Why let people enjoy the pains of secession, if it will not solve their problems?

Why do you care so much for Igbos? The average Igbo person has a deep-seated hatred for Yorubas. If you don't know this then you have been sleeping on a bicycle for a long time.

Bia STOP this. You are making this thread turn to Igbo/Biafran bashing - I don't like it. YungMill is an Itshekiri man. Every1 on NL knows this but maybe you are new. We have to pick our battles. The Itshekiris/Binis you think you are fighting for will NEVER raise a finger to help Igbos. Their hearts especially the Itshekiris lie with their Yoruba relatives.

GIB - why are your people so confused like this? If somebody criticize an Osu they say the person must be Yoruba. Here is a question that Ndigbo must answer:

IS IT ONLY YORUBAS THAT HAVE A RIGHT TO CRITICIZE IGBOS? grin grin grin grin grin

As far as Biafra is concerned the following people can never be included in our new country: Yorubas and their relatives Itshekiris and Bini. Every sensible Igbo man knows where the heart of an Itshekiri man lies. They still are very grateful for Awolowo for installing the Olu of Warri in the midst of Ijaws and Urhobos both of whom are Biafrans. So Awolowo cheated Biafrans by installing a non-Biafran traditional title in the midst of Biafrans.

Which Biafran land? What is this one saying? Go to Warri and spew that rubbish. Biafrans my yanch grin grin grin grin grin grin grin

They are trouble-makers. The topic did not even have ANYTHING to do with Yorubas but the idiot decided to bring my people in with their Ojukwu propaganda. You know Ojukwu propaganda - "Yoruba are cowards." But when Ojukwu saw Adekunle coming for him he dressed up as an old woman and ran to Abidjan. So who is the coward? Ibos will never produce a Fela or a Gani or a Soyinka or a Falana or an Abiola in the next 1 million generations. They are the real cowards of Africa

Can you guys stop talking politics, let's celebrate our brothers from the other side of the divide, the itshekiri tribe has shown us the extent and influence of the Yoruba race,we even have Yorubas in benin, Togo and Ghana, are they lesser Yoruba if they are given other identity by the whites or other africans, even the Yoruba tag is an identity that separates us from a larger pool of homogeneous people.

Another tribe in Nigeria similar to Yoruba after itsekiri is Igala.

Yes. I have always been of the opinion that in the case of break up, the Itshekiris will do very well in a Niger-Delta Republic. The effective/mature manner the Warri crisis was eventually handled is testament to the fact the Ijaws, Urhobos and Itshekiris can work very well together IF they choose to. Although, the Ijaws might be reluctant to form a country with Bini/Edo, I think eventually both will reliance that it is in their best interest to be in the SAME country.

OP - someone mentioned that there is also some Portuguese influence. Could you please identify some of those words? I know that there are Portuguese influence with a few other languages in ND.

Also do you have the names of the traditional gods of the Itshekiri people? This would be very enlightening.

My grandpa's father told him a our ancestors migrated from present day Ogun State. That's why I will be visiting that state when I next visit Naija. I am an Itshekiri from Delta State but that will NEVER make me deny my Yoruba ancestors God forbid

Itshekiris are not Yoruba. They have given themselves another identity. Please dont bring insult to us. Let itshekiri stay on their own.
We need them not!

Its more complicated than that but I agree. Itshekiris are now a distinct group.

FisifunKododada:

Akin - you are one of the few honest guys on NL so I will ask you this question: How Yoruba do you think the Itshekiris are? And do you consider them members of the Oduduwa family?

Thanks for the confidence - Fisi. Here is my opinion:

Their language has an undeniable Yoruba template (based on what I have read and heard) but the people themselves culturally at some point decided to move away from their Ijebu etc. Yoruba culture and more towards a more Bini one. This is understandable since virtually every group (save Ijaw) in that region gets their cultural/political influence from their affinity to Bini. Outside of Ijaw, Bini is the biggest cultural influence in the Niger-Delta (used loosely). So, I can see how a smart Yoruba group surrounded by Bini influence would decide to assimilate culturally to the predominant culture in their new abode. But make no mistakes, many Itshekiris are still very aware of their Yoruba lineage and still respect it. Case in point - YungMill and his family.

Are they members of the Oduduwa family? By blood/lineage yes. In the current state of affairs nope.

Maybe. But I can't say since I have no experience with Ilaje. However, I am quite fluent in Ijebu so I can see some striking similarities when you pronounce the words out loud.

This seems to me to be Ijebu with a slight Niger-Delta twist. OP are there SIGNIFICANT differences between the Itshekiri spoken in the various Itshekiri communities Omadino, Orugbo, Obodo etc.?
