Police operatives attached to Operation Puff Adder have between 5th June, 2019 and today, 19th June, 2019 arrested a total of Thirty-two (32) kidnap suspects including 4 involved in the kidnap of UBEC Chairman, his daughter and the killing of his driver. The Operatives also recovered Eleven (11) AK47 Rifles, Two (2) Pump Action Guns, Three (3) Locally Made Pistols, Twelve (12) Dane Guns, Two (2) Revolver Pistols, Ten (10) Live Cartridges, Seventy-seven (77) Live Ammunition and Two (2) Volkswagen vehicles.

The arrest of the four (4) suspects is sequel to the massive manhunt launched to apprehend the fleeing members of the kidnap gang involved in the kidnap of UBEC Chairman. It would be recalled that some gang members had fled following the death of their Gang Leader/Kidnap Kingpin, one Sumaila Sule a.k.a Shaho, who died on 18th May, 2019 as a result of bullet injuries sustained during a shoot-out with Police Operatives.

Akwa Ibom State High court, Ibiono Ibom division has sentenced one Utibe Ita, an indigene of Nkim village in Ibiono Ibom local government area, to life imprisonment for killing his father. The presiding judge, Justice Bassey Nkanang said Ita is to spend the rest of his life behind bars for committing manslaughter.

It was deduced from the confessional statement he made to the police that he has been having festering issues with his deceased father over some thorny family matters. The bubble burst when the deceased, Mr. Oscar Ita went missing between June 5 and 11, 2017 prompting his brother Mr Godwin Udoisang to initiate a search party.

He told court that he organised a search party to comb the surroundings and nearby bushes which yielded no fruit until he decided to search for him in the late brother’s house which he lived with the accused where he discovered something like a heap of earth. It was gathered that the accused made no efforts to escape and by the time the youths of Nkim arrested him, he attempted to run away but was too late.

From the confessional statement including autopsy report and police investigation, there was strong suspicion that the accused may have buried his father when he was not yet dead, since he confessed that he hit the late father, “and he fell down”, adding that he “rushed” to a neighbour, begged and obtained a shovel used in digging the shallow grave.
