The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibadan zonal office, has secured the conviction of one Okoloba Emmanuel for contravening Section 419 of the Criminal Code, Cap 38, Laws of Oyo State, 2000. . . Okoloba was on Tuesday, July 9, 2019 sentenced to six months in prison by Justice Mohammed Owolabi of the Oyo State High Court in a one-count charge bordering on obtaining the sum of N350,000 (Three Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira) from one Gerhard Ludi-Kohler by false pretence. . . After an initial arraignment, the defendant sought a window for a plea bargain which led to the lone charge he was charged with on Tuesday. . . He pleaded guilty to the charge prompting the prosecution counsel, Oluwatinuwe Daramola, to pray the court to convict him accordingly. . . Justice Owolabi thence pronounced him guilty and sentenced him to six months in prison. . . The convict had earlier made restitution of N200,000 (Two Hundred Thousand Naira) only to the victim. . . Hoodlums suspected to be political thugs on Tuesday descended on leaders of the Adavi local government, Kogi State branch of the National Union of Local Government Employee/Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria. They inflicted various degrees of injuries on the leaders. The union’s billed congress aimed at discussing alleged non- payment of salary was brought to an abrupt stop. The thugs, who were reportedly armed with sticks and horse whips, inflicted injuries on some of the union leaders, including the Adavi branch NULGE chairman, Comrade Muhammed Yakubu Isah. Isah, who described the attack as very embarrassing, said the union had passed a circular to suspend the congress in line with the LG sole administrator’s (Hon. Joseph Salami) directive at the time of the attack. He stated the union has already reported the matter at the Adavi Divisional Police Headquarters. He called on those in position of authority to govern with the fear of God, saying that the union meant no harm, as they have the right to converge to discuss their welfare. In a related development, workers of Okehi local government were on Monday, chased out of their offices by attackers suspected to be political thugs. The attackers, who wielded dangerous weapons including guns, cutlasses and sticks, shot sporadically amid shouts of orders “where are those NULGE people”…“which nonsense congress in the secretariat”. Speaking on the development, the Okehi NULGE branch chairman, Comrade Yakubu Suleiman Achimogu and his MHWUN counterpart, Comrade Ohuei Emmanuel, expressed shock over the “unwarranted attack and disruption of a peaceful congress organised to brief workers who are anxious to know of issues relating to payment of their salaries”. They said some of their executives have gone into hiding as a result of threats by the attackers, to visit their individual home. In a joint statement earlier issued on 3rd July, 2019 by Kogi Central Branch Union Forum signed by the forum chairman of NULGE, NUT, NASU, MHWUN, NANNM and NUP, they thanked President Muhammadu Buhari, for granting local governments financial autonomy. They expressed appreciation to Governor Yahaya Bello for appending his approval to the NFIU directives. They called for strict adherence to the NFIU guidelines, stressing the need to henceforth accord workers’ monthly salaries and allowances top priority. The forum however advocated for 100 percent payment of their salaries and urged the Director of Local Government (DLGs) and Treasurers, not to betray the welfare of workers. Operatives of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT have uncovered 3,181 25 litre kegs laden with Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) suspected to have been vandalised from Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation’s (NNPC) pipelines at Akaraba Island. The kegs which were discovered during a raid of the island by naval operatives on July 4, were said to have been concealed in makeshift structures built about 200 metres away from Inegbe Resort. Leading reporters to the island where the kegs were handed over to the NNPC, Commander NNS BEECROFT Commodore Ibrahim Shettima said the products were valued at about N11.5 million. He said: “On Thursday, July 4, at about 4pm, patrol team deployed at Atlas Cove Island conducted raids at Akaraba area based on available intelligence. The team discovered 3,181 of 25 litres jerry cans with products suspected to be PMS valued at about N11,500,000. “It was further discovered that the products were sourced from several vandalised points on the NNPC pipeline on the Atlas Cove Island. The discovery of such large quantity of PMS is as a result of the navy’s aggressive patrols which has denied them the freedom of action. “The Nigerian Navy under the leadership of the Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS) Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas is determined to rid our waterways of all forms of criminality. The NNS BEECROFT is therefore committed to assisting NNPC and other agencies of government in dealing with the issue of pipeline vandalism and crude oil theft. “The Nigerian Navy uses this medium to warn pipeline vandals/thieves and other criminal elements, particularly in our maritime environment to desist from nefarious activities and pursue lawful means of livelihood. Otherwise, they will surely be brought to justice. “I advise well-meaning citizens of the country to dissociate from illegality and give useful information to the Nigerian Navy or other security agencies on all forms of criminalities going on in their areas. The Nigerian Navy is ever focused and would continue to hunt these criminal elements and enemies of the nation.” On the next line of action, Commodore Shettima said the navy would await the evacuation of the products by NNPC within a time frame before destroying all illegal structures on the island. He said the kegs would have been destroyed and set ablaze but for the fact that the general area had combustible materials and would not encourage burning. “We have about a thousand jerricans of the PMS here in Takwa Bay which were evacuated from Akaraba, while the ones you saw earlier are 2,181. The total is 3,181. At first, our men thought it was something they could evacuate but you have seen the difficulty of the terrain and the quantity of kegs. “We have about nine vehicles here recovered from criminals. The last time we came here, there were about four vehicles now the number has increased. “These are the kinds of challenges we face here but we are not relenting in our efforts to do away with this act of criminality. “It is expected that when we hand over, the NNPC will evacuate all the products to their choosen location because the navy has to clear the whole area of illegal structures. They will have to give me a specific date that they would have completely evacuated the products,” he said. The Nation observed that the makeshift structures were located at places were boats or canoes can alongside around the Lagos anchorage and load them with ease for onward transportation. It was also observed that the locations of the structures were same as those destroyed in 2015 and 2016 by the Nigerian Navy during operations to dislodge pipeline vandals and militants in the area. At the handing over event was Commandant NSCDC Commandant Tajudeen Balogun, representatives of NNPC pipeline maintenance contractor, OilServe Limited and private security guards working for the contractor Pentagon. The Nation reports that there was however mild drama in the island as officials of the NNPC who were to receive the recovered kegs initially refused to turn up. But with the navy’s insistence to handover the products in line with the Harmonised Standrad Operating Procedure (HSOP), the Manager Atlas Cove Terminal of the NNPC Rafiu Malik eventually came out and signed for them.
