The Senate has approved the nomination of Aliyu Saidu Abubakar as non-executive commissioner of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

Abubakar who is to represent the Northeast geopolitical zone in the commission was rejected in 2016 when Senator Bukola Saraki was the Senate President.

Also confirmed are Eng Uba Maska, executive commissioner (North West) for reappointment, Professor Millionaire Abowei, non-Executive director (South-South) and Abdulazeez Mohammed Salman (North Central).

President Buhari on Tuesday met behind closed doors with the new and immediate past Group Managing Director (GMD) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Baru had retired from the service of the corporation on July 7 after reaching the statutory 60 years retirement age.

Before his appointment, Kyari was the Group General Manager, Crude Oil Marketing Division of the NNPC. He was also the Nigerian National Representative at the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) since 2018.

He is believed to be committed to the emergence of an open, transparent and accountable industry based on international best practices, principles, and standards. The meeting with the President was still in progress at the time of filing this report.

Operatives of the Inspector-General of Police Special Intelligence Responses Team (IRT) have arrested six people for allegedly demolishing a building, which was under construction, at gunpoint in Emene-Nike area of Enugu State. Police alleged that the suspects were part of members of a land grabbing syndicate, which had been disturbing Emene-Nike community for long.

The suspects are Ikechukwu Nomeh, Tochukwu Nnamani, Uchenna James, Victor Asigah, Agustin Tochukwu and Anthony Nwobodo. The police disclosed that three locally-made guns, a sledge hammer and a knife were recovered from the suspects.

A police source said: “Aside from terrorising the community, these men are also in the business of intimidating and dispossessing land owners of their properties within the area." The suspects were said to have become persons of interest to the police, after they allegedly attempted to dispossess Mrs. Ngozi Egbe of her property. “They demolished a section of her building under construction at gunpoint,” alleged the police.

A Ghanaian, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, has called on his fellow countrymen to stop putting the label of criminals on Nigerians living in the West African country.

Otchere-Darko, who is the founder of a policy and research institute, Danquah Institute, made the call on his Facebook page.

He shared the front pages of two Ghanaian newspapers, where stories on Nigerians were prominently displayed.
