Pope Francis sets his own style on the papacy

Sending a message of radical humility Latin America’s first pope, Francis 1 has begun his reign at the Vatican.

The 76-year-old is regarded as a conservative, but is also seen as a potential force for reform.

Yesterday wearing simple black shoes and an ordinary wrist watch to his first Mass as pontiff,

he issued a warning to cardinals in the Sistine chapel.
We can walk all we want, we can build many things,
but if we don’t proclaim Jesus Christ, something is wrong.
We would end up a compassionate NGO.

Today Pope Francis will meet all the cardinals, including those aged over 80 who did not take part in the conclave.

Having on day one rejected some of the trimmings of office, he has instructed them to wear plain black cassocks and not the red with white lace surplices.

That will be a spoiler alert

however, it is about God appearing to Joan and reminds her that she promised to do anything he wanted if he would let her brother survive a car crash that left him a paraplegic.

God appeared to her in the form of various people including small children, teenage boys, elderly ladies, transients, or passersby.

No specific mention of any "true" religion is ever made, and God quotes Bob Dylan, Emily Dickinson and the Beatles rather than any scripture or verses.

In one episode (i.e. in 'Touch Move'), God is portrayed with a very human personality, He tells Joan that He has to send her "down there", and laughs when she becomes worried He means Hell, when He meant the school basement.

In another episode, God hands Joan a book from a store they have just left. When Joan accuses him of stealing, He remarks "Well, technically everything's mine".

#Some memorable God quotes from the series

GOD: 'Good is relative. Beauty's relative. Everything's relative. Except for me. I'm absolute.'

GOD: 'People manage to believe in me, even though they have no idea what I am; they trust me even in the silence.'

GOD: 'Some suicides are motivated by rage. At another human being or the universe… or me.
Others come from a deep sadness—suicide seems the only way of stopping the pain. …
And then there are those who do not end their mortal lives, but still, they stop living. Which is also a kind of suicide.”'

Uyi Iredia: The problem I find here is that your post ignores the problem of natural evil. It is instead shifting the focus to evil caused due to human shortcomings eg poor distribution of goods and services, lying etc. Diseases, famine, tornadoes and typhoons won't disappear if there was no indifference. These are evils that are whether you admit it or not are the creation of God. The presence of evil is of serious concern if God is said to be all-good and loving. In light of all I've said I opine Jesus did not answer the question of evil. He beat around it.

@gl450

What a classic way to open and drop a poster's first topic.

Quite right, that it is a no brainer, that one doesn't have to be a genius to prosper, as, all it takes to prosper, is an idea from God

and this God faithfully confirmed, when He dished out another witty idea and kept the trend going with Jacob; Isaac's son.

Now, sometimes, for the dearth of forthcoming witty ideas,

there is the slight niggling worry at the back of the mind,

that maybe the lack of trickling ideas is due to the fact that, sky over the head, is like brass and the ground beneath iron

What is comforting though, is that, overcoming a drought of witty ideas is good and sweet success

and having that one idea from God is like finding the holy grail

"I will go before thee,
and make the crooked places straight:
I will break in pieces the gates of brass,
and cut in sunder the bars of iron
" - Isaiah 45:2 KJV

Uyi Iredia: Hold on a minute ! I have not said I'm an atheist. I'm in a questioning state while nominally remaining a Christian.

That said I think the book 'Common Sense' by Jean Meslier did the trick.

His short simple points made me reconsider my beliefs.
Jean Meslier (15 June 1664 – 17 June 1729) was a French Catholic priest who was discovered, upon his death, to have written a book-length philosophical essay promoting atheism. Described by the author as his "testament" to his parishioners, the text denounces all religion

Jean Meslier was born in Mazerny in the Ardennes. He began learning Latin from a neighborhood priest in 1678 and eventually joined the seminary; he later claimed, in the Author's Preface to his Testament, this was done to please his parents. At the end of his studies, he took Holy Orders and, on 7 January 1689, became priest at Étrépigny, in Champagne.

One public disagreement with a local nobleman aside, Meslier was to all appearances generally unremarkable, and he performed his office without complaint or problem for 40 years. He lived like a pauper, and every penny left over was donated to the poor.

When Meslier died, there were found in his house three copies of a 633-page octavo manuscript in which the village curate denounces organized religion as "but a castle in the air" and theology as "but ignorance of natural causes reduced to a system"

Title: Superstition In All Ages (1732) Common Sense

Queen fights for gay rights:

and hints that if Kate DOES have a girl,
that means equal rights to the throne too

First time Her Majesty has signalled support for gay rights in 61-year reign
Also promotes 'empowerment' of women in drive to boost human rights
Insiders say her decision to highlight the event is a 'watershed' moment

By Simon Walters

PUBLISHED: 22:05, 9 March 2013 | UPDATED: 22:58, 9 March 2013

The Queen will tomorrow back an historic pledge to promote gay rights and ‘gender equality’ in one of the most controversial acts of her reign.

In a live television broadcast, she will sign a new charter designed to stamp out discrimination against homosexual people and promote the ‘empowerment’ of women
– a key part of a new drive to boost human rights and living standards across the Commonwealth.

In her first public appearance since she had hospital treatment for a stomach bug, the Queen will sign the new Commonwealth Charter and make a speech explaining her passionate commitment to it.

Insiders say her decision to highlight the event is a ‘watershed’ moment – the first time she has clearly signalled her support for gay rights in her 61-year reign.

The charter, dubbed a ‘21st Century Commonwealth Magna Carta’ declares: ‘We are implacably opposed to all forms of discrimination, whether rooted in gender, race, colour, creed, political belief or other grounds.’

The ‘other grounds’ is intended to refer to sexuality – but specific reference to ‘gays and lesbians’ was omitted in deference to Commonwealth countries with draconian anti-gay laws
.

Apologies are not necessary. I like to keep the discussion about principles, not persons.

I was merely trying to forestall that happening. The integrity of my posts and my position preclude my being "put on the spot" in this instance.

The response was clear complete and direct. I'll break it down into bite-sized chunks to aid digestion;

I first made it clear that my response would not hinge on kinship.

I then went on to outline my two possible responses which would be based on Christian belief - or not as it were.

Hope the above was easily understood. Happy to break it down further if it helps.

I then posed two questions of my own, which you point blank ignored. Even though I was happy to take simple yes/no answers?

Happy to explore and discuss freely and be enlightened by anyone at anytime.

So, no halo, not H-T-T, not S-R, not S-I. Just happy to state my position without imposing it on others.

however, please bear with me further and indulge me a bit more with a hypothetical scenario of your child, with the earlier question rephrased

"Dad, am gay, I've turned out gay and coming out gay"

PS: I have no qualms answering your questions. I gave reasons for the delayed reply. This isn't about tit for tat brother (i.e. ferreting out a website with opposing views) Trust me I have no ulterior motive or have gay inclinations or dispositions

PS: I'll gladly would go over your "websites", since am a fast and voracious reader

PS: Asking that "personal" question was crucial. It wasn't asked out of malice.

I have been gracious all the way with you though I know this is a biblical hot potato and people hold strong dogmatic views

This is why I said let's take the halo, the H-T-T, the S-R and S-I off etc etc for a defining moment

I also at a later point sought to know about your position concerning the errancy of bible translation(s)

truthislight: this is nothing less than an abused of this prophesy

That was God telling the future and not that he was the slave master.

Yahweh wanted to create a nation different from all the nations existing then.

This ^ so that yahweh will form an entirely new nation, a nation unadultrated by pegan worship of the surrounding nations.

The nation of Israel had a fresh start when it was closed to the time of sending the massaiah.

What is wrong in yahweh telling the future?

Did you read there that he commanded the egyptians to enslave the jews?

So, all the nations on planet earth that ever carried out slavery were instructed by yahweh to do so right?

Yes, he sent the nation of Israel to multiply in a foreign land so that he can give them a spontaneous start and so what?

Do you want us to start listing all things that yahweh foretold their occurrence here now? That he foretold it, does it means he is the one who instructed that they be enslave right?

Well, that was a prophesy, twist it as you like, but i know he also said this in that same Genesis chapter 15:

"And also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge: and afterward shall they come out with great substance." (Genesis 15:14).
...................

Maybe, yahweh was judging his own action and instructions.

You only saw verses 13. Ah!, it is 13 that will serve your ulterion motive.

Smh for you.

debosky: You do not have to go back to the 'simplicity' of the apostles - as long as the souls have a relationship with Christ, the 'structure' is of secondary importance.

Even if you don't like the structure, what type of Christians are being produced? That is the ultimate test.
You forgot your gallivanting here, to police 'simplicity' grin

debosky: Maybe your comprehension skills are deficient - lambasting of structures means simply that - it's focused on structures.

Reminding of individual responsibilities is a separate matter.
lambasting

Christianity EtcRe: Corporate Church Structure and the true role of a Pastor by amdatam: 2:34am On Mar 08, 2013
debosky:
It shouldn't beggar belief - the central focus of Christianity is on the salvation of the soul and not on disagreements structures which, in many (but not all) cases is a matter of taste/personal preference.

My reference to Annanias and Sapphira was to further reinforce that point - individual greed does not need a specific structure to manifest.

Do you now claim to be a mind reader? cheesy The point is very simple - it was a response to a specific post and can be summarised thus: do not condemn individuals you know nothing about as merely 'occupying pews' simply because you don't like the 'structure' under which they fellowship together.

It's not naive in the least - 'lambasting' structures achieves nothing if individuals aren't reminded of their personal responsibility. No one will get to heaven and be excused on the basis of 'xyz led you to damnation'. Especially, since all you can do is 'lambast' - you don't have any power to stop those 'structures' you dislike from existing.

If you think it naive then, again, you are entitled to your opinion. smiley

Call it muzzling, call it deflating, call it whatsoever you wish - it remains the simple truth. Besides, I didn't realise that you were appointed to policing duties on this thread? If the OP didn't want any posts other than echoing his, he should've said so. He is free to reinforce his warning with fire and brimstone if he so chooses. smiley

You can suppose as you wish since I never made that assertion. Again, the inconvenient fact is, the more the sheep take responsibility for their own 'basic' enlightenment, the less susceptible they are to questionable examples.

I haven't sidelined the topic - I have simply offered my perspective, which you are free to ignore.

If you want a monologue or want to hear only your own voice, go and open a thread in the diary section.

Brother. smiley
Doing an Aaron or Hur next time, holding hands up so that hands remained steady till sunset is preferable. cool

As if lambasting doesn't mean criticising harshly and reminding of individual or personal responsibilities shocked shocked shocked

What are you like? Hmm? smiley - No discourtesy meant

Why a monologue?, when there is no I in team as Together Each Achieves More.
Christianity EtcRe: Biblical Interpretations On Homosexuality. by amdatam:
TV01: @amdatam

I have no problems answering your question and indeed, I will do so hereafter.

However my response should come as no surprise, as I have always been – and will happily recant where I have not – consistent in my worldview and approach.

I’m pretty sure that those that are familiar with my views/posting history would be able to give a fair approximation of my response here. I didn’t want this to get personal.

I'd rather we focus on the scriptural narrative and a considered response to situations.

If anyone I know or is related to me comes out “as gay”, my response would be as if they were a complete stranger – i.e., the same.

For those that do not believe, I would not seek to impose my worldview on them. I shall continue to love and care for them as before, which affection was never based on sexual practice, but on kinship
. Am I a hypocrite?

Is fornication, adultery and the like unknown amongst my kindred? What of those things I am not even aware of?

For those that do, I would point out that my reading of scripture demands abstinence from secs outside the marital relationship, which is between 1 man and 1 woman. Again, no forced imposition of my views and if they wanted us to discuss, study and pray about the issue, I would willingly do so.

Now let me ask you a few questions, which I trust you will afford me like consideration and respond to. Simple yes/no answers will suffice;

Would you be happy for a son of yours to live a homosexual lifestyle? Even in the type of relationship the site you referenced (yes I visited and yes I read some articles) terms “monogamous non-cultic permanent unions”.

Knowing the physical pathologies and psychological damage that will almost certainly result to some degree? Either forego having children, or have children that were not biologically his or his partners. And in any event not have the children’ natural mother play her rightful role in raising them.

Secondly, would you insist that the bible narrative suggests such unions are acceptable, blessed, equivalent to male/female unions and should be promulgated as such in church and in the wider society, with enforcement by legislative decree if required?

Happy to discuss anything from the site referenced or any other related issue.

@TV01

Thank you for making attempts to answer the question.

Sorry, if you felt being put on the spot

I suppose "If anyone I know or is related to me comes out “as gay”, my response would be as if they were a complete stranger – i.e., the same is or was your answer if sibling(s) or child(ren) was gay

Whatever this ". . . my response would be as if they were a complete stranger. i.e. the same" means. You didn't in no uncertain terms give a clear and direct answer sad sad sad

Well, it was all about exploring your "Adam where art thou" factor; a bit of self discovery and/or self disclosure dabbling, as it were

Trust you read and understood from a previous post, the italics snippet repeated below

"Let's take off the halo for a moment and step aside the holier-than-thou self righteous indignation . . .

to without prejudice or a biased mindset, go through these links, selected from the plethora of information off the main web portal to ponder and share thoughts
"

I am not in a rush for you to clinically and meticulously go through the link articles.

even if it'll take a year to devour, I am patient and can wait until ALL the linked articles, if not the entire site is read

I will be very pleased to answer yours question(s) after you have carefully and completely read through all the links

and when you are done, it would be a bonus and nice to know where you stand concerning the errancies of bible translations before you pose, if any, more questions
Christianity EtcRe: Biblical Interpretations On Homosexuality. by amdatam:
TV01: The OP was a ruse. It was posted in an attempt to marry - excuse the pun- the biblical narrative regards slavery and homosexual practice and suggest that as slavery had ultimately been discontinued, the prohibitions against homosexual acts should likewise be considered outdated.

Even as the OP' premise was doomed to fail, it was actually designed to plant the seed of doubt and and raise questions, ultimately making people more receptive to and moving further along the path of acceptance of homosexual acts. Fail
!

This was an obvious false dialectic, so I chose not to take the bait.

It would have been infinitely more honest to parallel it with other prohibited sex acts such as incest or bestiality and see if parallels could be drawn there. Slavery was a man made condition from which the bible immediately gave succour and ultimately eradicated. As noted it was nothing like, nor did it justify the trans Atlantic slave trade.

People are happy to piggy back off, and at once belittle the historical suffering of Afro-Americans, in both slavery and the fight for civil rights, in order to push this abominable behaviour. Doubly repugnant

Strangely enough it is the AA that is suffering most from sexual licentiousness and the erosion of the moral fabric in society. It's estimated that 60% of pregnancies (for AA'in New York city) are aborted. 60% of kids are born out of wedlock and more than 1 in two marriages end in divorce - do the math. If such trends persist, soon there will be very few AA families and little or no AA community - not substantively anyway.

God have mercy on us all

The Israelites were in Egypt, enslaved, about the same time, the African-Americans were (i.e. 400+ years)

God used an existing irregularity, took advantage of it when the Israelites were enslaved.

Recall God warned Abraham in advance of the slavery . . .

Why allow or permit the Israelites enslaving? Hmm. smiley smiley smiley

SMH, God, hallowed be thy name, doesn't cease to amaze me. He is full of surprises, techniques and works in mysterious ways

Then the LORD said to him,
"Know for certain that your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own,
and they will be enslaved and mistreated four hundred years
".
- Genesis 15:13

"Christians" perpetrated the trans Atlantic slave trade or django unchained and dug in heels to perpetuate a highly unpleasant or distasteful trade.

"Christians" justified the practice based on bible and strongly resisted, fought with sweat and/or blood, fiercely opposing the move of other Christians (i.e. the abolitionists) to discontinue the discrimination and cruel practice.

SMH, My dear brother, you err brother, you erred big time with a few embarrassing boo-boos . . .

Hmm. Seems the erring was nothing other than unfounding paranoia

By the way, you don't really believe that "Slavery . . . ultimately eradicated". Hmm?

True, slavery is a man made condition or invention

and true, God like every other thing misused by man worked around, managed and operated it with regulations (e.g. such as slaves offered freedom after seven years of service etc)

that is besides a point because really, the point or fact is, slavery is not eradicated

Slavery though it's appearance, sound, taste or smell has changed, it is very much still around

Allow me to introduce, Private Enterprise; the 21st century, new face of Slavery

Sweatshops, 9-5 5 days a week toiling etc etc . . . smiley
