nkanmi Akoni & Monsuru Olowoopejo LAGOS—Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State has written to President Goodluck Jonathan over the legality of the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme and Federal Road Maintenance Agency, SURE-P/FERMA task force and for occupying the old toll gate axis of the state without observing due process. Babatunde Raji Fashola Fashola disclosed this yesterday while addressing police officers, businessmen and others, at the Eight Town Hall meeting on security, themed, “Maintaining our collective resolve in fighting crime,” held at the City Hall, Lagos Island axis of the state. The new development came after barrage of attacks from the state government and the All Progressives Congress, APC on the SURE-P/FERMA task force, which was expected to commence operation before the end of this year, 2014. The governor who spoke at the event organised by the Lagos State Security Trust Fund, LSSTF, lamented that the presence of the SURE-P/FERMA task force without any Government official accounting for their presence showed the laxity in the central government plan to fight insurgency. He said: “I have written to President Goodluck Jonathan and I want action to be taken immediately. This is because when you gather people like that, without any clear mandate, it is a worrisome assembly.” “And lately, they (SURE-P/FERMA taskforce) brought out their responsibilities and they said that part of their responsibilities was to manage the federal highways. And one would ask, what happens to the Federal Road Safety Corp, FRSC. They also claim that they would be controlling the erection of advert billboards. But that was a local government responsibility in the country. “It is obvious that little regards is paid at the centre to the ‘broken window’ theory, a theory that propounds that small acts disrespect for the law, unaddressed over a long period will ultimately snowball and lead to a brea |

Presidential Goodluck Ebele Jonathan during his visit to PDP rally at Tafawa Balewa Square in Lagos commended the National Coordinator SURE – P/FERMA Federal Task force, Alhaji Abdulrazak Rafiu popularly known as Otto, for his effort in assembling members of the force. The President while commending the Officers in their full capacity of about 15,000 officers on ground, said he was very delighted and happy with the effort of the cordinator. In a statement signed by the National Director of Publicity of the SURE – P/FERMA Federal Task Force, Olawale Oyeboh, the National Coordinator, said his men were on ground to build up a security wall of defense for the President as a way of showing appreciation, dedication, and full loyalty. Adding that in respect of the recent approval that his men are to maintain and manage traffic on all Federal roads across Lagos State. Otto said he is excited with the commendation from the president which he revealed was only achieved through hard work and perseverance . He also noted that he was delighted that the SURE – P/ FERMA Federal Task Force has come to stay and would resume operation anytime from now immediately after the P.O.P Parade from their newly approved Head Office at Stack Yard Ijora- Olopa, Lagos – State. It would be recalled that Otto some time ago disclosed that the Federal Government of Nigeria decided to set up the Federal Task Force because of its awareness of sufferings of youths in the state and as such assist the state. He added that president Goodluck Jonathan has even made an attempt to help the state personally but the government of Lagos state has not giving him the opportunity to do so. It said any attack on his men may spark a row with the Federal Government. It said LASTMA should respect the 2004 court ruling which said that its jurisdiction do...es not extend to federal roads in the state. Speaking in his office last week, the National Coordinator of the Task Force Alhaji Abdulrazak Rafiu-Otto, said LASTMA should allow his officers and men to perform the duties for which they were employed. He stated that the men’s duties were the management and maintainance of traffic across all federal roads in Lagos and the recovery of all Federal Government properties and infrastructure in the state. Rafiu-Otto, who insisted that the Task Force has nothing against LASTMA, appealed that the latter stay off federal roads and concentrate efforts of its officers and men to ridding the state roads of the traffic gridlock that is intractable in the state. He said his agency would be willing to collaborate with LASTMA in the overall objective of riding the state of gridlocks. Wondering why the state government would raise a false alarm on the activities of his men, Rafiu-Otto said the agency was not illegal, as it was created by President Goodluck Jonathan as part of the SURE-P initiative which has provided jobs for thousands of Nigerian youths. He said there is no truth in the allegations that the Task Force is a band of political thugs recruited to prosecute the 2015 election, saying such claims was aimed at causing violence and confusion. He said “The officers recruited by the Federal Task Force are not thugs, but unemployed graduates and adults looking for a means of livelihood and they all appreciated that the empowerment is already yielding fruits.” He wondered why the Federal Government has not ejected them from its premises at the old toll gate site if they were illegal. He said arrangements are almost concluded to have President Jonathan inaugurate the Federal Task Force and deploy them to all federal roads across the country. “This would be perfected in a matter of weeks. What we are all waiting for is the necessary basic support from the Nigeria Police, the Department of S |

Raising the alarm, the national coordinator stated that some fraudulent people had started selling the fake forms to unknown job seekers, promising them employment in the establishment, adding that the forms were currently being sold in Kogi, Kwara, Oyo, Osun, Edo and Delta states. Contrary to the position of those behind the sale of the fake forms that recruitment would hold across the country, Otto explained that the commencement of activities of the establishment would initially be limited to Lagos, before extension to the South-West and other parts of the country. While warning those behind the illegal sale to desist from the act, he assured that anybody caught in the illegal act would be made to face the music, saying: “ the Sure-P/FERMA Federal Taskforce created to manage traffic on federal roads and to recover stolen federal government property is known for its standard, discipline and loyalty in the discharge of its federal duties. Hence, anything contrary to this is unacceptable. “As it has been brought to our notice that some unknown public individuals have been trying to dent the good image of the newly established Sure-P/FERMA Federal Taskforce by indulging in some fraudulent acts like the selling of the Sure-P/FERMA Federal Taskforce forms in other states like: Kogi, Kwara, Ibadan, Osun, Edo, Delta. “This displays a v |

you are such a pathetic sadist! |
prettythicksme:for your mind! |
@hayjaycity you claim to know everything but going through your post i think its needless engaging you in any kind of arguement.but MR KNOWITALL" it is called CONCURRENT" not RECURRENT.moreso i dont think you understand what i ws trying to say i guess you are a slow learner.what i meant ws does the federal govt need legislative backing to employ into FERMA or SURE P. remember these are already existing agencies recognised by the constitution.besides what is happening in toll gate according to the law is recruitment into existing agency(FERMA) to be funded by sure p under its social safety net programme.moreso you said traffic control is under the concurrent list.i.e both the federal and state govt can legislate on items in this list.but i want to ask you, when there is clash of interest between the federal and state govt in the concurrent list which one is upheld? |
@hayjaycity.i respect your views but i think you need to be enightened. -does the constitution recognise sure p and ferma - does the federal govt need legislative approval to recruit new workers? -have you bothered to ask yourself why it was named SURE P FERMA TASKFORCE?the reason is to solve two major problems they may encounter which include OPERATIONAL-FERMA.remember ferma has the mandate to maintain federal highways FINANCE-SURE P.subvention to the organisation will be made through sure p.y do you think BRF has not gone to court to challenge the establishment of this tskforce. |

[quote author=emmysoftyou post=27796462]any latest information on federal task force so far.....? Has the federal government intervene on our behalf...? Because fashola told the lastma not to back off or recognised us as federal taskforce since the FTF has no legimate back up frm the ministry and it s not yet codified into law.. To him,the only recognised agency for now is lastma and FRSC.. And fashola said that federal govt should be honest to themselves if they really want to give us the job. Is Sure P or Ferma recognised by law?does the President have powers to create sub agencies under existing agencies?have you bothered to ask yourself why it is called sure p ferma tskforce?finding answers to these questions will do you alot of good. |

unuane1:if you think so afterall you have a right to your view. |
unuane1:because benin is under Lagos command.i.e lagos will post officers to benin. |
@unuane i never wanted to comment but i think i should clear your ignorance on what realy transpired in benin.Mr Isreal who claim to be the cordinator of federal task benin command, registered as a cadet officer in lagos command.as soon as he got wind of the fact that edo state is under Lagos command,mr isreal through the assistance of 2Ic got a letter from management to enable him secure office space @ thefederal secretariat benin.as soon as he secured the office 2ic instructed myself and three other cadet officers to go and inspect the office.on getting there Mr isreal told us that benin command is independent of lagos command in otherwords there will be recruitment of cadet officers in benin command.i demanded to know if 2ic is aware of this he said no because 2ic chikened out when he was trying to secure approval from abuja.i was not too convinced i had to call 2ic and the director of operation intimating them about this development and they adviced never to be part of that illegality.when he was eventualy arrested, the security men wrote Federal taskforce lagos demanding to know if they were aware of the activities of mr isreal.Lagos command disowned him that was why he was arrested.mind you,the letter they gave him from lagos was duly signed by sss. |
