Business / Dele Momodu Writes Open Letter: Another Desperate Memo To President Buhari by Andema(m): 12:04pm On Apr 12, 2016 |
Your Excellency, Assalam Alaikum. It has been over six months since you graciously invited me to your office in Abuja. I must note once again that I was truly honoured and humbled by our one-on-one meeting. We spoke and interacted like two old buddies. What was more, I was all alone with you without a third party in the room. We spoke candidly and cracked jokes freely. I remember presenting you with an advance copy of my forthcoming book and you even requested me to autograph it for you which I did with such pride and gratitude in me. We took loads of pictures before and after the meeting. I left you reassured in my belief that Nigeria is in safe hands. Sir, a lot has happened since that meeting took place. In fact, so much water has passed under the bridge. Let me take you down memory lane a bit. You started contesting the Presidential election as far back as 2003. For three consecutive times, you lost and it seemed all hope had evaporated. In 2011, we were co-contestants. I was driven to your house one night by Prince Lanre Tejuoso (now a Senator) who wanted me to tone down my criticism of you and opposition to your candidacy. I was totally disarmed by your humility and simplicity. You spoke softly and candidly. I felt you were too old to return to a post you left nearly 30 years ago but you were certain you still have so much in you to offer Nigeria. The Jonathan government that won the election at that time was ushered in with so much hope and promise. After that election, you said that you would never seek elective office again. After three arduous attempts, you must have felt it was all a bloody waste of time seeking an opportunity to rebuild an irredeemable country that seemed determined to be plunged into the abyss by those you were convinced did not mean well for the country. But the government that promised us fresh air soon lost its sail and floundered aimlessly. It wobbled and fumbled till it became obvious that something had to be done to avert a monumental catastrophe, the kind that you had foreseen. The situation became so bad that most of us were left with no choice but to see you as our only God-sent redeemer. This was how the stone previously and repeatedly rejected by the builders suddenly transfigured into the much needed cornerstone. Your most caustic critics soon became your ardent fanatics. We were hypnotised and mesmerised by your new look. You were repackaged as a reformed and born again democrat. We studiously ignored your military credentials and dictatorial proclivity. The young and old screamed your name from the rooftops. Many youths were ready to march for you and even die in the process. The last time we witnessed such a phenomenon was in 1993 when Chief Moshood Abiola contested and won the June 12 Presidential election which was later annulled by your former colleagues in the army. You and your political party enjoyed a whirlwind romance with Nigerians. The covenant was based on mutual trust and the hope that you had robust knowledge of Nigerian history as well as vast experience in governance. Your avowed integrity was the icing on the cake. We expected you to inspire us as a veritable example of honestypersonified. The election came and you won almost effortlessly. What mattered to us was for someone to liberate and remove us from the suffocating yoke of the PDP. You looked the perfect man to do it. Of course, to whom much is given much is expected. The burden of proof and expectation hung around your neck like an albatross. Soon, it seemed Nigerians thought and assumed that they had voted for a magician and so expected miracles to happen instantaneously. Trouble started very early. You inherited a government with plummeting revenues as the crude oil which greased the economy had suffered a massive collapse in price thus emasculating our country’s fortune and reserves. In addition, just before you returned to power the outgoing government had twice devalued the Naira leaving you with a currency that was set for free fall. In short the Government that you assumed control of was one which was like a disaster waiting to happen. Nigerians are generally impatient. We are action-packed and expect talismanic results. Unfortunately that has not happened and is not likely to happen soon no matter how hard you try. Sir, let me stop the introduction and go straight to the crux of the matter. While I do not want to sound like a doomsday prophet, I wish to alert you that there is fire on the mountain. This is not a subtle or covert attempt to create any panic. As a war General, I’m certain you have enough liver to withstand shock. But what I wish to say without mincing words is that we are yielding grounds to the enemies. Hard core supporters of your campaign like me are being derided by those who feel you are not living up to expectations. I know your handlers are likely to dismiss this as crying wolf where there is none but please, don’t listen to them. The situation is very critical and may even get out of hand if not carefully and delicately managed. You are going to be against corruption is wonderful, it pales into irrelevance and insignificance where hunger, deprivation, poverty, unemployment, poor education, ignorance, diseases, insecurity of lives and properties and other complications are concerned. Many people are going to hail you for arresting the thieves but the same people will soon turn around to attack you when they can’t feel the effect of the war positively on their bodies and souls. In case you are shielded from reading the comments making the rounds, let me inform you Sir, that people are already saying they would rather have corruption back, out of the desperation and suffering they are going through. And these are not the so-called looters but the ordinary Nigerians. Nothing illustrates this more poignantly than the video posted by Instablog9ja on Instagram and other social media platforms yesterday showing a man that looks like a taxi driver being interviewed. The man said he is so frustrated that he wants Nigeria to perish and all of us with it instantaneously. He wished that we all die simultaneously, at once and suddenly. The clip has already gone viral globally. Therefore, if anyone tells you only the elites are grumbling, they are telling you a blatant lie, Sir. The poor who were your best friends and biggest supporters appear totally confused, disillusioned and ostensibly tired of the endless excuses coming out of your Administrations spokespeople. I read somewhere that your foot- soldiers will soon embark on town hall meetings but I can assure you it won’t achieve anything. Why do you want to engage in campaign after election? Some expert scammers would just collect money for these jamborees. Nigerians want positive change and not a cacophony of lies bandied at stage managed, hurriedly assembled meetings populated by sycophants and glory hunters. They are ready to sacrifice but not when they think things are going from bad to worse. There is so much to do but without an agile economy nothing tangible can be achieved. The economy itself cannot be fixed in an atmosphere of permanent strife. One year will soon pass by next month and a second year shall begin. It is time to bite the bullet and take the economy head on. Forget about all distractions and concentrate on what really matters to the generality of our people. You will find out that once the economy is tamed all else will follow suit and the successes that you crave in your corruption crusade will start being manifested. I pray you will hearken to my humble advice and concentrate your energy on resurrecting the economy instead of embarking on a war of attrition. for complete go to www.nigerianbulletin.com/threads/dele-momodu-writes-open-letter-another-desperate-memo-to-president-buhari.200423/ |
Politics / 2016 Budget: Nigerian Senate Issues Strong Statement,warns Presidency by Andema(m): 10:27pm On Apr 11, 2016 |
The Senate today (Monday, April 11) advised the Presidency to come clean with Nigerians on the 2016 Budget and stop engaging in surreptitious campaigns of calumny against the Senate in order to cover up its serial errors. Reacting to claims in the media credited to the Executive arm of government on the 2016 budget, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, chairman, Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, in a statement in Abuja, said the National Assembly had bent backwards to wring a coherent document out of the excessively flawed and chaotic versions of the budget proposal submitted to the National Assembly. He said : "while the executive is mandated to prepare and lay before the National Assembly a proposed budget detailing projects to be executed, it should be made clear that the responsibility and power of appropriation lies with the National Assembly. If the presidency expects us to return the budget proposal to them without any adjustments, then some people must be living in a different era and probably have not come to terms with democracy." "We make bold to say however, that the said Lagos-Calabar rail project was not included in the budget proposal presented to the National Assembly by President Muhammadu Buhari and we challenge anyone who has any evidence to the contrary to present such to Nigerians." Since the beginning of the 2016 budget process, it is clear that the National Assembly has suffered all manners of falsehood, deliberate distortion of facts, and outright blackmail, deliberately aimed at poisoning the minds of the people against the institution of the National Assembly. We have endured this with equanimity in the overall interest of Nigerians. Even when the original submission was surreptitiously swapped and we ended up having two versions of the budget, which was almost incomprehensible and heavily padded in a manner that betrays lack of coordination and gross incompetence, we refused to play to the gallery and instead helped the Executive to manage the hugely embarrassing situation it has brought upon itself; but enough is enough." "This latest antics of this particular minister of transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, is reckless, uncalled for and dangerously divisive. Apart from setting the people of the southern part of the country against their northern compatriots, it potentially sets the people against their lawmakers from the concerned constituencies and sets the lawmakers against themselves. This manner of reprehensible Mischief has no place in a democracy. We hereby demand from Mr. Amaechi a publicly tendered apology if he is not able to show evidence that the Lagos-Calabar road project was included in the budget. Otherwise, he should resign forthwith. "Finally, by the provision of Section 81 (4) (a) and (b) of the constitution, the President is allowed to sign the budget and kick-start the implementation of the other areas that constitute over 90 percent of the budget where there is agreement between both arms, even as we engage ourselves to resolve the contentious areas, if there were any. We therefore maintain that even this contrived discrepancies are not sufficient excuse not to sign the budget into law." "We therefore urge President Buhari to sign the 2016 budget without any further delay. For every additional day that the president withholds his assent from the bill, the hardship in the land, which is already becoming intolerable for the masses of our people gets even more complicated. Certainly, as primary representatives of the people we shall not vacate our responsibility and watch the people continue to suffer unduly." www.nigerianbulletin.com/threads/2016-budget-nigerian-senate-issues-strong-statement-warns-presidency.200561/ |
Sports / Photos: Lionel Messi Sends Barack Obama Daughters His Signed Football Shirts by Andema(m): 9:14am On Apr 02, 2016 |
When visiting Argentina last week, American
president Barack Obama, said that his
daughters wanted to meet Barcelona’s
Lionel Messi. However, with Messi in Chile
ahead of a World Cup Qualifier, Obama’s
daughters Malia and Sasha couldn’t make
the trip to see him.

As you can imagine, the two girls were
probably upset and disappointed they didn’t
get to meet the brilliant Lionel Messi.
However, with Messi being Messi, he
thought he’d go out of his way to send the
girls a signed shirt, with their names on the
back.
It now remains to be seen whether Barack
Obama and Lionel Messi will meet up this
summer during the Copa America, but the
Argentine is now certainly in the President’s
good books anyhow.

President Barack Obama has revealed
that, while he’s arguably the most
powerful man in the world, some things
may be beyond in his pale.
The American President, who is in Buenos
Aires, has joked that while he’s been able to
meet Pope Francis, one Argentine remains
elusive: Leo Messi.
Obama quipped that his daughters want to
meet the Barcelona star, but he’s unable to
make that happen. He said:
I also wanted to bring my daughters here, so
they could see the beauty and the vibrancy of
this city.
They’ve already met one famous Argentinean
– His Holiness Pope Francis. Now they want
to meet Messi, but I could not arrange that. |

In the match against Juventus, Bayern
Munich reached halftime in a critical
moment and with the duty to come back.
The result was 0-2. At that moment, the
president Franz Beckenbauer joked Pep
Guardiola would 'neuter' players if they lost.
After the incredible comeback (2-2 after 90
minutes and 4-2 in the extra time,) Müller
talked at Sky and explained what Guardiola
said to the players in the halftime: " Yes, he
told us something similar. He didn't say he
would neuter us, but he said he would cut

Sports / Cristiano Ronaldo, Madrid Press Wrong To Criticise Lionel Messi's Creativity by Andema(m): 6:15pm On Feb 21, 2016 |
Barcelona produced another scintillating
display of football to outclass Celta de Vigo
6-1 with Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Neymar
and Ivan Rakitic all on the score sheet.
Later in midweek, Barca breezed past
Sporting Gijon 1-3 thereby extending their
unbeaten streak to 31 games and Messi also
scored his 300th and 301st goal in La Liga.
While not brilliant, their 1-2 win in Las
Palmas added another valuable three points
in the Catalans' tally.
The game against Celta was in the centre of
a storm due to the "Johan Cruyff" penalty
Messi and Suarez combined to
convert. After Messi scored a brilliant free
kick out from 25 yards, Celta soon equalized
and the match ended 1-1 at the halftime.
With things looking even at the break, Barca
was in dire need of some kind of
inspirational performance. Nobody knows
what the manager told the team during the
break, but right after halftime came a team
out for revenge. Keeping in mind the 4-1
loss earlier in the season, Barca bombarded
the Celta half with attack after attack and
plundered goals at will to register a massive
6-1 scoreline.
However, in the 81st minute, Messi and
Suarez did what Robert Pires and Thierry
Henry could not and scored a beautifully
executed penalty. After an outrageous piece
of skill, Messi was fouled just inside the box
and the referee rightly pointed to the spot.
But to everybody's shock Messi passed the
ball which Suarez then drilled into the net
past goalkeeper Sergio Alvarez.
The Camp Nou crowd erupted and so did
fans around the world.
Perhaps astonishing was the fact that Messi
could have scored his 300th goal in La Liga
had he scored it. Instead he selflessly laid it
off for Suarez who completed his hattrick.
Indeed this has become quite routine in the
Barca camp. Helping each other out at all
times has been the Barca philosophy. And
with the incredible friendship and
understanding Messi, Suarez and Neymar
have built up over the course of one and a
half seasons have made them more than
just team mates. And their actions on the
pitch portray the picture quite well.
Last season, when Messi was going through
a goal drought, Suarez did something
incredible.
He rounded up the Granada goalkeeper and
passed the ball to Messi instead of poking it
into the empty net. Messi scored the goal
and the first signs of the deadly MSN trio’s
unselfishness were on display. Later in the
season, Messi let Neymar take penalties on
a couple of occasions even when the stakes
were higher than ever at the Champions
League.
Sections of the Madrid-based press claimed
Messi's penalty was disrespectful towards
the opposition. Roberto Carlos and Cristiano
Ronaldo had a few things to say about the
incident and made their displeasure clear.
So, was the incident a moment of magic
from the best player on the planet or just
regrettable arrogance?
In my opinion, there was nothing petulant
about it nor was it illegal in any way . Johan
Cruyff and Jesper Olsen played a one-two
and scored in similar conditions in 1982. It
was then hailed as a work of art by one and
all. So why all the fuss now?
Cruyff was recently diagnosed with cancer
and is currently undergoing treatment. He
recently stated that all was going well and
he was winning 2-0 in his agonising battle.
Since Cruyff is one of the biggest Barcelona
legends, both as a player and manager,
Messi and co. perhaps thought of giving him
a tribute on behalf of all football fans.
Messi, Neymar and Suarez planned it out
and brilliantly executed it, so what's not to
like?
As always, a section of the media especially
from the Spanish Capital comes out all guns
blazing on the Argentine. He was targeted
for his tax evasion case which hasn't been
proved till now. He was targeted for failing
to lift the World Cup and Copa America. He
was also blamed for the debacle of finishing
trophyless in the 2013-14 season. Perhaps,
with no other off-the-field issues due to his
low-key demeanour, the press have resorted
to ridiculing him for some petty on-the-field
issues.
Another allegation that has been levelled on
Messi this season is that he is trying his
best to help dethrone Ronaldo as the top
scorer and so he passed the ball so that
Suarez could score his hattrick and extend
his lead in the race for the Pichichi. This is
in itself a ridiculous argument and must be
laughed at. After all, why should the best
player in the world miss a penalty so that
his team mate could score? Believe it or
not, Messi as obsessed with Ronaldo as the
Portuguese may love to think.
As a winner of the golden boot thrice, Messi
has nothing left to prove to his detractors .
The No.10 has always stated he shares no
enmity with his peer from Madrid and has
only praises for him. He also has stressed
on quite a number of occasions as how he
isn't much distracted by individual awards
and team trophies are what drives him to be
the best. For someone who would not
hesitate to give away his five Ballon d'Or
trophies for a single FIFA World Cup crown
for his country, he is the hallmark of
selflessness and team play.
Messi, Neymar and Suarez are all in the Top
5 list of top scorers and assisters in the
Liga. The team has a huge six point
advantage on second placed Atletico Madrid,
currently nine after the team's win in Las
Palmas. A repeat of last season's heroics
seems well on the cards. With performances
like these, there is hardly a team in the
world which can stop the Barca juggernaut.
And as long as the team keeps on winning,
there will be jealous opponents and
detractors willing to gatecrash the party.
The current Barca squad lays stress on
playing beautiful football and entertaining
fans. For players to do it on a regular basis,
they need to be on good terms on and off
the pitch. They need to develop the
understanding and read each other's minds.
So, when Ronaldo says he doesn't need hugs
and kisses to succeed with his team, he
must realise that it is collective trophies, not
individual awards or big-mouthing in front of
the press, that leave a truly lasting legacy. 1 Like |
Sports / Ft. Real Madrid 1-1 Malaga by Andema(m): 5:56pm On Feb 21, 2016 |
Cristiano Ronaldo gave the visitors the lead in
the first half but went on to miss a penalty,
and the Andalusians took full advantage by
turning in a crucial equaliser
Real Madrid's hopes of overtaking Barcelona
at the top of La Liga suffered a severe blow
on Sunday, when Malaga held the giants to a
1-1 draw at La Rosaleda.
Cristiano Ronaldo had fired his club into the
lead with a fine header 33 minutes in,
although the striker appeared to be offside.
But he could not take advantage from the
penalty spot after being hauled down by
Weligton, as Carlos Kameni did well to keep
out his effort.
Malaga gained confidence and pressed hard
for the leveller, and it finally arrived 25
minutes from the end when Raul Albentosa
converted from short range, leaving Madrid
nine points adrift of their rivals. |
Politics / Fg To Spend #120billion On Lagos-calabar-kano Rail Way Construction by Andema(m): 2:04pm On Feb 19, 2016 |
he Minister of Transportion, Rotimi Amaechi,
on Thursday said the federal government would
spend an aggregate of N120 billion for its two
new standard (guage) railway tracks to be
constructed on the Lagos-Kano and Lagos-
Calabar rail corridors from its 2016 budget.
Making the disclosure after a train ride on the
completed 186-kilometre Abuja-Kaduna railway
project, from Idu terminus at the Federal Capital
Territory (FCT), Amaechi said the N60 billion
apiece on both corridors will be for new
standard gauge, adding that the narrow gauge
on those corridors are already functioning.
He said: “We have N120 billion on the 2016
projects. As you are aware of the dire financial
situation, and putting into cognizance that
President Muhammadu Buhari has taken all the
rail projects as priority, out of this, N60 billion is
for the Lagos-Kano standard gauge as the
narrow gauge is working already.”
According to him, government is spending N60
billion apiece as part of its counterpart
contributions, while the Chinese Exim bank will
offset the balance payment for the project as
part of their obligation. He added that the two
fresh projects are however not contractual.
Amaechi said: “In fact, when I was at the
National Assembly, they wanted to know if the
new projects were on contract terms, I told
them no.”
He said the federal government was currently
implementing the projects that it met on the
ground.
“We didn’t intend to cancel or bring in our own
ideas to what we met in the office. The Lagos-
Kano narrow gauge that was awarded by former
President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, and the
Lagos-Calabar by President Goodluck Jonathan
are still very good, so we had no option than to
fly with them,” he said.
While expressing delight at the completion of
the Abuja-Kaduna railway which was
constructed by the China Civil Engineering
Construction Corporation (CCECC), with over
$1billion, the minister said: “The essence of
taking this tour is to assess whether we are
ready for commercial activities.
“By March this year, we would test run the rail
services and it should be free for those who
will run on it between March and April. By May,
we expect that President Buhari, will commence
the commercial activities on this rail. And by
that way, those who want to go to Kaduna by
rail can actual use our rail services route.
“That will be the activity on this rail for this
year. This rail is design to start from here (Idu)
to Kaduna. But since some areas are not ready,
we will continue to pick passengers from here
(Idu), until they are ready then we would
disengage the temporary facilities.”
However, Amaechi said government would give
N362 million as compensation to the owners of
a Catholic hospital along the Kubwa which has
been a clog to effective movement of the rail
because of its proximity to the rail track.
The minister added: “The Abuja-Kaduna rail is
100 percent complete and that is why we said
we are ready to roll out railway operations. I
have to make sure that both the government
and Daughters of Charity Catholic hospital are
amicably settled.
“We have agreed to pay them N362 million for
that plot of land. The only difference that
happened today (yesterday) was that we have
asked CCECC to do Corporate Social
Responsibility (CSR) with a 200KVA generator
while the N362 million will be used to get
another building because of the patients at the
hospital.
“We have also just asked CCECC to make
provision for lift in all the platforms so that the
disabled can access the trains and coaches.
The coaches are coming at the end of this
month.”
On the need to train Nigerians on railway
technology, he said: “I have told CCECC that if
they have to build the Lagos-Calabar standard
gauge, they have to build a Railway University
where Nigerians will be trained so that the
Chinese technology is not just dumped on us.
“The Chinese must have to transfer their
technology, expertise and skills to us, and that
is why they must build the university for the
country on the Lagos-Calabar corridor. This is
part of the amendment that we are making on
facilities that have to be included, which will
manufacture coaches and wagons in the
country like they do in South Africa.”
“The total value of the 186 km between Abuja-
Kaduna is over $1billion, it was initially over
$800 million, our cultural background affects
construction in Nigeria, and because of some
form of human activities and animals crossing
on the track, there will be fencing from Abuja to
Kaduna which cost about $100 million and other
extra works which brought it to over $1 billi |
