Politics / Massob Dares Police Over Uwazuruike by Akpaife(m): 5:12am On Aug 26, 2014 |
Movement for the Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) has warned the police against defying a court order to arrest their leader, Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, saying such action would force the group to jettison its non-violent approach to the struggle. The movement said the warning became imperative due to intelligence report it received that the police was planning to arrest their leader, Uwazuruike against the order of the court. Heavy fighting was reported to have broken out at the headquarters of MASSOB at Okwe in Onuimo Local Government Area of Imo State between some members of the movement and loyalists of Uwazuruike, which led to the death of about four persons. Following this development, Imo State Police command invited the MASSOB leader for questioning, threatening to declare him wanted if he failed to report to the command's headquarters in Owerri. However, on Friday last week, Uwazuruike headed to an Owerri High Court, where he got an order restraining the police from arresting or declaring him wanted if he failed to honour their invitation. Speaking in Aba, Abia State, MASSOB's Acting Director of Information, Sunny Okereafor said it was wrong in the first place, for police to have invited Uwazuruike over the Okwe incident, which he said the group's leader had no hands in. Okereafor said the Okwe incident was a family matter, which MASSOB was going to handle in the normal Igbo communal way of resolving issues, and that did not require the involvement of the police which he described as MASSOB's number one enemy. He said: "Last week's incident at our headquarters in Okwe, although was unfortunate, but it's a family matter. We are going to handle it the way the Igbo communally resolve their problems, which does not require the involvement of the police. "Police should know that they are MASSOB's number one enemy and their coming into the matter would not help matters. Before inviting our leader, Uwazuruike, to their office, they should first account for the thousands of MASSOB members they massacred," Okereafor said. But the Imo State Police Command at the weekend, vowed to arrest Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, despite an existing court order restraining it from arresting him. The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Andrew Enwerem, said the police would track down Chief Uwazuruike wherever he might be hiding, to explain his role in the crisis. "What we are talking about is murder. He must come and answer the charges. Court cannot stop him from being interrogated," he said. According to him, "the police will hunt him down wherever he may run to. http://odili.net/news/source/2014/aug/25/511.html |
Politics / Confusion Over Nigeria Soldiers In Cameroon by Akpaife(m): 4:58am On Aug 26, 2014 |
There is confusion over why some 480 Nigerians soldiers are now in Cameroon. Whereas it has been alleged that the soldiers fled the fierce battle ground while fighting against members of the outlawed Boko Haram extremists, for Cameroon, weekend, but Nigerian Army authority has said that the soldiers only engaged in what it termed tactical manoeuvre. The Cameroonian Army said the soldiers have been disarmed and are accommodated in schools, the BBC reported yesterday. The Defence Headquarters has however, explained that Nigerian troops found in Cameroun was as a result of sustained battle between the soldiers and Boko Haram terrorists around the borders with Cameroon which saw the Nigerian troops “charging through the borders in a tactical manoeuvre.” A statement by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Chris Olukolade, said a unit of soldiers fighting insurgents found themselves on Cameroonian soil even though it was not planned and this happened because of the terrain and common boundaries shared by the two countries, which sometimes, was difficult to differentiate. “Being allies, the normal protocol of managing such incidents demanded that the troops submit their weapons in order to assure the friendly country that they were not on a hostile mission. When the incident was noticed, the issues were sorted out following necessary discussions between Nigerian and Cameroonian military authorities. Subsequently, the troops were escorted back into Nigeria and they are on their way back to join their unit in Nigeria.” This is coming even as the insurgents who have recently laid claim to a part of Adamawa State appear to be making further inroads into the state. Residents of Madagali Local Government area of the state have said that the insurgents have urged them to go about their normal businesses, claiming that they are in charge of the entire areas but needed their cooperation. Residents of Gulak, Madagali and other communities in the area described every minute bombardment by the insurgents as worrisome and tormenting. Barrister Ahmed Gulak, former Special Adviser on Political Matter to President Goodluck Jonathan who happened to be an indigene of the area also described the situation there as beyond comments. Gulak, who spoke to newsmen in his country home in Yola observed that the situation, if not well handled, may mean the insurgents might be heading towards the state capital soonest. Residents of the areas who spoke on phone with journalists confirmed that the insurgents are in full control of the entire communities with no presence of security men. According to the villagers, the insurgents have been patrolling the streets of Madagali and Gulak as well as the highway leading to Borno State, urging the people to go about their normal business and ignore the curfew imposed by the Adamawa State Government. According to the villagers, the insurgents claimed that they are in full control of the areas and government is imposing curfew and challenged the Nigeria security to come there and enforce the curfew. It will be recalled that the state government has imposed a 24-hour curfew on Madagali Local Government Area of the state as part of measures to curb the escalating insurgent attacks in adjourning villages in the border between Adamawa and Borno states. The Adamawa State government in a statement in Yola Monday, observed that it has no alternative than to take such measures as the insurgency attacks in the area deteriorate at every minute of the day. Nigerian soldiers have repeatedly complained about their weapons, and have accused their superiors of exposing them to a better armed Boko Haram. http://www.mydailynewswatchng.com/confusion-nigerian-soldiers-cameroon/ |

Politics / Uwazuruike Obtains Court Orders Against Arrest by Akpaife(m): 5:31am On Aug 23, 2014 |
The embattled leader of the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, yesterday obtained court injunction from an Owerri High court restraining the Commissioner Police, Imo State and his agents from carrying out their threat of arresting or declaring him wanted should he fail to honour their summons over the crisis rocking the group in which four persons died. The Imo State police command had on Thursday during press briefing summoned the MASSOB leader to appear before the commissioner within 24 hours to explain his role or involvement in the fracas that had resulted in the death of four members of the group at the Okwe Freedom House, Headquarters, or be declared a wanted person in the state. However, Chief Ralph Uwauzurike in his application for an order for the enforcement of his fundamental right, maintained that the police never extended any invitation to him whether orally or written, stating that such action of the police constitutes gross violation of his fundamental right to fair hearing as provided under the 1999 Constitution as amended and is therefore unconstitutional, null and void and of no effect whatever. In suit No: HOW/ 549/2914 filed against the Commissioner of Police, Imo State, by his lawyer, Barrister Emma Chukwuka, the MASSOB leader is seeking a declaration that the threat by the respondents to declare him wanted when no invitation whatever was given to him, when he has not committed any offense known to law to warrant such declaration constitutes a violation of his rights to liberty as provided under the said constitution and therefore null and void and of no effect whatsoever. He pleaded for an order to restrain the respondents, and their agents from declaring him wanted as he did not commit any offense warranting the respondents to declare him wanted, and injunction restraining the respondents, either by their servants, agents or privies from any manhunt of him and from further violation of his fundamental rights and from arresting or detaining him when he has not committed any offence known to law pending the determination of the suit. http://sunnewsonline.com/new/?p=78300 |

Politics / Voter Cards For Sale In Onitsha by Akpaife(m): 6:52am On Aug 22, 2014 |
The Continuous Voters Registration (CVR) exercise in the 326 wards and registration collation centres in Anambra State, yesterday turned sour when some officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Onitsha were accused of selling the voter cards and registration intent form for N200 and N500 respectively. It was alleged that in some registration collation centres in the commercial city of Onitsha, some INEC staff allegedly demanded between N200 and N500 from people waiting to be registered before they were given forms to fill. Though the Public Relations Officer of INEC in the state, Mr. Frank Egbo, said the commission had a form, which every intending voter must fill and submit before registration, he stressed that the forms were not for sale. At the Nigeria Customs Service Barracks, Onitsha, it was gathered that the INEC staff deployed to the area made brisk business with the photocopies of the forms, which they allegedly gave out to unsuspecting members of the public at N200 and N500 respectively. One of the victims of the fraud, who pleaded anonymity, said they had been coming to the venue of the registration since Wednesday without success following the faulty machines and the fraudulent activities of some INEC staff, whom he accused of receiving financial gratification to register people. A police source, who pleaded anonymity, said even the materials that were meant for CVR in Okpoko Police Station were allegedly diverted to an unknown place by some INEC staff. http://sunnewsonline.com/new/?p=78177 |

A-19-year-old apprentice welder (names withheld) was caught today making love to a hen. The fowl reportedly died during the act. The taboo was said to have been committed by the apprentice at about 11.20 p.m. at Continental area of Akure metropolis. The suspect, Vanguard learnt, had committed same taboo with a goat in his home town, Afo in Ose council area of the state. He was said to have been ex-communicated from his home town because of the offence which made him to move in with his brother in Akure. Speaking with newsmen, the owner of fowl, Mrs Stella Akintola, who resides in the same building confirmed that the man actually made love to her chicken. According to her, she went to bed early but was woken up by the noise coming from the chickens at the back of her room, an indication that someone was disturbing their peace. The discovery Akintola said she went outside only to find that the back door was still opened. According to her, she became curious and “I shouted to know who was still at the backyard only for him to appear from the corner of the house, saying he went to the toilet because he had a running stomach.” Akintola said she was not convinced especially as she noticed that the noise from the chickens’ pen stopped abruptly. She said she went to where the chickens were but nothing was found. “It was when I visited the toilet that I found one of the them stone dead with its feathers littering the floor,” she said. Still unaware that the suspect was the cause of the death of the bird, Akintola said she raised an alarm only for him to confess that he was responsible for the death of the fowl. Akintola said the suspect confessed and begged her for forgiveness, saying he would pay any amount for the dead fowl. She said she decided not to report the matter to the police because she could not stand the rigour she would be subjected to by the police over a "minor offence." Report had it that there were evidence that the man actually had sex with the hen when it was examined by the owner and others living in the building. http://odili.net/news/source/2014/aug/20/312.html |

Politics / Ribadu Picks PDP Adamawa Gov Election From by Akpaife(m): 3:57am On Aug 19, 2014 |
The 2011 presidential candidate of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, on Monday picked up the Peoples Democratic Party’s Expression of Interest form to contest for the governorship of Adamawa State. Ribadu, who defected to the ruling PDP recently, said he had applied to the national leadership of the party for a waiver to contest the party’s governorship primary in Adamawa. The PDP form was picked for the former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crime Commission by his political associate, Alhaji Ahmidu Mahmoud. Mahmoud, who spoke with journalists after he paid N11m for the form, said Ribadu was ready for the party’s primary and that he was confident of getting the waiver. He said, “I’m here on behalf of Ribadu to purchase the nomination form in order to enable him contest the governorship primary in Adamwa State. “We have commenced the process of getting waiver. The waiver clause in the party’s constitution was not inserted because of him. “He is expected to enjoy the waiver. We have applied for the waiver and we expect that he would get it.” He denied insinuations that Ribadu had been banking on the support of President Goodluck Jonathan to win the primary and the election, which the Independent National Electoral Commission has fixed for October 11, 2014. “We are not aware that the President wants him, but some PDP chieftains in our state called him. He doesn’t need to have any structure on ground to win. He is ready to contest the primary,” Mahmoud added. Our correspondent learnt that Ribadu’s letter for waiver, which he addressed to the National Chairman of the party, Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu, was dated August 16. The letter, which was sighted by our correspondent, read in part, “I wish to humbly write to apply for a clearance/waiver to enable me aspire for position on the platform of this great party. “As a fresher in the party, I have duly obtained my membership, paid required dues. I hereby tender photocopies, including my voter’s card for your necessary action”. Rbadu had on August 1 applied to join the PDP, promising to “adhere to the party’s constitution, promptly pay my fees and actively participate in party activities.” The former chairman of the EFCC also promised to “take all necessary steps to propagate and execute the aims and objectives of the great party, PDP” if his application would be accepted. If he gets the waiver, Ribadu will slug it out at the primary with the likes of the Acting Governor, Umar Fintiri; a former Special Adviser to President Jonathan on Political Affairs, Ahmed Gulak; a former Military Administrator of Lagos State, Brig-Gen. Mohammed Marwa (retd.) and a former Minister of State for Health, Idi Hong. http://www.punchng.com/news/ribadu-picks-pdp-adamawa-gov-election-form/ |

ENUGU-The embattled deputy governor of Enugu State, Mr. Sunday Onyebuchi, yesterday, declared that he was not afraid of being removed from office. He, however, said he would ensure Nigerians, particularly the people of Enugu State who elected him along with Governor Sullivan Chime, knew the truth concerning his travails. Democracy under trial Speaking with journalists shortly after the 7-man probe panel investigating allegations against him adjourned sitting, Onyebuchi said Nigeria's democracy was on trial in Enugu State. The impeachment panel which had at its inaugural sitting on Wednesday, directed that journalists would not be allowed to witness its proceedings after the inauguration, however, made a u-turn yesterday, following the complaints made by the legal team of the deputy governor against the decision. Expresses confidence Mr. Onyebuchi, who expressed confidence that justice would triumph over falsehood, said: "It is true that I am the one standing trial but I want to say also that our democracy is also standing trial. I want to say also that justice is on trail; I want to say also that the integrity of all those involved, including that of the panel members, is on trail. "I believe that no matter how we want to manipulate truth and try to embellish it, eventually, if not now, the truth will triumph over falsehood." Laments travails Lamenting his current travails, the deputy governor said: "This is a situation where the person who is being marched did not complain, rather the person, who is marching on him is the one complaining. "On the poultry in question, by January 27, all the birds were removed; I did not know what happened to them, whether they were sold or eaten; I never complained, rather the person who took my birds is the one complaining." Continuing, Onyebuchi, who was accompanied by his wife, Mrs Nneka Ada Onyebuchi, to the panel, said he was confident that it was a straight forward case. He stressed: "I believe that I have not committed any crime; I am here because I believe that it is better to defend myself and protect my hard earned reputation; it is more important to me than even the office of the Deputy Governor. "I do not mind leaving the office but the public must know that I did not commit any offence, that I did not do anything that will justify my being removed. Let Nigerians judge "Let the people of Enugu State, let Nigerians be the judge as to how honourable members of the Enugu State House of Assembly are in this matter. I believe that eventually, I will triumph; there is a panel of man, there is a court of man, but more importantly, there is a court of God where nobody can manipulate the truth. He will also give his verdict at the appropriate time", he added. But for the arguments made before the panel by the Deputy Governor's five-man team of lawyers led by Chris Aghanwa, journalists would have been prevented from covering the panel's proceedings yesterday. Barring the media The deputy governor's lawyers opposed the restriction order on media coverage, forcing the panel chairman, Mr. Oraekeyi Franklin, to bend backward but insisted that cameras would not be allowed into the hall. The lawyer had sighted the cases of Adamawa and Nasarawa States, where the panels carried out their investigations in the full glare of the public through live telecast of the proceedings, and wondered why the case of Enugu State should be different. |
Politics / Ebola:expert Cautions Against Using Of Salt As Treatment by Akpaife(m): 12:26pm On Aug 09, 2014 |
The expert on Public Health told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ilorin that he had received such messages and calls from people asking for the authenticity of the claim. He said that the claim had not been medically proven that bathing with salt and drinking salt solution could cure or protect one from the Ebola virus. Ebola disease is contracted through close contact with blood, saliva, sweat, semen or secretions from organs of infected individuals and animals. People are only advised to disinfect their surroundings with one cup of Jik in nine cups of water solution in all their surrounding daily," he explained. According to the epidemiologist, there is no evidence to show that drinking salt can kill the virus. Oguntoye also warned people against using Jik solution to bath, adding that the solution is only to disinfect the surroundings against the virus. The expert reiterated that the virus is deadly with high mortality rate and no known cure. NAN reports that the outbreak of the Ebola virus had sickened 1,711 people and killed 932, according to World Health Organisation (WHO). (NAN) http://odili.net/news/source/2014/aug/8/3.html |
