Nigeria’s food and drugs regulatory body, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has confirmed that the NIVEA Black & White Roll- On manufactured in Nigeria is safe for public use. This is contained in the update it issued on its initial Safety Alert Notification of October 31, 2024, regarding NIVEA BLACK & WHITE Invisible Roll-on deodorant (50 ml) batch number 93529610, in relation to the general European Union (EU) Rapid Alert System for Dangerous Non-Food Products (RAPEX). In the latest update on the issue on its website dated November 2, 2024, the agency confirmed the safety of the NIVEA BLACK & WHITE Invisible Roll-on deodorant (50 ml) manufactured in Nigeria. “A recent investigation shows that the Black and White Nivea Roll-on deodorant manufactured in Nigeria does not contain the non-compliant ingredient (BMHCA)”, NAFDAC said in the updated alert notification. It would be recalled that following the release of the notification by the agency, the manufacturers of the product, Beiersdorf, had issued a statement in which it assured its esteemed customers that the Batch No. 93529610 in question has not been marketed in Nigeria and thus was never recalled by Beiersdorf, the owner of NIVEA brand, as the legal manufacturer. It added that the batch in question had, in fact, expired in January 2022 and was hence at the time fully compliant with the then valid European cosmetic regulation. The company also pointed out that based on current European legislation, the use of ingredient 2-(4-tert-Butylbenzyl propionaldehyde (LilialTM) in cosmetic products has been banned from the European markets as of March 1, 2022. “As a responsible corporate citizen, Beiersdorf is working collaboratively with NAFDAC to safeguard the interest of the Nigerian consumers by ensuring that our locally manufactured product meets the global quality standards”, the company said, adding that the safety of its consumers remains its highest priority, consistent with its ethical philosophy as a business. “In pursuit of this commitment, Beiersdorf’s entire NIVEA product portfolio formulations have been reformulated to be Lilial-free formulas in full compliance with the EU Regulation on cosmetic products well ahead of its Lilial ban coming into effect as far back as March 1, 2022. For instance, the formulation of NIVEA BLACK & WHITE Invisible Roll-on deodorant has been Lilial-free since at least 2020 across the globe, including Nigeria”, the company further said. It said it had informed its trade partners ahead of time and reminded them of their responsibility to remove the outdated Lilial-containing products within the legal timeframe to fulfill their obligations with the European Cosmetic Product Regulation.

There have been subtle projections for the Lagos state governorship election in 2027. Unfortunately, these early promptings seem to lack the requisite intellectual rigour for the dynamic politics and leadership demands of the state of aquatic splendour. Shola Oyeyipo writes. A general build-up to the 2027 national elections can no longer be dismissed as “too early” again, given the current provisions of the nation’s electoral laws. By the letters of these laws, elected officials can hardly savour two years at a stretch to deliver on their promises, before campaign distractions commence. Sections 76(2), 116(2), 132(2) and 178(2) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), state that elections shall hold not earlier than one hundred and fifty (150) days and not later than thirty (30) days before the expiration of the term of office of` the last holder of that office. By these provisions, the electoral commission, INEC, is empowered by Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act 2022 to issue Notice for the elections not later than 360 days before the date of the elections. Once this is done, governance takes the back stage and politics becomes the in-thing. Thus, if anyone is starting to project for the next bout of election, it may be considered part of the build-up, albeit an unlawful indulgence at this time. Yet, the recent balloon trials about the likely turn that the Lagos governorship might take were not only poor attempts at simulating anything, they failed to show a grasp of the issues that might dominate political discourse at this time. In one of those efforts, the failure to credit the president, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, with deserving political intelligence by expressly tipping his son, Seyi, as a likely choice for the Lagos governorship, was one idiotic undertaking loaded with absolute baloney. Excuse qualification for a bit as a different debate on its own, no other more serious political considerations, including religion and geopolitical factors spared a thought for him. How a president, who would be battling to return to office, would willfully set his empire on fire, is unlikely his disposition, even though a renowned risk-taking political juggernaut. It’s no doubt a delicate wager and there’s no debating the fact that no politician worth his salt would travel, not just on such a highway to nowhere, but obstreperously stoke a fire that would consume all that he already has in the bag. That said, the qualification debate can now step forward. However, anyone looks at this, what has Seyi done that would make his father push him forward for the Lagos governorship? Take a quick review of the profiles of everyone who had governed Lagos, starting from his father and say to yourself which of them he comes close to, including Akinwunmi Ambode, who was not allowed to seek re-election? The Yoruba will readily ask anyone with poor reasoning to smell his own words and tell how badly it stinks. Perhaps, those pushing this agenda should read over their garbage and tell themselves how that is feasible with all the variables waiting to determine the next choice for Lagos. Curiously, the other leg to the early promptings and their tawdry delivery was the veiled move to put down some names, while making others appear impossible choices. It is true and arguable that the Senator representing Lagos East, Tokunbo Abiru, is a good material for Lagos. From the halls of many banks to the red chamber, it is hard to dismiss or downplay his eligibility, suitability and capacity. He fits the bill in all ramifications and has earned a constant mention in the race for the Lagos governorship, even before he went to the senate. These notwithstanding, he, too, would battle other factors, although determined by the “owner” of Lagos, when the time comes. His choice is therefore not a given yet. Interestingly, one name that is gradually creeping into the mix, and which a majority of the Lagos politicians are coming to terms with as seemingly fitting the bill and picture of Tinubu’s unusual choice for governor is the current Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa. Whatever analysis anyone is doing now that does not yield a deserving space to Alausa is probably clowning for want of what to write. He may appear unnoticed and unpopular for now, many observers from Lagos already see his redeployment from junior minister at the Ministry of Health to Education as instructive. This development, they now argue, was not only to properly position and prepare him for the Lagos challenge, they are convinced that the ministry would start to get more votes as part of design to empower and put him on a stronger footing ahead of the decision to either draft him into the race or empower him. For an average politician, his nomination to the cabinet was not a surprise. The duo of Tinubu and Alausa had come a long way since their days in the United States. While the latter was said to have done a lot in service for the former back in the day, Tinubu has not had the opportunity to compensate him. The time to do so is now. Unfortunately, there’s one more name that is already being mentioned, sadly in talk-down tone and that is the current Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat – a man of class and distinction. While no one can emerge Lagos governor without the blessing of the president, except, of course, God personally steps in, Hamzat is one material that both the political class and the ordinary citizens of the state have continued to tip as Lagos’ best bet. Their reasons suit all logics. First, as the current deputy governor, who would have run the state with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for eight years by 2027, it would make transition easy. The fact that he understands the development agenda of the state as an active player cancels out many “ifs”. In addition, he satisfies practically all political considerations as far as the race to the Lagos governorship is concerned. Smart, sound and very intelligent, he is also hands-on, so much that his choice would naturally relieve the president of any worry back home while the battle for his reelection rages across the nation. His knowledge of Lagos, development politics, issues and the management of the political class puts him miles ahead of everyone else. This also explains while those conversant with these facts but want someone else have continued to use his strengths against him, insinuating that the president would not field a man, who seems solid in everything. By implications, the move is intended to set him up for failure and make him lose favour before the president. Indeed, some have also openly sung to him that anyone who overtly or subtly indicates interest in the governorship never gets it, citing the president’s style as constant in this decision. However, while it may appear that the president has always gambled with his choice of the Lagos governor, and has always been lucky to end up with good hands, including Ambode, his inadequacies nonetheless, political dynamics also demand a review of strategy for results that are in sync with current realities. At the end of the day, the only person who will determine the next governor of Lagos state is God through the instrumentality of the people. The same God has also placed in President Tinubu, the power and influence to choose right on behalf of the people again in 2027, without downplaying the prevailing factors, both in the state and his own election. But the choice candidate must have the right character, temper, knowledge and capacity to do the job. After all, this is Lagos. In the final analysis, the early promptings are not completely out of place and may help stoke real conversations ahead of the Lagos 2027 poll. However, pandering to obvious idiocy in order to flesh up weak analyses is counterproductive, even to their own idea of who the cap fits. The Niger Delta Youths for Positive Change (NDYPC), has called on Federal Government to increase funding and expand the Presidential Amnesty Program (PAP) to ensure sustainable peace, development, and economic stability in the Niger Delta region. In a recent letter to the National Security Adviser signed by its National Coordinator, Comrade Elliott Yibalua Yibakeni, the group on Friday, outlined ten reasons for this expansion, emphasizing the critical role the program plays in fostering peace and empowering communities. It includes; 1. Sustained Peace: The PAP has significantly reduced violence in the Niger Delta by mitigating militancy. Enhanced funding would support long-term peace and further developmental efforts, addressing systemic poverty in the region. 2. Youth Empowerment: Increased funding would enable broader access to vocational training and educational opportunities, helping to channel youth energy away from militancy and toward constructive economic participation. 3. Job Creation: More funds would foster secondary industries, promoting entrepreneurship, skills development, and self-sufficiency, thereby decreasing the allure of militancy. 4. Community Development: The program could support grassroots initiatives that empower traditional institutions, women, and youths, improving the quality of life and creating a sense of inclusion in underdeveloped oil-producing communities. 5. Social Reintegration: Additional resources would enable proper reintegration of former militants, underserved youths, unskilled and uneducated youths. Thereby reducing poverty and enhancing skill levels within the population. 6. Long-term Peacebuilding: The PAP can serve as a foundation for conflict prevention and peacebuilding, addressing potential unrest and fostering dialogue among communities. 7. Economic Diversification: With a historical dependence on oil, the region could benefit from investments in alternative livelihoods such as agriculture and tourism, which would reduce reliance on the oil sector and promote sustainable employment. 8. Enhanced Monitoring and Evaluation: Expanded funding would improve engagement with communities and provide the government with direct feedback on local needs, helping shape responsive governance. 9. Strengthening Local Institutions: A better-funded PAP would support organizations and training centers, helping build domestic capacity and providing alternative revenue streams within Nigeria’s economy. 10. National Stability: An expanded PAP would assist in the retrieval of illegal weapons in the Niger Delta, securing peace for future generations and reinforcing national stability. The NDYPC highlighted the amnesty program’s role in addressing challenges at the grassroots level and emphasized that the future of Nigeria’s peace, prosperity, and security heavily relies on maintaining stability in the Niger Delta. The group also urged the National Security Adviser to advocate for increased resources for the PAP to ensure its goals are achieved.

The leadership of our Union has identified fraudulent advertisements from individuals falsely claiming to represent a dubious association of Transporters and Oil and Gas Marketers. The association urge the public and government institutions to be vigilant against these unscrupulous figures, who seek to exploit the current economic landscape following the removal of fuel subsidies. The Union reaffirms its support for recognized associations in the industry and urges all stakeholders to reject these miscreants and their deceptive practices. The open letter read thou; The attention of the leadership of our great Union has been drawn to some advertisements on news media of some unscrupulous and dangerous individuals claiming to be members of one amorphous association they claim is both Transporters and Marketers of the Oil and Gas at the same time, and we wish to state that this association is nothing but assemblage of failed Rent Seekers in the Subsidy Regime and Irredeemable Smugglers of Petroleum Products disguising as businessmen and women. The general public and government institutions are hereby warned and strongly . advised to be very wary of these individuals who are desperately seeking ways and means to continue to exploit Nigerians and collecting rents in other manners since the current administration removed subsidy from petroleum products and make smuggling unprofitable for them. The leadership of our great Union recognizes National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) as the legitimate umbrella body of Transporters in the Nigeria Oil and Gas Industry and Employers of Petroleum Tankers Drivers (PTD) of which our Union has Collective Bargaining Agreement with on behalf of Petroleum Tankers Drivers. We also recognize Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), Major Energy Marketers Association of Nigeria (MEMAN) as well as Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association of Nigeria (DAPPMAN) as legitimate marketers of Oil and Gas products. These are associations of Marketers that are well known and respected in the downstream sector of the Nigeria oil and gas industry. There is also no ambiguity in the fact that the Nigeria Labour laws only recognize Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) and Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) as the umbrella bodies for oil and gas Workers in Nigeria. These are the two organizations that represent and protect the job interests of the Nigeria oil and gas workers including Petroleum lanker Drivers (PTD) as prescribed in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Niger AFFILIATED TO THE NIGERIA LABOUR CONGRESS (NLC) & IndustriALL Global Union Ref: SUPPORT OUR DREAM GAS WORKERS We implore all well-meaning Nigerians and government officials whose names these Usurpers and Rent Seekers are dropping to urgently disregard any invitation from them and publicly denounce them because they are purely mischief-makers, names Droppers and unscrupulous business individuals that can sell their families and country for money and are unfortunately part of those that plunge the country into the current economic woes and hardship that the country is currently battling and struggling with. …As TCN bemoans vandalism in Northern Regions …Unveils SCADA System Senator Shehu Sani, a renowned Nigerian senator and human rights activist, has cautioned Nigerians against politicizing the issue of frequent national grid collapse, instead calling for cooperation with the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN). Speaking to select members of the press in his Abuja office on Saturday, Senator Sani described those calling for the head of the TCN management as “poorly informed.” He highlighted the visible improvements in electricity supply since the arrival of the Minister of Power and the TCN Managing Director. Senator Sani emphasized that Nigeria’s power sector has seen significant progress under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, contrary to previous efforts that saw tens of billions of dollars spent with little result. He questioned why Nigerians are not asking about the current budget allocation for electricity or the private sector’s involvement. The senator acknowledged the challenges TCN faces, particularly in the northern region, where according to him insurgency and banditry have ravaged government properties. He urged politicians to stop politicizing grid collapse issues and instead focus on the harsh reality. He further warned civil society organizations against exploiting the situation to blackmail TCN management. The senator reiterating that the TCN management should be lauded efforts, urged Nigerians to support them in securing a stable electricity supply. Meanwhile the TCN has attributed the recent blackout in the North West region to vandalism and sabotage. Two towers along the 330kv Shiroro-Kaduna transmission lines were damaged, disrupting power transmission. TCN engineers have implemented temporary measures to supply bulk power to the affected regions. Recall, residents in Kaduna, Zaria, and Kano expressed disappointment and frustration with the activities of vandals, calling for stiffer penalties for offenders. They lamented the extra costs of replacing vandalized properties. In a significant development, the TCN disclosed that it has unveiled the advanced Supervision Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system to manage the national grid. Stakeholders have hailed this move as a commitment to addressing power sector issues. As the TCN works to restore power transmission, Nigerians are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities that may compromise the national grid.

The Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas, in a bid to muzzle the press, has issued a memo restricting state-owned media houses, including Taraba State Broadcasting Service (TSBS), from reporting on activities in Takum Local Government Area, specifically the planned demolition of Ukwe Palace and Central Mosque. The memo, signed by Washi Willy Nbasu, The Permanent Secretary Government House, on October 15, 2024, has generated widespread tension among the people of Takum, who viewed and tagged his move as an attempt to provoke chaos and destabilize the peaceful coexistence in the region. Recall that the indigenous Kuteb people through the Kuteb Yatso of Nigeria KYN, have vehemently rejected the state government's plan to demolish their ancestral Ukwe Palace and Central Mosque, citing its potential for violent conflict. They however, called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the service chiefs to intervene and restrain Governor Agbu Kefas from pursuing this destructive path. The demolition plan has been widely condemned, with many viewing it as a blatant disregard for the cultural heritage and traditions of the Kuteb people. This move by the State Government is perceived as a deliberate attempt to erase the history and identity of the region. "This is a clear attempt to silence the press and suppress the voices of our people. We will not stand idly by while our cultural heritage is destroyed." said a local resident, who wishes to remain anonymous. Meanwhile the Taraba State Government's action and memo issued, have raised concerns about press freedom and government accountability in the state. The international community and local stakeholders are watching closely, urging the state government to reconsider its actions and respect the rights of the people.

The Progressives Action for Justice, Unity, and Democracy (PAJUD) has strongly condemned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for its alleged harassment and persecution of former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello. The group stated its displeasure on how In a shocking display of brazen power and vindictiveness, the EFCC has resorted to using arbitrary court injunctions and Gestapo-style tactics to hound and persecute the former governor. In a statement to newsmen on Monday, PAJUD Convener, Comrade Musa Abdullahi, described the EFCC's actions as unethical and scandalous, citing the agency's blatant disregard for due process and the rule of law. It noted that despite Bello's willingness to cooperate with the EFCC, the agency has continued to employ desperate tactics to discredit and harm him. The group claims that EFCC Chairman, Olukayode Olanipekun, has a personal vendetta against Bello, stemming from the former governor's refusal to secretly visit him through a special entrance gate. This perceived slight they say, has allegedly led to the EFCC's sustained victimization of Bello, with the agency determined to secure a guilty verdict by any means necessary. PAJUD criticized the EFCC's handling of the case, stating that it undermines the principles of justice, fairness, and due process. The group expressed concern over the EFCC's direction under Olukayode's leadership, highlighting the agency's past successes and its former reputation as a role model for anti-corruption activists. The statement also urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene, citing Bello's contributions to his 2023 presidential election victory. PAJUD emphasized that the EFCC's actions are not only a disservice to Bello but also an embarrassment to the Tinubu administration. Furthermore, PAJUD questioned the EFCC's motives, suggesting that the agency is pursuing a politically motivated agenda. The group demanded that Olukayode recuse himself from the case, citing his apparent bias and lack of impartiality. The group however called on the EFCC to allow Bello his day in court, rather than resorting to portfolio injunctions and other underhanded tactics. The group emphasized that Bello, as a bonafide citizen of Nigeria and a stalwart of the All Progressives Congress, deserves the same rights and protections afforded to all citizens. “The EFCC's actions against Bello are a blowback to the anti-graft campaign and an embarrassment to the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration. We will not allow further breaches of Bello's rights. The EFCC must redeem and restore its lost glory as a role model for anti-corruption activists.” In conclusion, PAJUD reiterated its commitment to justice, unity, and democracy, and vowed to continue monitoring the EFCC's actions in the Bello case. The group urged Nigerians to demand accountability and transparency from the EFCC, ensuring that the agency upholds the principles of fairness and due process in all its dealings.

A lot currently rests on the shoulders of the South West geo-political zone, and her leadership is not oblivious of this fact. As a cosmopolitan region with some level of political sophistication, it is one part of the country that has always played a significant role in the nation’s rich political history. Even more instructive at this time in the life of the nation, is that it is the zone, where the incumbent president, Bola Tinubu, comes from. It is, therefore, a delicate balance – managing her political relevance as well as her irrevocable support for one of her own – the President of Nigeria. It was against this backdrop that last weekend’s regional assembly by the All Progressives Congress (APC) members secured its place in the new thinking for a better region and nation. Stomping the meeting hall with flashes of bright colours that typified regional unity and cohesion, the South-west might have set a new agenda in party politics and management. Chairman of the regional assembly for APC and Lagos State Governor, Mr. BabajideSanwo-Olu seemed to understand the weight of the assignment on his hands and did not disappoint anyone either. Incidentally, in his case, apart from coordinating activities of the region, he is also the governor of the president’s home state. This, though, makes his job interesting. It is certainly not an enviable one either. But the Lagos governor seemed to be up to the task. The fact that he and his team could come up with an idea that suddenly birthed the somewhat reunion of the political leadership of the zone was not a mean feat. Assembled in an expansive hall at the Eko Hotel and Suites, Lagos, were over 800 people. They ranged from local government administrators to state assembly members, their national assembly counterparts, governors, as well as all the former this and former that. With evident nostalgia permeating the hall, typified by the near-endless banter from people, who had not seen one another in ages, and wrapped in many shades of beautiful colours, the gathering offered more than it was conceived for and indeed, worth the time of everyone. “As a key part of the Nigerian State, the Southwest is blessed with immense potential to lead the country towards prosperity,” Sanwo-Olu stated as he began to welcome people to the gathering. “I warmly welcome you to this significant gathering, where we come together as one family to explore ways to work more closely and effectively for the benefit of our people, our region, and our nation. “Today presents an opportunity for us to share ideas and agree on strategies to take the Southwest to greater heights. We have abundant human and natural resources, exceptional creativity and intellectual strength, as well as a rich cultural heritage. “These are the unique assets we can harness to move our region forward and give Nigeria a respected place in the global community,” he said. According to him, “This meeting is not only an opportunity to reflect on how far we have come as a region but also to reignite hope and chart a course for a better Nigeria – one where poverty and lack are things of the past. “As a people bound by common values of integrity and respect, we are in a unique position to change Nigeria’s fortunes. The Southwest has always been the heartbeat of this nation, recognised as the pacesetters in innovation and progress.” To put this in context, he recalled that, “Our past leaders earned this pride of place through their visionary leadership. They built Africa’s first television station (WNTV), West Africa’s first skyscraper (Cocoa House), and Nigeria’s first stadium (Liberty Stadium), all through disciplined management and strategic investment in education and agriculture. “They banished ignorance and poverty from our region, instilling values of integrity and respect, which gave rise to the ‘Omoluabi’ ethos – the hallmark of honesty and dignity that has shaped our identity.” This was where it started to get interesting. The poser here: “So, where did we lose our way? At what point did farming become a job we looked down on? How did our land, once rich in opportunity, produce beggars despite its vast potential? “How did our youth turn into street urchins, kidnappers, and fraudsters? The truth is, we have all fallen short. But today, we have the chance to address these failings, retrace our steps, and rebuild our values.” Sanwo-Olu, without a doubt, gave an amazing speech that soon set the pace for serious deliberations on the future of the region. The discussions began very quickly. However, in a full blaze, former governor of Ekiti State, Dr. KayodeFayemi, finally set the stage on fire through his keynote address. He did not allow the inspiration spurred by Sanwo-Olu to simmer down before riding on the moment. Building on the foundation laid by the Lagos state governor, Fayemi noted that, “We in the South West wing of our party constitute an important pillar of the APC. I warmly salute and commend the decision to convene this zonal assembly of our party leaders and faithful for various reasons.” As a foundation member, and one of the many actors, who worked to help create the APC out of a coalition of like-minded parties and actors united by a progressive and forward-looking commitment to national unity and transformation, Fayemi was proud of the zeal with which the cadres in the South West embraced the party’s agenda for change and renewal when it was announced to them. After reeling off some of the successes of the party, since it came on stream in 2015, he also dwelt on some of the current challenges that have either obstructed the party or thwarted some of her noble plans and as well stymied some of the gains registered. “Not least among these challenges is the security situation in the country, a problem we inherited and which has continued to be a source of immense worry for all Nigerians, and rightly so. Understandably, the security question remains a topmost priority for President Tinubu. “Added to this are adverse domestic pressures and external shocks on the economy that have exacerbated the cost of living, and affected our quest to massively dent unemployment, especially as it affects the teeming population of young people. “We are also confronted with the task of stabilising the exchange rate of our national currency even as concerted efforts are being made to erode the parallel market, increase the capital budget in our national expenditure profile, and meet our various international obligations. “These are not problems that are easy to tackle, especially as the roots of many of them date back to the locust years of the PDP, and resolving them requires time, patience, and understanding. “It is correct that as the ruling party, we must confront them frontally without forgetting that we also owe a duty to explain our remedial and reform measures with all the empathy and humility that we can muster,” he explained. Proud of the road the APC had traveled since it came into existence, Fayemi said, “We cannot afford to rest on our laurels as a party or be complacent about anything. It is imperative that we openly and honestly acknowledge current challenges and develop a coherent and comprehensive plan that can enable us to confront them. “This we must do by resolutely learning lessons of experience. We should also be ready to mobilise ourselves for the urgent and necessary task of rebuilding the hope of our compatriots both in Project Nigeria and in our ability as a party committed to leading the charge against underdevelopment, disunity, and insecurity. “Without being defensive or unduly apologetic, we must dig deep to find that combination of humility, a sense of public service, an uncommon courage, and a tenacity of purpose to drive a shared national vision. These qualities served us so well in 2015 to enable us to write an important new chapter in our national electoral history. They can and will serve us well again if we re-commit to them.” Impressed by the thrust and turn-out at the gathering, President Tinubu, who said his eyes were set on the future generations and not future elections, capped the discussions in a presidential fashion. The president explained that the reforms being undertaken by his administration might have exposed the party to widespread criticisms, but assured the APC faithful that the “tough” decisions would finally set the country on the path towards prosperity. Represented by his Chief of Staff, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, the president acknowledged the solidarity being shown to his government in the difficult moments and stressed that his focus was not on the next election, but on improving the lives of Nigerians and to hand over a prosperous country to the next generation. “We acknowledge that our decisions have been tough, but they needed to be taken. The gains are at the end of the tunnel. That time will come when we will all be happy and thank our government for taking those decisions. “Right now, I am not thinking of the next election but about the next generation. This is why we are implementing reforms that are long overdue. This is the hallmark of a true leader.” Tinubu promised to give serious deliberations to the issues raised at the forum and further pledged to make the party more united to achieve its programmes. A former governor of Ogun State, Chief SegunOsoba, declared that the South West must support Tinubu’s administration unequivocally, no matter the price to be paid. Osoba warned that no matter the ill-feelings anyone might have against the person of the president or his administration, he must be supported not only to run out his first term in office but also to secure a second term. The veteran journalist disclosed that Tinubu was the first president from the progressive fold and, therefore, could not afford to fail. “We cannot and should not allow anyone to derail our democracy under Tinubu,” he insisted, adding that no money was left in the national treasury for subsidy when Tinubu took office. South West Zonal chairman of the APC, Hon. Isaac Kekemeke, said the party stood with the president for his courage to address the malady in the country. He said the caucus meeting was a move to resolve intra party crises and disagreements tearing members apart. On hispart, APC National Secretary, Senator AjibolaBasiru, said the caucus forum was sanctioned by the party national leadership to create a constant interface between elected members of the party and officials administering the affairs of the party. He disclosed that similar meetings would be held in other regions in order to galvanise more support for APC and its government. The idea was no doubt a good one and must be reviewed for sustainability. In fact, the next phase might be to start a similar gathering at the senatorial levels and gradually build up to the states before arriving at the regional level for an expanded and richer deliberation. Much as the outing was generally adjudged successful by a majority of the people, who attended and those who observed from the outside, the ruling party must continue to speak the truth to itself and the government, away from the aspiration of seeking to hold on to power. Unfortunately, for an idea that was well received across the South West and attended by all that matter in the region because of its originality and progressive intentions, Sanwo-Olu’s seemingly petty partners in the state assembly, led by the Speaker, Hon MudashiruObasa, boycotted the event. If this is not an obvious infantile disposition, what else could it be? While the Lagos lawmakers allegedly claimed not to have received an invitation to the event, the state, on the other hand, was said to have record of the invitations extended to them with clarity of thoughts and agenda. Expectedly, this is what usually happens when people undeserving of any offices at all find themselves in positions bigger than their dreams and intellectual credentials. They are unable to divorce politics from issues and real governance but quick to descend into the gutters at the slightest opportunity. It is only hoped that this maiden South West Assembly would not end up a one-off exercise but a sustainable initiative that would help the party and region grow her politics and leadership. The office of the Chief of Staff to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, has suddenly acquired a larger than life aura. The powers believed to be domicile in that office are now synonymous with that of the president himself. The progression of that office, through the window of time, started in recent years.
Rising from the backwaters of official obscurity, akin to the civil service rule of “being seen but not heard”, the office of the chief of staff to the president is now one that many people would do anything – indeed go to any length – to occupy.
Although not a constitutional creation, its functions are largely at the discretion of the president, with direct supervision of his activities, personal staff, and security details.
Since 1999, when former President Olusegun Obasanjo introduced the idea patterned after the US presidency, Aso Rock Villa, has played host to a few persons as chief of staff to successive presidents. Each of them lived their time and left their marks in the sand of time. From General Abdullahi Mohammed under Olusegun Obasanjo to Gbolade Osinowo under Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, Mike Oghiadomhe and Jones Arogbofa under Goodluck Jonathan, Abba Kyari and Ibrahim Gambari under Muhammadu Buhari and now Femi Gbajabiamila, under the current president, Bola Tinubu, that office has been shaped largely by the content of the characters of the individual appointees. Unfortunately, apart from the late Mallam Abba Kyari, who was considered “too powerful” under Buhari and thus, received constant knocks and criticisms for doing his job and taking the flaks for his principal, none other comes close to Gbajabiamila in terms of attacks and constant machination of antics designed exclusively to get rid of him. Today, Gbajabiamila is one of the most popular persons in the country – holding office or not. This, sadly, is not on account of the fact that he was not doing his job well. But essentially, because he has in his hands what several other people desperately covet. Perhaps, it comes with the job and the territory. But the recent interpretations accorded an otherwise innocuous statement by the presidency, which last week hinted at possible cabinet reshuffle was rather discrediting. Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, while addressing State House correspondents in Abuja, said Tinubu would be aided in his decision by public opinions that have been empirically extracted. In company with another Senior Special Assistant to the President on Digital and New Media, O’tega Ogra, Onanuga said there was no timeline to when Tinubu would reshuffle his cabinet, which he inaugurated in August, 2023. “I don’t have any timeline. The president has expressed his desire to reshuffle his cabinet, and he will do it. I don’t know whether he’s going to do it before October 1, but he will surely do it. “So that’s what I will say. He has not given us any timeline he’ll do it, but he will do it. He has expressed his plan he wants to do it,” he said. Ogra would further shed more light on the planned exercise. He explained that the president would be guided by an empirical process, making reference to the performance indicator of everyone. This, of course, was being coordinated by none other than the Special Adviser to the President on Policy Coordination and head of the Central Delivery Coordination Unit, Ms. Hadiza Bala Usman. He added: “We also need to realise that the president’s decision to reshuffle is also based on empirical evidence. He said it during the retreat for the ministers that they were going to have periodic reviews, and the decisions that are extracted from these reviews will be used to make that final decision. “I know he’s got a couple of reports, and as Mr. Onanuga said, when he’s ready to do that, I believe he will,” he said, adding that the president has also instructed his ministers to actively promote the accomplishments of his administration. “The president has given an order to all his ministers at the last Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting to go out there and speak about the activities of his administration. “Some of them have been media shy, television shy, radio shy, and he wants them to overcome all that and go out there and speak about what they have been doing. “Because the feeling out there is that government is not doing enough and the government has been doing a lot. It is up to them to go out there and blow their own trumpet. They should go out there and talk about what their ministries have been doing,” he added. Nothing in the statement above suggested that the president had hinted at the possibility of dropping any of his appointees. At best, the statement was big on the word “reshuffle” and not “shake-up” even though they both mean changes to the cabinet. However, while the former presupposes moving people around to improve the effectiveness of the government, the latter indicates a more chaotic situation, which suggests dropping some appointees outright, albeit for the same purpose. Still, it would not be out of place if he drops anyone as he deems fit. But the brazen misinterpretation of facts in some of the reports, insinuating that Gbajabiamila was top on the list of those who had been penciled in to be relieved of their duties, was not only curious, but further exposed the reality of the forces that seemed to have piled up against the chief of staff since he assumed office. For context, the expanded work of the chief of staff varies from president to president. Aside from the ability to exercise discretion, in addition to the rudimentary responsibilities of the office, he functions majorly at the whims of his principal. In the case of Gbajabiamila, he had so earned his principal’s confidence that the president once deemed it expedient to come out to defend and as well reiterate his confidence in him, at the peak of the attacks against him. This happened at one of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meetings in October 2023, during which Tinubu also set the ground rules for those eligible to attend the meeting. “Let me reiterate that a lot of stories are going around about what is happening. I’ve told everyone that I can make mistakes. They’re bound to air them out and correct them. “Perfection is of God. I have confidence in the integrity of my chief of staff. All campaigns of calumny and insinuations should stop. The buck stops here. “If I make a mistake, I’m ready to own up to it. We’re all joining hands to fight corruption, and we want to enforce the law with you,” he explained. Even if it was a façade (which it didn’t really seem like), the fact that the president came out to stoutly defend his chief of staff was enough to douse insinuations and quell the vacuous struggle for that office, intended to viciously pull down the current occupant, Gbajabiamila. The office of the chief of staff is not elective, and therefore, the struggle to acquire it is not just unsightly but also dishonourable. This insatiable lust for power accentuated by poverty of ambition, has peaked in this case, sadly, with disturbing consequences on the polity and governance. Isn’t it strange, therefore, that a chief of staff has many jobs on his hands and yet, in the same stroke, has none? Even worse, it is such a thankless call to service that earns the individual a legion of enemies as against medals. So, what about the vain struggle? In fact, at the state level, many governors had long adopted the idea of abandoning their chief of staff to make very good use of their deputy chief of staff, for personal reasons, instead. If the chief of staff was indispensable, why would they travel that route in the first place? It is, therefore, interesting to note how some people arrogate so much power to this office and rustle up huge imaginations about the identity of the occupant, sometimes beyond his own grasp. For instance, how in anyone’s wildest imagination is the chief of staff responsible for the state of economy or the rising costs of living? In what capacity, beyond advisory, would a chief of staff give instructions or directive to ministers, the CBN governor, heads of parastatals and agencies outside of the personal staff of the president? Yet, the impression created out there by the political hawks is that the chief of staff is the alternate president, a dip that could equally create a needless friction between the principal and his staff, where maturity and trust are lacking. This battle for space could even be extended to the vice-president, who might think he’d been shoved aside for the chief of staff to thrive. It’s a dangerous power gambit! For Gbajabiamila, there’s no gainsaying that the last 17 months must be the longest in his over two decades of public service and career. He has waltzed through some of the most demeaning allegations of corruption to being tagged the most powerful man in the country, in obvious moves to pit him against his boss. These ungodly orchestrations by the vermin in the corridors of power are enough to mess with his mental health and emotional stability, especially for a man with grownup kids, whose friends also read some of the “devastating lies” and are wont to ask relevant questions. Unfortunately, for both his real and perceived enemies, while Gbajabiamila does not appear desperate, his fate is clearly not in their hands either, but his principal, who once publicly stood for him, based on convictions. It also doesn’t mean they would back off if they failed in their current adventure. It is just characteristic of the filthy power play in a black society, where every approach is considered fair, so long the end justifies the means. They are likely to moot and sculpt other more devastating plots in no time. Until the president decides what he ultimately does with his appointees, some of whom are being reportedly considered for reshuffling in the coming days, the political jobbers currently strutting the turf and fretting their hours on dead wishes, should, at least, let Gbajabiamila breathe? Urges Nigerians Not to Participate in the Protest Accuses Organisers for Non-Disclosure of Financial Inducement by Divisive Politician. The Amalgamated Civil Society Organizations of Nigeria (ACN) has strongly condemned the planned October 1st protest, accusing its organizers of receiving funding from a notorious former North West Governor to destabilize the country. Comrade Gbenga Ashiru Abiodun, National President of ACN, in a press statement issued to newsmen on Monday, said, "We urge Nigerians not to participate in this protest, as it is driven by a hidden agenda to undermine the government. The organizers have collected huge sums of money from a divisive North West Governor for the purpose of purveying their hidden agenda to unsuspecting Nigerian citizens." Abiodun emphasized that the protest's primary aim is to cause chaos and anarchy, taking advantage of the country's current economic challenges. "This protest is not about addressing the country's problems but about advancing the interests of desperate politicians," he added. The ACN criticized the organizers for failing to disclose their financial backing, alleging that they have received foreign funding under the guise of protecting democracy and free speech. "We have received critical actionable intelligence on the foreign funding given to some select NGOs," Abiodun revealed. Abiodun expressed concern that the protest would only worsen the country's economic situation and cause unnecessary harm to citizens. "Nigerians are going through a lot of hardship due to hunger and unusual hyper-inflation, but participating in a protest funded by a divisive politician is not the solution," he said. Instead, Abiodun advocated for constructive dialogue with the government to address economic challenges. "We must learn from past experiences and avoid actions that undermine our democracy," he emphasized. The ACN also criticized local rice producers and essential commodity traders for arbitrarily increasing prices of goods and services, exacerbating the country's economic woes. "They are solely responsible for the hardship, hunger, and hoarding of foodstuff in our country," Abiodun stated. Abiodun praised political leaders who have patiently reclaimed their respective states through democratic principles, citing Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Governor Isa Yuguda, Governor Aliyu Magatakarda Wammako, Senator Ahmed Sani Yerima, Governor Dauda Lawal, Governor Seyi Makinde, and Dr. Alex Otti as examples. The ACN warned that relevant security agencies must deal with the shadowy characters involved in the protest, including those hiding under the guise of mediators, lawyers, and interlopers. "Anyone hiding behind transactional protest to cause breakdown of law and order is a security risk," Abiodun said. Abiodun declared that the ACN will not be a party to the subterranean plot by politicians masquerading as champions of democratic ethos. "We have resolved to declare organizers of the planned protest persona non grata for collecting money from politicians without disclosing such transactions to other stakeholders," he announced. The ACN urged Nigerians to resist the protest and instead advocate for peaceful and democratic means of addressing grievances. "Let us call a spade a spade for once. The sponsors of the protest should blame themselves for the backlash and whatever ugly outcome that may likely transpire during their protest," Abiodun concluded. Comrade Yakubu Abdullahi, General Secretary of ACN, echoed Abiodun's sentiments, emphasizing the need for Nigerians to unite against divisive forces. "We must reject this protest and work towards a united and prosperous Nigeria," Abdullahi said. Furthermore, the ACN emphasized that the planned protest is a deliberate attempt to destabilize the country, and Nigerians must be vigilant. "We will not allow desperate politicians to hijack our democracy," Abiodun warned. The ACN called on all patriotic Nigerians to join forces in rejecting the protest and promoting peace and stability. "We must prioritize the interest of our country over personal interests," Abiodun urged. In conclusion, the ACN reaffirmed its commitment to promoting democratic values and rejecting any attempt to undermine the country's stability.

....EXPOSES PLOT TO UNDERMINE LEADERSHIP In a strong-worded statement, the Civil Society Network for Good Governance (CSNGG), has condemned ongoing efforts to destabilize Nigerian football through the orchestrated removal of Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, General Secretary of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). This comes at a critical moment for Nigerian football as the country faces crucial AFCON and World Cup qualifiers. The National President of the CSNGG, Barr. Kamal Adefila, described the plot as "a deliberate attempt by faceless individuals to discredit the leadership of Nigerian football and sow discord within the NFF." According to him, "these actions are detrimental to the progress of Nigerian football, and we will not stand by while opportunists try to hijack the administration of our national sports." Adefila noted that "the administration of football in Nigeria under the pragmatic leadership of President Ibrahim Musa Gusau with Dr. Mohammed Sanusi as General Secretary has not only prioritized stability but also introduced reforms that align with international best practices." He listed several achievements under the current NFF leadership, including the modernization of administrative processes, the promotion of transparency, and significant strides in developing grassroots football and elevating Nigeria's international presence in the sport. The Civil Society Network also called on all genuine stakeholders to work together toward preserving stability in Nigerian football. “At this juncture, when Nigeria is preparing to prosecute important AFCON and World Cup qualifiers, unity and collaboration are more important than ever. We urge all stakeholders to channel their energy toward supporting the team and ensuring success in these campaigns," Adefila emphasized. The organization further warned those behind the plot to remove Dr. Sanusi to desist or risk being publicly named. "We are aware of the faceless interests driving this ploy, and let it be clear that we will not hesitate to expose them if they continue with their malicious campaign," Adefila stated. He also called on Nigerians to disregard the falsehoods being peddled against Dr. Sanusi, stating that "these baseless attacks are nothing more than an attempt to discredit a man who has dedicated years to improving Nigerian football." Adefila reiterated that while the NFF is not without its challenges, the current leadership under Dr. Sanusi remains capable and committed to addressing these issues and moving Nigerian football forward. The CSNGG also reminded those seeking to destabilize the NFF that the federation's congresses are not political battlegrounds. "The NFF congresses are platforms for synthesizing ideas and plans for the development of Nigerian football, not arenas for political manipulation or personal gain," Adefila cautioned. As Nigeria prepares for its upcoming football engagements, the CSNGG urged all stakeholders to rally behind the NFF leadership and support efforts to improve the country's football sector. "We must remain focused on the larger goal—bringing back the glory of Nigerian football, and this cannot be achieved through division and infighting," Adefila concluded.

Alhaji Abubakar Suleiman Mayaki, CEO of MYK Land and Properties Ltd, has been cleared of any involvement in the murder of Idowu Keshinro, a case that has garnered significant public interest. An investigation by the Homicide section of the Federal Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) in Abuja concluded that there was no evidence linking Mayaki to Keshinro's death. Initial allegations hinted at a conspiracy involving local police officials, including Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Bose Owonipa and Chike Thankgod, but the FCID’s findings exonerated Mayaki. The investigation revealed minimal evidence against him, resulting in his unconditional bail. The FCID’s legal department asserted that the allegations were baseless, raising questions about the motives behind the claims against Mayaki. This case has highlighted concerns over potential corruption within the Nigerian police force. As the investigation unfolds, the public is eager for further updates in this complex situation, which reflects ongoing challenges within the Nigerian justice system. Currently, Mayaki faces charges in a magistrate court in Ogba due to a fraudulent duplicate of the case file that was improperly sent to the Lagos DPP, who was unaware of the FCID's extensive work that questioned the basis for the defendant's incarceration. Attention is also being drawn to claims that the alleged conspirator openly boasted in the court about using his wealth to influence the Lagos judiciary, similar to his actions at the FCID in Abuja. Lastly call on the Inspector General of Police, Deputy Inspector General of Police ( Fcid) and the Lagos State Commissioner of Police and Department of Public prosecution to ensure thorough investigation and be wary of the antics of mischievous people

…Calls for Lokpobiri, Kyari Sack In a bold move, the Empowerment for Unemployed Youth Initiative (EUYI) has rejected the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command's plea to cancel its planned protest against the recent petrol price hike. The group, which represents vulnerable Nigerians, insists that the protest will go ahead as scheduled on Thursday, September 19, 2024, despite the Police Command's citation of a court order banning protests in Abuja. "We will not be silenced or intimidated," EUYI National Coordinator, Comrade Danesi Momoh Prince, declared. "The suffering of our people demands urgent action, and we will take our destinies into our hands." EUYI's protest targets the Minister of State for Petroleum, Heineken Lokpobiri, and the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari, whom they accuse of failing to address the petrol scarcity and exorbitant pricing. "The duo must go," EUYI National Secretary, Igwe Ude-Umanta, emphasized. "We demand a thorough cleansing of the petroleum sector to end the unnecessary suffering of Nigerians." The group has mobilized its members and allies to converge on the NNPCL Towers, setting the stage for a potential showdown with security forces. EUYI attributes the increasing cases of suicide among Nigerians to the unbearable economic conditions. "A court order cannot feed our families or put fuel in our tanks," Comrade Prince said. "We will not be deterred by threats or intimidation." The group added. |
The Real Life International Foundation (DERLIF) and stakeholders gathered on Monday for the annual "Podium for Social Justice” event, addressing pressing national social justice issues. The conference aimed to facilitate discussions and propose solutions to Nigeria’s societal challenges. In his keynote address, Convener and Director, Ambassador Felix Akpoi, emphasized the platform’s goal: “Enforcing social justice in our immediate society.”He highlighted DERLIF’s motto, “Value for Human Life,” and its reform efforts in prisons, education, gender equality, and religious tolerance. “The Foundation has been actively involved in promoting social justice, particularly in prisons. We have visited several prisons, including Kuje, Suleja, and Keffi, to provide support and advocate for reform,” Ambassador Akpoi said. “Our recent book, ‘The Innocent Prisoner,’ sheds light on the plight of wrongly convicted individuals and underscores the need for prison reform.” Ambassador Akpoi stressed the need to review the Prison Act, citing the importance of decongesting prisons. He commended the Nigerian Police and correctional facilities for improvements but noted lingering trust and corruption issues. Nigerian Correctional Service Controller General Haliru Nababa, represented by DCG Abolade Benson, lamented the stigmatisation and societal rejection forcing freed inmates to return to facilities. “The society is not ready to accept them, and this hinders their reintegration,” Nababa said. “We urge Nigerians to embrace ex-convicts and provide opportunities for their rehabilitation.” Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, represented by ACP Tino Dangana, appealed for understanding, emphasizing the police’s role in arresting and charging suspects. “We have improved in protecting suspects’ rights, but there is still a disconnect between law enforcement and the judiciary. The maximum duration a court can grant the police to remand a suspect is two weeks. We urge the public to desist from hounding our men to undertake the task of the court.” Egbetokun said. President Bola Tinubu and Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo were praised for reviewing the feeding allowance of inmates nationwide to N1,250 per day. “This development demonstrates the government’s commitment to improving the lives of inmates and promoting social justice,” Ambassador Akpoi said. Akpoi emphasized the need for collective action to address social justice issues. “We must work together to create a just and equitable society. We urge Nigerians to join us in this quest for social justice,” he said. The event, held at the NAF Conference Center in Abuja, brought together dignitaries, including, Ambassador of Belgium, representative of the Nigerian Correctional Service, inspector General of Police respectively, other esteemed stakeholders The “Podium for Social Justice” event serves as a catalyst for meaningful discussions and sustainable solutions to Nigeria’s social challenges. DERLIF remains committed to promoting social justice and advocating for reform.

…Stressed the importance of genetic diversity in agriculture …Advocate for improved genetic reference libraries Experts in the agricultural sector on Monday, emphasized the need for harmonization of gene banks in Nigeria to enhance the country’s agricultural productivity. The call was made at the opening of a 4-day Breeders Country Team and Centralized Function Expert Meeting, organized by the National Agricultural Seeds Council (NASC) in collaboration with the Nigerian Plants Variety Protection Office (NPVPO) amongst other partners. The meeting aimed to review the first wave results of the Institutionalizing Monitoring of Crop Variety Adoption using Genotyping (IMAGE) project, which seeks to improve crop productivity and enhance genetic diversity in Nigeria. Speaking to newsmen, Dr. Ishiak Khalid, Acting Director-General of NASC, stressed the importance of harmonizing gene banks to support the country’s agricultural development. He said; “Harnessing the potential of our genetic resources requires a coordinated approach. By harmonizing our gene banks, we can ensure that our research institutions are working together to develop improved crop varieties that meet the needs of our farmers.” Dr. Khalid encouraged research institutions to prioritize research on improved seed varieties, highlighting its impact on farmer yields. He praised plant breeders and crop experts for their achievements, stating that their expertise and commitment have been instrumental in driving agricultural progress.” Also speaking, Prof. Lucky Omoigui, Seed System Specialist from the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), stressed the crucial role of quality seeds in boosting crop productivity. "Quality seeds are the backbone of productive agriculture, and to increase crop yields, we must ensure farmers receive seeds with the right genetic material. This requires rigorous testing and verification against reference materials." Omogui further emphasized the importance of maintaining robust seed banks. he said "A well-managed seed bank is vital for preserving genetic diversity and ensuring seed quality. Continuous use of seeds without replenishment from reserves leads to quality degradation." Meanwhile Dr. Folarin Sunday Okelola, Acting Registrar of the Nigerian Plant Variety Protection Office (NPVPO), presenting a paper titled “Crop Survey Results: Nigerian Cassava, Revised Genotyped Crop Survey based on the Cluster Pipeline Bioinformatics Pipeline.” reiterated that the essence of the meeting is to adopt and advise farmers on effective seed systems. Okelola urged stakeholders to consider opportunities for improving access to quality seeds, maintaining seed purity, enhancing genetic reference libraries, and conducting analysis to characterize genetic entities and unidentified samples According to him, ongoing and regular analysis based on growers’ reports and genetic features will help understand what farmers are planting. He however, encouraged research institutions to conduct further studies to comprehend genotyping and the clustering pipeline, which can be effectively applied in dynamic seed systems with uncontrolled variation in outcrossing crops, where genetically diverse Open-Pollinated Varieties (OPVs) predominate.

•Commences training for farmers, seed companies, others In a bold move to transform Nigeria's agricultural landscape, the National Agricultural Seeds Council (NASC), has launched a cutting-edge Seed Information Management Portal. This innovative digital solution promises to revolutionize the seed sector, enhancing efficiency, transparency, and productivity for farmers, seed companies, and regulatory bodies. The development came to light at a recent capacity-building workshop held n Abuja, convened by the council to train key stakeholders on its operationalization and management. The event tagged “Training on the Operationalization and Management of the NASC Seed Information Management Portal (NSIMP)”, brought together about 70 participants, comprising seed industry professionals, companies, seed council staffs, and farmers from different states and zones, to be preempted, trained to explore the portal's vast potential. Streamlining Seed Sector Operations, Dr. Ishiak Khalid, NASC's Director General, represented by Towolawi Oluwole, Director of Seed Information, Data Management, and Capacity Building. emphasized the portal's critical role in managing the council's information system. "The portal enables us to collate, and coordinate data from partners, agencies, seed companies, and farmers, providing valuable insights for more informed and harmonized decision-making," he explained. The portal's integrated platform harmonizes disparate data sources, including seed trackers, codex, and other systems. This centralized approach facilitates real-time feedback from stakeholders, empowering the Seed Council to track industry trends, identify challenges, and respond effectively, according to Oluwole. Also, Dr. Folarin Sunday Okelola, Ag Registrar of Plant Variety Protection (PVP) and Project Manager for the Agra grant, underscored the workshop's significance. He said; "Our goal is to build capacity for planning and coordinating the seed system, ensuring we meet Nigeria's seed demand and harmonizing the whole process." “To effectively plan and coordinate our seed sector activities, we require accurate and timely data. This necessitates the integration of technology and electronic systems to enhance our traditional information gathering methods. “Today, we proudly putting out our Seed Information Management Portal, a comprehensive platform that consolidates our existing tools, including the Seed Tracker and Seed Codex, into a single, user-friendly management information system. “This innovative portal, accessible via web or Android, enables us to reach all stakeholders, regardless of category, and provides a streamlined approach to seed sector management.” He added. The NASC Seed Portal is designed to benefit all stakeholders ranging from farmers, granting them an access to quality seeds, improved crop yields, and enhanced livelihoods, seed companies, ensuring efficient production, distribution, and sales tracking, regulatory bodies through an enhanced oversight, real-time monitoring, and informed decision-making. By integrating comprehensive data management, analytics, and support tools, the portal aligns with the Critical Components of a Functional Seed System, as defined by CESSA. This ensures quality, accessibility, and sustainability in agricultural sector. The Citizens Watch Advocacy Initiative (CWAI), a civil society and pressure group, has lauded the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for its innovative Agro-Rangers and Mining Marshals initiatives. These programs aim to boost Nigeria's food security, protect farmers, and secure the country's mining sector. The Agro-Rangers Initiative, spearheaded by NSCDC Commandant-General Dr. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, has deployed over 1,000 officers to safeguard farmers and their farmlands across the country, particularly in the northern states. This move has enabled farmers to cultivate and harvest their crops without fear of attacks from bandits and other criminal elements. CWAI Executive Secretary Omoba Kenneth Aigbegbele praised the NSCDC for its efforts, stating that the initiative has reduced insecurity in farming communities and increased food production. "The Agro-Rangers have been instrumental in mediating conflicts between farmers and herders, preventing malicious destruction of farmlands, and ensuring the safety of agricultural investments." In addition to the Agro-Rangers, the NSCDC has also launched the Mining Marshals program to combat illegal mining and promote economic growth. The Federal Government recently deployed an additional 350 marshals to enhance the operational effectiveness of the squad. Since the inauguration of the marshals, over 200 illegal mining suspects have been arrested, with 135 prosecutions and confiscation of illegally mined resources. CWAI commended the NSCDC for its commitment to reforming the mining sector and generating revenue for the country. The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Mr. Dele Alake, emphasized the importance of the Mining Marshals in sanitizing the sector and boosting investors' confidence. "The deployment of additional operatives will intensify efforts against illegal miners nationwide and ensure the country reaps the full benefits of its solid minerals for economic development." The group stated that, Dr. Audi stressed the need for continuous training and deployments to ensure comprehensive coverage of the country's vast mining areas. according to him "The NSCDC will not rest until the country is completely free from any form of insecurity." However, CWAI endorsed the initiatives, urging the Federal Government to provide adequate funding for training, capacity development, and manpower development of the Agro-Rangers and Mining Marshals. "The populist approach of these initiatives will assist in fishing out hoodlums, rustlers, and bandits, promoting peaceful co-existence and economic growth," Aigbegbele said. The Agro-Rangers Initiative has been particularly effective in states plagued by banditry and insecurity, such as Benue and Borno. Farmers in these areas can now access their farmlands with confidence, thanks to the protection provided by the Agro-Rangers. CWAI also noted that NSCDC's collaboration with international organizations has bolstered efforts to safeguard agro-allied investments and boost the mining sector. The organization pledged to support the NSCDC in its efforts to tackle bandits, herders, and illegal miners, promoting a safe and secure environment for all. "NSCDC's initiatives align with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at diversifying the economy and promoting economic growth," Aigbegbele said.

Nigeria, Africa's most populous country, has been grappling with significant socioeconomic challenges that affect a broad spectrum of its citizens. The hardships stem from multiple factors, including economic instability, high unemployment rates, inflation, corruption, and inadequate infrastructure. These issues have created a cycle of poverty and frustration among the populace. Key Issues Contributing to Hardship Economic Instability: Inflation: Nigeria has been experiencing persistent inflation, leading to a sharp increase in the cost of living. Essentials like food, fuel, and healthcare have become more expensive, straining household budgets. Currency Devaluation: The Nigerian Naira has weakened against major foreign currencies, making imports more costly and increasing the burden on consumers. High Unemployment Rates: With a large youth population, the lack of job opportunities is a critical issue. Many young Nigerians are either unemployed or underemployed, leading to widespread frustration and a sense of hopelessness. Insecurity: Terrorism and Insurgency: Regions like the Northeast have been plagued by Boko Haram insurgency, leading to loss of lives, displacement, and economic disruption. Banditry and Kidnappings: Other parts of the country, particularly in the Northwest and Southeast, face challenges from bandits and kidnappers, which has further destabilized communities and discouraged investment. Corruption: Mismanagement of Resources: Corruption at various levels of government has led to the misallocation and embezzlement of public funds, hindering development projects and essential services. Lack of Transparency and Accountability: The absence of effective checks and balances has allowed corrupt practices to flourish, exacerbating economic inequalities. Infrastructure Deficit: Poor Roads and Transportation: Inadequate road networks and poor transportation infrastructure have hampered economic activities and increased the cost of doing business. Electricity Shortages: Persistent power outages and an unreliable electricity supply have stifled industrial growth and increased operational costs for businesses. Health and Education: The healthcare system is underfunded and overwhelmed, while the education sector suffers from poor funding, inadequate facilities, and low-quality teaching. Social Inequality: Wealth Disparity: A significant gap exists between the wealthy and the poor, with a small elite controlling much of the country's resources while a large portion of the population lives in poverty. Gender Inequality: Women in Nigeria often face systemic barriers in accessing education, healthcare, and economic opportunities, contributing to broader social inequalities. Way Out: Potential Solutions Economic Reforms: Diversification: Nigeria's economy is heavily reliant on oil. Diversifying into agriculture, manufacturing, and technology can create jobs and reduce vulnerability to global oil price fluctuations. Support for SMEs: Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are the backbone of any economy. Providing access to finance, reducing regulatory burdens, and offering technical support can help these businesses thrive. Monetary Policies: Implementing policies that stabilize the currency and control inflation is crucial to restoring purchasing power and economic stability. Improving Security Strengthening Security Forces: Investing in training, equipment, and intelligence for the police and military can help combat terrorism, banditry, and kidnappings more effectively. Community Policing: Engaging local communities in security efforts can improve trust and cooperation, leading to better crime prevention and resolution. Fighting Corruption: Institutional Reforms: Strengthening institutions like the judiciary, anti-corruption agencies, and law enforcement can enhance transparency and accountability. Public Awareness and Engagement: Educating the public about the impact of corruption and encouraging citizen participation in governance can help hold leaders accountable. Infrastructure Development Public-Private Partnerships (PPP): Collaborating with the private sector to fund and manage infrastructure projects can accelerate development in areas like transportation, energy, and telecommunications. Renewable Energy Investment: Investing in solar, wind, and hydroelectric power can help address the electricity deficit and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. Social Welfare Programs Education and Skill Development: Expanding access to quality education and vocational training can empower the youth and reduce unemployment. Healthcare Access: Improving healthcare infrastructure, particularly in rural areas, and implementing universal health coverage can enhance the quality of life. Poverty Alleviation Programs: Direct cash transfers, food security programs, and affordable housing initiatives can provide immediate relief to those most affected by poverty. Promoting Social Equity Gender Equality Initiatives: Ensuring equal access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities for women can foster a more inclusive society. Reducing Wealth Disparity: Progressive taxation, social safety nets, and fair wage policies can help bridge the gap between the rich and the poor. Conclusion Addressing the hardships in Nigeria requires a multi-faceted approach that involves economic reform, infrastructure development, security enhancement, anti-corruption measures, and social welfare programs. While these challenges are significant, with concerted efforts from the government, private sector, and civil society, Nigeria can create a more stable and prosperous future for its citizens.
