If elections were conducted in February with this judgment so the Court would have nullified that election and ordered a fresh election? |
With about three weeks to the commencement of the 2015 general elections, a Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission to immediately register the Young Democratic Party as political party. Justice Ahmed Mohammed made the order in his judgment on the suit filed by the party, challenging its denial of registration by INEC. The judge held that YDP was deemed registered when INEC failed to inform the then political association of its decision not to register it as a political party within 30 days of receiving its application, as required under Section 78 (4) of the Electoral Act, 2010. INEC was said to have received the association’s application on April 1, 2014 but only notified the applicant of its decision not to register it on September 15, 2014. The Court of Appeal in Abuja has declared President Goodluck Jonathan eligible to seek reelection in the forthcoming presidential poll. It held that as much as the President had only taken the oath of office as elected President only once in 2011, he was qualified to stand for election into the office another time. The lead judgment delivered by Justice Datijo Yahaya was unanimously consented to by four other members of the appeal panel. Justices Akomolafe Wilson, T Y Hassan, Ekanem Joseph and M Mustapha, were the other members of the panel. The judgment was in the appeal filed on April 16, 2013 by Cyracus Njoku, challenging the verdict delivered by Justice Mudashiru Oniyangi, then of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory on March 13, 2013. Njoku had filed the appeal after Justice Oniyangi dismissed his (Njoku’s) suit and held that President Jonathan was eligible to contest in 2015. Affirming the trial court’s judgment on Tuesday, the five-man panel of the appellate court, held that President Jonathan could not be said to have earlier taken the oath of office as President twice as he became President upon the death of President Umar Yar’Adua, not through election. The court held that Jonathan only took over the office of the President in 2011 by mere constitutional provisions. The court noted that in Njoku’s appeal, President Jonathan was not elected as President in 2007, and that in 2010, he did not stand for election as President, but only stood for election in that capacity in 2011. “He (Jonathan) has not been elected twice. He only completed the unexpired tenure of the late President Yaradua. His tenure started on May 29, 2011.” “The operative word is election. The Constitution says if one had been elected at two previous elections. http://www.punchng.com/news/appeal-court-affirms-jonathans-eligibility-to-re-contest/ |
Professor Dibu Ojerinde, Registrar, JAMB, is gradually making life extremely difficult for students intending to write the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) as the new order of allowing very few accreditation centers per state and now more recently, students who intend to reprint their slip would have to go back to those accredited registration centers just to reprint a single page. These new measures by the examination body would pose a huge challenge to prospective applicants and is against the ideal of the use of the Internet being a global village where online resources can be accessed from any part of the world as is the best global practice with Nigeria not an exception. JAMB must be called to order now...!!!

Reggae star, Orits Wiliki, who recently celebrated 30 years in music in Lagos, speaks with CHUX OHAI about his career, marriage and sundry issues For Orits Wiliki, playing music in the last 30 years has been a beautiful and fulfilling experience. For this reason, the reggae star deemed it fit to roll out the drums and celebrate his success on the stage last August. Wiliki gathered his co-travellers on the music train, such as Ras Kimono, Majek Fashek, King Wadada and Victor Eshiet of the Mandators, and held a concert in Lagos. It was one of the biggest gatherings of Nigeria’s depleting clan of roots rock reggae stars in a long time. Looking back at those pulsating years, the man that many music fans call ‘Koleman Revolutionary’ thinks they are worth celebrating. “The last 30 years were really exciting. They were the best part of my life, though we have had some hiccups here and there. There is no way it can be all smooth going, you know. But, by and large, I am happy that I am alive. I give God the glory,” he says, in an interview with our correspondent on Wednesday. Aware that many music fans in Nigeria still do not know much about his origin, the celebrated musician insists that his roots are firmly in Ethiopia. He says, “I am actually from Ethiopia. That is where my grandfather comes from. I don’t know why people can’t believe me. I am a full-fledged Nigerian, no doubt. I was born and raised here, but my ancestral roots remain in Ethiopia. I come from Adowa, a province in the Northern part of Ethiopia. My family naturalised as Nigerians in Warri. My father is Itsekiri, while my mother is partly Edo and Ondo. That is why I tell people that I have a complex origin. My real name is Rassam Wiliki. It was my grandfather’s name, too.” . Unveiling the secret of his 20-year marriage to popular actress and singer, Becky, he says, “I married my kid sister – my mother’s last born. We are as close siblings can be. That is why we have stayed together for this long.” Source: www.punchng.com/entertainment/e-punch/i-married-my-kid-sister-orits-wiliki/
