PoliticsRe: Nigeria Fared Better Under Regional System Of Govt, Says Umeh by akanke79(op): 1:32pm On Apr 08, 2021
The whole clamour for restructuring today and the fair call for return to regional arrangement were because the arrangement we have now has not helped the country. You could see that without that coup the northern region would have done better than what the states in the north are doing today. The Northern Region, under the visionary leadership of the late Sardauna, Alhaji Sir Ahmadu Bello witnessed tremendous development.

"The Western Region did very well under Obafemi Awolowo. Under Michael Okpara, so much development was recorded in the Eastern Region. Most of these regional governments' achievements were based on agricultural revolution. They relied on agric produce as the major source of income at that time. Nigeria was mainly an agrarian economy in the Northern, Eastern and Western regions.

"The Western Region had cocoa. The North had groundnut, cotton and other agric products, including cattle. The Eastern Region had palm produce, cassava and other agric produce. So, the economy then revolved around agriculture. Things were a lot better. At least, those of us who were young before the war can tell you that life was better at that time than now."

Umeh said the civil war that followed the 1966 coups brought distrust within the nation as the Nigerians no longer see themselves as one.

He explained that other nations of the world fought wars and they came out stronger. The United States of America, for example, fought so many wars. But, America today is prided as the strongest nation in the world. The different internal wars fought in America did not drag the country back.

"Rather, America became stronger through those wars. The way to build a nation is to pass through stages of disagreements, particularly in the case of Nigeria, where we have so many ethnic nationalities that make up Nigeria. Regrettably, we have not been able to properly deal with the aftermath of the Nigerian civil war. The misgivings triggered off by the civil war are still there," he pointed out.

He explained that ethnicity has remained a constant feature of Nigerian politics, adding that there are about over three hundred ethnic nationalities in Nigeria.

"These are people who speak different languages; people who have different religions and cultures. All of them are found in the geographical enclave called Nigeria. Any nation that has this kind of configuration will certainly need exceptional and extra-ordinary leadership to keep the people together. The only thing that can bring people together will be equity and fairness. Disappointingly, we have not had leaders (either during the military or civilian dispensation) who saw every ethnic nationality in Nigeria as an important part of the country. If we have had such people as leaders, Nigeria would have been very strong in its diversity. But it has not been so. It has been a situation where people who found themselves in power take power to the exclusion of others.

"And it has continued to generate tension. There is a growing disaffection over the way things have been done. Nigeria has continued to run a unitary system of government, never mind that they call it federal system of government. Nigeria is controlled from the centre. Whoever gets the mantle of leadership of the country controls everything happening in every part of Nigeria," he stated.

Nigeria Fared Better Under Regional System of Govt, Says Umeh

This Day (Lagos)
By Chuks Okocha
Abuja — A former National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Senator Victor Umeh, has said Nigeria was a lot better under the regional system of government, where each region was allowed to control resources found in its domain, but only had to pay royalty to the central government.

Umeh, who represented the people of Anambra Central Senatorial district for 17 months in the 8th Senate, disclosed this in an interview.

He lamented the current situation where too much power is being vested at the centre, thereby giving the federal government the leeway to run the country as a unitary system.

The former lawmaker noted that the 1966 coup d'état which disrupted Nigeria's democracy at that time was the beginning of the country's problem.

"If that coup hadn't taken place, our problem may not have been this bad today. Even though there were challenges in the country before the coup, but Nigeria was running a regional system of government - a parliamentary system of government - and the regions were pursuing development aggressively devoid of any problem. We had eastern, western and northern regions. We also had the mid-western region which was later created.

"And all these regions were developing at their own pace with the resources available to them. They were contributing royalties to the federal government. You could see that the speed of development was quite high. People controlled the resources available to them in their various regions. But, that coup that came in January 1966 overthrew the democratic government in place and brought in a military government headed by Aguiyi Ironsi.

Military officers were appointed to head the regional governments as governors. Auiyi Ironsi was assassinated in the counter-coup of July 1966 and Yakubu Gowon took over as the leader of the Nigeria military government. Gowon further created 12 states in Nigeria. With that, the regional governments were scrapped! There was nothing like regional government any more. The federal military government started controlling the states," Umeh explained.

The APGA chieftain added: "There is the clamour for us today to return to regional government. This is because there would be a minimum interference in the activities and governments of the regions by the federal government. Today, everything is centralised. It wasn't so under the regional government. For instance, apart from the police at the federal level, we had regional police that were under the control of the regional government at that time.

Benue: Herdsmen Paid N100m Fines In 3 Months – Miyetti Allah

The Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, the Fulani socio-cultural association, has said that some arrested herders in Benue State paid over N100m fine in compliance with the state’s anti-grazing law.

The National President of the association, Alhaji Bello Abdullahi Bodejo, and National Secretary, Engr. Saleh Alhassan, said this while speaking with reporters in Abuja on Thursday.

“Between January and March this year, Benue State Government has collected over N100m as fines and penalties from innocent Fulani pastoralists, especially in the Benue-Taraba and Benue-Nasarawa borders.”

Bandits Now Collect Marriage Fees In Zamfara

On a weekly program of BBC Hausa that I
was on last night, a father told a story that kept me awake. Bandits in Zamfara asked his brother to “lend” them his daughter for a week or they would destroy the family. They took her to the bush and raped for the period. His isn’t the only family.

He said families in their villages can’t conduct any wedding ceremony until they seek permission from bandits and pay them “marriage fees”. This is happening in a state where the Governor is taking photos with bandits, paying them and quarreling with soldiers to not attack them.

PoliticsThe Rising Cases Of Rape In Zamfara State -zamfara Circle by akanke79(op): 3:51pm On Feb 05, 2021
The rising cases of rape in Zamfara State: a collaborative approach.

The rising cases of rape have rightly captured the attention of Nigerians all over the country given media reports confirming such. It is on this basis that Zamfara Youth Charity Organization deemed it necessary to give its quota of support against the criminal act of rape.

Conscious of the fact that the same problem could have different circumstances depending on location, our Organization decided to act locally by collecting data & conducting a research on the incidence of rape in Zamfara State.

Thus, our Organization held an interview with the Hisbah Commission & Zamfara State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). We also collected data from Zamfara State Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) & Ministry of Justice.

On a weekly basis over the next 3 weeks, we will do a post on the data collected & the analysis drawn from the data, starting today with the interview held with Hisbah Commission & NSCDC. After that, our Organization, in collaboration with Zamfara Circle & Zamfara Youth Must Survive, will organize a program on the incidence of rape in Zamfara State.

The program is set to bring together the different stakeholders from all the three arms of government (Executive, Legislature, & Judiciary) purposely to analyze & agree on the obstacles hindering prosecution of rape cases, unnatural offences, as well as the possible strategies to prevent the cases from occurring in the first place, with a view of implementing the solutions presented.

On 17th July, 2020, we had an interview with the Director of Operations of the Hisbah Commission. He remarked that it is important to first of all understand the scope within which the Commission operates, which is that the Commission is only limited to investigation and presentation of its findings to court. The Commission is not a law enforcement body.

The Director also remarked that awareness of the nature of rape –its dangers, bodies to contact after its occurrence etc– on the part of our communities is highly important, & collaboration between the Commission & NGOs is essential in creating the needed awareness. Some of the cases the Commission handled include the following;

There was a small girl engaged in petty trading who, unfortunately, had a customer that eventually raped her. This customer was over 50 years old, & used economic incentive of paying above usual price for her products to lure her in an uncompleted building wherein he raped her.

In 2019, there was a case of a man that raped a school girl after luring her to himself using an economic incentive of giving her money; a meagre 50 naira to be exact. Another case occurred this year in an area named Unguwar Gwaza in Gusau where a married man saw a school girl crying on the street. He asked her what the problem was & she told him she had no school books & was sent back home from school. Instead being a responsible man by providing her what she lacks, he was cruel enough to give her 500 naira, which made her trust him, & he used that opportunity to rape her. The case is still being tried in court.

On 10th July this year, a case was brought to the Commission where a mother reported her husband sexually abusing their daughter, & the abuse has led to the daughter experiencing great difficulty in urinating. She cries every time she has to urinate. These are some of the cases the Commission has dealt with, even though there are many others.

The most contributing factors enabling rape, according to the Director, are economic incentives, immorality on the part of culprits, & ritual objectives. He added that most of the culprits are in their 40s & above, while most of the victims are children. He concluded by suggesting to parents to stop turning their children into petty traders. Also, there should be continuous Jumuat Huduba (Sermons) from religious scholars on the danger of rape and parental negligence.

In July this year, we held an interview with the Public Relations Officer (PRO), Zamfara State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence (NSCDC). The PRO first remarked that cases of rape are mainly handled by the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) & Hisbah Commission.

There were seven cases of rape (3 males/4 females) with the Command as at last year, & all of the victims were minors except for one. The case files are with the Ministry of Justice, & the cases are still in court.

In conclusion, it is worth noting that there are more unreported cases of rape than there are reported ones, & this was confirmed by the Hisbah Commission. We call on all stakeholders to put in more effort in curbing the menace of the criminal act of rape.

In line with the objective we streamlined of making Zamfara State great, parents, victims, & any third party with detailed knowledge of these happenings must play a role to break silence at the earliest possible time.

The Hisbah Commission, Police & other security & non-security agencies are our friends and are ever ready to assist us curb the menace of rape and sanitize the society..... FREE OF CHARGE.

Let us do this together!!!

It is a collective responsibility!!!

Christianity EtcRe: Church Tax in Europe and America by akanke79(op): 10:10am On Aug 17, 2020
Iceland
Taxpayers in Iceland who belong to an officially registered religious group or secular humanist organization must pay a congregation tax (Icelandic: sóknargjald, plural sóknargjöld) which is deducted from income taxes and goes to the individual's respective organization. In the past, the sóknargjald of those who do not belong to any recognized religious organization went to the University of Iceland, but this was changed in 2009. In cases of individuals not belonging to a registered religious group or secular humanist organization, the amount that would otherwise be used for the sóknargjald remains now part of the income tax budget. In 2015, the monthly sóknargjald amounted to 824 Icelandic krónur, about $US6.

The Church of Iceland receives governmental support beyond the congregation taxes paid by its members

Main article: Eight per thousand
Taxpayers in Italy pay a mandatory eight per thousand tax, and have the option to choose to whom they will assign the monies. This tax amounts to 0.8% of the total income tax (IRPEF) and every taxpayer can choose the recipient of the contribution on their tax form. Regardless of whether the taxpayer expresses a preference or not, the 0.8% is already included in their tax levy.

Currently the choices are:

Italian State
Catholic Church
Waldensian Evangelical Church
Seventh-day Adventist Church
Assemblies of God in Italy
Union of the Jewish Communities in Italy
Lutheran Evangelical Church in Italy
Baptist Evangelical Christian Union of Italy
Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Italy
Apostolic Church in Italy (Pentecostalism)
Italian Buddhist Union
Italian Hindu Union
If the choice is not expressly declared on the tax form, the tax is distributed according to the percentages of the taxpayers who have declared their choice of beneficiary. While it was intended that the state should use its own share of the 0.8% tax for social or cultural purposes, in practice it has employed it for general purposes including its military mission in Iraq in 2004 and the upgrading of prison infrastructure in 2011.

Christianity EtcChurch Tax in Europe and America by akanke79(op): 10:05am On Aug 17, 2020
A church tax is a tax imposed by the state on members of some religious congregations to provide financial support of churches, such as the salaries of its clergy and to pay the operating cost of the church. A church tax is imposed in Austria, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Iceland, Italy, Sweden, some parts of Switzerland and several other countries. In Spain and Portugal paying a church tax is optional.

The constitution of a number of countries such as the United States could be and have been interpreted as both supporting and prohibiting the levying of taxes unto churches; prohibiting church tax could separate church and state fiscally, but it could also be favorable treatment by the government. It is explicitly prohibited in India for the state to levy taxes on religious grounds under Article 27 of the Constitution of India. In Australia there is no specific constitutional exemption. Section 116 of the Constitution of Australia precludes the Commonwealth of Australia (i.e., the Federal parliament) from making laws for establishing any religion, imposing any religious observance, or prohibiting the free exercise of any religion, but it does not make any specific reference to taxation. Religious organisations are however exempt by virtue of legislation by the various Federal & State parliaments giving them charitable status.
Austria
Every recognized religious group in Austria can collect church tax at a rate of 1.1%, though currently only the Catholic Church makes use of that opportunity. Church tax is compulsory for Catholics in Austria. This tax was introduced by Adolf Hitler in 1939. After World War II, the tax was retained in order to keep the Church independent of political powers.

Denmark
Further information: Church of Denmark
The members of the national Church of Denmark pay a church tax, called "kirkeskat". The rate varies among municipalities with a minimum of 0.4% and a maximum of 1.3% of taxable income in 2019. The tax is generally around 0.7% of taxable income. The collection of the church tax is administered by the Danish tax authorities, but the church tax is not considered as a genuine tax by, for example, Statistics Denmark, but as a "voluntary transfer from households to the state".

The church tax does not cover the entire budget of the Church of Denmark. An additional 9% is paid by the government through block grants ("bloktilskud"wink, which means that people who are not members of the Church of Denmark also finance its activities through taxes.[8]

Finland
All members of either the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland and the Finnish Orthodox Church (the two state churches of Finland) pay an income-based church tax of between 1% and 2%, depending on the municipality. On average the tax is about 1.4%.

Formerly, to stop paying church tax, one had to formally leave the church by personally going to local register office and waiting during an allowance of time for reflection. This requirement was removed in 2003 and currently a written (but not signed) statement to the church suffices. The majority of resignations since 2005 are now handled through a web site, Eroakirkosta.fi. If one is a member of the church when the year begins, they will pay taxes for the whole year. Studies show that church membership resignations in Finland are mainly due to the general secularization of society, not because of tax avoidance.

Sweden
The members of Church of Sweden pay church fee, which varies between municipalities, but can be as much as 2%. Church and state are separated as of 2000; however, the burial tax (begravningsavgift) is paid by everyone regardless of membership.

In a recent[when?] development, the Swedish government has agreed to continue collecting from individual taxpayers the annual payment that has always gone to the church. But now the fee will be an optional checkoff box on the tax return. The government will allocate the money collected to Catholic, Muslim, Jewish and other faiths as well as the Lutherans, with each taxpayer directing where his or her taxes should go.

Switzerland
There is no official state church in Switzerland. However, except Geneva and Neuchâtel, each canton (state) financially supports at least one of the three traditional denominations – Roman Catholic, Old Catholic (in Switzerland Christian Catholic Church of Switzerland), or Evangelical Reformed – with funds collected through taxation. Each canton church tax may formally have to leave the church.[clarification needed] In some cantons private companies are unable to avoid payment of the church tax.

In Geneva and Neuchâtel there is no church tax : each taxpayer is free to make a voluntary tax deductible contribution or gift to his church, either directly to the beneficiary or using the canton (state) tax system.

United States
In the United States, the Establishment Clause of the US Constitution prevents the US federal government and (through incorporation doctrine), the 50 state governments from imposing church taxes. In 1947, the US Supreme Court ruled in Everson v. Board of Education that "No tax in any amount, large or small, can be levied to support any religious activities or institutions, whatever they may be called, or whatever form they may adopt to teach or practice religion."

In the past, some states established state religions and imposed church taxes to provide financial support; indeed, after the ratification of the Bill of Rights, the Establishment Clause protected these state churches from interference by the US Congress.[citation needed] In Massachusetts and Connecticut, the Congregational church was tax supported.[24] In colonial South Carolina, the Anglican Church benefited from church taxes

PoliticsHave You Heard Of The "Yoruba Biafran?" by akanke79(op): 11:45pm On Jul 08, 2020
Banjo almost captured Lagos for the Biafran Army in 1967, and his failure led to his execution.
There are some who believe that Nigeria’s Civil War, fought between 1967 and 1970, is not really a civil war, but a dispute between a set of tribes; Yoruba and Hausa on one and the East on the other.

This assertion does not consider people like Lt. Col. Banjo, the Yoruba soldier who rose among the ranks fighting for the Biafran Army and did so until his death at the height of the war.
Not much is known about Lt. Col. Banjo’s early life. He was born “Victor Adebukunola Banjo” as an Ijebu-man in Ogun State on April 1, 1930.
From Ogun’s foggy towns, he joined the Army as one of a generation of precocious young men in 1953 as Warrant Officer 52.

The records state that Banjo was the sixteenth Nigerian to be commissioned as an officer in the Nigerian Army, (NA 16).

In those days, Nigerian officers were entitled to training in England or nearby countries, by virtue of our colonial tie to Britain.

Banjo was a product of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, where he also obtained a B Sc. in Mechanical Engineering.

By the early 1960s, Banjo had risen to become the first Nigerian Director of the Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Corps of the Nigerian Army.

It was the ideal life. He was a young man in his 30s with a young wife and two children.
On January 15, 1966, many of Banjo’s peers executed the decision to take power from the civilian government.

They went on a rampage, killing many national and regional leaders in what we have now simplified into calling the 1966 coup. It is perhaps the most important day in Nigeria’s history.

Detention
It is also the day when Banjo’s travails began, the day when life decided to throw him through filters and ask questions that make a man wonder what drives him at the core.
Shortly after Major-General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi came to power following the 1966 coup, Lt. Col. Banjo was summoned to the office of the newly-selected Supreme Military Commander and was arrested while he was still waiting to see the Head of State.
Few people can say they understand what happened next but Banjo was accused of planning to kill the Head of State, General Aguiyi-Ironsi and summarily detained.
It has been suggested in accounts of that period that Ironsi was simply caught in the middle. The politics of the coup had been very tribal.
After a team of largely Igbo soldiers had murdered the majority of the North’s leaders, there was pressure on him.

From the North, he was expected to bring the coup plotters to justice. Eastern leaders were pleased that the perceived Northern stranglehold had been broken. Ironsi did not know what to do and the people needed scapegoats.

It was not the first time that matters of tribe would determine the course of his life.
Banjo was detained until the Northern counter-coup in the same year. In a different world, Banjo would have been released. But somewhere in the ripple effects of that coup, Banjo tried to stand up for a Yoruba soldier.

Despite protesting his innocence, he was thrown in jail for the second time. He would stay there until May 1967.

Letters from Prison
It is often said that adversity brings out the best in men. And while he would have flourished undoubtedly outside the prison walls, it was then that Banjo showed the moral fibre and liberal system of beliefs that would make him stand out at the most trying moments in his short life.
Most of these can be seen in his letters.
According to the book “A Gift of Sequins”, at the time, Banjo had a young family of four children. He did his best to staying touch and improve what was undoubtedly a hard time through constant letter writing.

Banjo’s letters revealed that he had a liberal, non-tribalistic worldview. At the core, he was a man who loved his country and wanted to see his fellow soldiers do much better.

When the Biafra War began, Banjo had been moved to a prison in the East. Colonel Odumegwu Ojukwu, the leader of the new Biafran nation, released him and made him a colonel.

Despite his tribe, Banjo sought to fight for the new country against what he saw as institutional tribalism and genocide.

Later he would say, “However when l discovered the emerging trend that followed the declaration of Independence of Biafra, it became clear to me that a war with the North was imminent."
“I decided to stay behind and assist in the prosecution of the war, both for the sake of my friendship with Colonel Ojukwu and in the hope that having assisted to fight back the Northern threat to Biafra, he would assist me with troops to rid the Mid-West and Lagos of the same menace.”

There was scepticism to his role in the Biafran Army, but Banjo quickly proved himself to his fellow soldiers and earned their belief.

The Yoruba Biafran
He proved himself as a master tactician and a fearless soldier, traits that he proved when the Biafran Army attacked Nigeria.
When the Nigerian Army invaded Biafra on July 6, 1967, Ojukwu sent Lt. Col. Banjo and Major Albert Okonkwo to invade Nigeria.

Banjo and his team moved quickly. He was able to capture Benin City in less than 24 hours.
By the time his division took a break, he and his soldiers were able to get within 300 kilometres of the Nigerian capital Lagos.

Something changed when they tried to enter Lagos.
The Biafran offensive on Lagos started heavily and with purpose. Reports of that time say it moved at a “lighting quick speed” but midway, Banjo, along with his fellow commanders, Okonkwo and Major Emmanuel Ifeajuna stopped and turned their army back to Biafra.
On getting back to Biafra, Ojukwu had the soldiers detained.

It is reported that Ojukwu saw their retreat as an act to sabotage Biafra’s existence.
Why they did is not exactly known. Some relations of Ifeajuna have made claims that, as the was war progressed, Banjo and Ifeajuna did not share the idea of a break up of Nigeria.
Their cases were taken to a tribunal. After the first tribunal dismissed the case, a second tribunal sentenced the soldiers to death.

At his sentencing, Banjo said, “ I came into the war at a moment of temporary collapse of the Biafran fighting effort, when it became quite clear to me that the fighting effort of the Biafran Army was not only being incompetently handled, but also being sabotaged.”

“Since then, it has been my fortune to command the Biafran troops on their successful exploits.”
“On the whole, l had in private, told Col Ojukwu that l could never be made to stand charged for having plotted against his office and his person. There was no plot against him”

On September 22, 1967, Banjo, Emmanuel Ifeajuna, and Philip Alale were marched into the Enugu city centre and tied to a pole. A firing squad of Biafran soldiers fired at them.

When Banjo was hit, he reportedly yelled defiantly, “I’m not dead yet!” and he had to be shot multiple times before he died.

Today, the legacy of the soldiers who fought on both sides has been largely forgotten. But in a country where tribal relations are still harsh, Lt. Col. Banjo set a template for living beyond tribe, for the greater purpose of humanity.

They were executed by firing squad on September 22, 1967.

The history of fratricide in the Ottoman Empire - Part 1

Undoubtedly, fratricide is one of the most controversial topics in Ottoman history. Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror's Law of Governance imparted the right of executing the male members of the dynasty to his son in order to prevent an interregnum. There were different practices regarding fratricide throughout the empire's history, with most of them seen as legitimate, but some executions, done to prevent a possible revolt, were criticized as illegitimate

The tradition of the 'kingdom being the common property of the dynasty,' which was a feature of old Turkish politics, continued after the convertion to Islam. Some Turkish rulers chose to divide their country into regions and gave them over to the administration of princes in order to prevent civil war. However, this practice

The First Umayyads & The Crisis of Succession | 661CE - 705CE

With the caliphate now in Muawiyah's hands, turned into a full-scale empire, a new era for the caliphate begins.

In this episode, I discuss Muawiyah's rule and the crisis of Succession that led to the second civil war between the Ummayads and Abdullah ibn Az Zubayr.

In Islamic Civilization in Thirty Lives by Chase F. Robinson, Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan is the fourth name. As the author puts it, "After Muhammad, Abd al-Malik did more than anyone else to engineer a religio-political vision of the caliphal rule". Abd al-Malik canonized the empire part of Islamic Empire. All the subsequent Islamic empires would follow his model.

Additional Facts:

1) The Ummayad Mosque in Damascus is believed by most Muslims to be the place Jesus will appear near the end of days.

2) Greek Fire was especially used in Naval Battles by the Byzantines because it couldn’t be extinguished by water.

3) Muawiyah was buried in a shirt that previously belonged to Muhammad who had gifted him the shirt.

4) The Ummayads including Muawiyah used a completely white flag. However, now, it’s used as a declaration of surrender.

5) Al-Mukhar’s revolt is also called the Shia Revolt but at this point, “Shia” was only someone who supported Ali’s family for the caliphate, not a sect.

Abd al-Malik, during his lifetime, consolidated Umayyad rule over the Islamic Empire. At the time of his death in 705 CE, he had left behind a monarchy, powerful enough to challenge any force on the planet and on the brink of expanding into Europe.

In this episode, I discuss the Ummayad Caliphs after Abd al-Malik including Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz and the conquests that happened around this time like the Conquest of Sindh and the Conquest of Spain. I also discuss the early causes of the rebellions against the Caliphate that eventually led to the Abbasid Revolution.

Additional Facts:

1) Abd al-Malik is considered one of the greatest Caliphs due to his contributions to the empire. He modernized it by installing a postal service and minting currency. He also constructed the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem.

2) Muhammad ibn Qasim’s legacy is very prominent in Modern-day Pakistan now. Port Qasim in Karachi is named after him. In this photo, the ruins an old mosque built in his name can be seen in Sukhur, Sindh.

3) Anas ibn Malik was a volunteer servant to Muhammad, not a slave. Muhammad did hold slaves but none after the first revelation. He did, however, have concubines and even had a son with one. The son passed away at a young age.

4) Anas was very close to Muhammad and is witness to many Hadiths. According to tradition, Muhammad blessed Anas for his service. As a “result”, he went on to live a little over a century and had around 80 children.

5) It’s said that when Umar was a prince he used to wear a robe worth 1200 Riyals alone which would rub across the ground as he would walk. When he became Caliph, his entire outfit, during his inaugural address, cost 3 Riyals.

IslamSultan Suleiman(1520-1566) Ottoman Empire Drama Series by akanke79(op): 6:28pm On May 10, 2020
Magnificent Century Full Episodes

Suleiman I (Ottoman Turkish: سلطان سليمان اول‎ Sultan Süleyman-ı Evvel; Turkish: Birinci Süleyman, Kanunî Sultan Süleyman or Muhteşem Süleyman;[4] 6 November 1494 – 6 September 1566), commonly known as Suleiman the Magnificent in the West and Kanunî Sultan Süleyman (Ottoman Turkish: قانونى سلطان سليمان‎; "Suleiman the Lawgiver"wink in his realm, was the tenth and longest-reigning Sultan of the Ottoman Empire from 1520 until his death in 1566.[5] Under his administration, the Ottoman state ruled over at least 25 million people.

Suleiman succeeded his father as sultan in September 1520 and began his reign with campaigns against the Christian powers in central Europe and the Mediterranean. Belgrade fell to him in 1521 and Rhodes, long under the rule of the Knights of St. John, in 1522–23. At Mohács, in August 1526, Suleiman broke the military strength of Hungary, with the Hungarian king Louis II losing his life in the battle.

Suleiman became a prominent monarch of 16th-century Europe, presiding over the apex of the Ottoman Empire's economic, military and political power. Suleiman personally led Ottoman armies in conquering the Christian strongholds of Belgrade and Rhodes as well as most of Hungary before his conquests were checked at the Siege of Vienna in 1529. He annexed much of the Middle East in his conflict with the Safavids and large areas of North Africa as far west as Algeria. Under his rule, the Ottoman fleet dominated the seas from the Mediterranean to the Red Sea and through the Persian Gulf.[6]

At the helm of an expanding empire, Suleiman personally instituted major legislative changes relating to society, education, taxation and criminal law. His reforms, carried out in conjunction with the empire's chief judicial official Ebussuud Efendi, harmonized the relationship between the two forms of Ottoman law: sultanic (Kanun) and religious (Sharia).[7] He was a distinguished poet and goldsmith; he also became a great patron of culture, overseeing the "Golden" age of the Ottoman Empire in its artistic, literary and architectural development.[8]

Breaking with Ottoman tradition, Suleiman married Hürrem Sultan, a woman from his harem, an Orthodox Christian of Ruthenian origin who converted to Islam, and who became famous in the West by the name Roxelana, purportedly due to her red hair. Their son Selim II succeeded Suleiman following his death in 1566 after 46 years of rule. Suleiman's other potential heirs, Mehmed and Mustafa, had died; the former had died from smallpox, and the latter had been strangled to death 13 years earlier at the sultan's order. His other son Bayezid was executed in 1561 on Suleiman's orders, along with Bayezid's four sons, after a rebellion. Although scholars no longer believe that the empire declined after his death,[9] the end of Suleiman's reign is still frequently characterized as a watershed in Ottoman history. In the decades after Suleiman, the empire began to experience significant political, institutional, and economic changes, a phenomenon often referred to as the Transformation of the Ottoman Empire.[10]

Dear All,
Please is there a way one can do background check on qualified and genuine medical doctors in Nigeria?
FamilyThe Professions Of The Narcissist by akanke79(op): 5:33am On Dec 23, 2019
The narcissist naturally gravitates towards those professions which guarantee the abundant and uninterrupted provision of Narcissistic Supply. He seeks to interact with people from a position of authority, advantage, or superiority. He thus elicits their automatic admiration, adulation, and affirmation - or, failing that, their fear and obedience.

Several vocations meet these requirements: teaching, the priesthood, show business, corporate management, the medical professions, politics, and sports. It is safe to predict that narcissists would be over-represented in these occupations.

The cerebral narcissist is likely to emphasize
his intellectual prowess and accomplishments (real and imaginary) in an attempt to solicit supply from awe-struck students, devoted parishioners, admiring voters, obsequious subordinates, or dependent patients. His somatic counterpart derives his sense of self-worth from body building, athletic achievements, tests of resilience or endurance, and sexual conquests.

The narcissistic medical doctor or mental health professional and his patients, the narcissistic guide, teacher, or mentor and his students, the narcissistic leader, guru, pundit, or psychic and his followers or admirers, and the narcissistic business tycoon, boss, or employer and his underlings - all are instances of Pathological Narcissistic Spaces.

This is a worrisome state of affairs. Narcissists are liars. They misrepresent their credentials, knowledge, talents, skills, and achievements. A narcissist medical doctor would rather let patients die than expose his ignorance. A narcissistic therapist often traumatizes his clients with his acting out, rage, exploitativeness, and lack of empathy. Narcissistic businessmen bring ruin on their firms and employees.

Moreover, even when all is "well", the narcissist's relationship with his sycophants is abusive. He perceives others as objects, mere instruments of gratification, dispensable and interchangeable. An addict, the narcissist tends to pursue an ever-larger dose of adoration, and an ever-bigger fix of attention, while gradually losing what's left of his moral constraints.

When his sources become weary, rebellious, tired, bored, disgusted, repelled, or plainly amused by the narcissist's incessant dependence, his childish craving for attention, his exaggerated or even paranoid fears which lead to obsessive-compulsive behaviours, and his "drama queen" temper tantrums - he resorts to emotional extortion, straight blackmail, abuse, or misuse of his authority, and criminal or antisocial conduct. If these fail, the narcissist devalues and discards the very people he so idealized and cherished only a short while before.

As opposed to their "normal" colleagues or peers, narcissists in authority lack empathy and ethical standards. Thus, they are prone to immorally, cynically, callously and consistently abuse their position. Their socialisation process - usually the product of problematic early relationships with Primary Objects (parents, or caregivers) - is often perturbed and results in social dysfunctioning.

Nor is the narcissist deterred by possible punishment or regards himself subject to Man-made laws. His sense of entitlement coupled with the conviction of his own superiority lead him to believe in his invincibility, invulnerability, immunity, and divinity. The narcissist holds human edicts, rules, and regulations in disdain and human penalties in disdain. He regards human needs and emotions as weaknesses to be predatorily exploited.

Founded in 2015, the International Center for theStudy of Violent Extremism (ICSVE) provides research, training, and strategic advice to government leaders, intelligence, defense, international organizations, police and civilian communities worldwide to prevent and deter the threat of violent extremism in the core areas such as capacity building and pragmatic support, countering extremist narrative, alternative narrative, developing community resilience, managing intervention activities, and training.

With our growing team of diverse academic and professional backgrounds, ICSVE grew out of Dr. Anne Speckhard’s work on counterterrorism and counter-radicalization spanning more than two decades.

Given the prolific use of media by terrorist organizations such as ISIS to spur their global reach and propaganda, fighting ISIS and similar groups in the digital and information realm has become a major pillar of our research activities. We take pride in our field-based primary research and evidence-based educational video materials that are carefully crafted to counter the efforts of extremist and terrorist organizations to publicize their propaganda and garner support for violence. We at ICSVE strongly believe that the voices of defectors and victims of terrorist groups should be the overriding force in our collective counter-narrative efforts. First-person research with extremists, terrorists, and their supporters, and evidence-based counter-messaging is what makes our organization stand out from the rest.

2. USA & Canada (Oxycontin,Fetanyl,Xanax)

Oxycotin was touted as a miracle, pain relief with few side effects and less addictive than morphine. Soon it was the most prescribed drug in Canada, with tragic results. We track Oxycotin's fall from grace, ending in 100 families filing a lawsuit. Jennifer Tryon reports.

Part 2 - When Oxycontin hit the market it was a big money maker - a drug to relieve pain all day long, an alternative to addictive narcotic pain pills. Prescriptions soared, but it wasn't long before stories of addiction, abuse and side effects surfaced. Jennifer Tryon reports.

Part 3 - In the US, the company that owned Oxycontin made a shocking admission - it lied, misleading doctors and the public, all in the name of pill popping profit. That left claims from thousands of Americans and Canadians, hooked like drug addicts. Jennifer Tryon reports.

Millions of the pills- both real and counterfeit- are available to buy on the streets for as little as 20p each. Islam and male circumcision

Muslims are still the largest single religious group to circumcise boys. In Islam circumcision is also known as tahara, meaning purification.

Circumcision is not mentioned in the Qur'an but it is highlighted in the Sunnah (the Prophet Muhammad's recorded words and actions). In the Sunnah, Muhammad stated that circumcision was a "law for men."

In more recent years, Adnan Oktar has been known for his televangelism on his TV channel, A9 TV, noted especially for featuring 'kittens', his female devotees.[6] His organization is commonly referred to as a cult,[7] and he has been described as the "most notorious cult leader in Turkey."[8] Oktar filed more than 5000 lawsuits against individuals for defamation in the last decade,[9] and led to blocking of a number of prominent websites in Turkey.
