Politics / Nigeria’s Jonathan Says Country May Revisit Law On Gay Marriage by Andiebest(m): 6:30pm On Jun 06, 2016
Nigeria may revisit a law that banned same-sex marriages, former President Goodluck Jonathan.
“When it comes to equality, we must all have the same rights as Nigerian citizens,” Jonathan said at a forum at Bloomberg’s European headquarters in London on Monday.
Jonathan in 2014 signed a law criminalizing same-sex marriages, gay groups and public displays of affection by homosexuals. The decision triggered condemnation by religious leaders, human rights groups and Western governments.
“In the light of deepening debates for all Nigerians and other citizens of the world to be treated equally and without discrimination, and with the clear knowledge that the issue of sexual orientation is still evolving, the nation may at the appropriate time revisit the law,” Jonathan said.
Celebrities / Omojuwa Does Nigeria Proud At Blogger Awards Sponsored By Bill Gates by Andiebest(m): 12:42pm On Jun 06, 2016
http://www.savidnews.com/2016-african-blogger-award-omojuwa-emerges-africas-twitter-personality/
The winners of the annual African Blogger Awards have been announced, with the competition receiving over 2,000 entries from across the continent, more than doubling the number of entries from 2015. The awards saw particularly strong growth in entries from West Africa.

Entries were open in five main categories including Africa’s Top Blogger, Top Instagrammer, Top Twitter Profile, Best Facebook Page and Top YouTuber, as well as across 20 sub-categories.

Categories that saw the highest growth in entries included the Top Blog in Africa category which grew by 191% compared to 2015, and the Marketing, Media and Brand category, which grew by nearly 80%.

“This is the third year we’re running the African Blogger Awards competition, and every year we not only see an increase in the number of entries, but also in the quality of world-class content that the social media influencers are creating and sharing across their various platforms,” says Murray Legg, global head of strategy for Webfluential and co-founder of the African Blogger Awards.

The winners in the five main categories are:
The best blog about Africa is Africa on the Rise from Nigeria.
The best Instagrammer in Africa is Gareth Pon from South Africa, for the third consecutive year.
The best Twitter personality in Africa is JJ Omojuwa from Nigeria.
The best Facebook profile in Africa is Xtian Dela from Kenya, who was the 2015 best Twitter personality.
The best YouTube channel in Africa is Chris Rogers from South Africa.

The 2016 African Blogger Awards were sponsored by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. This year saw the addition of three new categories: Women and Girls Empowerment; Public Health and Social Issues; and Active Citizenship. The winners and runners up in these categories came from Nigeria, Kenya and Ghana, emphasising the importance that online and social media play in highlighting social issues across the continent.

Winners in the three new categories are:
Women and Girls Empowerment: Mummy Tales from Kenya; followed by Araba from Nigeria.
Public Health: Nigeria Health Watch from Nigeria; followed by Ghana Health Nest from Ghana.
Social Issues and Citizenship: Africa on the Rise from Nigeria; followed by Circumspecte from Ghana.

“The Gates Foundation extends its congratulations to the winners in these three categories. The work you are doing to highlight both the great successes and continuing challenges facing African development is highly commendable. Your work has sparked conversations around sensitive issues and you have helped increase accountability in critical sectors like public health,” said Dr Ayo Ajayi, Africa director for the Gates Foundation.

“Perhaps the most powerful role that a medium like blogging plays is that it provides a platform for a diversity of voices. People on this continent are now actively sharing their own stories and that’s a very positive and powerful thing.”

The remaining category winners include:
Advice and Parenting: You, Baby and I from South Africa; followed by 3 Kids, 2 Dogs and 1 Old House from South Africa.
Arts and Culture: Books Live from South Africa; followed by Pop Muse from Madagascar.
Business, Finance and Entrepreneurship: TechFinancials from South Africa; followed by Circumspecte from Ghana.
Entertainment: YoMzanzi; followed by Jucy Africa, both from South Africa.

Lifestyle: Naa Oyoo Quarterly from Ghana; followed by Inspired Living from South Africa.
Marketing, Media and Brand: Moses Kemibaro from Kenya.
Music: Texx and the City from South Africa; followed by African Hip Hop Blog from Zimbabwe.
Personal: Caffeine and Fairy Dust; followed by 3 Kids, 2 Dogs and 1 Old House, both from South Africa.
Personal Health and Wellness: Healthable; followed by Health Save Blog, both from Nigeria.
Photography: ByJono; followed by Drizzle and Dip, both from South Africa.

Technology and Gadgets: PixelVulture; followed by Vamers, both from South Africa.
Travel: The Travel Manuel; followed by The Incidental Tourist, both from South Africa.
Youth Culture: Melenial; followed by Book of Swag, both from South Africa.

Winners in each category receive a commemorative trophy and a web banner announcing their achievement that they can leverage on their winning platform and across their personal social networks.

“Our hearty congratulations go to the winners of the 2016 African Blogger Awards, all of whom are great examples of how Africans are choosing new ways to communicate and consume content,” says Legg. “They are leapfrogging traditional media and historical constraints, and setting a new status quo in social commentary, information sharing and interaction across borders, democratising access to information in the process. It is indeed an exciting time to be a part of the digital universe in Africa.”

The African Blogger Awards provide an impartial measure of the reach, resonance and relevance of an influencer channel, and winners are chosen based on scientific metrics, rather than through peer nominations and voting.

Entrants are required to register their online properties on Webfluential, the platform that give brands and the marketing industry, including advertisers, public relations agencies and media buyers, an independent measurement of the most relevant online and social influencers to include in their campaigns.

Business / IMF: Nigeria’s Economy Will Grow Faster Than Saudi’s In 2016 by Andiebest(m): 2:26pm On May 21, 2016
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) says Saudi Arabia’s economy will grow by 1.2 percent in 2016, slower than Nigeria’s 2.3 percent projected growth.

The IMF team led by Tim Callen held discussions from May 1 to May 12 on the 2016 Article IV Consultation with Saudi Arabia.

At the conclusion of the mission, Callen said: “The decline in oil prices is affecting the Saudi Arabian economy”.

“Real GDP growth is projected by IMF staff at 1.2 percent this year, down from 3.5 percent in 2015. Lower oil revenues have resulted in current account and fiscal deficits which are projected by IMF staff at around 9 and 14 percent of GDP, respectively, in 2016.

“Nevertheless, the financial assets held by the government remain high, providing a substantial cushion. The decline in bank deposits and the resulting tightening of liquidity conditions and rise in interbank interest rates have not yet impacted credit growth.”

At the conclusion of a similar mission to Nigeria in March, the executive board of the IMF projected a GDP growth of 2.3 percent in 2016 – lowest since democracy returned in 1999.

The board added that Nigeria’s government deficit will rise to about 3.7 percent of GDP, lesser than Saudi’s nine percent to 14 percent.

“Lower oil prices have significantly affected the fiscal and external accounts, decimating government revenues to just 7.8 percent of GDP and resulting in the doubling of the general government deficit to about 3.7 percent of GDP in 2015,” IMF said in Nigeria.

The IMF said the Saudi government policy of using a combination of deposit drawdowns and international and domestic debt issuance to finance the fiscal deficit is appropriate.

“The establishment of a Debt Management Office (DMO) is a positive step and should be accompanied by the introduction of an efficient and market-based process for debt issuance,” the organisation said.

“Further reforms to the fiscal framework that sets the annual budget in a medium-term framework and clearly establishes fiscal policy goals would support fiscal adjustment.

“Staff welcomes the establishment of the macro-fiscal unit (MFU). Given the plans for the sale of a stake in Aramco and for a greater role for the Public Investment Fund, it will be appropriate to enhance their transparency and integrate them into the fiscal framework.”

Unlike Nigeria, IMF said: “the exchange rate peg to the US dollar continues to serve Saudi Arabia well given the structure of the economy”.

Politics / Buhari To Probe $16b Power Investment By Obj, Jonathan by Andiebest(m): 12:33pm On May 09, 2016
http://www.pmnewsnigeria.com/2016/05/09/buhari-to-probe-16b-power-investment-by-obj-jonathan/
President Muhammadu Buhari has vowed to investigate the $16 billion spent by the Olusegun Obasanjo and the Goodluck Jonathan administrations in the power over the years.
Despite the huge investment in the sector by the previous administrations, Nigerians are still grappling with poor power supply and most companies have closed down or relocated to other countries, due to non availability of electricity for production.
President Buhari made this known in an interview in Katsina monitored on radio and television.
While reiterating his administration’s desire to improve power supply in the country, President Buhari disclosed that he would look into the investment in the sector by previous administrations.
“It is a must for us to look into the investment in the power sector because nothing will work without adequate power supply in the country. The problem of the power sector is like that of the petroleum industry. We will look at how they spent the money because there is no power and nothing to show for the $16b investment by the previous administrations,” he said.
He assured Nigerians that he would do his best to turn around the fortunes of the country through the effective utilisation of available resources.
On the 2016 budget, the president said he would do his best to implement it.
“We will do our best to fix the country. When the Minister of Budget and National Planning, Udoma Udo Udoma, asked me to sign the budget weeks ago and there were issues, I told him I won’t. But when he insisted, I told him if I assented to it and anything happened, he would be held responsible. He accepted and left. But when he had a second thought, he ran back to me and agreed with me that we shouldn’t sign it. It was at that point I heard of padding. The committees of the National Assembly removed our projects and replaced it with theirs.
“That’s was why we had three weeks to look at it. When he returned to me again, Udoma told me that most of the projects they (National Assembly) included had been removed but that we can go with the remaining ones since I must approve money before funds would be released for the execution of projects, “ he said.
On the recovery of stolen funds, he said all the stolen funds would be recovered and the perpetrators would not be spared.
He said adequate attention would be given to the agricultural sector in a renewed effort to diversify the country’s economy.
“We will work hard to restore the glory of the agricultural sector to ensure food security in the country.”
On the activities of the Niger Delta militants, he said they would be dealt with at the appropriate time. Quoting a slogan familiar with former Head of State, retired General Yakubu Gowon after the civil war, Buhari said, “To keep Nigeria one is a task that must be won.”
Politics / Nigeria’s Largest Donor Suspends Aid, Asks Buhari To Probe ‘large Scale Fraud’ by Andiebest(m): 3:10pm On May 06, 2016
The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM) has suspended disbursement of funds to Nigeria following discovery of large scale fraud to the tune of millions of dollars.

The organisation, which is the highest donor to Nigeria in terms of HIV and malaria, said it has disbursed more than $1.4 billion to the country since 2003.

Calling on President Muhammadu Buhari to take action, Global Fund said Nigeria has faced significant challenges around financial management, which has led to a number of investigations and recoveries of grant money in the past years.

Mark Dybul, an executive director at Global Fund, said an audit report exposed “challenges of grants not achieving impact targets, poor quality of health services, treatment disruptions and fraud, corruption and misuse of funds”.

“The audit report on Nigeria covered US$889 million of Global Fund grants, and found systemic weakness in the controls in various government entities,” he said.

“The investigation report found fraud and collusion in the amount of US$3.8 million.”

Dybul said the audit reviewed multiple grants between 2013 and 2015, and identified significant problems with internal controls relating to procurement conducted by government agencies like the National Agency for Control of AIDS (NACA) and the National Malaria Elimination Programme (NMEP).

The audit identified $20 million as expenditure for which NACA was unable to provide supporting documentation.

NACA was also accused of non-compliance with procurement policies and inadequate controls over the distribution of health commodities for HIV.

The organisation said it also observed inadequate inventory management which resulted in expired HIV commodities worth $5.4 million in the last two years.

“In addition, the audit identified a lack of documentary evidence related to human resources and payment approval processes, with $7.65 million identified as unsupported expenditures,” he said.

“Following work performed by a third party fiscal agent, US$5.1 million has now been verified, based on a review of supporting documentation that was not available during the audit; US$1.0 million requires further clarification, and US$1.5 million of expenditure that has not yet been reviewed due to timing.

“We expect to be able to provide a final, comprehensive view of these expenditures by 10 May.”

Dybul revealed that about $3.8 million of irregular spending was also uncovered at the Department of Health Planning, Research & Statistics (DPRS).

He said malaria stocks were out in all the 42 health facilities visited by the fund’s office of inspector general within eight months.

Yesterday I decided to go and Register my ntel lime in order to be among the 1st 100,000 that would make calls free for life, but when I went there I found out that what ntel sim was really about and seriously 95%of people don't know what this ntel is all about . So am going to throw it down as point for easy reading and understanding

* The sim is only for 4g phones with LTE technology
* You can only register one simcard with one ID, I.e if you reserved for lines you would have to go with 4 different IDs
* This network is for the rich and those who are conversant with 4g technology
* In this network you would make fewer voice calls than normal cause the minutes you can call is attached to the data you buy
* The 100,000 that will make call free for life will make the free calls only within themselves.

So before you go to get your ntel sim ask yourself is it worth the stress cause believe me you are going to spend a lot if time on your feet.
Do they they have modems?

Politics / NGE President: Editors’ Guild, Adesina Did Not Collect N50m In Cash From FG by Andiebest(m): 9:16pm On Jan 07, 2016
Chinedu Eze
http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/nge-president-editors-8217-guild-adesina-did-not-collect-n50m-in-cash-from-fg/229704/
The President of the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), Garba Deen Muhammad, has denied that his predecessor, now the Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media, Femi Adesina, collected N50 million in cash from former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Mohammad said the amount was the contribution of the former president at the N850 million fundraising dinner on April 10, 2014 for the building of a befitting secretariat to be known as the Editors’ Plaza.

In a statement made available to THISDAY wednesday, Mohammad said: “On 10 April, 2014, the NGE held a fundraising dinner at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja, to raise N850million for the purpose of building a befitting secretariat in Abuja which shall be called The Editors Plaza. It was a public event, attended by several dignitaries among them federal cabinet ministers, state governors and captains of industry or their representatives.

“Former President Goodluck Jonathan was invited to the event at which he was represented by the former Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mr. Labaran Maku.

“At the event, Maku, among other donors, publicly pledged N50million as the federal government’s contribution towards the building project. Indeed the announcement of this donation has been on the website of the NGE since April 12, 2014; and is still there for those who may wish to verify.”

According to the statement, shortly after the event, the federal government redeemed its pledge through a transfer direct into the Zenith Bank account of the NGE.

“For the avoidance of doubt, neither Mr. Femi Adesina, who was the President of the guild at the time, nor any other official of the guild collected cash from the government.”

Politics / Petition In Favour Of President Buhari Gathers Over 5000 Signatures In 24hours by Andiebest(m): 12:37am On Jan 04, 2016
Petition written by supporters of President Muhammadu Buhari intends to counter a similar one circulating online calling for his resignation or impeachment for violating court orders has gathered approximately 5,434 signatures in less than 24hours as of the time of publication against 2,232 signatures gathered by the petition against him in 4days.

The petition in support of President Buhari, started on iPetitions by Audu Bukarti, states that “some political prostitutes and their clients have started an online petition calling on PMB to resign his office for their allegation that the president shown total lack of respect to Court Order when refused to release two high profile accused persons, Colonel Sambo Dasuki and the Biafran separatist leader, Nnamdi Kanu.”

Mr. Bukarti continues, “this petition is a calculated attempt to demoralize our president and truncate his war against corruption in public offices.”

A December 31st petition written by Carol Ajie on Change.org, which calls for President Buhari’s resignation, has received approximately 2,224 supporters at the time of this publication. The petition argues that President Buhari has violated his oath of office because he has not discharged his duties faithfully and in accordance with the Constitution. The petition against President Buhari claims that “in holding Mr Kanu [detained by the Department of State Services] beyond the required period they have infracted on the Immigration Act, the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 and subsisting court orders.”

The Change.org petition asserts that “President Buhari [should] resign from office or face impeachment proceedings. Alternatively avoid another Burundi, call him to comply with the Orders of Courts.”

At the time of this publication the petition in support of President Buhari, which started on January 3rd 2016, has 5349 signatures

These dueling petitions are the latest form of online activism in Nigeria questioning the legitimacy and leadership of President Buhari. Online and social media have been critical of President Buhari’s treatment of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), who was unlawfully arrested by agents of the Department of State Services (DSS). President Buhari has also been widely criticized for his many trips to foreign countries and the massacre of Shiite Muslims by the military in Zaria, Kaduna State.
