The land that is now northern Somalia, specifically Zeila, was the land that the prophets companions settled when they were given asylum but Abyssinia. Much of the land that is now Ethiopia was controlled by Somalis and vice versa for the past 600 years.

1/3 of the land in Ethiopia currently is occupied by Ethnic Somalis (Ogadenia). Somalis basically took over most of Ethiopia in the 1500's.

The Ethiopian king gave the arab early muslims asylum, the land they settled was in northern Somalia....Somalis slowly accepted Islam and began to form a Somali identity and later broke off from Ethiopia (Abyssinia)
