Nairaland GeneralGroup Decry False Claims Against Customs CG, IBD Dende by Amara246(op): 6:33pm On Jan 15, 2025
• Accuse Fisayo Soyombo of Peddling Bias Using Faceless Blogs
• Says Legal Action Against Defamation Continues Unabated

Accountability Hub, a civic advocacy group promoting responsible governance and ethical journalism, has condemned ongoing attempts to malign the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Mr. Adewale Adeniyi, and Alhaji Ibrahim Dende Egungbohun (IBD Dende).

In a statement signed by Comrade Prince Effiong and released to newsmen on Monday, the group accused journalist Fisayo Soyombo of leveraging obscure blogs to perpetuate falsehoods after a court order restrained him from publishing defamatory content. They also called out Akelicious.net for repeatedly disseminating unverified and malicious reports against targeted public officials.

The statement responded to a recent article titled “Fisayo Soyombo Exposes Alleged Corruption in Customs Boss’ Appointment”, describing it as a continuation of a pattern of bias-driven narratives designed to mislead the public. The publication, attributed to a nameless author writing “from Abeokuta,” was cited as evidence of poor journalistic standards and a deliberate avoidance of accountability.

It read; “Credible journalism demands truth, accountability, and fairness,”.Akelicious.net has consistently acted as a tool for spreading unsubstantiated claims, much like Mr. Soyombo’s earlier work, which the courts have found defamatory. This is not journalism; it is character assassination disguised as investigative reporting.”

"May we emphasize that the claims linking IBD Dende to CG Adewale’s appointment are without basis, Dende is neither a customs officer nor in any position of influence over federal appointments. May we also clarify that the persistent misrepresentation of a viral video involving IBD Dende, has been falsely interpreted to suggest undue influence."

The group however, praised CG Adewale’s achievements since assuming office, including technological advancements, improved border management, and enhanced professional standards, urging the public to judge leadership based on performance, not unfounded rumors.

“The focus should be on CG Adewale’s reforms, which have improved customs operations and national revenue generation, not on baseless personal attacks. Any attempt to link his appointment to external influence lacks factual support,” the statement asserted.

Reiterating the importance of professional ethics in journalism, Accountability Hub expressed disappointment at the disregard for truth and fairness exhibited by both Fisayo Soyombo and Akelicious.net. It warned of the dangers of manipulating public perception through irresponsible reporting.

“Journalism is a noble profession rooted in truth, accuracy, and objectivity. We call on all media practitioners to uphold these principles and desist from being instruments of disinformation. Nigerians deserve better than biased narratives fueled by hidden agendas,” Comrade Effiong added.

Finally, the statement reaffirmed IBD Dende’s commitment to seeking justice through legal means, dismissing claims that he intends to withdraw his defamation case. It called on Nigerians to remain vigilant and reject propaganda aimed at discrediting reform-minded public servants.

Nairaland GeneralFCAIB: Group Demands Due Process In Leadership Transitions by Amara246(op): 8:10am On Dec 31, 2024
• Calls for Adherence to Civil Service Rules
• Warns Against Disruption of College Activities

A foremost right group, identified as the Civil Society Groups for Good Governance CSGGG, has called on the Federal Government to ensure strict adherence to due processes and civil service rules in the appointment of an Acting Provost for the Federal College of Agriculture, Ibadan.

This appeal follows the imminent conclusion of the tenure of the current Provost, Dr. Mrs. Elizabeth Oluwakemi Augustus on December 31, 2024.

In a letter dated December 30, 2024, and signed by the President, Comrade Ogakwu Dominic, the group expressed concern over reports that the process might deviate from already established procedures.

The letter, addressed to the Honourable Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, also called for the attention of the Honourable Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, the Head of Service of the Federation, and the Executive Secretary of the Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria.

The group specifically highlighting Section 020806 of the Civil Service Rules, which stipulates that acting appointments must be based on seniority and qualifications, warned that any deviation from this principle could set a dangerous precedent, undermining the credibility of the appointment process and causing unrest within the institution.

It further opined that failure to adhere to principles of fairness, equity, and merit, unions affiliated with the College including the Academic Staff Union, Senior Staff Union, and Non-Academic Staff Union, have expressed readiness to embark on industrial action with immediate effect.

It read; "We are troubled by reports suggesting that a candidate other than the most senior officer is being considered for this appointment, such a move not only undermines the provisions of the Civil Service Rules but also risks disrupting the College’s daily operations."

“Section 2, Rule 4 (1)(a) of the Public Service Rules calls for strict adherence to due process in public sector appointments, including transitions in leadership. We urge the Minister of Agriculture and other stakeholders to take decisive action to uphold transparency and equity.”

“We trust in your commitment to justice and transparency and urge you to address this pressing issue swiftly.” it added.

Underscoring the broader implications of the issue, the group noted that fair and transparent leadership transitions are essential to maintaining staff morale, institutional stability, and public trust in governance processes.

They however reiterated their readiness to engage further with relevant authorities to ensure a resolution that aligns with established rules and standards.

Nairaland GeneralUBEC: Group Call For Competence And Institutional Integrity by Amara246(op): 11:00pm On Dec 23, 2024
....Urges Tinubu to Reverse Aisha Garba’s UBEC Appointment

The Centre for Civil Relations, Open Dialogue and Development (CCODED) has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to rescind the appointment of Ms. Aisha Garba as the Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), citing concerns over competence and institutional integrity.

Speaking at a press briefing yesterday in Abuja, CCODED's
executive director, Amb. Austin Inaede, emphasised UBEC’s critical role in shaping Nigeria’s educational foundation.

He expressed concerns that the appointment of Ms. Garba might undermine the commission's mandate.

“UBEC was established under the Universal Basic Education (UBE) Act of 2004 to address Nigeria’s chronic educational challenges and ensure free, compulsory, and universal basic education for all children. Its leadership must reflect academic excellence, professional expertise, and a thorough understanding of Nigeria’s unique educational challenges,” he stated.

He noted that the commission has traditionally been led by individuals with advanced qualifications in education or related fields, which are necessary to effectively tackle systemic issues within the education sector.

“While Ms. Garba’s international development background is commendable, her appointment does not align with the level of experience and expertise required to lead UBEC successfully,” he said.

Amb. Inaede warned that the appointment could jeopardize UBEC’s effectiveness, politicize its operations, and erode public confidence in governance.

He stressed the importance of insulating UBEC’s leadership from political considerations to preserve its independence and efficiency.

The group also expressed concerns about the broader implications of the appointment, noting that weak leadership at UBEC could derail Nigeria’s progress toward achieving Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4), which focuses on inclusive and equitable quality education.

Furthermore, he said it could harm partnerships with international organizations and donors, who expect leaders with strong qualifications and local expertise.

Amb. Inaede urged President Tinubu to reverse the appointment and instead nominate a candidate with the necessary academic credentials, local experience, and strategic vision to steer UBEC’s mandate effectively.

He also called for the adoption of transparent criteria for future appointments to key public institutions.

“This is not an attack on Ms. Garba or the President but a plea to protect UBEC's integrity and secure the future of Nigeria’s education system. Leadership at UBEC is too critical to be entrusted to individuals without the requisite qualifications and experience,” he added.

The CCODED reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with the government to reform Nigeria’s education system and urged President Tinubu to realign appointments with the principles of merit, competence, and institutional integrity.

Nairaland GeneralNDYPC, Others Petition Authorities Over Alleged Cyberstalking Of Prominent Niger by Amara246(op): 8:17am On Dec 16, 2024
... Niger Delta Figures

Warn of cultural erosion, political instability, and threats to national unity

The Niger Delta Youth for Positive Change has formally petitioned key security agencies, including the Office of the National Security Advisor (NSA), the Inspector General of Police (IGP), and the Department of State Security (DSS), to investigate and prosecute one Mr. Jude Gbaboyor for alleged acts of cyberstalking and bullying.

In a detailed petition dated December 12, 2024, signed by Comrade Yibalua Yibakeni Elliot and jointly endorse by Ex-Gen Momoh Wilberforce, coordinator Niger Delta Ex-Agitators for Good Governance, Comrade Simon Ogbe, coordinator Niger Delta Transparency Watch Group, Comrade Ebi Rawlings, coordinator of Ijaw Community Abuja Northern Nigeria, Comrade Akassah Kelvin of Niger Delta Watchdog, and Comrade Lucky Dibia, coordinator of the Niger Delta Youth Movement (NDYM) Abuja Chapter, NDYPC accused Mr. Gbaboyor of engaging in targeted online harassment against prominent Niger Delta figures, including Dr. Dennis Otuaro, High Chief Government Ekpomupolo, and the Gbaramatu Kingdom. They expressed grave concern over what they described as “psychological damage and societal harm” caused by the alleged cyber campaigns and bullying.

Citing the Nigerian Cybercrime Act of 2015, NDYPC emphasized that cyberstalking constitutes a serious offense under Section 24(2), which prescribes a penalty of up to 10 years imprisonment or a minimum fine of N25 million for transmitting communications intended to threaten, harass, or bully. The act further defines cyberstalking under Section 58 as conduct that instills fear in a reasonable person.

They warned that the targeted harassment of respected figures such as High Chief Government Ekpomupolo is an affront to the cultural heritage and dignity of the Niger Delta region, while stating that such actions threaten to erode the deep-rooted traditions of respect for community leaders and symbols of authority.

“Our culture values respect and unity, and any actions that demean our leaders or communities undermine the very fabric of our identity. Allowing this behavior to continue unchecked risks setting a dangerous precedent where the sacredness of our cultural heritage is devalued.”

On the political front, the NDYPC highlighted the broader implications of inaction on cases of cyberbullying and cyberstalking. The group cautioned that failing to hold offenders accountable could embolden individuals to use digital platforms for divisive and destructive purposes, which could strain national unity and peace.

“Cyberbullying of this magnitude is not just an attack on individuals, it is a direct challenge to the values of justice, accountability, and equity that our democracy is built upon.”

NDYPC emphasized that cyber harassment of high-profile figures like Dr. Otuaro and Chief Ekpomupolo risks creating a climate of fear and hostility, which could derail meaningful dialogue and partnerships between the region and the federal government.

The group further linked the issue to the broader aspirations of the presidency to build a united and prosperous Nigeria while arguing that acts of cyber harassment, if left unchecked, could undermine the president’s efforts to foster peace, development, and inclusivity across all regions.

“This administration has committed to building a better future for all Nigerians, one rooted in respect, justice, and shared prosperity,” the petition stated. “Allowing such divisive and harmful behavior to persist undermines the president’s vision and betrays the trust placed in the government by citizens of the Niger Delta and beyond,” it added.

The group, reiterating its demand for the arrest and prosecution of Mr. Jude Gbaboyor, urged security agencies to thoroughly investigate the allegations and ensure that justice is served.

"We are calling on relevant security agencies to act decisively, not only to protect the immediate victims but also to send a strong message that the government will not tolerate actions that threaten national unity, cultural integrity, or the collective aspirations of Nigerians. We cannot allow this type of online abuse to go unpunished. Cyberstalking is not just a crime against the victims but a threat to societal harmony. Addressing this issue decisively will affirm Nigeria’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and protecting the rights and dignity of every citizen,” they concluded.

Nairaland GeneralGroup Demand Accountability Over Alleged Irregular Appointment Of Ag AGF by Amara246(op): 6:27pm On Dec 13, 2024
A coalition of advocacy organizations, Concerned Citizens of Nigeria (CCN) and Support for Credible Leadership Initiative (SCLI), has raised alarm over what it describes as an illegal and self-serving move by unnamed powerful individuals in the presidency.

The coalition in a press conference held in Abuja on Friday, decried the recent appointment of Shamseldeen Babatunde Ogunjimi as the Acting Accountant General of the Federation (AGF), alleging gross violations of due process and civil service rules.

Addressing members of the press, diplomats, and citizens, Nwodo Chidiebere, Esq., speaking on behalf of the groups, accused certain individuals of orchestrating the premature removal of the incumbent AGF, Dr. Oluwatoyin Sakirat Madein, whose tenure is not due to end until March 2025. According to the groups, this move undermines President Bola Tinubu’s ongoing efforts to reform Nigeria’s financial system and address systemic corruption.

The groups claim that the appointment of Mr. Ogunjimi is riddled with falsehoods and deliberate distortions contrary to the statement by Presidential Spokesman Bayo Onanuga that Ogunjimi is the most senior director in the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (OAGF), the groups provided documentary evidence indicating that his last official posting was to the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs as a director.

“This raises serious questions about how he suddenly became the ‘Director of Funds’ in the OAGF,” Chidiebere said, challenging the presidency and Mr. Ogunjimi to provide proof of any circular or memo validating his eligibility for the position the coalition further alleged that the appointment is a ploy by powerful figures within the presidency to install a pliable AGF who would advance their private interests at the expense of national accountability.

“Civil service guidelines stipulate that in the absence of an AGF, the most senior director within the OAGF should take over in an acting capacity. By this standard, the rightful successor would be either Danladi Comfort Zakowi, the Director of Finance, or Luka Joshua, the Director of the Consolidated Accounts Department, pending a formal examination to select a substantive AGF.”

The groups criticized the presidency’s disregard for these rules, noting that the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs. Didi Esther Watson-Jack, was bypassed in the decision-making process and only informed of Ogunjimi’s appointment via WhatsApp after it was announced.

“This blatant violation of procedures is not just an affront to civil service ethics but also a threat to the integrity of President Tinubu’s financial reforms,” Chidiebere asserted.

The controversy has already caused disruptions in government operations. The coalition noted that no Accountant General attended Thursday’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, a statutory requirement. Similarly, the Federation Accounts Allocation Committee (FAAC) meeting scheduled for today risks being marred by the absence of a legitimate AGF, potentially stalling critical financial decisions.

The groups have called on President Tinubu to intervene and ensure that the appointment process adheres to established civil service regulations. They urged the president to uphold transparency and accountability by reinstating Dr. Madein or appointing an acting AGF through the proper channels.

“Our country cannot continue to operate like a banana republic where anything goes,” Chidiebere said. “We implore Mr. President to rein in these self-serving elements and restore order to our financial management system.

According to the group, the controversy comes at a sensitive time for President Tinubu, who has emphasized fiscal discipline and governance reforms as key pillars of his administration. The appointment scandal, if left unresolved, risks undermining public confidence in his commitment to these principles.

As the nation awaits the presidency’s response, the press conference has added fuel to a growing debate about the need for transparency and adherence to the rule of law in Nigeria’s public service appointments.

Nairaland GeneralLakurawa Terrorists' Threat Amid Information Mismanagement by Amara246(op): 10:39am On Nov 30, 2024
By Mukhtar Ya’u Madobi

The emergence of the "Lakurawa" terror group in Northwestern Nigeria has added a new layer to the country’s complex security challenges, as these militants strengthen their foothold across communities in Kebbi and Sokoto states.

The recent disclosure by the Defence and Force Headquarters, which "formally" recognized Lakurawa as a terror organization, not only introduced the group to many Nigerians but also highlighted the potential dangers of mishandling information about such threats.

It is against this background that the Center for Crisis Communication (CCC) tasked the security agencies to handle the issue of Lakurawa with utmost caution and professionalism while at the same time, urged the media and public to avoid sensationalizing the matter.

The Chairman of the center, Major General Chris Olukolade (rtd), in a statement issued after CCC’s monthly meeting, Olukolade said the situation required swift and strategic action to prevent an escalation into a nationwide crisis with severe implications

Meanwhile, until now, Lakurawa had operated largely unnoticed, yet their growing influence signals a troubling shift in Nigeria’s already embattled security landscape. Reports trace the Lakurawa group's origins back to October 2018, when they reportedly settled in the forests around Tangaza and Gudu Local Government Areas in Sokoto State.

When locals first raised concerns about their incursion, police investigations categorized them as armed but non-threatening seasonal herders seeking food and water for their livestock. This early dismissal allowed the group to operate under the radar, gradually embedding themselves within local communities.

The manner in which security agencies, media outlets, and social platforms have handled information on this new terror group highlights a significant issue that needs critical analysis. Sensationalized coverage is indeed giving the Lakurawa group visibility, emboldening them to further terrorize their host communities.

Once considered mere herders, the Lakurawa group has escalated its activities, imposing taxes, preaching extremist ideologies, and assuming roles usually reserved for traditional rulers, such as mediation and arbitration..Surprisingly, within just days after the Nigerian military officially labeled them as terrorists, the Lakurawa sect initiated violent attacks in Kebbi State.

On Friday, November 8th, the group reportedly killed 15 people and rustled over 100 cows in Mera town, Augie Local Government Area of Kebbi State. According to Alhaji Bashir Isah Mera, a resident, “Initially, they didn’t kill; they only confiscated cows and asked owners to pay ‘Zakat’. This is their first attack in which they killed 15 people in our town.”

Was it merely a coincidence that the group became more violent soon after achieving widespread media coverage? It is possible they are using this newfound visibility to instill fear in communities and signal their presence as players in Nigeria's complex security challenges. As they gain recognition, their actions and influence appear to intensify.

Reports reveal that their first significant attack was on a military base in Sokoto, where they killed three soldiers and set a patrol vehicle ablaze. Initially, their targets were government forces, vigilantes, and rival armed groups (i.e., bandits), but recent developments indicate that unarmed civilians are also now victims of their atrocities. It is hard to believe that the Lakurawa group once received invitations from local authorities, including the District Heads of Balle in Gudu LGA and Gongono in Tangaza LGA, both in Sokoto, to protect their communities against other bandits.

This connection suggests that some local leaders may have inadvertently enabled the group’s rise by legitimizing its presence. These complex dynamics underline the challenges in Nigeria's security landscape, where communities, desperate for protection, sometimes turn to dangerous actors in the absence of adequate state intervention.

In today’s interconnected world, fueled by rapid information sharing, the way media reports on terror groups critically shapes the public's perception and response. Sensationalized coverage of groups like Lakurawa inadvertently provides them with the visibility they seek, potentially encouraging further attacks. Publicizing details about the group’s activities can become an "oxygen of publicity" that these terrorists use to maintain a fearsome reputation.

A paradigm shift is necessary. Security agencies must recognize the importance of handling sensitive information with discretion. Rather than publicly announcing the existence of groups like Lakurawa, there should be a careful, strategic approach to limit their exposure. If handled quietly and without fanfare, it may prevent these groups from gaining the visibility they currently enjoy.

For the sake of national interest and security, some information is best kept confidential to protect citizens and prevent unnecessary panic or sensationalism. Publicizing every detail can inadvertently play into the hands of criminals who capitalize on fear and citizens’ low morale to perpetrate further violence. Moving forward, Nigeria’s security agencies should develop robust crisis communication strategies.

Such strategies should aim to balance transparency with responsibility, sharing information only when necessary and in ways that do not strengthen criminal elements. By avoiding public fanfare, security agencies can effectively carry out their constitutional duties without giving terrorists an undue advantage.

Furthermore, Nigeria’s media, along with its security forces, must adopt a more thoughtful and measured approach to crisis communication. This approach will prevent terrorist groups like the Lakurawas from gaining power and notoriety, ultimately fostering a safer environment for Nigerian citizens.

The Department of State Services (DSS), Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA), National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Police, and other security institutions must work collaboratively with the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) to address emerging threats to Nigeria’s security.

The sooner this crisis is nipped in the bud, the better. As they say, a stitch in time saves nine!

Nairaland GeneralTension As Suspected Political Thugs  Disrupt Abeokuta North LG Legislative by Amara246(op): 10:45pm On Nov 28, 2024
.....proceedings

Grassroots democracy suffered a significant setback on Thursday as suspected political thugs disrupted the inaugural session of the legislative arm of the Abeokuta North Local Government.

It was gathered that temper flared among some leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in  the local government over the election of principal officers for the local government's legislative house.

Some councillors, it was gathered, were being primed by certain party leaders to occupy the four principal leadership positions in the local government's legislative house, and when the plan failed, a fiasco broke out leading to the disruption of legislative business.

The maze - the symbol of authority of the house - was reportedly taken away by unknown person.

Sources said the ambitious councillors and their supporters were responsible for the breakdown of law and order at the chamber of the legislature.

A councilor in the local government, who volunteered information on the likely cause of the problem, said on condition of anonymity that the issues of conflicts among various stakeholders had been ironed out prior to the day of the inauguration of the house.

While not forthcoming on what the issues were, the councillor said, "It is quite unfortunate that despite the fact that a number of issues had been agreed on before the inauguration, the political actors decided to act differently."

Another councillor expressed sadness that what happened on Thursday ought not to have happened if the appeals by concerned party leaders and stakeholders were not ignored.

"The incident that we saw was because appeals by the leaders of the party in the local government, Engr. Seni Ayorinde, Alhaja Faida Sarumi-Akintunde, Princess Ronke Ogunremi, Mr Adebayo (Alaga Mesan) and other party executives were defied. It was obvious that they are hellbent on pushing 2027 election agenda. This is premature; it is just few days after the swearing-In of the new chairman and councillors in the local government," he lamented.

A party leader in the local government, who witnessed the drama at the legislative house, decried the incident as very unfortunate. "We had it on good authority that some party leaders came to the legislative house of our local government this morning to ensure their loyalists occupy the four principal offices in the legislative house. But when they realised that their loyalists will not emerge, they chose to disrupt the sitting process."

The source alleged that the suspected supporters in their desperate bid to actualise their agenda, imported political thugs to unleash mayhem on staff of the local government and party faithful that came to witness the appointment of principal officers of the local government legislative arm.

"The party leaders came to witness the process of electing the principal officers of the house but no one knew that they had given order to their political thugs to unleash mayhem on staff and other party faithfuls at the local government secretariat once their favourite candidates did not emerge. This is quite unfortunate," the source added.

Multiple sources said most of the councillors that were at the centre of the crisis had been  identified, while the APC leadership would take the appropriate action in due course.

Nairaland GeneralOPINION: Obasa: Blinded By His Ambition by Amara246(op): 7:59am On Nov 25, 2024
Attempt by the Speaker, Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, to use Thursday’s budget presentation by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to settle political scores will forever hunt him and hurt his career, writes Shola Oyeyipo

Whoever seeks the peace and progress of Lagos State, and understands the import of the sneering show of shame exhibited last Thursday by the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, during the 2025 budget presentation by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, must have experienced a rather concerning spectacle.

Inspired by overt complex but shackled by biological defects to properly process his thoughts and actions, Obasa took Lagos on a short excursion of the unsightly guttering that most likely gave rise to him.

From the audacity of his veiled threat to a sitting governor and his open, yet, appalling demand for absurd appeasement, it seemed the gloves are off now.

There appears to be no more hiding place or pretence between him and the governor he now brazenly and openly considers a rival rather than the partners they are meant to be.

All that had been in the realm of speculations or mere rumour have been stamped to be true. Thanks to the unthinking speaker. At the presentation of the 2025 budget, an event, which by practice and convention, always presents a global city like Lagos, an opportunity to further put itself on the world map, Obasa chose to make a mess of it on account of non-existent political rivalry, accentuated by poverty of ambition, to expose the joke that he is.

He probably didn’t even realise that there could be some foreign investors watching from different parts of the world – London, New York, Paris, Beijing, Brussels – to see the trajectory of the economy of a megacity in the coming year?

Or isn’t it the same budget presentation that Lagos used to invite seasoned economists and captains of industry to witness, just to show the importance attached to the event and take them through plans for the year in focus? As a serious business, budget presentation has never been a charade that Obasa has suddenly turned it into, thus desecrating the hallowed chamber. The reason this despicable showing was more worrisome is because it came from the longest serving speaker in the state. At least, for now. To add to this infantile demeanour is that the whole thing was not spontaneous. Obasa and his thoughtless allies in the assembly actually orchestrated it all, spending quality time to plan plain shamelessness.

This included their decision to not applaud the governor after his speech and also not to wear agbada for the occasion but to sport sunshades. Even Gen-Zs would do better. But before you think this is an exaggeration of what might have happened, especially if you didn’t watch the event, you may want to read some of the excerpts from the drivel the speaker called speech.

“…That being said, it is necessary to harp on the fact that under democracy, this arm of government remains independent. This House, of course, recognises this and will always be so, even though we work hand-in-hand with other arms of government. “It is also important to state here that this House is a sanctuary and temple, just like every other temple anywhere where we all worship. No one will violate any temple and expect the gods to accept his or her sacrifice.

“And if such happens, there must be an appease to the gods to accept such atonement. No amount of intimidation or coercing will disintegrate or change the belief of all the members of this institution!

“Today, we want to assure Mr Governor that this honourable House will look at the budget and do the necessary scrutiny as usual. But it should be noted that this institution remains resolute. We will never be disgraced, abused, or ridiculed in the name of creating a seamless working ambiance.

“Let me also emphasise that those who live in glass house must not throw stone as the saying goes. This also brings to my mind, according to our people: eni ba yara logun ngbe. Meaning, the god of iron recognises the swift ones.

“In other words, those who are facilitating or planning to interfere in this House or destroy the cohesion of this institution should also be prepared for same fate.

“May I use this medium to sensitise us more on the need to build and sustain our party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), regarding our focus for 2027. We need to continue to mobilise people just as I do frequently.

“I have made it a personal task to mobilise people on the platform of Mandate, which has been misconstrued by some political detractors as being selfish aspiration on the ground for me to become governor of the state.

“There is the need, however, to correct this wrong impression. My concern is about building our party, and whatever we do is mainly for this cause.

“To the blackmailers who have embarked on the mission to distort and redefine our mission, let me state it unequivocally here. Our intention is to promote our party on the platform of Mandate.

“Also, becoming governor is secondary; it is something that I have not given a serious consideration. Nevertheless, that does not mean I am too young or lack experience to run; whereas, those who have been before me are not better of…”

So, Obasa and his travel buddies are now gods to be appeased? He went on to conclude that those who had been before him were not better off? What is he even saying here? The question is, who is he close to in all the boxes of consideration for leadership – from speakership to governorship? The closest anyone can relate to him in terms of disposition is MC Oluomo, who unfortunately has even kept and maintained a better steeze in public. From day one, Obasa has remained a defacing character to the beautiful portrait of Lagos. No less an error of choice, which speaks, sometimes, to the warped leadership recruitment process for crass political correctness in the state. He has reduced the very essence of the cosmopolitan description of the state and makes leadership appear like a free-for-all.

The question on where Obasa derives his “borrowed confidence” from will be asked at other times. But if he is stoking crisis in the state or picking on Sanwo-Olu because of a reward that will never come, then he must be a very poor student of history.
He is no more than a cannon fodder – an expendable more or less – who would be used maximally and dumped when all that is left is sheer nuisance without values. Again, if he thinks in considering worthy characters for the Lagos governorship, he would ever cross anyone’s mind, then he must have slept for too long, struggling to wake up from a choking nightmare.

The fact that he even found the budget presentation an appropriate forum to denigrate an office he aspires to, promote political agenda and hint at group affiliation (Mandate), is in itself a failed strategy that is sure to consume him, ultimately.

The countdown to 2027 has begun, without a doubt, and everyone who saw his fickle display of power yesterday would be back to remind him of this very shameful event, by which time he would be no more than a used up clod.

Nairaland GeneralStakeholders Urges FG To Reject Divisive Voices In The Niger Delta by Amara246(op): 9:05pm On Nov 19, 2024
….Calls For Focus On Unity And Progress

Concerned stakeholders identified as Niger Delta Renaissance Youth Network, have called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to decisively reject the influence of divisive figures in the Niger Delta, such as Boyloaf, Ayeri Emami, amongst others stating that these individuals have been in the business of promoting narratives and actions that threatens the unity and stability of the region.

The group In a statement signed by it’s spokesperson Comrade Simon Ogbe on Tuesday, stated that the Niger Delta, a critical hub for Nigeria’s economic stability due to its vast oil resources, has long faced challenges including environmental degradation, underdevelopment, and social unrest and to address these issues, the federal government established the Presidential Amnesty Program (PAP), aimed at rehabilitating former militants, promoting socio-economic development, and fostering peace in the region.

It said “In recent years, the presidential amnesty program has gained significant traction under the leadership of Dr. Dennis Otuaro, who is widely regarded as a result-oriented administrator. We laud Dr. Otuaro for his innovative style of bringing technical expertise and impartiality to the program, allowing it to move in the right direction while deli meaningful outcomes to communities.

“His leadership has been described as a cornerstone of the stability currently enjoyed in the Niger Delta. However, the actions of certain individuals, including Boyloaf and Ayeri Emami, is flagged as counterproductive to these efforts. It is widely known that these figures lack genuine political influence or followership in the region, and their involvement is seen as self-serving. We have it under good authority that they are accused of leveraging crises for personal gain rather than contributing to lasting peace.

“It has also been noted that these individuals supported the PDPpresidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar in the last election, opposing President Tinubu’s candidacy. Despite the fact that Boyloaf received huge sum of money from president Tinubu’s core allies in Bayelsa State yet the results were not encouraging as Tinubu failed in Southern Ijaw Local Government.
These set of self acclaimed leaders and their social media tap dog by name Jude Gbaboyor are fully known as political betrayers and now turning themselves to be instruments of darkness and blackmails against Mr presidents renewed hope administration all because of greed , hatred and selfishness.
This surely underscores their lack of credibility and capacity to represent the interests of the Niger Delta people.

“Given these concerns, we hereby urge the presidency to focus on engaging with credible leaders, community representatives, and civil society organizations that are genuinely committed to the welfare of the Niger Delta. Prioritizing these voices will ensure that decisions are informed by those with a vested interest in peace, development, and reconciliation.

“ We cannot compromise the fragile peace currently enjoyed in the Niger Delta. It must be preserved through inclusive and constructive dialogue. Allowing divisive figures to influence policies or programs risks undermining the progress made so far and could potentially lead to a regression into conflict.” The statement added.

The stakeholders however, expressed their unwavering support for President Tinubu’s administration and prayed for the success of his leadership in steering the nation toward unity and progress. They urged the presidency to remain steadfast in its commitment to fairness and national interest, particularly in addressing the complexities of the Niger Delta.

This call to action reflects a collective desire to see the Niger Delta become a beacon of hope and resilience, ensuring a brighter future for the region and the nation as a whole.

Nairaland GeneralUnion Write Ministry, Decry Dr. Onuoha's Continued Tenure As FCFMT Provost by Amara246(op): 5:38pm On Nov 16, 2024
....Says Compliance With Public Service Regulations As Extension Nears Expiration Very Important

The Joint Research and Allied Institutions Staff Union JORAISU has demanded that the Federal College of Fisheries and Marine Technology FCFMT enforce the end of Dr. Chucks Onuoha’s tenure as Provost when his four-month extension expires in mid-November.

In a letter dated October 23, 2024, addressed to the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, the union emphasized that the extension was granted as a temporary measure while warning that any further extension would not only violate public service regulations but also erode the institution’s credibility.

The letter obtained by Nigerianews24.com.ng, signed by JORAISU Chairman Kabir Mohammed, highlighted that both the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and the Federal Ministry of Marine Resources had been formally notified of the tenure expiration. It argued that Onuoha has compromised the Ministry of blue economy by China's must go method.

The union further urged these ministries to uphold the rule of law by ensuring a seamless transition of leadership. It proposed that a subordinate officer assume an acting capacity until a substantive Provost is appointed, emphasizing that such a move is critical to maintaining the integrity and accountability of the institution.

The union further cautioned that granting another extension would have severe consequences, including public backlash, legal challenges, and reputational damage for the college and the ministries involved. They argued that strict adherence to public service regulations is essential for preserving institutional integrity and preventing abuses of power that could destabilize the institution.

JORAISU concluded its appeal by warning that allowing Dr. Onuoha to remain in office beyond the stipulated period would undermine trust in public service. The union called on the relevant authorities to prioritize transparency and accountability in overseeing the transition process, ensuring the Federal College of Fisheries and Marine Technology sets a standard for compliance with public service laws.

Nairaland GeneralLakurawa Terrorists: A Memo To NSA, Security Chiefs by Amara246(op): 7:40pm On Nov 13, 2024
By Mukhtar Ya’u Madobi,

Last week, the Defence and Force Headquarters confirmed the existence of a new terror group, "Lakurawa," operating in the Northwest, particularly in the Kebbi and Sokoto axes.

This joint statement substantiates an earlier alert raised by Sokoto lawmaker representing Tangaza/Gudu Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives about the presence of this highly-dangerous criminal syndicate in the state.

Both Sokoto and Kebbi States have long struggled with attacks from organized bandits who routinely disrupt socio-economic activities by killing, abducting for ransom, rustling livestock, imposing levies, and destroying farmlands.

Given the current trajectory of Nigeria’s security landscape, it is imperative that no state should be forced to face additional security challenges in any form.

The most concerning aspect of the emergence of this new terror group is the fear that, if not immediately confronted and neutralized, the situation may escalate to a level comparable to the persistent Boko Haram insurgency, which has plagued the BAY states (Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe) in the Northeast.

Boko Haram initially surfaced as a minority group in Maiduguri, the capital city of Borno State, known for violent extremism and radical ideology under the pioneer leadership of the late Mohammed Yusuf. Although the group existed for years, it became widely known in 2009, when it began its violent campaign and declared war on the state, demonstrating its desire to establish a Caliphate—a development that Nigeria’s government, under the late President Umar Musa Yar'adua, condemned as treasonous.

It is unfortunate that Nigeria has been unable, for over a decade, to fully contain Boko Haram, a non-state actor that not only recruited and radicalized others within society but also formed alliances with terrorist syndicates operating across Africa and the Middle East, such as Al Qaeda and ISIS. Numerous captured insurgents have been identified as non-Nigerians, highlighting the group’s international ties.

In addition, a faction of Boko Haram evolved into the Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP), another powerful group wreaking havoc across communities in the Northeast. Boko Haram has now expanded operations into Niger, Cameroon, and Chad, turning a local problem into a regional crisis. This concerning trajectory raises questions about governmental and institutional response.

Similar to Boko Haram, reports indicate that "Lakurawa" has been active in Sokoto villages for the past six years. In October 2018, around 200 jihadis reportedly arrived in Sokoto’s Gudu and Tangaza areas from across the Niger border. Local accounts describe them as "light-skinned, Arabic- and Fulfulde-speaking herders" from Mali.

Specifically, communities in Tangaza and Gudu LGAs raised an alarm over suspicious activities by herders in the Marake and Tsauni forests. Initial police investigations concluded that this armed group, locally known as Lakurawa, were merely herders. However, recent reports from HumAngle suggest that, although the police suspected the group was heavily armed, they deemed them seasonal visitors from Niger.

Last week, however, Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters labeled the so-called herders a new terror group linked to Sahel-based jihadists. “The terrorists exploited gaps in border cooperation and difficult terrains to infiltrate remote areas in Northwestern states and spread their ideology,” said Edward Buba, the Director of Defence Media Operations.

The military has now declared nine members of this group wanted, including Abu Khadijah, Abdurrahman, Dadi Gumba a.k.a. Abu Muhammed, Usman Shehu, Abu Yusuf, Musa Wa’a, Ibrahim Suyeka, Ba Sulhu, and Idris Taklakse.

Reports suggest the group operates in Tangaza, Gudu, Ilela, Binji, and Silame, entering border communities from Niger, Chad, and Mali. Residents say the terrorists preach in Hausa and Fulfulde, impose levies, and even help locals combat other bandit groups so as to gain influence.

The Nigerian Armed Forces have now taken action against this terror group, though they initially blamed residents for allowing the sect’s presence. However, at this point, it is not productive to start shifting blame on who is responsible for the earlier incursion, settlement, and expansion of territories by the terror group. Instead, all security actors must collaborate to assess this threat and devise viable solutions to prevent it from escalating, as was the case with Boko Haram.

The intelligence community—including the Department of State Services (DSS), Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA), and National Intelligence Agency (NIA)—must work together to gather actionable intelligence on this group to swiftly address the threat.

Furthermore, the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), led by Malam Nuhu Ribadu, should play a central role in coordinating interagency efforts. Adequate support and logistics are essential to ensure our security forces can operate effectively.

Subsequently, local residents must also contribute by reporting any suspicious movements, enabling timely responses.

No doubt, with a whole-of-society approach, the issue of Lakurawa and similar security threats in Nigeria can be effectively managed and become a thing of the past.
