I get daily calls and chats about feed management for cat fish and it has become very important to put our heads together to find a way out. From my personal experience & findings, I discovered that there's no big farm that substain on buying feeds - foreign or local. All the big farms and those growing big make their own feeds in their farms (on-farm made feed). And this is the major secret in catfish farming business.
If you want to make it big or run a profitable commercial catfish farming, you must first of all learn how to produce fish feed for your fish. Feed is the most important component of catfish farming business because it detates the profits and losses in the business. With the new forex policy (high exchange rate) buying feeds for commercial production of catfish is no longer profitable; hence the need for on-farm made feeds, except your running a small fish garden. The good thing is that there are various locally made feed Mechines that are very affordable. So, producing feeds of different sizes can be done with much ease. I used to spend between N50,000 to N70,000 buying feeds every week until I got this secret that now keep my farm running with less than N60,000 in a full month. Am sure you now understand what I have been saying! I now run my farm very comfortably and at the lowest cost with profit garrantee.
If you need more info and want to learn fish feed formulation and how to get the local feed machine, then you can contact: Trans-D-earth Nig Ltd on 08032953318.
Note that we offer a 3days onfarm practical training to both farmers and intended farmers on how to produce your own fish feed either for your farm or to sell to other farmers. You will also learn how you can source for very cheap feed ingredients; even some many you can get for free.
Training cost is N40,000. (including hotel accommodation and lunch)

Foreign vs Local Feeds

I have never believed or have hope in locally (Nigerian made) feed until now. Within the last two weeks, I have had an experience that made me very excited. I tried Vital and Aqua Boom feeds last year, they all seem to me like a waste of time and resources as very little or no growth was visibly observed after weeks of application. Early this year, I also tried Top feed, it was a little ok but mortality rate was much. Understand me please, am not discrediting any brand just sharing my personal experience on feeds. I decided strictly on foreign feeds irrespective of their recent high cost. Within the past weeks, feeds scarcity has given farmers especially in Rivers state, something to worry about. However, I got a contact to try out a very local feed production from Ogun State and it was awesome the performance of the feed that I saw in my fishes within one week.

Before I started the local feed on one of my ponds, I weighed the 2months old fishes (@random) and got an average of 137g. After a week of the local feed application, I reweighed and got 182g giving a difference of 45g increase. I honestly think this is quite commendable for a local feed as it's even better than most of the foreign feeds I have used. The most beautiful thing is the fish health that I noticed. Before the local feed, I used to have a daily mortality of 2 to 5 fishes even with treatments, but just after the first 4 days, I observed no single fish died. I was and am still very Happy about this because uptil now (7days after) am yet to record a single mortality. Meanwhile, this was the first time I was to use sinking feed and as such the only challenge was getting my stock to get used to the sinking perttan as they were used to floating feed. At the end, the trouble was worth it. Feed is not about the name, package or brand, it's about performance and result.
I made bold to recommend this feed because I have conformed it.
In case you may want to try it out too, you can contact one of their agents on 0805 405 0458 am sure you will be glad you did. But please, if you try it and it works for you you too should do well to tell other farmers about it. But please note that their minimum order is 1000kg and as such, smaller farm owners can combine to place order (just a clue anyway) so as to enjoy distributor's price.

Someone may as; what's your interest in all these? It's simple. My interest is lets encourage our own indiginous products rather than foreign ones. They (foreign products)already have good government to help them improve and develop more on their products faster, especially in terms of packaging and branding. We too can enjoy local supply of good products when we patronise our local manufacturers and help them grow because its only when they make more money that they can improve on their facilities to enhance better production. All the biggest brands in the world today had their humble beginning. Patronise made in Nigeria, grow our economy and stop wasting money unnecessarily foreign brands.

Pont Construction:

Following the series of complains and questions on the best way to construct a concrete fish pond, I have decided to share more details on this subject. My civil engineering background gives me a good knowledge and experience on how best a concrete fish pond should be constructed.

There are two ways this can be done - (1) using vibrated solid blocks walls (2) using reinforced concrete walls

The first one above provides a cheaper option since blocks are less expensive compared to concrete. However, the proposed block walls need to be supported by a concrete beam to counter the effect of water pressure and prevent part failure or/and the overall collapse of the structure.

When constructing your foundation, remember to lay/spread polythene rubber on the compacted DPC before casting the floor slab. This help to prevent water leakage. Note that the floor slab needs to be constructed in such a way that it slops water to one corner of the pond to ease discharge.
After the first three coaches of blocks, run a reinforced concrete beam round the pond before the other layers. 8,10 or 12mm of reinforcements can serve this purpose depending on the size of your proposed pond.

The plastering or rendering of between 12 - 14mm should be done with rich mortar. It's not a bad idea to add a little laterite to the aggregates. Before plastering, remember to create water overflow using 2or3mm waste pipe just before the last coach.

(2) Reinforced concrete pond- unlike the block type, reinforced concrete fish pond is more expensive but last longer with less maintenance. Any thickness between 10 & 12mm reinforcements is adequate to run the construction with wall thickness of 200-300mm.

Agriculture / Catfish Farming - Getting It Right by alfred0074u: 1:43pm On Apr 18, 2016
The basic idea of getting catfish farming right is applying the following principles-

The Pond

The pond (whether earthen, tarpaulin, plastic or concrete) is the house for the fish as such, should be kept very clean as often as possible. It should be washed with disinfectant and clean water kept inside for a period of 4 days (especially for the new concrete pond) prior to stocking.

Stocking

It is advisable not to over stock the pond for optimum growth. overstocking the pond results in stunted growth and thereby making the farming process very unsuccessful. Very importantly, it worthwhile in catfish farming to source and stock good and healthy fingerlings, post-fingerlings or juveniles. Here is where the successful farmers are distinguished from the failed ones. Care should be taken to source for fingerlings from reputable and experience farmers who are not just interested in your money, but your overall success.

Fingerlings

It's also advisable to stock fingerlings with nearly uniform sizes and growth. Though some will sure grow faster, too much disparity in d sizes of fingerlings is not recommended in d same pond as the bigger one usually feed on the smaller ones thereby reducing your overall stock without knowing.

Water Management

Water is an important feature in catfish farming. Prompt and steady source of clean water most be in place before thinking of stocking. Water should be changed, at least every 3 or 4 days throughout the production process. this enhances maximum growth and keep the fishes very healthy.

Feed Management

This is a major factor that dictates success in farming. there are imported and local fish feeds in the feed shop all over the country. it's highly advisable to apply foreign feed to fish for the first 4months and after convert to local feeds as they are much cheaper with less efficiency but still make the fish grow anyway. However, there are other options of managing feeds to cut down the huge cost of feeding; this vary from one farmers to the other based on their on the field experience.

Training/Mentorship

Getting the right knowledge is the key to a successful farming. In fact, it's importance can't be overemphasized. Every business has got it's secrets, so is fish farm business too. There are many secretes farmers can not tell you on the internet but can reveal to, or you ordinarily discover them in the course of training and mentoring. Fish farm is a multimillion business with a very high profit margin but without the right knowledge, you sure will learn the hard way. The reason why people rush into it and later run out is because of what they don't know about the business.

Market

The most interesting aspect of the business is the ready market. Market exists and ranges from hotel operators to the market women. Even farmers that export processed (dried) fish buy from fellow farmers for purpose of exporting them abroad for high currencies. You can also do the same and earn foreign exchange. Meanwhile, you can only export when you are licensed Nigerian Export Promotion Council, NEPC. So, there are plenty of options on what to do with your fish produce.

Business / Re: Stop Buying Cat Fish Foods. Cheaper Ways To Feed Ur Fish Here. by alfred0074u: 11:21am On Mar 14, 2016
@ Dashiki,

there's nothing wrong with sourcing cheaper feed to rear catfish in order to save cost; but caution must b taken in its application. junk feed should b mix with foreign feed b4 throwing dem to fishes. this reduces d cost of feeding. d overall aim of farming is to make profit. Except with high experience, otherwise, if u feed only designed fish feed, u will sure b out of business
