Ewaste has nothing to do with free trade but weak environmental protection laws |
Phew! Ghana needs to stop being a dumping ground of the west's e-waste. Its very ironical that Europe dumps its e-waste in Ghana and a Ghanaian in this video is saying he wants to stop sifting through the e-waste to go to Europe. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mW89_KMlN1c&t=312s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uou_223HFns?si=kZJsAb5CLcUopR1i |
The Wandering Investor who specializes in the international real estate market has just bought three apartments in Nairobi. This guy is literally an SI Unit of real estate investment. If you seem him investing in your market its a sure bet. You'd think such smart guys would start avoiding Kenya after Kenyans roundly rejected the IMF bill but apparently they see more potential here than elsewhere. These guys were in West Africa and Southern Africa but did not invest in any real estate there finding the markets less attractive and depressed. Ladislas correctly deduces that the Kenyan market tends to be more resilient and lucrative because investments to Kenya basically come from all over the world, from other African countries, the West, the East, Global North and South - and Kenya never relies on single industries such as oil or agriculture or tourism. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=24EAr0oYEkk&t=404s Hot on the heels of this: Malaysian investors also committed themselves to helping Kenya enter the lucrative semi-conductor manufacturing industry at Konza City just a day ago. On the global stage, Malaysia is recognised as the sixth largest exporter of semiconductors, commanding 13% of the global market for semiconductor packaging, assembly and testing while driving 40% of the nation's export output. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Ls8RnvgwFA |
Chris Senanu is a succesful Ghanaian living in Kenya. He says it like it is this legend. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5MexMlgjpaE?si=0B4aegBET-XaFirR |
I watched this street debate few days ago where Nigerians/West Africans seem to be trooping enmasse to Germany (japa) for jobs only for the Germans to form a company in Nairobi specifically to recruit Kenyans https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6zmjuWD1ZR0 |
See what the hapless Naira has done to Eko Atlantic. Investors cannot start/complete their projects and the city is now starting to look like a potemkin village. 17 years later. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gQ_AypjilEo&t=334s Meanwhile Kenya's Konza which kicked off years later has zoomed past Eko Atlantic with all horizontal infrastructure laid and vertical infrastructure coming up furiously. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OglkWAKScp8&t=938s |
Emirates opens Africa's first premium store in Nairobi, Kenya. The world’s largest international airline has opened its Emirates World store in Nairobi, Kenya, underscoring its commitment to deliver an elevated customer experience, alongside world-class products and services to the market. Nairobi is the third city globally after London and Hong Kong to receive this new development. The Africa opening is part of Emirates gradual global roll-out of the store network, which will eventually see 40 stores around the world. It follows recent openings in Hong Kong and London, which were the first Emirates World stores in Asia and Europe respectively. This opening introduces the airline’s refreshed retail store concept to Africa for the first time, with more stores planned across the market in the coming months. Centrally located in the ultra-modern Cube, Riverside Drive, the Emirates World store offers customers expert travel advice, either from dedicated consultants or through self-service smart technologies, and immersive displays to bring the airline’s signature product closer to travellers from Kenya. Emirates is fast approaching an important milestone in Nairobi: it’s 30th anniversary. Since the first flight in October 1995, Emirates has flown over five million passengers to and from Kenya on double daily flights from Dubai. In 2023, Emirates established an interline partnership with Kenya Airways, providing seamless connectivity to an additional 28 points in Africa through Nairobi, including Mombasa, Kigali, Bangui, Nampula, Kilimanjaro and more. In the last year, over 12,000 passengers have taken advantage of the agreement, exploring more with frictionless travel. Designed with an open-plan, lounge-like ambiance, the Emirates World store spans over 330 square meters and features a light and airy color palette. The space offers Kenyan travelers an inviting environment to engage with its renowned hospitality and explore the airline’s offerings. The store’s immersive displays bring the Emirates experience to life. These include a full-size showcase of the iconic Emirates A380 Onboard Lounge and a selfie mirror that allows customers to capture images with scenic destination backdrops.

vaxx:Thats why few Ghanaians are selected. Countries with historically large immigration to the US are entirely ineligible. But why 2M Ghanaians applying for less than 3k slots? Thats the highest number in the world coming from a country of only 30M. |
Some statistics are just mind boggling - and reveal alot. Each year about 2 million Ghanaians apply for the Greencard lottery hoping for a chance to immigrate to the US - thats 6% of the country!! The only other African country with such insane numbers is Sierra Leone with over a million applicants each year. Of these, only a paltry 2-3 k are selected from Ghana! Worldwide the over million club includes just three countries, Ghana, SL, Uzbekistan. You have to wonder what makes such a huge chunk of a country's population be so hellbent on immigrating. Compare that to Kenya where only about 300k (<1%) apply but over 4k are selected! Kenya is actually one of the top 15 countries with the highest number of selectees for the dv program worldwide alongside Russia, Iran, Egypt, Morocco, and Algeria.

World’s largest floating university docks in Mombasa for the third time in 15 months. The vessel runs an education programme dubbed, ‘Semester at Sea’ administered by the Institute of Shipboard Education in partnership with Colorado State University. Each student pays Kshs 6 M or approx 47K USD per semester. The students are drawn from over 20 nations. The ship is converted to a college campus, and they spend between 100 and 105 days on the cruise ship, 50 per cent of the days in classes on the ship, and the rest of the voyage exploring different countries. They will have exchange programmes with the Technical University of Mombasa and Kenyatta University. Odyssey has a similar feel to a college or university and is designed to accommodate approx 800 participants. It carries students around the world learning the histories of the countries they visit. The students are of mixed nationalities with one Kenyan student aboard. The ship will be visiting Mauritius as the next port of call. Just like other institutions of higher learning, the ship has reception and administrative offices, where there is a welcoming reception desk area with around-the-clock crew presence as well as the Semester at Sea field programme and administrative staff. It has nine classrooms, each with state-of-the-art technology to support learning plus a fitness space including an indoor gym. Outside features include a spacious sun deck for recreational activities, including a basketball and a volleyball court. It also has a pool where passengers can enjoy swimming. The Mombasa Cruise Ship Terminus caters to various leisure cruise liners that dock at Mombasa several times a year. Between September and March, large cruise liners such as the Norwegian Dawn, MSC Poesia, and MS Ambience as well as the more boutique ships such as the Seabourn Sojourn and Hapag-Lloyd’s MS Europa bring guests to Kenya’s east coast. The Mombasa Port’s Cruise Terminal is a large building painted white and brown and comprising three levels offering restaurants, lounges, duty-free stores and even conference facilities. Visitors are welcomed by a group of local dancers performing traditional dance and song, and the Immigration and customs procedures run smoothly. Visitors arriving off cruise ships are left in awe of the capacity of the Mombasa port with 19 deep-water berths and 5 container berths. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BkZ7Jb1D7z8&t=253s |
Kenya shows Nigeria’s missed textile apparel export opportunities Kenya exported US$603 million (Kshs 60 B) worth of clothes to the US in 2022. Kenya is the second-largest exporter of textile and apparel products to the United States among Agoa beneficiaries. Meanwhile Nigeria IMPORTED N365.5 billion/ $862.23 million worth of clothes in the same year. Nigeria’s high cost of production makes local textile and apparel makers uncompetitive, and discourages investments. During the 1970s and early 1980s, Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation, boasted over 180 textile mills, employing more than one million Nigerians. Among these mills were United Nigerian Textile Limited, Aswani Textile, Afprint, Asaba Textile Mills, and Edo Textile Mills. However, by the 1990s, these once-thriving firms vanished due to challenges such as smuggling, rampant importation, unreliable power supply, inconsistent government policies, and insecurity, making it impossible for them to remain competitive.

IGpro1:Is there any hope for Nigeria getting a similar center with the erratic power supply and shortage of integrity? Obviously you'll be trooping into Kenya for the nclex exam as the guy says being that Nigerians are no longer eligible for the dv lottery program and this is perhaps the last hope, but as long as you use Kenya Airways to and fro we have no qualms. |
Nigerian shocked by the Kenyan highway system ... no emotions please ![]() This guy actually came all the way from Naija to do an international nursing exam. In the whole of Nigeria/West Africa there wasnt. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ciW_3te19ko&t=162s |

This democratization of information has contributed to a more informed and engaged citizenry.

StivoH2022:He's worried about the low inflation turning into deflation. |
AskiaHarem:Ok, I'll give it another try. Nigeria's inflation rate is high due to a number of factors: Currency depreciation: The naira has depreciated, which has contributed to inflation. Fuel prices: Higher gasoline prices have contributed to inflation. Transportation costs: Transportation costs have increased, which has contributed to inflation. Food prices: Food prices have increased, which has contributed to inflation. Food inflation accounts for a large portion of Nigeria's inflation. Reforms: Reforms by the government, such as cutting subsidies for electricity and petrol, have contributed to inflation. But why the huge difference yet both countries are in the mid of structural adjustments. Kenya's inflation this month is at 2.7 %, just a month after the opposition joined to save govt, which was teetering on the cusp of the abyss. Biggest blame is the naira. |
AskiaHarem:Is this really true because I've seen the Naira was allowed to float freely for the first time in decades and it tanked like crazy. No rebasing was done. Also, inflation is in the high 32-33 % which is the highest for 28 years. So there is no way you can say nothing has changed on the ground. Judging by the way Nigerians swiftly left the streets and ended protests after receiving a token of rice its very likely things arent really good. |
Kenya has been voted to become a member of the International Ice Hockey Federation, Ice Hockey’s FIFA equivalent. During the international congress held in Greece, Kenya and Bahrain were voted in as new members with no reservations. Such overwhelming approval suggests that both teams effectively met the expectations and standards set by the International Ice Hockey Federation, highlighting their commendable performance in recent tournaments. This milestone now opens the doors for the creation of competitive local leagues in both countries and participation in international competitions. Aside from South Africa, Kenya is the only sub-Saharan African country with an ice rink. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gjV4gd5Oo2g

My reading of the current happenings in the country is we are sitting on a serious powder keg. People need to be very careful, moreso the leaders. They cant afford to get it wrong twice. The consequences will be dire. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IMgI2IZCTZE&t=176s |
Someone was asking what the numerous airstrips in Kenya are used for. The great aviation guru Sam Chui has a great video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p0Q93kHnS1U&t=339s |
Before the war in Myanmar, Kenya hosted the two largest refugee camps in the world, Kakuma and Dadaab. They are so big they are effectively among the top 10 largest cities in the country by population with each camp hosting over 250 K people. The total number of registered refugees and asylum seekers in Kenya is over half a million. Compared with the previous years, there is an increase in the total population of refugees, mainly because of new arrivals from South Sudan, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia and Somalia. As of 31 January 2023, Dadaab Refugee Camp population stood at 339,108 individuals (70,766 households). Of these, 233,828 individuals (45,338 households) are registered/documented. A total of 105,280 individuals (25,428 households) were profiled awaiting registration by the Department of Refugee Services (DRS). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ix_EICvHeH4&t=890s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nyCIAeg1CKU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iW4SN3e4Uug?si=eEMi50gTtLZziCqV

Asianplug:I think everyone is trying in their own way. Dust in many parts of Africa is a result of Sahara and dry conditions, something you wont find in SE Asia with their rainforests and mangroves. But some SE Asian countries are as shytholic as any African country if not worse. Asia as a whole has the rich, middle, and poor countries. Rich include Japan, S. Korea, China, Singapore, Malaysia, middle include Philipines, Indonesia, India and so forth, then the poor are countries like Laos that have become mini-colonies of the Chinese, Burma with the unending ethnic wars, Cambodia after the Khmer Rouge still looks like an apocalyptic super farm. The countries that have failed Africa the most are the ones who were promising in the past, read Nigeria, Ghana, SA, Kenya etc. These are countries that should by now be in the leagues of S. Korea. But they are definitely better than the worst in Asia by far! But there are definitely somewhat success stories in Africa too, countries that rose from the dust so to speak, such as Rwanda after the genocide has put its act together, Botswana has managed to improve itself through proper resource management, Namibia too, and the island nations of Mauritius, Seychelles, and Cape Verde. Africans need to do more though, no doubt.! |
Asianplug:Whats the difference between SE Asian shytholes like Myanmar, Cambodia, Timor-Leste, and Laos and African countries like CAR, Swaziland, Congo, Niger, Togo, and Somalia? |
popizaino:That definitely includes small airstrips and private airstrips. National parks in Kenya have lots of those, plus private ranches like Vipingo Golf Course have their own. JKIA & Wilson - Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Eldoret, Isiolo, and Lamu are the major airports in Kenya. The rest are small airstrips with several in each county.

I think we finally have a video that aptly covers the world-class amenities at Konza Technopolis. The laying of horizontal infrastructure is finally done at this Smart City - smartest in Africa. Some of the advanced features shown in this excellent video include; automatic waste management through vending machines (street garbage is automatically sucked into a tunnel for instant incineration and/or recycling), humongous utility tunnels crisscrossing the city, smart poles (panic/emergency buttons on every street light and smart sensors and cameras connected to fast-speed wifi for monitoring the weather, traffic, and security), advanced water/sewer management system, underground powerlines, drone corridor, etc etc. The second phase has kicked off in earnest which is the building of vertical infrastructure, i.e buildings. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OglkWAKScp8 |
