When a loan becomes due and the borrower pays it bank, the loan company does not just keep the money in it's bank account they lend it to another borrower who needs it and
they earn interest on it.

Therefore if your loan is due and you fail to pay it back what it means is that you are denying the loan company an opportunity to earn interest on that money that is the reason they charge you a penalty so as to compensate for the interest income they are loosing while their money is tied up with you
