Hi,

Could you help me with the meaning of these codes on the drivers door on my Peugeot 206? Especially the pressure required for each of the tyres. Someone told me that the 2.3 Bar means three tyres will be inflated to 30 psi while the 3.0 bar means the tyre at the back on the drivers side will be 40 Psi.

Hello sir. Sorry i'm just replying now. Been away due to illness. What this means is that when your car isn't carrying any heavy goods... All tyres should be inflated to 2.3 bar. If it's going to be loaded, then the back wheels should be inflated to 3.0 bars while the front is 2.3

Thanks I bought the paint and other materials needed today. I never knew is expensive. Spent 55k on paint and other materials needed. Meanwhile , my painter initially charged me 60 k for everything, I wonder the type of paint and material he would 've used for the job in other to make profit. He charged me 30k after seeing all the material oven bake inclusive. Meanwhile I wanna follow him to the oven to ensure he did what he said and also ensure he actually use my paint. I don't trust this hand work people. What do you think?

You should follow him if you can.

PERFORMANCE TYRES

If you drive a fast car then it is very likely that you will be using performance or summer tyres. These types of tyres are specifically designed for those who drive hard and fast. Performance tyres are designed for faster cars or for people who prefer to drive harder than the average consumer. They typically put performance and grip ahead of longevity by using a softer rubber compound. Tread block design is normally biased towards outright grip rather than the ability to pump water out of the way on a wet road. The extreme example of performance tyres are "slicks" used in motor racing, so-called because they have no tread at all.

First photo is of a slick...used in car racing.
Second photo is of a regular performance true.

ALL SEASON TYRES

These tyres are what you'll typically find on every production car that comes out of a factory. The reason for this is because these cars are going to be shipped all over the world, so there is no way to ensure that the tyres are suitable for different climates. However, with all season tyres this is not a problem because they are specifically designed to cope with many different environments.
They're designed to be a compromise between grip, performance, longevity, noise and wet-weather safety. For increased tyre life, they are made with a harder rubber compound, which sacrifices outright grip and cornering performance. For the majority of drivers, this isn't an issue. The tread block design is normally a compromise between quiet running and water dispersion - the tyre should not be too noisy in normal use but should work fairly well in downpours and on wet roads. All-season tyres are neither excellent dry-weather, nor excellent wet-weather tyres, but are, at best, a compromise.

They are basically the commonest car tyre types in use.

ALL TERRAIN TYRES

All-terrain tyres are typically used on SUVs and light trucks. They are larger tyres with stiffer sidewalls and bigger tread block patterns. The larger tread block means the tyres are very noisy on normal roads but grip loose sand and dirt very well when you take the car or truck off-road. As well as the noise, the larger tread block pattern means less tyre surface in contact with the road. The rubber compound used in these tyres is normally middle-of-the-road - neither soft nor hard.

What prompted me to write in this? A week ago, I got a call from a man who wanted to know if we had Mud Terrain Tyres. We do. What surprised me was I didn't know people knew about the different tyre types and that some people change their car tyres as the seasons change. Even though we try to teach our customers about the tyre types and what's best to use with their cars, depending on the purpose the car serves (public transportation, private use), and what terrain it is mostly used on ( mud, dust roads, tarred roads, rocky areas...etc ). Today, I'll be briefly writing on the different types of car tyres. Some are applicable to Nigeria, while others are not.

MUD TYRES

If you always go off-road, or live in wet areas with muddy terrains, then you need the right equipment. Mud tyres offer exceptional grip in even the stickiest and slipperiest of situations with their rugged design and aggressive tread. The tyres are significantly bigger and chunkier than the standard tyre that you would expect to find on a vehicle. They are specifically designed to withstand especially muddy terrains. If you live or work in an environment where the ground is like this then mud tyres are exactly what you need.
The tread on these types of tyres are a lot different to normal tyres.
At Infinity Tyres, we know that the right mud tyre is the difference between getting stuck in the mud and moving forward, and so we’ve got a wide range of mud-busters to fit any budget or vehicle.
Note: These tyres should never be used on other road surfaces other than mud.

My advice: every motorist should get his/her own digital tire pressure gauge and ensure the pressure is set to manufacturer’s recommendation. Most of those ’vulcanizers’ are destroying tires and causing accidents with their funny gauges. Checked a friend’s tires recently after he got back from a vulcanizer and the pressure was 64 psi each for the two front tires (recommended pressure was 33psi). You can imagine what would happen if he had gone for an extended high way drive...

Jeez! 64 psi!!! That's a time bomb. Yes, you're right. Motorists should own a pressure gauge.

Wheel alignment is very very important.

In fact i expect the fist point to be Wheel Balancing and Alignment.

Car Talk / How To Make Your Car Tyres Last Longer by AllAboutTyres(m): 12:01pm On Feb 10, 2018
Tyres are built to last for a couple of years. Say four to six, sometimes 9 years. But there is no fixed life span to car tyres, only recommended, safe use period. In hot climates like Nigeria, tyres will remain in good condition for about 4 years or more if used and maintained properly. With poor maintenance, a car tyre can go bad in less than a year. When tyres go bad, they pose serious danger to the lives of the drivers and other road users. Today, i'll be teaching you how to properly maintain your tyres and get the best value out of it.

Why maintenance is important

a. Why should I maintain my tyres?
- Having well-maintained tyres are highly beneficial to vehicle-users in the following ways:
1. Prolongs tyre life span
2. Lesser fuel consumption
3. Safety is maximized
4. More savings for the road user

b. How does inflation pressure affect me?
- There are 3 types of conditions that will affect your driving performance, tyre life span and your safety. The elaborations are stated below:
1) Under-inflated tyres will reduce your control over the vehicle, increase time and distance it takes for your car stop after applying brakes and tyres will wear rapidly.
2) Over-inflated tyres will reduce grip, stability in braking which may lead to poorer handling.
3) Correctly-inflated tyres will maximize safety, stability and improve vehicle handling.

i. Operating at under inflation pressure will damage the tyre in the follow ways:
1) The life of the tyre will be shortened. If there are any complaints about short life of tyres, the pressure should be checked first.
2) Abrasion will appear at the shoulders.
3) The cord will be separated from the rubber.
4) Cracks will appear on the sidewalls.
5) Fuel consumption will increase.

ii. Operating at over inflation pressure will damage the tyre in the following ways:
1. Mechanical and other issues.
2. Side-slip / Wobbling of tyre.
3. Cutting & shock bursting.
4. Rapid abrasion of tread center.

Tyre Maintenance Tips

(5 Critical Car Tyre Maintenance Tips)

1. Tyre rotation

Tyres are often moved from one position on the car to another to ensure even wear and tear. Front tyres carry more of the car's weight and tend to wear out at about twice the rate of rear tyres, so rotating the tyres can extend their life. Car manufacturers differ in their recommendations, but most manufacturers advise tyres should be rotated every 8,000 to 10,000 kms.
Ensuring your tyres are rotated regularly (usually at each service but can be more frequently) will allow them to wear evenly and maintain good tread. A front wheel drive vehicle will wear its front tyres more quickly, and a rear wheel drive vehicle will wear its rear tyres more quickly. Therefore, regular rotation can help prolong the life and condition of your tyres, resulting in greater safety on the road. You wouldn’t want to let the tyres that drive power to be bald, as this can cause loss of control.

2. Tyre pressure

Tyre pressure is of critical importance for two basic reasons. Having properly inflated tyres protects against tyre damage and reduces the possibility that the car will spin out of control. Driving with low pressure tyres also increases fuel consumption. You should check your tyre pressure at least every month, more often if you drive many kilometres and always before setting out on any long journey. Tyres should not be hot when checked, otherwise add 4 to 5 PSI to the recommended pressure. To find the correct tyre pressure for your car, check the user manual, the label on the door or inside the fuel flap. The recommended pressure is not written on the tyre itself.

3. Tyre tread depth

Tyre tread is important because it helps remove water between the tyre and road, ensuring the car remains under control and preventing the risk of aquaplaning. Tyres wear out over time, and this can be accelerated by uneven road surfaces, the tyre design itself and driving practices such as high-speed driving and hard braking. The minimum tread depth varies very slightly from state to state, but is between 1.5mm and 1.6mm. The tread depth measures the depth over the face of the tread that is in contact with the road.

4. Wheel alignment

Wheel alignment is the process of properly aligning the wheels and axles. It ensures that your car handles at its optimum level, increasing safety as well as protecting tyres against premature wear and saving fuel. Wheel balancing balances the wheel and tyres. It protects the bearings and suspension, prevents premature tyre wear and stops vibration. Out of balance wheels, and the vibration they cause, is typically most noticeable when driving at high speeds.

5. Repair and replacement

If you are in any doubt as to the roadworthiness of your tyres, you should take them to a specialist to check. (Drive into any infinity service station across the country). We will check that the internal condition of the tyre as well as the outside, comply with all proper procedures for disassembling, repairing and re-assembling, ensure compliance with all legal and manufacturers' requirements and ensure the tyre is re-fitted optimally.

However, there comes a time when tyres need to be replaced. This depends on various factors, including kilometres driven and driving style, but also climate and storage. It is essential to check your tyres on a regular basis and replace them when required, for example when they reach the minimum tread depth.

Car Talk / How Old Are Your Tyres? Check The The Birthday...lol by AllAboutTyres(m): 10:10pm On Feb 09, 2018
Tyres are just about the most important part of your car. If they're in bad shape, the car's ability to accelerate, stop, and turn in all conditions is greatly compromised. Everybody knows to replace tyres when the tread gets down to the wear bar, but what about when they get too old?

The rubber in tyres deteriorates over time due to UltraViolet and environmental exposure. The resulting "dry rot" leaves tyre structure brittle and leads to sidewall damage and eventual failure. This isn't "Oh I'll just pump it up and drive on it." No, this is complete loss of function.

As a precaution, the Department of Transportation recommends changing even new-looking tyres once they hit 10 years old, and many manufacturers recommend swapping them out at six years old. Of course, this aging is highly dependent on where the tyres 'live' or are used. Tyres in hotter climates like ours in Nigeria have much shorter lives than those in moderate, moist or cold climates, hence the the 4 year tyre expiry life span that exists in Nigeria.

Since tyres can sit in a warehouse for years before getting to the retail stores, you'll want to know when the tyres were made, rather than purchased, and there's an easy way to tell. Every tyre has a "birthday", manufacture date, molded into the sidewall and coded according to federal requirements. Near the edge of the rim, look for a long serial number starting with the letters "DOT." The code will end in four numerals and correspond to the two-digit week followed by the two-digit year. For instance, the tyre seen in the picture has a code of DOT DA08 JM1R 3011, which would indicate a tyre manufactured in the 30th week of 2011. If we follow the 4 year life span rule, it means this tyre expires by the year 2015. DOT R5HG FHR 4017 would indicate a tyre manufactured in the 40th week of 2017.

Taking into consideration the 4 year life span in use in Nigeria, it is wise to expect that some road safety officers could stop you for expired tyres if your tyres have a DOT earlier than 2013. If you find that your "new" tyres you are about to purchase are more than two years old, feel free to request a newer manufacture date or a discount from the salesman. The customer is always right, after all.

In case you were curious about other elements of the code, "DOT" means the tyre has passed the Department of Transportation's testing requirements. The next two digits are the tyre plant code, followed by a two-digit tyre size code, and then a four-digit manufacture's code. Now, your neighbors will look at you funny when they catch you staring at your tyres.

Gbam. Yes, it's a tokunbo. Thank you for the insight even though i knew all these before. My concern was that the vehicle came with R17, which i haven't heard of before.

I was advised to use 215/70R16 or 215/65/R17, but you know how the country is, no money to buy new rims. So i will continue with the R17.

Thanks Boss. Anyway, i'm surprised you haven't heard of 17, there are many cars out there running on 18, 19, 20 rims.

Mine came in 205/65R17. Why 17 rim? I was advised to use 215/70R16.

When you say it came with a 17 rim, i am inclined to assume it's a tokunbo right. I can safely assume too that the previous owner was ignorant of the correct rim size to use. Or that he changed it to a larger rim for aesthetic purposes (larger rims tend to look finer and add glamour to cars).

Now, that car naturally comes with the sizes i mentioned to you in the previous reply. But you can change your rim size, but have this in mind. When you increase a rim size from 15 to 16, or 15 to 17, you must make adjustments to the size of tyres too. Meaning you must maintain the diameter your car was built to handle. So When you move to a larger wheel diameter (such as from 16 to 17 inches), you need new tires to match. Those tires need a lower profile (or sidewall height) to maintain adequate clearance when they go over bumps and potholes, which makes the suspension fully compress and rebound. If the wheel diameter increases by one inch, the height of the tire (side wall height) should decrease accordingly to compensate, in order to keep the overall diameter the same. The side wall height is the number after the / and before the 'R' in the number code here. 205/65R17. That is '65'. Notice how it grows smaller as the rim size increases.

So since you are downgrading from 17 to 16, the car tyre height will increase. Which is why instead of 65 side wall height that came with your car, you were adviced to use 70 now that you are reducing your rim. So as the rim increases, the tyre height must reduce. If the tyre height increases, the rim should reduce.
Seing that you have used 17 rims before, you can safely downgrade to 16. So the 215/70R16 suggestion is fine.Though that car actually was built from the factory with a 15 inch wheel.

Using the picture above.

Tire Size Markings

(A) 205 = Section Width Tread (mm)
The section width is the width of the tire from one sidewall to the other measured in millimeters. In this example the tire is 205 millimeters wide. (Section width is the width of the part of the tyres that touch the surface of the ground)

(B) 55 = Aspect Ratio (Ratio of Sidewall height to width)
The aspect ratio refers to the height of the sidewall. It is a percentage of the section width. In this example, the sidewall height is 45% of the 205 section width. (The sidewall is the part of the tyre you can see when looking at the tyre from the sides)

R = Radial Construction
In this example, the R designates this tire as a radial tire. Radial tires have layers of fabric whose cords run at right angles to the circumference of the tire and whose tread is strengthened by additional layers around the circumference making it the most common type of automotive tire.

(C) 16 = Wheel Diameter/Rim Diameter (inches)
Wheel Diameter specifies the size, in inches, of the wheel that a tire fits. In this example, the tire will fit a 16 inch wheel.

(D) 91 = Load Index
Load Index indicates the maximum load carrying capacity of the tire. It is very important to only install tires with a load index that meets or exceeds your vehicle manufacturer’s specification. Most new tyres will bust after a few months due to misuse especially when constantly exceeding it's load index. Below is a load index chat, so you can easily tell the load carrying capacity in KG, that your car tyres can conviniently carry. From the chart below, we can see that a tyre with an index of 91 can conviniently carry 615kg of load.

(E) V = Speed Rating
The speed rating designates the maximum speed at which a properly installed and inflated tire can be driven on while carrying it's maximum load. In this example, the speed rating is V which means it can be driven at speeds up to 149 mph or 240km/h
