy
to expedite work on the site.
Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Joseph
Ezeoba, who performed the ceremony with
Governor Obi, said the concept of establishing
the base in 2010 was borne out of the
necessity to ensure protection of lives and
property and to secure the nation’s inland
waterways around the commercial city of
Onitsha.
He said: “When the President commissioned
the Onitsha Port in August 2012, we realized
that we needed a more comprehensive
security apparatus to take care of the
expectant security challenges.
“With the presence of the Onitsha Port, it is
obvious that the scope of economic activities
of Anambra State would expand with the
prospect of greater employment opportunities
and improved economic fortunes for the state.
These expectations could be thwarted if the
socio-economic environment of the area is not
properly secured.”
According to him, naval operations in the area
have begun in full force, adding that some
criminal elements whose activities undermine
peace and security were recently arrested,
while some vessels used in carrying out illegal
activities along the waterways were
impounded.
The Chief of Naval Staff, who observed what
he described as the outstanding performance
of Governor Obi in advancing the growth and
development of the state and country,
commended him for appreciating the
fundamental role of the Navy in protecting the
waterways and supporting a permanent
structure that would enable Naval personnel
carry out their responsibilities effectively.

…there is nothing they need to be jealous
or suspicious about

1. Engage into communication.

2. Talk it out with your partner.

3. Make them feel as secure as you can.

4. Reassure them that you’re the one made
for them.

5. And there is nothing they need to be
jealous or suspicious about.

Education / Student Attempts Suicide Over ASUU Strike by airclipse(m): 8:15am On Oct 20, 2013
The ongoing strike of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU took a different turn on Saturday at the Dutse-Alhaji area of Abuja when a female student of the University of Abuja made to hang herself in protest of the nearly four months old strike.

The female student identified as Jane Okoro had already hanged herself, but fell off the ceiling while struggling, apparently because the rope she used was not strong enough.

Jane had sent her two younger brothers on an errand, just a way of sending them out of the house to be able to carry out the abominable act, but one of the brothers returned after 15 minutes and saw her on the floor with a rope tied round her neck while another rope dangled from the ceiling fan. The 15 year old boy raised the alarm, thinking that his sister was dead, attracting neighbours and other onlookers into their compound. However, it was discovered by those who got there first, that Jane was alive as it was only a suicide attempt.

The boy, who was identified as Andrew had told our correspondent that the sister was behaving so strange throughout that morning. He said, ” She was to go to the market with my mum, but said she was not feeling too well. While we were at home with her, she refused to talk. She was always on her Blackberry. Shortly after she had her bath, she sent us to First-Gate (market), but I left some money I wanted to use to buy my personal stuff at home, so upon return, I saw her on the floor of our parlour. I even thought she was dead, so I shouted.”

Meanwhile, the mother who returned from the market immediately after the news got to her had told our correspondent in tears that, her daughter must have attempted to commit suicide because of the ongoing ASUU strike. She said, I will ask her questions on why she wanted to do this to us. She has been complaining to me about this ASUU strike. She said, at her age, she should have been done with school, and begin to take care of the children and I. Her father is late. I know that only this week, she had complained to me up to 6 times on how frustrating this strike has been. I know other things may have contributed, but ASUU strike may have contributed the most; but for whatever reason, it was devilish for my daughter to have attempted suicide.” She said.

Asked what she was going to do about the situation, she said ” I will take her to my Pastor this evening. She needs prayers. We need somebody to talk to her. God will do the miracle for me. I didn’t do anything to anybody. I must not suffer for nothing. She is already in her third year in school. What would I have done if this had happened?”

Attempt to speak with Jane failed as she could not respond to questions from our correspondent. The only statement she muttered was ” It was a better option”.

The mother had later asked our correspondent to leave her to rest. She said ” she will talk to you after we see our Pastor. She will give the testimony herself.”

However, a female friend of Jane who had pleaded not to be mentioned showed our correspondent her recent conversation with Jane on her Blackberry. She said ” my last chat with her was on this very ASUU strike. See what she posted, ” I tire for these ASUU peopleoooo” She showed our correspondent the chat.
