Plantago major, commonly referred to as plantain, is a type of weed that originated in Europe and Asia but is now found worldwide. Plantain leaf is not the same as the banana-like fruit called plantain that is found throughout tropical areas; although plantain leaves can be eaten as a salad. Plantain leaf has a rich history of oral and topical medicinal use, particularly for the treatment of skin ailments, and it is sold today as a supplement for a variety of health promoting purposes. As with any herbal product, get your doctor's approval before using plantain leaf. Nutritional Benefits Plantain contains fiber, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sodium, phosphorus, zinc and copper, as well as vitamins A, C and K. It is also a rich source of numerous phytochemicals, including allantoin, glycosides, phenols, salicylic acid and tannins. Phytochemicals are antioxidant compounds found naturally in plants that prevent free radical induced damage in the body and thereby help to prevent and treat disease in humans. The International College of Herbal Medicine states that plantain leaf has anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antibiotic and immune-stimulating properties. Topical Benefits Plantain leaves have antiseptic properties and can be used topically to promote the healing of damaged skin, reduce skin inflammation, stop bleeding, reduce pain and prevent secondary infections of wounds. Plantain can also be applied as a poultice to help soothe bee stings, burns, rashes and hemorrhoids; and to relieve itching from insect bites. In addition, extracts of it can be used as a mouthwash to reduce gum inflammation and gum disease and to treat mouth ulcers. Finally, plantain can be used as an eyewash to help treat conjunctivitis. Considerations Plantain leaf is sold for internal use in fluid extract, tincture, decoction, infusion and dried powder form and the fresh and dried leaves can be consumed as a tea. It is also sold for topical use as an ointment or essential oil. Although plantain leaf is generally considered safe, it is always best to consult with your health-care practitioner before starting any new herbal product. List of Purported Uses According to Phyllis Balch and James Balch, M.D., in their book "Prescription for Nutritional Healing," plantain acts as a diuretic, helping to rid the body of excess water. It also promotes digestive health by helping to ease indigestion and heartburn and treat diarrhea and dysentery. Plantain leaf also soothes the lungs and promotes respiratory health and is used to treat coughs and bronchitis. Additional purported uses for plantain leaf include enhancing circulation, stimulating the uterus, treating cystitis and hay fever and reducing total cholesterol levels. These uses are based on historical use and anecdotal reports however, and they have not yet been substantiated by solid scientific evidence.

If we’re going to make our space colonization dreams a reality, there are still some big hurdles to clear. How are we going to protect ourselves from deadly radiation? How are we going to adapt to the years-long travel? But most importantly, how are going to sip coffee when there’s no gravity? Fortunately, brilliant minds have been toiling day and night to solve that last elusive question, and with this new 3D printed coffee cup, caffeine addicts of Earth can rest easy knowing there’s finally an answer. Zero gravity environments create a curious dilemma for coffee lovers. While it’s not ideal, drinking most beverages out of a bag is a good compromise to prevent free floating fluids from messing up delicate instruments. But the act itself of sipping hot coffee, smelling and tasting it, is more important than just whether or not it gets into your body. So how do you replicate that experience in space? To find a solution, Portland State University researchers spent a year studying how liquid behaves in low gravity to create a mug that could funnel coffee directly into an astronaut’s mouth. The design they came up with, building off of the cup astronaut Don Pettit designed for the International Space Station in 2008, is an odd, angular shoe with a pointed center and a little lip guard. Working in tandem, these pieces guide coffee drops towards the mouth through surface tension and capillary connections whenever lips touch the cup. This extensive breakdown of the project on Wired compares it to a wick. Since the cup is 3D printed in transparent plastic, it can be replicated on stations like the ISS, which already has a 3D printer and recently received an Italian espresso machine. However, the team is still testing the final prototypes, and the current cost of each cup is around $500. They’re reusable, but that is still pretty pricey. That said, the cups could have added benefits that the researchers hope might make them worth it in the long run. The lightweight design could save precious weight and volume. Meanwhile, the relatively inexpensive insight gained from testing and observing how fluids react in the cup could also be applied to other kinds of fluid used in space flight like, say, rocket fuel. So while coffee is very important, just look at all the advanced coffee technology we’ve already developed, when it comes to space travel you have to think a little bigger. Fortunately, this coffee cup might be a frothy, delicious, caffeine-filled stepping stone to even better discoveries. But even if it isn’t, let’s not forget being able to drink coffee in space is still a pretty huge deal.

There’s a lot of debate over women having babies past the age of 35. However, it’s not that uncommon. In fact, one in 10 babies born to women over 35-years of age are born with zero complications to mom or baby. However, doctors and midwives take extra precaution with pregnant women over 35 as they can be more susceptible to certain health concerns such as gestational diabetes, miscarriages, and delivering a baby with chromosomal abnormalities (i.e., Down syndrome). Here are ten facts to keep in mind if you plan to give birth past age 35… 1. Greater Risk of Pregnancy Complications Women who get pregnant past the age of 35 are more prone to developing certain complications during pregnancy—most commonly gestational diabetes and high blood pressure. However, regular doctor’s appointments and quality prenatal care will help monitor and control both conditions if they arise during pregnancy. 2. Healthy Diet is Vital A healthy, balanced diet is vital for all pregnant women, regardless of age. Oftentimes, an older woman is more prone to pregnancy weight gain, which can contribute to further complications and energy drain during her pregnancy. But a well-balanced diet (plus prenatal vitamins) that focuses on whole, natural foods and quality proteins should do its part to prevent excess weight and ensure both mom and baby are properly nourished. 3. Risk of Chromosomal Abnormalities If you’re pregnant past the age of 35-years, your doctor will offer a series of genetic testing to monitor for certain chromosomal abnormalities that increase with older pregnancies. For instance, chorionic villus sampling (CVS), a test performed at 9 to 11 weeks of pregnancy, is 99-percent accurate for detecting Down syndrome and Turner syndrome. 4. Heightened Risk of Miscarriage It’s no secret that women over the age of 35 suffer higher risk of miscarriages and stillbirths compared to younger women. And risk of miscarriage only increases with age, for instance, while women who are 35-years old have a 20-percent chance of miscarrying; those 45-years or older have a 35-percent risk of miscarrying. 5.Higher Incidence of Twin Births Older women also often find themselves with a double surprise—twins! It’s a fact that twin births are more common in pregnant women who are 35-years or older. 6.More Cesarean Sections If you’re 35-years-old or older and pregnant, you have an increased chance of a cesarean section delivery as well. This can be due to the greater likelihood of complications during pregnancy and delivery, including labor issues such as excessive bleeding, prolonged labor (greater than 20 hours), and stalled labor. 7.Drastic Emotional Changes During Pregnancy Hardly any new mother is quite prepared for the complete life transformation that comes with pregnancy or new motherhood. Hormone fluctuations are almost always the prime source of the emotional rollercoaster of pregnancy. However, the older the woman; the more stress the body will often experience. 8.Egg Quality Declines As women age, we experience a decline in our fertility, which means we ovulate less regularly or miss the occasional egg release completely. Egg quality begins to wane between age 30 and 40, with genetic egg complications becoming more likely and reducing the chances of conception. 9.It May Take Longer To Conceive In addition to lowered fertility after the age of 35, there are also more difficulties with timing conception. For instance, where it can take a couple in their 20s just a few months to conceive, couples over 35 often need years to become pregnant. 10.Remember, Every Woman is Different When it comes down to age and pregnancy, 35 is just a number and every woman’s biological age differs from her number age. While many women have a family history of difficult conception; others will be able to conceive quite easily into their 40s due to stellar diet and regular exercise.
