dayokanu: If I say most EPL fans dont know anything about football they would be up in armsIt's a bit harsh to say they won't make the reserve bench. but one thing I know for sure is that they won't start at most European teams. |
RuuDie: Like you've rightly pointed out...there are way too many other factors and variables that determine who gets voted for individual awards.Of course you can't judge a player strictly by individual awards alone. But you must agree it surely does go a long way in telling you if a player is good or not. Check the top10 list of world player of the year nominee since its inception, there is definitely not one bad player on that list, they are all iconic legendary footballer players and Beckham was one of them. Which makes your statement about Tony V (who have been found out and have been practically useless at United for almost two years now) shading Beckham sounds a little delusional, no offense. Being nominated and cracking the top 2 of such prestigious awards as (Fifa World Player of the Year and Ballon d'Or) more than once alone should give you a clear indication of the level in which Beckham was playing at. Everyone with eyes knows Riquelme was a very good player at Villarreal. But we shouldn't dismiss the fact that he played and failed at Barcelona (a big European club). If he had succeeded at Barcelona, I have no doubt he would have won or come close to winning some prestigious individual awards. To get recognised in Fifa and UEFA awards you have to be delivering at the highest level of both club or international football, which includes helping your team win trophies. He did neither, hence why he wasn't really recognised in that sense. |
RuuDie: Laughable, yes...!That alone don't get you nominated for the world footballer of the year award no matter how handsome or English you are.... It would seem you did not watch Beckham play during his prime. And by the way, here is how Beckham stacks up against some of the well known best freekick takers in football history. Zico (80) Juninho Pernambucano (75) David Beckham (65) Ronaldinho (61) Alessandro Del Piero (49) Roberto Carlos (38) Maradona (37) Andrea Pirlo (34) Zinedine ZIDANE (26) That doesn't look half decent to me. |
dademola: bros, they say e achieve all these ONLY because he is handsome and he is english!!Lol. Seriously anybody that says that, his/her knowledge of football has to be questioned, really. You have to have some level of talent to constantly make the top 10 best player in the world list, it takes even more talent to be named the second best player in the world on numerous occasions. That was an era when we have lots of great players in world football, countless world footballer of the year contenders unlike now when there is only Messi and Ronaldo. True, Beckham had a lot of media attention for many non-footballing reasons, but that shouldn't take away the fact that he actually was a very good footballer (Especially during his United career ). At this point in time, Tony V can only dream of becoming the player Beckham was. |
afrodoc: Bros thank you for that post. Its shocking to see people here compare david beckham who was a fixture on the world footballer of the year list for some years to antonio valencia who has not been near that list any time in his life.It shows you what people know about football here |
RuuDie: It doesn't matter which Beckham...its Tony V anyday. The fact that we are even particular about a certain period of Beckie's career (which we presume to be his best) speaks volumes!I couldn't help but to reply to this post... It is laughable to suggest Tony V is better than Beckham. Beckham was a certified world class winger, you can't say the same about Tony V. I'm not trying to take anything away from Tony V but he is just not just on Beckham 's level, not for now at least. World Player of the Year 1999 1. RIVALDO Vitor Borba Ferreira (Brazil) 2. David BECKHAM (England) 3. Gabriel BATISTUTA (Argentina) 4. Zinedine ZIDANE (France) 5. Christian VIERI (Italy) 6. Luis FIGO (Portugal) 7. Andrei SHEVCHENKO (Ukraine) 2000 1. Zinedine ZIDANE (France) 2. Luis FIGO (Portugal) 3. RIVALDO Vitor Borba Ferreira (Brazil) 4. Gabriel BATISTUTA (Argentina) 5. Andrei SHEVCHENKO (Ukraine) 6. David BECKHAM (England) 2001 1. Luis FIGO (Portugal) 2. David BECKHAM (England) 3. RAÚL González Blanco (Spain) 4. Zinedine ZIDANE (France) 5. RIVALDO Vitor Borba Ferreira (Brazil) 6. Juan Sebastián VERÓN (Argentina) Ballon d’Or Winners 1999 1st Rivaldo (Brazilian, Barcelona) 2nd David Beckham (English, Manchester United) 3rd Andriy Shevchenko (Ukrainian, AC Milan) Beckham wasn't the second best player in the world for nothing. |
Unfortunately I can't watch this game. Seems like Liverpool really want this, their line up is pretty strong. I think we are in for a tough game. |
Disgraceful |
coogar: any of kagawa, young & nani is fine by me on the left side. young is excellent at moving the ball quickly in a counterattack. it's only when the opponents park the bus that he struggles - this is why young's best games were mostly against top sides. |

The only changes might be the right back and the left wing. The wing especially is still up in the air as to who Moyes will go with. There's Sir Giggsy, Young, Kagawa and Nani. He can easily start with any of them. I, personally will like to see Kagawa start. |
elampiro: David Moyes has a great record against City having won 10 of his previous 14 games against them ! Fingers crossed and let's hope in a win against City on Sunday.Well, let's hope he didn't leave that record back in Merseyside. Winning against City will be very huge. |
Valencia explains shirt shift Antonio Valencia has revealed for the first time why he has reverted back to the no.25 shirt during an exclusive interview with MUTV. The winger was outstanding in the 4-2 defeat of Bayer Leverkusen in midweek and scored the final goal after creating Robin van Persie's hooked effort that regained the lead for the Reds. Ahead of the Manchester derby, Valencia spoke to MUTV's Countdown to Kick-Off show and explained the motivation behind his decision to change numbers. Both David Moyes and Sir Alex Ferguson feel the wide man has benefited psychologically from ditching the no.7 jersey vacated by Michael Owen's departure in 2012. "I think it turned out to be a very good number for me when I first arrived at the club as I was just given the no.25 more or less," he said. "But things went really, really well. I played well wearing that shirt so I think it was a decision I came to in the summer. Maybe if I can get back to the form I showed before, why not? It is a good idea to start wearing it again. "It had been something I had been thinking about for quite a long time. I'd been considering a change back and maybe it is psychological or maybe it is just all about a good-luck symbol, if you like. We get a lot of that in Ecuador, maybe superstition, and l hope it continues and still brings me more good luck this season." Sir Alex told MUTV on Thursday: "Antonio was back to his best [on Tuesday]. Changing the number of his jersey again - it's amazing how it can affect a player like that. "Maybe it was a great thing for him to do that. He used his initiative to go back to 25 and was fantastic." Valencia also confirmed that his celebration on Tuesday night was a tribute to former Ecuador team-mate Christian 'Chucho' Benitez, who sadly lost his life at the tender age of 27 in the summer. "It was terrible that he passed away a couple of months ago," stated the winger. "He wasn't just a friend but like a brother to me and I dedicated the tattoo to him. That first goal celebration and every other goal that I celebrate hopefully this season, I'll be dedicating to him also. It was just a huge shock to everyone." |
chrisley024: We've got a lot of experience; Evra, Rio, Vidic, Carrick, Rooney n VP. In all positions . D old man should pls respect himself n not come near d team. That is correct.... But you know Giggs doesn't pick himself , Moyes does. Moyes will be the one to shoulder the blame if he starts and perform poorly. |

chrisley024: I'll give up if Giggs is on the line-up. Another concern is Evra's defensive play. Out of position most times.Yeah, Evra being caught out defensively has been a reoccurring problem the past few years. But I feel with Fellaini in the side now, it can be minimised with Fellaini dropping slightly to the left once Evra go on those runs. Fellaini can cover for him defensively giving him enough time to recover back to position. The fact that Giggs didn't play our last two matches might mean Moyes was saving him for the City game. He Probably wants to go for experience........ . But we can never say for sure, Sunday will tell if he is picked or not. If he is, then we just have to hope he can give a solid performance. |
chrisley024: I would play same squad that won on tuesday; Smalling for Rio, Rafa @ RB n Nani for Kagawa. Why do I have a sneaky feeling Giggs might be preferred to start on the left? |
Mr_TA: I would definitely accept a 1-1 draw but I have a fear of Aguero more than any other player in the league and I feel with Rio and Vidic playing so many games in a row, we could be in trouble.I am not sure Rio and Vidic playing a couple games in a row would affect them at this stage of the season though. I think they are still very fresh. |
Josydaky: MOD, PLS SHUT THIS THREAD DOWN. BIG BROTHER AFRICA IS OVER. MOVE ON WITH YA LIVES, PEEP.Why does it bother you?. Take your own advice and move on, leave the rest of us that still finds this thread relevant Ok?. I see you @ochongonoko. Why don't you drop by the Manchester United thread sometime, as a United fan, surely that is a thread that ought to catch your interest. |
Fellaini Vs Yaya Toure The Stats: Premier League 2012/2013 https://i1128.photobucket.com/albums/m494/mecuryball/article-2426613-1BEE68E7000005DC-854_634x761.jpg |
Premier League preview: Manchester City Vs Manchester United https://i1128.photobucket.com/albums/m494/mecuryball/Screenshot_2013-09-20-13-20-01-1.png Manuel Pellegrini and David Moyes will meet in their first Manchester derby at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday after steady starts to their respective reigns. Manchester City boss Pellegrini has picked up two wins, a draw and a defeat in his four Premier League games since replacing Roberto Mancini, while United counterpart Moyes has an identical record since succeeding Sir Alex Ferguson. Moyes will take his team across Manchester hoping to emulate last season's dramatic 3-2 win for United and also maintain his own excellent record at the Etihad Stadium. The Scot won on four of his last six visits as Everton manager, losing just once, and victory on Sunday would continue a run of 'firsts' for Moyes. Last week's 2-0 success over Crystal Palace was Moyes' first win at Old Trafford before he celebrated his first Champions League group game as a manager by beating Bayer Leverkusen 4-2 at home on Tuesday. Wayne Rooney was a central figure in that game after scoring twice, and he also netted a brace in the corresponding Manchester derby last season. Rooney, who was described by Moyes as 'world class' after the Leverkusen win, put United 2-0 up before Robin van Persie's deflected free-kick stole the points in stoppage-time after Yaya Toure and Pablo Zabaleta had drawn City level. However, last season's goal-fest was a rarity as the previous six meetings at The Etihad had failed to produce a game containing more than one goal. Pellegrini is familiar with low-scoring affairs against United as, in four encounters during his time as Villarreal coach, each game finished 0-0 in the Champions League. City impressed in Europe in midweek after a 3-0 win over Viktoria Plzen and Pellegrini is seeking a hat-trick of home wins in the Premier League after beating Newcastle and Hull City 4-0 and 2-0 respectively. And, despite injuries hitting City's defence, they have kept clean sheets in four of their five games so far this season. CITY LAST 6 GAMES https://i1128.photobucket.com/albums/m494/mecuryball/Screenshot_2013-09-20-13-20-35-1.png City captain Vincent Kompany is fit to start his first Premier League game since the opening weekend after playing 90 minutes against Plzen in midweek. Kompany had been out with a groin injury, but Micah Richards (hamstring), Martin Demichelis (knee) and Gael Clichy are all sidelined, along with playmaker David Silva (thigh). Pellegrini could, therefore, name an unchanged team after the 3-0 win in Plzen, where Sergio Aguero and Edin Dzeko started up front. UNITED LAST 6 GAMES https://i1128.photobucket.com/albums/m494/mecuryball/Screenshot_2013-09-20-13-20-45-1.png United boss Moyes must decide whether to make any changes to the side which beat Leverkusen, against whom Shinji Kagawa started his first game under the Scot. Kagawa shrugged off a virus to start, but he could make way, with Nani available after a European suspension and Ashley Young pushing for a recall. England striker Danny Welbeck is still doubtful, while Phil Jones and Rafael are sidelined, so Chris Smalling could again start at right-back. Opta Facts ● Since his Premier League debut in August 2006, Ashley Young has won a joint-league-high 12 penalties. ● Wayne Rooney has now either scored or assisted 40 goals in his last 44 Premier League games. ● Yaya Toure has made 347 passes this season, 30 more than any other player in the division and 65 more than Utd's leading passer Michael Carrick (282). My Prediction: 1-1 |
StarBoard: I'm not a financial expert or economist, neither do I claim to be one. That is sort of what I'm trying to tell him. The gate revenue during the Olympics is not much. Commercial revenue is where the major growth came from. |
nateevs: That's optimism without any concrete basis. A close look at the figures show that there was a considerable increase in commercial revenue propped up notably by an increase in gate revenue. This increase, according to a BBC financial review, is as a result of Old Trafford being used as an Olympic venue - a one time event unlikely to be repeated. It is clear you don't even know what you are talking about. Commercial revenue is different from gate revenue which is also known as matchday revenue. Granted the Olympics contributed to the increase of our matchday revenue(which is unlikely to be repeated ). But if you look closely you will realise it didn't contribute more than £6 million, which is not as enormous as you will have us believe. The main increase came in the commercial department. Which will Increase further next year as more commercial deals are being signed(they even announced a new deal today).. Plus the significant increase in TV revenue. My brother, my optimism is not baseless. I have read a lot of financial experts analyse our finances, pointing out reasons why, and areas where we can grow in the coming years, and ultimately match Madrid or even overtake them sooner rather than later, as long as we keep winning things and doing well in the Champions League. Most of these revenue forecast are usually very correct. Last year United revenue was predicted to be between £320-£350 million. look what happened, we earned £363 million ,significantly higher than predicted. Next year's revenue is already being predicted to be between £420-£430 million which might increase if we manage to do well in the Champions League, reaching the semifinals or the final . (that is without our imminent contract renewal with Nike which will bring in anything between £20-£30 million more)..... You see my friend, I have plenty reasons to be optimistic. |
afrodoc: @AndreRush. Thanks for d Rooney info.It honestly would have been a big mistake if Rooney had been sold at all, even abroad. Regardless of his form sometimes, Rooney has been an integral component of our team. I know a lot of people will disagree with me, but Rooney for me is and has been our most important player since Ronaldo left, even more important than Van Persie(that's not trying to say Rooney is better than Van Persie in terms of pure ability) . I have also noticed there might be a little rivalry between Rooney and Van Persie. Hopefully Moyes will be able to sort that out in time, if indeed there is a rivalry . |

Van Persie lauds confident Reds Confidence is often the key to success and Robin van Persie believes United’s self-belief provided the foundation for Tuesday’s convincing victory over Bayer Leverkusen. The Reds brushed aside the Bundesliga giants with relative ease thanks to two goals from Wayne Rooney, one from Antonio Valencia and another from van Persie, whose movement up front was also an eye-catching component in an encouraging team display. And when speaking to MUTV after the match, the Dutchman was quick to praise his team-mates and explain why they were such convincing winners. “We were very confident on the ball, everybody did their bit and we scored a couple of goals,” said Robin. “Everything starts with being confident on the ball and trying to look for that pass in front, that’s what we did and that’s why we scored.” Robin also had kind words for Rooney after his strike partner converted his 200th goal for United, whilst also tipping his cap to Marouane Fellaini following his Champions League debut. “Wayne played really well. I love to play with him as he can do everything, he can drop, he can go in behind, he can play the short and the long game. He did really well. “Marouane did really well also. He was very solid and gets a lot of loose balls back. He’s very confident and always tries to get the ball going forward.” |
STAT ATTACK : Rooney's 200 Following Wayne Rooney's 200th goal for United on Tuesday, in the 4-2 win over Bayer Leverkusen, we unearthed 10 statistics about our no.10's double century. 1) Wayne's 200 goals have arrived in just 406 matches. That’s a strike-rate of 0.49 goals per game. 2) Of his 200 goals, 107 have been netted at Old Trafford (83 away, 10 at neutral grounds). 3) Rooney's been deadliest against Villa and Fulham, scoring 11 times against each club. 4) He's found the net for the Reds against 49 different clubs. The first: Fenerbahce. The most recent: Bayer Leverkusen. 5) It took the England international 120 games and 45 goals before he scored with his head for United (against Arsenal at the Emirates). He’s now scored 22 headers in total. 6) Wayne has scored more goals for United in April (29) than any other month. His tally for September now stands at 14. 7) Of his 200 Reds goals, Rooney has netted eight times after coming off the bench. 8 ) Most of his goals (114) have been scored in the second half of matches. Eighty-six have come in the first period. 9) Three of Wayne's goals have been scored inside the opening 60 seconds of games (vs Wigan Athletic in January 2009, Aston Villa in February 2011 and Queens Park Rangers in December 2011). 10) Rooney's best scoring streak at United is six consecutive games. He netted against West Ham, Aston Villa, AC Milan, Fulham, Liverpool and Bay |
StarBoard: You expect nitwit to say anything sensible? you wicked. |
Where is that @nitlad arguing with me the other day. Our revenue is looking really great. By next year we will match or even surpass Madrid's revenue of this year. It's only a matter of time before we catch up to them. English soccer champions Manchester United have forecast record revenues of between 420 and 430 million pounds ($683.81 million) in 2013-14 helped by new television and sponsorship deals. United, controlled by the American Glazer family, forecast underlying profit of 128-133 million pounds in the period to June 2014. The targets were based on the team finishing third in the English Premier League and reaching the quarter-finals of the Champions League and domestic cups. Revenues in the year to June 2013 came in at 363.2 million pounds ($577.6 million), just ahead of the club's forecast. Profit was 108.6 million pounds, excluding items such as interest and tax payments. |
