Greatihex: top assister and top scorer are useless if they don't win points. So basically, as long as you win the points you carried that team, because you stood up to the occasion when it was difficult.
Maybe those that top assists and goals were doing it against farmers and when it didn't matter, just like the goals that Liverpool have been scoring since they won the league are useless.
Do you agree that Hazard carried Chelsea to EPL in 2015? You are not far from the truth. Against Barcelona, his team's main contender for the title, in both legs Benzema was useless, no goal and no assist for 180 mins. Zidane removed him and Diaz scored in Madrid. |

Greatihex: This stat explains it all.
I have not followed football for a long time like some of our ogas here, but the little I have followed it I know that the game is not just 1+1=2. And I believe that is why the game is the most followed game/sports on earth.
I did not watch any madrid match fully this season, so I can't tell who contributed more or not. Therefore, I am not joining in the Benzema argument. But I want to say this. Football is a team sports. And every member of the team contributes to the success of the team one way or the other. Although, not everyone has the same degree of contribution, but no position in the team is more important than the other. The midfielder is as important as the defender. The attacker is as important as the defender, and vice versa. Everyone on the pitch is important as long as they are doing their job, whatever it may be, very well.
Now, about those who downplay the importance of defence just because they feel emotionally attached to goals and the people that score them, here is my summation with an example.
The issue of clean sheet and more goals is not just black and white.
Let's say for instance, Chelsea have two matches to play to end the season, right? Now, let's say we need maximum points, which is 6 points. Now, let us use these two matches remaining for Chelsea as examples.
First. Liverpool 0 : 4 Chelsea (Abraham 4 goals) Wolves 1 : 1 Chelsea (Abraham 0 goal)
Second Liverpool 1 : 2 Chelsea (Abraham 1 goal) Wolves 0 : 1 Chelsea (Abraham 1 goal)
Third scenario. Liverpool 0 : 0 Chelsea Wolves 0 : 0 Chelsea
Fourth scenario Liverpool 3 : 2 Chelsea Wolves 2 : 1 Chelsea
First scenario = 4 points. Second scenario = 6 points. Third scenario = 2 points Fourth scenario = 3 points
First scenario, the team did a good job if you total it, but no maximum points. And Abraham did a great job totally but when you look closely you will see comma.
Second scenario, the team did a great job if you look closely, but compared to the first one with total stats gathered, they didn't meet up, yet they got maximum points. Also, Abraham in the first scenario scored more, but did not do better than the second scenario.
Third and fourth scenario is self explanatory.
The conclusion is that it is not about total goals scored or total conceded at the end of the season, it is about the team performance every match day. A striker's contribution is not when he scores 50 goals total, it is how many matches he was able to score in when the team needed it. That is, it is not about giving 9/10 performance in 30% of the season's matches, it is about giving consistent, at least, 7/10 in 80% of the season's matches. That is what is important. Nice piece. In the El classico, that Madrid won 2-0, the Algerian bag of beans was so useless that he was bundled out. Guess what? Diaz came in, and within 2mins he put the match to bed, with a clinical finish. Some of these Aparisports members didn't watch up to 4 Madrid's matches this season, but they will come here to type nonsense, based on stats they saw online. Below was my post after Diaz scored the 2nd goal, Raumdeuter was mute. This was the period their Benzema had only 1 goal in like 900 minutes on the field. airmark: Vinicius will thank Pique for the deflected goal. Diaz will only thank Zidane for giving him the chance to do, in 2mins, what Benzema couldn't do for 90 mins. |

timbros: This your post goes both ways.
If Courtois doesn't play, will Real Madrid play with 10 men? Another goal keeper will surely take his place and any decent goal keeper that keeps for Madrid will keep at least 3/4 clean sheets, at which point the goals is the real Championship winner since you can replace Courtois with any Madrid-level goalkeeper and still win the League. Who told you this lie? Do you want me to start with Diego Lopez? Do you even understand the emboldened? |

Ibime: That's between Benzema and the other attackers.
Nothing to do with the defence who have posted World Class stats.
Benzema 21 goals is not a World Class stat. He can only use that to flog his fellow attackers who flopped.
A member of the defence must be honoured when the defence posts World Class stats on the way to a Championship and no striker posted World Class stats. That's why Terry was honoured in 2005 over Lampard who scored 20 goals, and why VVD was honoured over Salah who scored 20 or 21 league goals. God bless you o. 21 goals in 36 matches, from a striker that played in front of quality midfielders. |

You had to go to the beginning of the season, out of 34 matches he kept. It's so hard for you, that's almost a year ago Now compare that to a Benzema that ghosted for 11 matches in a row, between December and February, when the league might have slipped away but for others that stepped up. You are just not smart and the reason Dayo likes to use you as a foot stool. |

And you even translated those figure literally!
Obviously I've been wasting my time all the while. Now remove all those 10-9, 8-7 scorelines from Estonia. Your Benzema scored 21 goals just like he did last season, we no go hear word. Even Messi scored more than Benzema and Barca scored 83 goals but they conceded more goals and that gave Madrid the edge. Don't worry we go give Courtois his skirt back, we will see how the bag of beans' 21 goals will win laliga next season.

timbros: You mentioned Burundi, Rwanda, Estonia leagues in response to my initial comment of scoring bucket loads of goals to secure the league.
To counter that mockery, I referred you to two seasons two teams scored large quantities of goals to win the league.
Please tell me what Goal Against or Goal Difference has to do with this?
Didn't Man City and Chelsea scored goals for fun in those seasons? Was it is Rwanda, Estonia or Burundi leagues they scored those goals? Below is your post that i replied to, and it wasn't only about goals scored. Just 4 matches your team have conceded 32 goals. It can't happen in elite division in Europe. I still await that year that a team conceded 60+ goals and still won the league. You have not yet proved it with any example, that a porous defence can win the league. timbros: You can win the league with a porous defence. All you need to do is outscore your opponents. 10-9, 5-4, 13-12, 8-7 etc... If you continue like this till season ends, you will secure maximum points. . |

BlueMann: Then you measure their performances and contrast with what is expected of them as 'World class players'. For a world class striker, one could argue that Benzema's contributions wete very good but not exceptional. But Courtois and Ramos were exceptional, taking into account their status, which is Airmark's point. That's the point o. |
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › Re: Official Chelsea Fan Thread: Club World Cup Champions 2025-2029 by airmark(m): 12:09pm On Jul 18, 2020 |
timbros: Benzema didn't score in those matches, yes. But Madrid scored that is why they won those matches. Stop making it look like it was all defence that delivered the league.
You only need to look at Madrid's top scorers to know the importance of Benzema this season. With 21 goals, the next best scorer is a defender with 10 goals (a large chunk being PK).... Doesn't that tell you that Madrid's attack is shit if not for Benzema?
Chelsea didn't outscore their opponents, simple.
2009/10 Chelsea must have played Burundi or Rwanda league when we were scoring 6 to 8 goals for fun... 2009-2010, Chelsea were the 2nd team that conceded least, so your point didn't stand. Last season Benzema scored 21 goals and Madrid finished 3rd by scoring 63 goals and conceded 43. This season Benzema scored the same 21 goals but Madrid scored 68 and conceded jjust 23 and won the league. If you know how to analyse data, you will stop this Benzema nonsense and look at the main players that delivered the silverware, defending the goals from entering. I didn't want to use any data, because i watched most of their league matches and know Courtois and Ramos were more consistent than the Algerian bag of beans. Below is another confirmation that banging in massive goals alone is not enough. 2013/2014 Laliga table.

timbros: Man City 2017/18 that ended the league with 106 goals must have played Estonian league to be scoring 3 to 5 goals per game almost consistently. And Man city conceded just 28 goals, the least in the league among all the teams. That threw away your point of conceding goals massively, from the 18th floor. Next? |
