Grammy Award-winning Nigerian singer Burna Boy was briefly delayed by customs officials at a Moroccan airport over concerns relating to the expensive jewellery he was travelling with ahead of a major African football event. Eyes Of Lagos reports, The incident was confirmed by President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Patrice Motsepe, who disclosed the details during a press briefing. According to Motsepe, Burna Boy was stopped by customs officers after they noticed the quantity and value of the gold jewellery in his possession while en route to Rabat for the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Fan Zone concert. Motsepe explained that the situation required senior-level intervention before it was resolved peacefully, adding that the singer committed no offence and was eventually cleared to continue his journey without any legal consequences. Following the resolution, Burna Boy went on to headline the AFCON Fan Zone concert in Rabat on January 16, delivering a high-energy performance alongside Ghanaian dancehall star Stonebwoy and Moroccan artistes Stormy and Jaylann. The CAF president’s revelation sparked widespread reactions on social media, particularly on X (formerly Twitter). While some users questioned why the Afrobeats star was travelling with such valuable jewellery, others defended him, arguing that luxury accessories are a common part of the lifestyle and branding of global music stars. Several fans dismissed the criticism as unnecessary, noting that Burna Boy faced no legal action and successfully fulfilled his performance obligations at the AFCON event. Some social media users expressed shock at the display of wealth, while others described the incident as a cultural misunderstanding rather than a serious issue. A social media user, Lawrence Kitema, has triggered widespread debate online after lamenting what he described as the growing influence of money on family acceptance and relationships. In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), Kitema expressed frustration over what he sees as increasing cruelty toward poor people, claiming that financial status has become a determining factor for respect and inclusion—even among family members who are expected to offer unconditional support. Eyes Of Lagos reports, “Nowadays, you need money to become a member of your own family. This world is so cruel to the poor,” he wrote. The statement quickly went viral, drawing thousands of reactions as users shared personal experiences and reflected on how economic pressure is reshaping family bonds. Many netizens resonated with Kitema’s comment, describing situations where wealth appears to influence authority, respect, and decision-making within families. A user identified as Esperanza wrote that a person’s worth should not be defined by their financial status, stressing that poverty is a circumstance rather than a moral failing. Another commenter, JP Attueyi, noted that in some families, meetings and decisions revolve around the wealthiest member, whose absence or opinion determines the outcome of discussions. Aditi added that while the situation is not entirely new, people are now more open about attaching value to money, even in places where love and kinship should prevail. Other users approached the topic from a more pragmatic perspective, arguing that money has become a tool for survival, independence, and protection in modern society. Ken, another respondent, stated that financial stability often provides the freedom to leave unhealthy situations and confront life’s challenges, whether one likes it or not. Similarly, Praveen observed that as the cost of living continues to rise, affection and presence are increasingly measured by financial contribution rather than emotional connection. Adding humour to the conversation, PapiSpit remarked that love now seems to come with a “cover charge,” joking that being financially broke can quickly relegate one to the status of a distant relative. The ongoing discussion highlights a broader societal concern about how economic hardship and rising living costs are influencing relationships, values, and expectations within families. As reactions continue to pour in, many agree that while money may not buy love, it increasingly determines visibility, voice, and inclusion—raising questions about compassion and humanity in today’s world. https://eyesoflagos.com/2026/01/16/money-determines-family-acceptance-debate/ cc: Mynd44 , Nlfpmod , Seun

Seun Kuti, Afrobeat musician and son of the late legendary icon Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, has criticised repeated comparisons between Afrobeats star Wizkid and his father, describing such claims as disrespectful and misleading. Eyes Of Lagos reports, Speaking during a recent Instagram Live session, Seun cautioned members of Wizkid’s fanbase, popularly known as Wizkid FC, against referring to the Grammy-winning singer as a modern-day Fela. According to him, equating any contemporary artiste with the Afrobeat pioneer undermines the originality, impact, and historical significance of Fela’s legacy. Seun argued that his father’s influence went far beyond music, stressing that Fela’s art was deeply rooted in activism, resistance, and social consciousness—qualities he believes cannot be casually replicated or transferred to another artist. He expressed frustration over what he described as persistent online disrespect toward Fela, questioning why his father’s name is often dragged into debates involving modern Afrobeats stars. Seun said such comparisons stem from ignorance rather than genuine appreciation of Fela’s contributions to African music and global political discourse. The Afrobeat singer also blamed extreme fan rivalries for negatively affecting the Nigerian music industry, noting that unnecessary comparisons and online hostility have made collaborations between artistes increasingly difficult. According to Seun, fans should focus on appreciating their favourite artistes for who they are, rather than attempting to elevate them by placing them alongside cultural icons of a different era and purpose. He urged Wizkid’s supporters to celebrate the singer’s achievements on their own merit and allow Fela’s legacy to remain respected and undiluted. The comments have since sparked widespread reactions online, with many Nigerians divided over the long-running debate between Afrobeat heritage and modern Afrobeats stardom. https://eyesoflagos.com/2026/01/11/its-wrong-to-compare-wizkid-to-fela-seun-kuti-fires-back-at-fans/

Popular Lagos-based cleric and Senior Pastor of the Mountain of Liberation and Miracles Ministries, Pastor Chris Okafor, has reportedly presented himself to the police following a wave of serious allegations circulating online. Eyes Of Lagos reports, The Lagos State Police Command confirmed that Pastor Okafor turned himself in after initially failing to honour a formal police invitation. According to the Command, the invitation was issued by the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, on Sunday, with an expectation that he would appear on Monday. Speaking to TVC on Wednesday, the Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, explained that the pastor’s legal representatives had earlier informed the police of his intention to report, but he did not show up as scheduled. “When he was invited, he contacted us through his lawyer and said he would appear on Monday. We waited, but he didn’t come. I then directed that he be arrested. He later showed up the following day,” CP Jimoh stated. Further developments revealed that the matter had already been escalated beyond the state level. CP Jimoh disclosed that the case is now under the supervision of the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone 2, Sylvester Alabi. According to him, investigations into the allegations had been ongoing at the Zone 2 headquarters for several weeks before the Lagos Command confirmed it. “I verified that the same case was already opened at Zone 2. The AIG informed me that investigations have been ongoing under his command for about three weeks,” Jimoh added. The police commissioner also addressed growing concerns raised by alleged victims online, noting that social media has become an important channel for public complaints. He stressed that the police now act proactively when issues gain public attention, especially when they risk escalating into unrest. “Social media has become a veritable platform for people to lodge complaints. We don’t wait for situations to degenerate before acting in the public interest, as that could lead to a breakdown of law and order,” he said. The allegations against Pastor Okafor began surfacing in mid-December 2025, when several individuals took to social media to accuse the cleric of misconduct and other related offences. The claims quickly gained traction online, sparking widespread debate and calls for police intervention. As investigations continue, the police have assured the public that due process will be followed and that all parties involved will be given a fair hearing. https://eyesoflagos.com/2026/01/08/pastor-chris-okafor-surrenders-police-allegations/ cc: Mynd44 , Nlfpmod , Seun

Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has urged Nigerians of South-East extraction, particularly Igbos, to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general election, warning against what he described as “wasted votes.” Eyes Of Lagos reports, Kalu also renewed the President’s call for unity and reconciliation within the All Progressives Congress (APC), stressing the need for internal cohesion as the party prepares for future electoral contests. Speaking during a series of courtesy visits across Abia State, the Deputy Speaker appealed to party leaders to deepen engagement with stakeholders, strengthen party structures, and sustain reconciliation efforts nationwide. According to him, unity within the APC remains critical to consolidating governance and ensuring electoral success in 2027. He urged party members to put aside internal differences and work collectively to advance the party’s agenda, particularly in the South-East. Hon. Kalu made the call on Monday while touring Abia North, Abia Central, and Abia South senatorial zones as part of efforts to reinforce party unity. In Abia North, he paid a courtesy visit to former Abia State Governor and ex-Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu. At Abia Central, the Deputy Speaker met with Senator John Bob Nwannunu, while in Abia South, he visited APC stalwart and former Hallmark Bank Managing Director, Sir Mac Wabara. During the engagements, Kalu reportedly emphasized that supporting President Tinubu in 2027 would better position the South-East within national politics, urging Igbos to align with the ruling party rather than remain politically isolated. He reiterated that reconciliation and inclusion remain key pillars of Tinubu’s leadership within the APC. https://eyesoflagos.com/2026/01/06/vote-for-tinubu-2027-deputy-speaker-tells-igbos/ cc: Mynd44 , Nlfpmod , Seun
