Chapter 3

The sound of bell giggling made everyone close their books. I looked at everyone in surprise since the commerce teacher was not through with his lectures. Surprisingly, he packed his books and walked out of the classroom while a tall girl followed him out.

I think she was the class monitor. I closed my books as my mother words came rushing into my head.

"As you are going to school, remember the family you came from. Don't be aggressive about anything. You are not attending that school to be among the popular girls squad, or to dress like a princess. You are there to read and become someone great in life. Don't be after material things. I trust you so don't dissapoint me".

I chuckled and shook my head as I assured myself that I won't disappoint my mom.

"You must be the welfare student. Am I right?.

I looked at the direction the voice, or rather the annoying question, came from. My eyes met a beautiful face with pink lips staring at me.

I studied the expression on her face, it wasn't a mockery one but a friendly expression. She was smiling at me with her books in her hands and a small blue fancy bag on her left shoulder.

"Welfare student?" I asked in confusion.

"Yes, that's what we call students who are not in affluence and on scholarship", She said still smiling.

She seemed excited though and her voice was so unique. Her British accent was so cool, I never thought a person's voice could sound so sweet in my ears.

"Forgive my manners. I'm Eniola but my friends call me Eni. Actually Eni is fine", She said smiling wider than before.

   "I'm Al.....'

"Alice, right?. I know your name. Gosh! You are so beautiful!".

I blushed and muttered a small thank you. I didn't think she would hear me but she did.

"You are welcome. Can we be friends?. I mean, can you join me for lunch?".

I smiled and stood up "Yes to both questions". I quickly gathered my books.

We headed to the cafeteria, I had my school bag on which contained some notebooks and textbooks. Mum bought only new notebooks while I used my old textbooks.

Eni was talking about the happenings in the school while I was so lost in thought thinking about the kind of kids I will meet in this school, until I bumped into something strong or should I say a person. I heard books falling on the floor and Eni asking me if I was alright.

"I'm so sorry", I said as I quickly bent down to pick the books.

     "It's fine".

I froze when I heard that voice, I looked up immediately to know who owns that smoothing voice. My eyes met with a handsome creature. He had small and shaped eyebrows, full lips and sexy eyes.

I can't really describe him but he was so handsome and light skinned. I quickly looked at the books when I realized that I was staring. I gathered the books and handed it over to Mr.Handsome.

"I'm really sorry", I said again.

   "No problem".

He walked out of the cafeteria while I looked at Eniola who had a mischievous smile on her face.

   "What?" I asked her.

"You just met Charles, my handsome cousin", she said smiling.

"Oh, so that's his name"  I thought.  "What?! Did she just say Cousin? ".

     Charles' POV

"I'm so hungry", I said to my best friend, Opeyemi.

"Why are you telling me?. Should I offer myself as food to satisfy your stomach?" Opeyemi said, he was looking at me as we walked to the cafeteria.

I hissed and shook my head. We were already in the cafeteria. My eyes caught Victoria staring at me while her two butterflies whispered stuff in her ears.

I've always known that I was handsome which made girls fall for me. Victoria was not exceptional, the worst was, she was too possessive of me.

I withdrew my gaze from her and headed to the fruit vendor.

"The usual?", the fruit seller asked, she looked like a lady in her 30's but I'm sure her age was beyond that.

I just nodded and she gave me a nylon filled with some mangoes and bananas. They are my favorite. I paid her, kept the fruits in my bag and carried my books in my hands. I was heading back to the exit when my eyes caught Victoria again.

This time, she winked at me and blew me a kiss. Geez! This girl is unbelievable. Then someone bumped into me, I looked at the person in front of me, she was beyond beautiful, her eyes were on my books on the floor. I watched as she bent to pick my books.

   "I'm so sorry".

She was not only beautiful but also had an angelic voice. I noticed her cute dimples too.

"It's fine". I watched as she raised her head to look at me. She had big cute eyes, I felt like I was drowning in those eyes and a shiny chocolate skin. She was indeed beautiful. I noticed her hair was full and relaxed. Though she braided it but one can easily notice that her hair was long.

I watched as she looked at the books and hurriedly gathered them, she stood up and handed it over to me.

"I'm really sorry". She said again.

"No problem", I didn't want to leave, I wanted to introduce myself to her but then I saw Femi waving at me at the exit. It was then, I noticed Eniola smiling mischievously. I walked past them.

"What was that all about?" Opeyemi asked.

I hissed "You can't ask any other reasonable questions, Opeyemi".

I walked past him as quickly as I could to avoid any silly question, then I heard Opeyemi laughing hard behind me.

"I saw the way you looked at the welfare student, bro. You like her?".

I froze and turned to look at my silly friend, he was laughing so hard.

Opeyemi is handsome, light skinned with small eyes and small lips. He is taller than me, though I'm tall too.

"What's so funny?. I don't like anyone", I turned sharply and headed to my classroom.

I lied. I felt drawn to that girl. I don't know her name yet, but she is so breathtaking and looks very innocent like an angel.

     "My Angel" I thought.

     Victoria's POV

"Silly bitch", I thought as I watched Charles staring at the welfare student while she gathered his books from the floor in a hurry. I knew he was attracted to her, I could see it in his eyes. I've known Charles since I was 6 years old. He was my playmate and we attended primary and high school together.

He suddenly withdrew from me after his mother's death. I don't think that was the reason though.

"Gosh! The welfare student is beautiful", I said.

"Yes, she is" Linda said "But I think she has gotten Charles attention".

"She dares not" I spat out as my face grew hot. No girl must be with Charles except me.

Linda shook her head as she took a sip from her orange juice and looked at Bose who had an evil smirk on her face.

"What if she does?" Linda asked, this time her eyes were on me.

"Then we get rid of her like the pest she is" Bose replied instantly.

I nodded, I love Bose more. Unlike Linda, she was good at getting rid of problems regardless of the risk involved.

   "I agree" I said

"Firstly we need to warn her. So that she will be cautious and stay out of the way. I mean, she is just a poor wrench. Probably too poor  to even say no to we the rich kids. A dirt like her can't possibly be causing problems for us" Bose said, she still had that evil smirk on her face.

"Even if it could risk her scholarship?" Linda asked with concern plastered on her face.

That's what I hate about her. She was too innocent.

"What do you care?!. Is she related to you?!. Do you know her?!" I yelled at her in disgust.

"No, but still she doesn't deserve what Bose is scheming up" Linda replied, this time I could see that she was already annoyed as she folded her arms and looked in the direction of the new girl.

"It's pointless arguing with Miss goody goody, Victoria" Bose said in mockery, while Linda hissed and kicked Bose foot. It only made Bose laugh while I smiled and looked at Linda, her face was still stern.

"Welfare student just headed to the restroom. Now is our chance to warn her" Bose said as she stood up and headed to the restroom, I followed suit while Linda stayed behind, she hated what Bose and I do but she was still a good friend, she is also loyal and honest, she was always there whenever I was lost and confused.

Bose and I entered the restroom and I saw the new girl washing her face.

"Madam" Bose said loud enough to get her attention.

The bitch turned to look at us. Even without makeup, she was still pretty.

"Can I help you?" She asked looking so innocent.

"Do you know us?" Bose asked, eying her from head to toe.

"No, I don't. Why the question?" She asked looking at me. She noticed that I was assessing her. I hated her voice, why did it have to be angelic?. Her big eyeballs and dimples also added to her beauty. I hate them too.

She had full long relaxed hair. Duh! Mine is relaxed but not long and full. Her small lips was naturally pink, mine was pink cause of my lip gloss. My lips was naturally dark red. Her nose was pointed but not perfect like mine, I will take that credit. But those annoying dimples, revealed themselves every time she opened her mouth.

"What's your name?" I asked without thinking.

    "Alice" she replied instantly.

Arrrgh! That voice again. "Well Alice, I will advise you to watch your back and stay away from Charles!" I yelled. I was starting to feel disgust, I had to shut her up. She is obviously more beautiful than I am.

"Charles?. I have no business with him", She responded.

"That's good. It should be that way. I don't even want to see you talking to him!" I yelled in anger.

"Why are you telling me all this?. Who are you?". She asked with so much courage. I heard Bose laugh.

"So much nerve huh! You are in no position to ask questions" Bose said, half yelling.

I felt bitter "If you don't do as I say, then watch your scholarship go down the drain" I smiled as I saw her face go blank. She was shocked and scared. I left the restroom feeling proud and Bose followed me.

Chapter 2

I stood at a corner in the parlor watching my mum take a huge gulp from the water Rose had held up for her close to her lips. Rose was my mum best friend since we moved to this area after dad's death. Both sold fish and onions respectively at the market.

We didn't use to live in this area. Dad rented a house at Ikeja Lagos state, Nigeria and he owned a big supermarket. While mum was a full time housewife, but after his death, the supermarket got burnt and we didn't get any compensation since it wasn't insured.

Mum couldn't find a job and dad got robbed of all his money in his account by his so called friend.

Of course, we couldn't provide any proof that the friend had robbed my dad. Later on, we couldn't pay the house rent. That's how we ended up here at mile 12, Lagos state, Nigeria.

"Thank you, Rose" Mum said, bringing me out of my thoughts.

"Florence, you should really take care of yourself. This isn't the first time something like this is happening. I thought you would have been cautious by now" Rose said with a serious face. My eyes widened in surprise.

"So something like this has happened before? Why wasn't I aware?". I asked

"Alice, I'm fine now, you don't have to worry" Mum said in a really calm voice.

I wanted to challenge her and tell her how annoyed I was with her over thinking attitude, but I will be sounding rude. I don't know about other countries but here in Nigeria. Your elders must be treated with 100% respect. Talking back and shouting at an elder is a sin.

I breathed in and out heavily but kept quiet. I watched as Rose left the house after telling my mum to stop thinking and watch her health. I didn't want to bring up the issue anymore so I decided to change the subject.

"Do you want to eat?".

"Yes, I would love to. Have you eaten?"

"I was not hungry". I said as I made my way to the bedroom. I heard mum speak from the parlour.

"You don't have to lie to me. I know the food was not enough for the both of us"

"You are more important", I said placing a spoon in the plate which was already filled with beans. I headed back to the parlor and placed the food on the table.

"You are important to me too, Alice".

I smiled and pecked her cheek "I know, mum" I headed back to the bedroom and returned with two sachets of water which I placed opposite her food and sat on a chair opposite her as I watched her eat her food.

"So do you have any gist for me?" She smiled and took a spoonful of beans in her mouth.

"Yes, I do." She looked at me "But you have to guess first" I said with a huge smile on my face. The thought of the good news alone made me extremely happy.

"You have a crush on someone?". I nearly choked on my saliva as I looked at her, I could feel my big eyes pulling out, then I noticed the smirk on her face. That's when I knew she was teasing me.

"Mum, its not that, seriously. Do you remember that examination I took for a scholarship at Royal college, Berger?." I watched as mum smiled.

"Yes, I do. Tell me it .....".

I interrupted her

"Yes, I passed, Joy helped me check and I've been offered the scholarship".

I giggled as mum stood up and pulled me into a tight hug. She was crying and soon I started crying too.

"Is she okay now?" Joy asked with worry written over her face.

"Yes she is. I'm just surprised, really. I never knew she was thinking too much to even pass out in the process. I'm grateful to God that she is okay. I don't know what would have happened to me if I lost her too" I said without looking at Joy as I folded the heap of jean trousers in front of me one by one.

"Did you tell her about the scholarship stuff?". I looked at Joy, she was checking out herself in front of the tall mirror in Madam NK's shop.

"Yes, I did. Thanks for yesterday". This time, she turned to look at me.

"Thanks for what?". She asked in confusion

"For helping me check the scholarship status on the net". She laughed lightly and turned back to the mirror.

"Seriously its nothing, I mean what are friends for anyway".

I smiled "Thanks anyways". I went back to what I was doing, my kneels were starting to ache since I was kneeling on the floor. Joy turned sharply from the corner of my eyes, i could see her with two hands on her waist and a cute smile on her face.

"So tell me, how do I look?". I looked at her and smiled.

"Beautiful as always" I said looking back at the clothes.

"Come on, Alice. We all know who the beautiful angel is".

I chuckled and looked at her in disbelief "Joy, I'm not pretty".

"I never said you were pretty, I said you are beautiful. Anyone can see how beautiful you look dear. You should start giving yourself some credit. More so, no lady is ugly. We are all beautiful and unique in our own way".

I knew Joy was being sincere. Everyone has told me I'm beautiful. I had brown skin, big cute eyeballs, long and full relaxed hair, I never liked the curly natural hair. I also had dimples which revealed itself often, I was slim and average in height. I had straight legs and shaped bushy eyebrows, my lips are pink naturally and I barely applied make up.

"Whatever you say Joy"

"You know I'm right. Anyway, when are you going to resume in that prestigious school?". Joy asked as she pulled a chair and sat opposite me to assist me in folding the clothes.

"Mum said Monday".

"Does she have the money for the school uniform and learning materials?"

"I really don't know Joy. And its not possible to buy everything in a day. I will get all I need little by little".

"Are you ready for the kind of kids you will meet there?". I looked at her and discovered that her eyes were on me.

"I'm not going there to make friends or make people accept me. I'm going there cause I have a dream and I want to make it a reality. Its not going to be easy, yes, but I'm going to overcome the trials".

"I trust you".

"Thank you, Joy. So what about john?". The happy expression on her face turned to a really annoyed one. Now I wished I hadn't asked. She looked at me and said

"That guy na fool, as in ehn big fool" That guy is a fool, a really big fool.

I couldn't help it, I laughed really hard. I didn't need anyone to tell me that they broke up. I was happy Joy finally realized that John was not good enough for her and his attitudes were not good either.

"I broke up with him" she said as she folded a pair of jeans and placed it neatly in the big box beside us.

"I'm glad you are finally back to your senses", She gave me a light punch in the arm and laughed really hard.

"Are you saying I was not with my senses before?".

I smiled "I'm not saying that Joy".

"I know I will find a good guy who deserves me, not a smoker and a womanizer. Duh! He thinks I will regret my decision. If only he knew how long the queue of my suitors was".

I laughed really hard this time. Joy is a beautiful lady. Unlike me, she was light skinned and had natural curly hair. A perfect pointed nose and she was tall, a bit taller than me though.

"Since ss2, I've had a lot of admirers. Though this section is almost coming to an end but I know this ss3......hmm, let me just stop there", she said with a big smile on her face.

"Too bad, I won't be with you guys anymore starting from on Monday".

"I will miss you, even though we will always meet here. I'm sure you will find your first love there".

"Keep dreaming dear" We laughed then silence took over as we packed the pairs of jeans.

Introduction/Chapter 1

Hello everyone, I'm Chioma Akonam Sophia. I'm Nigerian. I love movies, music and stories. This is actually my first time of writing on wattpad and nairaland. That means UNFORGIVABLE is my first book.

   About the book

UNFORGIVABLE is a book about forgiveness. Its not real, it's a fiction.

   Most of the parts of the story lines are real, things like;

- The names : Names are real but not as it is used in this story

- The places: Nigeria is a country, Lagos is a state in Nigeria. The locations, bus stops and so on are real.

- The universities: University of Lagos(UNILAG) and University of Abuja (UNIABUJA) are also real.

I hope you enjoy this story based on teenagers and the challenges they face.

"Mom" I called out, very weak and stressed. Working as a sales girl with a mean boss was not an easy task for a 16 years old Lady. I hate referring myself as a girl, I've been in situations only a Lady can handle. I was hungry and it was so obvious cause my stomach was already grumbling.

I found mum lying on the only couch in the parlor, I can't call it a living room cause it looks more like a kitchen. Mum was lying on the couch with her eyes closed. She looked so innocent and beautiful while sleeping, even when she was awake, she looked more beautiful and was always wearing a cute smile. I assumed she was asleep and I didn't want to wake her, so I found my way to the bedroom. Our kitchen and bedroom was just the same. One stove at the corner, with some black nylons filled with little garri (Cassava flour) and beans, then a small tuber of yam and three packs of noodles.

A pot was on the stove probably with my dinner in it. I quickly opened the pot and found the usual, beans and yam. I don't blame my mum, she works really hard to put food on the table, I was her only child and I know that if she had more money, I will eat well, probably without repeating the same meal everyday.

On Sundays, we usually have a different meal, noodles and fried fish which mum sells at the market. That was her only source of income. I had no strength in me to take a shower at least, I dished out my food and ate like my life depended on it. After my meal, I laid on the mat thinking about my life and how messed up it has been since I was 12 years. I looked at the bed across the room, mum usually occupy the bed. It was not so big enough for two people, so I insisted on sleeping on the mat regardless of my mum protesting against it.

I drafted into deep sleep and woke up at 6:20am. I felt better than last night, I looked at the bed and couldn't find mum.

"Did she sleep on the couch all night?" I said to no one.

I said a short prayer and went to check on mum. She was still asleep, I did my chores and took my bath. I picked a pair of blue jeans and a pink shirt. Pink was my favorite color. I didn't eat breakfast cause if I did, none will be left for mum.
I heated the food, turned off the gas and went to Check on mum. I was surprised to see her still sleeping. I admired her beautiful face for a while, I didn't want to disturb her really but I have to let her know I was leaving for work. It was strange though to still find her sleeping, she wasn't a deep sleeper unlike me. Little noises could wake her. Maybe I didn't make any noise after all. I tapped her softly, knowing quite well that my soft touch could wake her, but strangely she didn't move a muscle.

I could feel my heart pounding so hard like my rib cage was about to burst. It was then I noticed that she has been in the same position since I got back from work last night. My head was spinning, I shook her really hard.

"MUM!!!"

Still nothing, I lost my balance and fell on the floor. I was really trembling with goosebumps all over my body, I felt cold. I felt warm tears falling from my eyes, I didn't know what to do. I wasn't thinking anymore.

"Was she dead?" I asked myself. "Mum is gone too?"

I managed to stand up, I suddenly felt so weak and tired, I went close to her, and checked her pulse. She was still breathing. Probably unconscious. I dashed out of the house without putting on my footwear. I don't remember closing the door either and I didn't care. I just ran to Rose house like a mad lady, I was still crying bitterly.

My name is Alice and the woman unconscious on the couch is my mother, Florence. Dad died when I  was 12 years old and since then, life has been really difficult. Like I said earlier, mum sells fried fish at the market. I attended a public school a little distance from our house, after school hours, I work at NK's shop as a sales girl. I work from 4pm to 9pm every week days and from 8am - 9pm on Saturdays.

Now you know, today is Saturday and it's about to be the worst Saturday in my life.
