WHAT IS MENINGITIS?
Meningitis is an acute inflammation of the meninges. The membranes which covers the brain and spinal cord are called meninges which are dura mater, arachnoid mater and pia mater.

Symptoms Of Meningitis
Detecting if someone have been infected with meningitis can be very difficult ecpecially at it early stage. The symptom of meningitis also tends to vary depending on the type of meningitis or the age of the affected person(adult or children).
Symptoms of meningitis in children includes:
1. Fever.
2. Sleepiness.
3. Low appetite.
4. Rapid or difficulty in breathing.
5. Lack of energy.

Symptoms of Meningitis in Adult.
1. Headache.
2. Stiff neck.
4. Fever.
4. Photophobia (dislike of bright lights).
5. Seizures.
6. Nausea.
7. Decreased Appetite.

Types Of Meningitis
There are basically five (5) types of meningitis namely: Bacterial, Fungal, Viral, Parasitic and Non-infectious meningitis.
From the five (5) types listed above, fungal and bacterial meningitis is the most common type of meningitis.
1. Virus Meningitis: The most causes of viral meningitis are caused by enteroviruses. Other viruses such as influenza, mumps, measles also causes meningitis.
2. Bacterial Meningitis: This types of meningitis is a life-threating form of disease that can cause brain damage, heavy loss or death when not properly treated. The type of bacterial that can cause bacterial meningitis includes Haemophilus influenzae, Neisseria meningitidis and streptococcus pneumoniae.
3. Fungal Meningitis: This occurs when fungus enters the bloodstream. People with low or weakened immune system tends to be at higher risk.
4. Non-infectious meningitis: This type of meningitis cannot be contacted from another person. It occurs as a result of head surgery, cancer, lupus, head injury.
5. Parasitic Meningitis: Naegleria fowleri (a parasite) is the source for primary amebic meningoencephalitis(PAM), a rare type type of parasitic meningitis. This type of disease causes a infection that progress rapidly. Parasitic meningitis cannot be transferred by contact with affected person.

Diagnosis Of Meningitis
The diagnosis of meningitis is done by collection of laboratory blood test or cerebrospinal fluid (fluid near the spinal cord) test.
Other ways of diagnosing meningitis includes: chest x-ray to check presence of pneumonia, tuberculosis or other fungal infections and through CT scan of the head to check for problems like brain abscess or sinusitis.

Treatment Of Meningitis
The treatment of meningitis is determined by the cause or type of meningitis.
Early and immediate treatment is required for bacterial meningitis to prevent brain damage and death of the patient. Bacterial meningitis is treated with intravenous antibiotics.
Fungal meningitis is treated with anti fungal agents.
Viral meningitis isn't traeted. It usually resolve on it own. There is no serious longterm problems associated with viral meningitis.

Prevention Of Meningitis
1. Maintain proper hygiene (wash your hands regularly)
2. Avoid droplets of respiratory secretion during close contact such as kissing, sneezing or coughing.
3. Wash your hands after having contact with someone who has meningitis.
Avoid overcrowding.
4. Get vaccinated against the disease.
5. Avoid self medication.
6. Proper disposal of respiratory and throat secretion.

Meningitis: Governor accused of mishandling outbreak in state with over 200 deaths, blames ‘God’

Governor Abdulaziz Yari of Zamfara State has said that the ongoing outbreak of Type C Cerebrospinal Meningitis is God’s way of showing his anger against Nigerians for turning their back on him.

Mr. Yari said this on Tuesday while speaking with journalists at the presidential Villa Abuja shortly after meeting with President Muhammdu Buhari.

Zamfara is the worst hit state since the outbreak of the disease, with over 200 persons killed and several others receiving treatment at various hospitals and clinics.
The Nigeria Medical Association in Zamfara had last weekend accused the government of Mr. Yari of failing to prepare for the outbreak of the despite warnings, and not responding adequately to the epidemic.

Some residents, who also spoke to PREMIUM TIMES over the weekend, accused the government of “neglect”.
Mr. Yari however said the outbreak might not be unconnected to the people’s total disregard of God’s commandments.

“What we used to know as far as meningitis is concerned is the type A virus. The World Health Organisation, WHO, has carried out vaccinations against this type A virus not just in Zamfara, but many other states.
“However, because people refused to stop their nefarious activities, God now decided to send Type C virus, which has no vaccination.

“People have turned away from God and he has promised that ‘if you do anyhow, you see anyhow’ that is just the cause of this outbreak as far as I am concerned.

“There is no way fornication will be so rampant and God will not send a disease that cannot be cured,” the governor said.
Dispelling insinuations that his government failed to act accordingly, Mr. Yari said he called an emergency meeting comprising of all top state and local government officials and traditional rulers, adding that “the meeting came out with a strategy to be adopted and the money required to deal with the outbreak and a lot of work is going on”.

The Zamfara governor said relevant organisations across the globe had announced that there were only 5 million doses of the vaccine against the Type C virus. “That is not enough for Zamfara people alone, not to talk of Katsina or Kano,” he said.

He said Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Health has only 50,000 doses of the vaccine, out of which 20,000 was given to Zamfara state because of the high rate of the disease in the state.
“Our focus as a state now is to continue treating those who are infected with the disease, but as for vaccination, it has an international dimension.

“We have information that Nigeria will get the highest percentage of the 5 million doses available now. Apart from WHO, other International bodies such as the Bill Gates foundation and UNICEF are also currently focusing on how to tackle the outbreak,” he said.
The governor express the hope that the outbreak would eventually be tackled, but, hsaid “the most important thing is for our people to know that their relationship with God is not smooth. All they need to do is repent and everything will be all right.”

Asked if only the people need repentance and not leaders, Mr. Yari said “leaders are doing their best by enlightening the populace and working assiduously for the good of all.
“Your major assignment as a leader is to convey the message; you cannot go from house to House and arrest offenders for instance,” he said.

Transplant surgery will be day before wedding anniversary

Traditionally china is the perfect gift to give for a 20th wedding anniversary. But A Virginia man is about to give his wife something much better for their big milestone -- his kidney.
Scott Chafian's wife Cindy suffers from polycystic kidney disease and has been on dialysis for almost two years.
She's endured multiple surgeries and has gotten progressively sicker. That's been tough for Scott Chafian to witness.

"It's devastating," he told CNN affiliate WTKR "it was just a feeling of helplessness."

So he decided to do something about it. He told his wife he wanted to give her his kidney. He had offered up his kidney six years ago, but she wouldn't take it. Then her health took a turn for the worst last year.

"I hit kind of rock bottom, and I looked at him and I said okay, I'm ready," said Cindy Chafian.
The transplant surgery will be on January 24 -- the day before their 20th anniversary.

"He called me and he told me that everything was a go. He gave me a date and that was the first time I allowed myself any emotion and I actually cried," she said.

Now the family is busy raising funds, not just for the surgery but also for the recovery. The couple will be not be able to work while they recover, so they've set up a GoFundMe page to help defray costs.

Cindy Chafian couldn't be happier with the gift -- a chance at a better life -- that she's about to receive from her husband.

"To know that he's kind of giving me that ability is even more of an amazing gift. He powers me in so many ways ... he is literally going to give me life. So it's an amazing gift."
