[21:52, 1/21/2019] +234 803 298 2570: Part 4 MAJOR CAUSES OF DEATH IN PIGLETS AND HOW TO AVOID THEM The highest point of mortality in a pig farm mostly occur in the farrowing area, that is, where the piglets are. Some of the major causes are these: • Chilling: This is due to cold. It can be prevented by providing insulators like wood shavings and lamps • Crushing: This happens when the mother lies on its piglet, it crushes it to death. If the piglets are many and there’s no farrowing crates, piglets should be taken out and kept in a warm place. Another method will be to foster them to a sow who has less. Most cases of crushing though are related to chilling. The piglet comes to their mother to get warm if it’s too cold and get under her, gets crushed…the rest is history. Keeping their room warm cannot be overemphasized • Diarrhoea: This can be caused by many things. The chief among them being hygiene. Piglet’s room should be kept clean and dry. Bacteria grows in damp and warm places so wood shavings should be turnover every day to keep them well aired. Other causes will be change in the sow’s diet, when the piglets start picking up feed, bacterial infections etc. This should be treated immediately with anti-diarrhoea drugs. This varies from brand to brand hence different prescriptions/usage. If this doesn’t stop 2 days after usage, antibiotics are prescribed for the sow and piglets. • Other causes can be when the mother steps on the piglets, wounds and injuries, etc. When piglets are injured, the sites of injury should be cleaned out with antiseptic and sprayed with wound spray or GV [21:52, 1/21/2019] +234 803 298 2570: Part 3 After these season, guess what we have? A litter of newly born piglets!! Colour can vary from pink, to brown, cream etc. It all depends on the breeds of animal mated. So congratulations, your account has just been credited! To make sure it stays like that, we should know the following about that bundle of cash. • A piglet’s first need is warmth. This can be provided by insulating the floor with wood shavings, providing lamps etc. When using lamps or other means of warmth, care should be taken to avoid the piglets being too hot. • The next care is to check if the mother is lactating. This can be done by rubbing the gilt/sow’s teat and gently imitating suckling by juggling the teat. Some sows seem to lactate more than some so it is important to know that milk secretion increases as the days goes by. If the sow isn’t lactating, it should be administered 3ml of Oxytocin and can be repeated after 3 hours. Kindly note, it is important that piglets suckle after they have been born. The mother at this point produces colostrum for about 72 hours that help builds up immunity in the piglets and this helps them all through their lifetime. In case of agalactia that is, if the sow/gilt isn’t producing milk, piglets can be given special formulation of colostrum. • The next thing is for piglets to be given Iron injection of 2ml on the 2nd or 3rd day. The reason for the disparity is because piglet can react to Iron injection if they have low level of Vitamin E. So farrowing area must be airy and have sufficient sunlight. Small litters should be given 1.5ml to avoid iron toxicity. • Piglets are born with 8 sharp teeth, this should be cut off to avoid them hurting their mother’s teat and bullying one another. This can be injurious to farm attendants as well. It is important that this should be done on the 4th day. This day is preferable because pain from teeth clipping can make piglets not to suckle as much as they should, since we want them to take enough colostrum. • Piglets should be watched for diarrhoea. Diarrhoea varies from cream, yellow like pasty excreta. Piglets should be given an anti-diarrhoea formulation immediately because this can lead to death. It’s important that most formulation contain electrolyte so piglets must suckle very well to recover fast. • The earlier piglets are introduced to creep feed, the better. This helps train them how to eat quickly. Kindly remember that pig business is a weigh business so if you can improve your animal feed conversion rate, you should. Creep feed can be introduced at 2 weeks. Rations balanced in Protein and Energy are well processed at this stage. • All male piglets to be sold off for meat are better castrated. This makes them to be properly managed and also remove the boar taint which some of our customers might not like. Castration is best done at 2-3 weeks. The tools needed are: Disinfectant, Blades, Hand gloves, Iodine, Spirit, Wound cure and a bowl. Kindly note, this is a mini surgery and must be done with all respect. Castration area must be clean to avoid contaminatio… [21:53, 1/21/2019] +234 803 298 2570: Part 1What’s a piglet? A piglet is the young one of a pig It is important to know that it is of high necessity to have good quality breeder animals. Most of the genes are passed from the boar so a good boar can improve the herd on our farms. Breeds of pigs that are presently available in Nigeria are Largewhite, Landrace, Duroc, mixed breeds, Local breeds (most of them has been watered down from the original local breeds because of the different cross breeding practices that has been practised over time) Having said the above, it’s important to take note that a gilt/Sow is pregnant for 114 days so we have enough time to take care of it and prepare for the piglets A piglet doesn’t become one on the day it is born, it has passed through a period of growth in the sow/gilt’s womb so it is important to know the care the gilt/sow requires during this period of gestation. During gestation, the gilt/sow should be fed feed balanced in protein and energy in the first 10 days after mating and should be fed feed rich in fibre after 10 days so to make sure piglets are not too big to pass through the birth canal. Kindly note, that a house is as strong as its weakest point, that means our farms are strong as our piglets. [21:53, 1/21/2019] +234 803 298 2570: Part 2 So a sow/gilt should be prepared for birth by doing the following: • It should be fed high protein and energy feed 10 days before mating and 10 days after mating. This is sometimes called flushing. It helps the gilt/sow produce higher number of eggs. It helps after mating in forming the piglet • It should be taken to the boar to be mated during its heat season especially during the second stage of its heat. This stage is characterised by: less redness of the vulva, some secretion on the vulva, the animal grunts more, makes mating sounds, allow its back to be pressed (that is, imitating a boar climbing her) and if her boar is close, she won’t be mounting the walls, she will keep her body as if she wants to crossed. • After mating, it should be handled with care. It shouldn’t be subjected to any form of bullying, starvation etc. because it is during this time that the eggs and sperm are just forming the piglet. This is a critical time in piglet formation and we should take care of this more. • It should be taken to the farrowing room when it’s about 3 weeks to delivery time or at least 7 days to farrowing time. Over excitement, stress can prolong farrowing time, cause lack of milk secretion and make a sow/gilt eat her piglets • It should be cleaned up some few days before farrowing by thoroughly washed and disinfected. Teats and vulva should be cleaned to avoid risk of contamination. Rooms should be kept dry and insulated with wood shavings. • During farrowing, animals should be left alone to do this on their own with an eye on them. They could be helped if farrowing time is prolonged by administering Oxytocin when it is still labour and the last time it gave birth to the previous piglet is over 30 minutes. [21:54, 1/21/2019] +234 803 298 2570: Part 5 SOME FIRST AID FORMULATIONS FOR PIGLETS. When sows are not letting down milk, unripe pawpaw can be given to the sow, some can be rubbed on the sows’ teat as well to help her let down milk. Creep feed can be provided using the following items: 1egg, some powder milk, Glucose, Tetracycline, Flagyl, ORS and you mix with clean warm water. This shouldn’t be prepared too thick. Breastmilk is not too thick and it should be imitated. This can only be used for 24hrs, If it isn’t finished, it can be mixed with the sow’s food. Anti-diarrhoea formulation: The items that can be used are: Flagyl, ORS, Tetracycline. This should be mixed with pure water and given twice to the piglets. It can only be used for 24hrs, after then it has to be disposed [21:54, 1/21/2019] +234 803 298 2570: Part 8 WHEN TO WEAN? Our piglets are about to graduate to another class now. The question asked is, when is the right time for this? Different books suggest different times, the most important tip to know about weaning is that, piglets must have been able to feed itself that is, can now pick up food. Another thing to consider would be if the piglet is properly developed and has a good weaning weight that is above 7kg in mixed breeds and between 10-15kg in pure line breeds Kindly note, that the way an animal converts its food, fight diseases, develop high immunity is heavily influenced by the care and management administered to the animal at the piglet and weaner’s stage. The first 12 weeks are the most important. Though disparities can occur in a litter due to various factors chief among them is in the initial birthweight. Piglets with low birth weight can be kept with their mother longer. For example, we can wean the bigger ones at 6 weeks and wean the smaller ones at 8 weeks. Standard weaning time is between 6-8 weeks. Piglets about to be weaned should be dewormed and given multivitamins in order to make them eat. Weaning is a full topic on its own. [21:54, 1/21/2019] +234 803 298 2570: Part 6 TOOLS/MEDICATION NEEDED IN PIGLET CARE Just like a pregnant woman will prepare for the birth of her child by getting some things ready for, it is essential that stockmen and attendant should have these things on their farm: Wood shavings, Towel, Oxytocin, Iron Injection, Needle and Syringe, Teeth Clipper, Anti diarrhoea medication, Iodine, Wound spray, cotton wool, hand gloves etc. We should remember to take note of the peculiarities of our farms, some farm doors are too wide that piglets can come out of them, some drainage holes are too big and as to be blocked etc. [21:54, 1/21/2019] +234 803 298 2570: Part 7 FEED FORMULATION FOR PIGLETS. I believe the best formulation for piglet’s creep are the ones that are already compounded by standard companies. It is a known fact that most of them don’t compromise their formulation. Since the bowels of the piglets are still sensitive, this is best for them. Piglets don’t consume much. At 2 weeks they should consume about 200gms per piglets per day. This will increase as the days goes by. But at weaning, a piglet should have been able to consume about 400gms to 600gms. The ration then should be switched to a weaner’s ration gradually so as not to offset the bowels. It is important to do some calculation around this period, know what is the market price for the piglets you are raising, know how much their mother consume per day, calculate the cost of creep feed to check if you are running this venture profitably. Now, for some of us that getting already formulated feed might be an issue, we can try some of these formulation bearing in mind the requirement of a piglet is high energy, high protein and low fibre. Feed given to piglets must be easy to digest, palatable and served in minute quantities over time. My personal favourite is Sweet Potatoes, fish meal or blood meal. This has to be boiled. Piglets can eat this boiled potatoes with the peels. It just must be very soft so depending on what’s cheaper in your area, cocoyam is a close substitute. We introduce this to them at 2 weeks and they respond favourably to it. The ratio being 4:1 We switch to a formulation at about 4 to 5 weeks. Soya, Maize, PKC, Wheat offal, Bone meal, Cassava shafts, Premix, Lysine, Salt, Toxin binder etc. |

This is Dashiki. Purely Nigerian fashion. You cannot buy it in hundreds in Nigeria. I was at the airport last time travelling out of Nigeria. I saw a women with bootload of it. She was fighting with the customs. The customs said she cannot ship imported goods out of Nigeria. That is actually the law in Nigeria. Anyway, she needed to bribe someone. The problem is the Dashiki came from China. You can buy a million Dashikis in China if you like. Why in God's name must Nigerians buy Dashiki from China and export it back to Europe in small quantities to sell to the Nigerians there? Nobody find anything wrong about this. We need to start selling Dashiki to the world. It is our own and not Chinese. I am not happy with the way things are in Nigeria and I believe a lot can be done. I don't believe Nigerians all over the world cannot afford even N370 each to support a cause to put an ad in the National newspaper. The day I believe that you know I have gone mad. People need to understand that when you expect someone to do big things for you, you have to be willing to do small things. yourself. If we want politicians to bring N100 million to the table, that is big money. So you should be willing to bring even N370. I know Nigerians can afford it but they are unwilling to do it. So I shouldn't continue like a mad man everyday burning energy? It would be stupid of me to continue in this without the support of the people to push the basic agenda forward. Albert Einstein said doing one thing over and over again expecting different result is stupidity. I have done enough now. It's now your turn then I do again. There is enough talk. I have made over 100 videos. that requires energy, money and time. If these videos are not enough to get 1000 people to collect $5 each then I have done a bad job or I have the wrong audience. In either way, there are enough work of mine out there for people to see until they catch up. The day people are ready to do the work they will know where to find me https://www.facebook.com/AromsAigbehi/?hc_ref=ARRFuBoSI39ioPVcFR_PhXx_Ue5ZByQYE9Cr2wY7G4EGEodUifE9UZ6P7e2fZGJi23o&pnref=story |

The pig is one of the oldest domesticated animals • Majority of the breeds we now know are descended from the Eurasian Wild Boar (Sus scrofa). • Archaeological evidence from the Middle East indicates domestication of the pig occurs as early as 9,000 years ago • while most livestock where utilized initially by nomadic peoples, swine are more indicative of a settled farming community • Pigs have become vital to the economy in parts of the world Problems and Prospects of pig production in Nigeria ✓ Production or management problems: low average productivity The problems of mgt are linked with those of production and these includes: a. nutrition b. labour c. capital d. Disease control e. breeding and f. marking • Low literacy level • Rejection of technical assistance • Housing condition- moist, no waste disposal, inadequate ventilation and drainage, under-utilization of space, overcrowding, foreign designs. • No attention to breeding programme ✓ Record keeping- scanty records, very few farms have record on input, such as (i) feed, (ii) drugs or (iii) accurate record of stock that is slaughtered or sold. ▪ No critical analysis of the economic performance of the operation ✓ Problems of feeding : ▪ most problematic ▪ Genetic potential must be express through adequate nutrition ▪ Inadequacy in quality and quantity of feed ▪ <5% of feed in Nigeria is for Pig production, adaptation of poultry feed for pigs ▪ Inadequate provision of water. Volume given determines feed efficieny. ▪ There is very low effort in the use of agro-industrial byproducts ▪ Low production of key ingredients needed for pig feed- <=10% maize in production, <10% GNC and Fishmeal. ▪ Requiring urgent need for alternative feedstuff for feed: e.g Cassava, sweat potato, molasses, blood meal, offal meal; and also cocoa husk, pineaple waste, plantain peels, rice husk, yam peel e.t.c. ▪ Procesing with or without chemical can improve by-product and crop residues ▪ Creed feeding and flushing of gilt and sow are not practiced |
