Politics / The 5 Previous West African Military Interventions by AjayiWrites2: 12:25pm On Jan 20, 2017
West African nations have a long history of sending their military forces to intervene in neighbouring countries, under the umbrella of a regional cooperation bloc.

Created in 1975, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) focuses mainly on resolving regional conflicts.
In the case of The Gambia, where ECOWAS has temporarily suspended a military operation, the bloc has thrown its support behind the new President Adama Barrow.

The group has 15 members, of which eight are francophone (Benin, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Mali, Niger, Senegal and Togo), five anglophone (The Gambia, Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria and Sierra Leone) and two Portuguese speaking (Cape Verde and Guinea-Bissau).

The organisation is dominated politically and economically by regional powerhouse Nigeria.

Here's a look at the five main foreign interventions carried out since 1990:

- Mali -

On January 11, 2013, following a UN Security Council resolution, the bloc authorises the immediate deployment of an intervention force aimed at helping Mali retake its Islamist-controlled north.

The same day, the French military launches Operation Serval to back the Malian army and drive back the Islamists, who are pushing south towards Bamako.

The West African force comprises 6,300 men, including 2,000 from Chad, which is not an ECOWAS member. The Chadian soldiers were on the front line alongside French soldiers in fighting the insurgents.

On July 1, 2013, the ECOWAS force is absorbed by the UN's MINUSMA stabilisation force in Mali, which is currently 13,000 strong.

- Guinea-Bissau -

West African troops are deployed in May 2012 to help the political transition after one of the nation's many coups.

They have since served with a mandate to protect public figures and institutions.

The force consists of more than 600 police officers and paramilitary gendarmes from Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Niger, Senegal and Togo.

Already in February 1999, a lightly armed ECOWAS force was deployed to help resolve the crisis in the insurgency-hit country, but withdrew several months later after failing to prevent a resumption of fighting and the overthrow of the head of state.

- Liberia -

In August 1990, ECOWAS sends a force of several hundred men to Liberia to intervene in a civil war ignited eight months earlier.

The ECOWAS Ceasefire Monitoring Group, or ECOMOG, quickly grows to nearly 20,000 soldiers.

Although generally described as a peacekeeping force, ECOMOG is soon called on to take more responsibilities for maintaining order.

In early 1997, more than seven years after the war started, ECOMOG carries out a major disarmament operation, paving the way for multi-party elections in July.

The last ECOMOG soldiers leave Liberia in October 1999.

In August 2003, a new ECOWAS mission, ECOMIL, is deployed in Monrovia, the capital, which had been under siege by rebels for three months. Restricted to some 3,500 soldiers, the force is unable to deploy across the whole of the country and transfers its contingent to the United Nations.

- Sierra Leone -

ECOMOG's Nigerian contingent drives a 1997-98 military junta, the Revolutionary United Front, from Freetown and reinstates president Ahmad Tejan Kabbah. The RUF later invades Freetown on January 6, 1999, before being expelled two weeks later by ECOMOG troops.

The West African intervention force, which has up to 11,000 men in Sierra Leone, officially winds up its mission in May 2000 and is replaced by the UN peacekeeping force, formed to guarantee the Lome peace accord of July 1999, which ended the civil war.

- Ivory Coast -

A 1,300-strong West African force is deployed in January 2003 after a military rebellion which effectively cuts Ivory Coast in two. In 2004 the soldiers are integrated into the UN's mission in the country.

The day of reckoning

Politics / ‎FG Loses $198.7m To Oil Swap, OPA – NEITI by AjayiWrites2: 11:22pm On Dec 30, 2016
The Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, NEITI, said the country lost $198.7 million in 2014 to the crude oil-for-product swap and the Offshore Processing Arrangements, OPA

NEITI disclosed this in its Audit Report for 2014 released in Abuja on Friday. It said the release of the reports was in accordance with the global Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) standards which encouragedd implementing countries to release their independent industry audit reports at most two years in arrears.

According to the report, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, and its subsidiary, the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company, NPDC, failed to remit $4.7 billion and N318.2 billion to the Federation Account in 2014.

Highlighting key aspects of the Acting Executive Secretary of NEITI, Mr. Waziri Adio, further stated that at the close of the 2014 audits, NPDC had not paid the outstanding $1.7 billion for the eight Oil Mining Leases, OML, under the Shell Joint Venture (JV) divested to it by NNPC.

He also stated that the NPDC had also not paid for the four OMLs under the NAOC JV divested to it by NNPC.

He noted that the four assets were recently valued by the Department of Petroleum Resources, DPR, at $2.25 billion.

Adio said that there were outstanding liabilities of N68.28 billion from the NPDC for Withholding Tax, Pay As You Earn, Education Development Tax, Value Added Tax and NDDC Tax.

According to him, the NPDC is still having outstanding liabilities of $3.3 billion for Royalty Oil, Royalty Gas, Petroleum Profit Tax, PPT, and Gas Flare Penalty.

He also accused the NNPC of failing to remit N250 billion to the Federation Account from its domestic sales of crude oil allocated to it.

He said, “The value of crude oil allocated to NNPC for domestic use in 2014 came to $15.67 billion or N2.44 trillion.

” Only N1.36 trillion was received in the year 2014 in respect of domestic crude oil; while the total deduction from domestic crude sales was N830 billion.

” This therefore leaves an unremitted balance of N250 billion from the domestic crude sales.” he said.

He further stated that the NNPC received $1.42 billion from the Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas, NLNG, as dividends, loan and interest repayments for 2014 but failed to remit same to the Federation.

This, he said brought the total NLNG payments not remitted by the NNPC between 2000 and 2014 to $15.8 billion.

Culture / Ooni Ogunwusi Described As Re-incarnate Of Oduduwa (photos) by AjayiWrites2: 10:59pm On Dec 30, 2016
The Alayemore of Ido-Osun, Oba Adedapo Aderemi, has described the Ooni of Ife, Ooni Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, as the Oduduwa re-incarnated, praising him for celebrating Obalufon Ogbogbodirin the father of his own ancestor Obalufon Alayemore.

Oba Aderemi who is also the secretary of South-West council Obas said this during the unveiling ceremony of Obalufon Ogbogbodirin Statue and grand-finale celebration of Obalufon Festival, 2016, on Thursday at the Ile-Oodua palace in Ile-Ife.
He stated that Obalufon Ogbogbodirin as a hero gave birth to another hero Obalufon Alayemore who had founded several of today's Yoruba towns including Ido-Osun.

"Yes they are both heroes worthy of this celebration. My progenitor, Ooni Obalufon Alayemore succeeded his father Ooni Obalufon Ogbogbodirin, he founded my kingdom Ido-Osun having been driven out by Oranmiyan who had just returned from his sojourns where had earlier gone to establish many Kingdoms, he forcefully succeed him as Ooni. Apart from Ido-Osun, my father Alayemore also founded other towns like Ifon Osun, Ilara, Erin Efon-Alaaye and other towns in Ekiti before he came back here(Ile-Ife) to succeed Oranmiyan making him the only Ooni who was crowned twice". Oba Alayemore said.

He commended Ooni Ogunwusi for preaching peaceful co-existence among the Yoruba traditional rulers, acknowledging him to have visited Alafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi twice within a year of his reign not minding his status as the father of all Oduduwa children all over the world.

Oba Aderemi stated further that within a year, Ooni Ogunwusi has transformed Ile-Ife beyond any imagination, adding that the Ooni's giant strides in infrastructural development, agricultural revolution, cultural tourism, empowerment for the youths, aged and the widows among others are enough indications of Oduduwa reincarnation and will remain appreciated by the entire Yoruba race.

"This is unprecedented, Am not surprised that Ooni is reforming these dieties' statues because the previous Oonis from Oduduwa were also known for unprecedented giant strides, let me remind you all here that his great grandfather the Ojaja 1st was responsible for the first documentation of the history of kingship system in Yoruba around 1883.

"I must also commend the humility of his leadership. Despite the fact he is the spiritual leader of Yoruba race, he has been travelling to meet other Yoruba monarchs in their various palaces without claiming any supremacy" he ascertained.

The traditional ruler lauded Ooni Ogunwusi for his development and unity of Yorubaland and human race, to the extent of taking his peace and unity campaign to foreign countries such as UK, Ghana, Australia, USA, Germany, Canada and the Caribbeans for impactful partnership.

He assured that Ooni Ogunwusi is Oduduwa and has come to complete the unfinished work of his ancestors as current the father of all Yoruba traditional rulers maintaining that the new Ooni was selected by trinity so as to civilise his community and to bring into remembrance the past glory of Yoruba land.

According to him, no fewer than 401 dieties existed globally, but Ife took 201 in which Ooni is the only existing living diety among them all for which he deserves to be duly honoured and respected

Crime / Woman Masterminds Son’s Kidnap by AjayiWrites2: 7:36pm On Dec 30, 2016
A woman has been arrested in Damaturu, Yobe state, north east Nigeria over the kidnap of her 10 year-old son.

The woman, identified as Barakat Daya was arrested on Wednesday by the operatives of the Department of State Services after her 10 year-old son, Moh’d Yusuf Daya was rescued from kidnappers. Her friend, Rukayat Danladi was also arrested.

The DSS suspects their culpability in the kidnap case.

The DSS was called in after the boy was kidnapped on Wednesday morning at Ben Kalio Housing Estate, Damaturu. The kidnappers demanded a ransom of N5 million .

However, about 1920 hours same day, the operatives of the Service rescued the boy in Potiskum town, Potiskum LGA. The town is about 100 kms from Damaturu.

The startling revelation about the 10 year-old boy’s mother acting in cahoot with kidnappers was made by Tony Opuiyo in the end of the year statement cataloguing the crime busting efforts of the secret agency.

Tony Opuiyo also revealed that the agency has uncovered a criminal gang which specialises in robbing foreigners, either visiting or living in Abuja.

Members of the gang who robbed an expatriate in a high brow hotel in Abuja and carted away his money and other valuables, have however been arrested.

According to a statement by Tony Opuiyo for the agency, two of the gang members, Ikechukwu OBADLEGWU and Ikechukwu Joseph EKE are in the net.

While OBADLEGWU carried out surveillance on potential targets for the group, EKE is the kingpin and mastermind of the whole operation.

DSS said it has almost recovered all the stolen items.

The DSS said it arrested a notorious fraudster at Gwaron Dutse, Kano Municipal, Kano State.

The fraudster was identified as Auwalu Abdullahi YAKASAI.

He was apprehended for allegedly defrauding Jaiz and Unity Banks of N100 Million and N50 Million respectively.

The Service also arrested one Bashir SHUAIBU, on 5 December, 2016 at Tsamiya village, Gezawa LGA of Kano State for obtaining money from unsuspecting victims through threat messages. He was arrested while in the process of defrauding another victim.
