Politics / Shock Wave From The New Generation by aramadaokunrin(m): 11:56pm On Oct 15, 2020
I am in my mid 40's and my generation has taken all the sh*t thrown at us by the government( both past & present). We have had to eat whatever they cook, palatable or not through bad policies and governance.
But no balls to stand up to them....but with what i ve seen so far during this protests....Nigeria has a future, and I dare to say a bright one at that.
What we couldn't do,the upcoming generation has shown like a million Stars to give us hope.
We'll take back our country! Not through violence but through a superior level of reasoning, planning and strategy.
2023 came rather early for Nigerians,we will not be tired or weary. The road is still far but our strength shall be renewed and we'll mount up with wings like the Eagle.
The level of coordination demonstrated so far shows Nigeria can work if the principalities and powers in our nation can take their claws away from our jugular.
Forward ever, backward never.

I have spoken.

Family / 4 Types Of Abuse In Marriage And How To Recognize Them by aramadaokunrin(m): 1:40pm On Oct 14, 2017
How To Recognize Abuse is a complex concept, one that is easily defined and yet very difficult to understand and identify. Many who have experienced abuse in any form for long periods of time or from a number of people in their lives have difficulty distinguishing unhealthy relationship patterns and the dangers of prolonged abuse. The term “abuse” covers a broad spectrum of behaviors and actions thus making it difficult to define a specific number of types. The following examples are the most commonly recognized forms of abuse in a partnership, marriage, or long-term relationship.

Emotional abuse

Emotional abuse is perhaps the vaguest type of abuse to which an individual can be exposed. Emotional pain and hurt are not uncommon in relationships – it is human to feel negative emotions in response to arguments or unpleasant events in a relationship. While it is natural to feel emotional responses, it is not healthy or natural to feel as if your thoughts, feelings, and emotions are regularly threatened by your loved one. Emotional abuse is a consistent denial of your right to express your feelings. It is a violation or ridicule of your most important values and beliefs. Some warning signs that you may be experiencing this type of abuse are:
◾Withholding of approval or support as a form of punishment,
◾Criticism, belittling, name calling, and yelling,
◾Regular threats to leave or being told to leave,
◾Invasions of privacy, and
◾Elimination of support by preventing contact with friends and family.

Psychological abuse

Psychological abuse is also difficult to define as it encompasses a spectrum of abuse that offers no obvious physical evidence. Psychological abuse can be included as an element of emotional or verbal abuse, making it difficult to define it as a distinctly different form. Many experience this kind of abuse in the form of restriction, belittlement, unrealistic demands, or threats. It can also include things such as withholding affection/information in order to extract certain behavior from the individual being abused. Many of the signs of this type of abuse are similar to those of emotional abuse. Examples include:
◾Refusal to socialize with the victim,
◾Taking car or house keys from the victim to prevent escape or safety,
◾Threatening to take the children,
◾Playing mind games, and
◾Ignoring or minimizing the victim’s feelings.

4 Types Of Abuse And How To Recognize Them

Verbal abuse

Verbal abuse is often the mildest form of abuse with overt and obvious evidence. While some verbal abuse is practiced in secret or when no one is around, many verbal abusers become comfortable with making statements around friends, family, and in public settings. Behavior can range from small, repetitive comments to loud, angry shouting meant to belittle the one on the receiving end of the comments. As with the two previous forms of abuse, verbal abuse shares similar characteristics and warning signs.

Physical abuse

Physical abuse is the most common and obvious form of abuse. Visible markings; cuts, bruises, contusions, and other long-lasting forms of evidence can be present. However, some overt forms of evidence are not present for extended periods of time. Many people experiencing physical abuse are exposed to pushing, shoving, slapping, biting, kicking, strangling, punching, or abandonment. An abuser may subject the victim to being locked out of the house, deprived of food, medicine, or sleep, or refusal to help if the victim is sick or injured. Physical abuse can include harm that is intentional or harm that is inflicted without the intent of hurting the individual. Repeated abuse can lead to a myriad of physical and mental health issues including brain injury, heart conditions, respiratory issues, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and anxiety. Neglect, a form of physical abuse, is the withdrawal of or refusal to support the victim. Like some other forms of abuse, it is often difficult to assess and diagnose properly.

Sexual abuse, a very complex form of abuse, is not necessarily a category alone but rather is a combination of physical, psychological, and emotional abuse, particularly in long-term relationships. It may present in the following ways:
◾Anger or jealousy,
◾Criticism sexually,
◾Withholding sex or affect to hurt or punish someone,
◾Publicly showing interest in others,
◾Forcing unwanted sexual acts or forcing sex after beating, or
◾Forcing any part of sex using guilt, coercion, or manipulation.

What can you do?

If you are experiencing characteristics of unhealthy relationships, do not be afraid to ask for help. Be sure to have a trusted friend or family member on whom you can rely. It is not weak or embarrassing to ask for help when you need it. And trust your instincts! If you feel uneasy about going home or fearful of your spouse or partner, take steps to ensure your safety. This could include having a friend with you upon returning home so you are not alone, or, in severe circumstances, going to the home of a loved one or to a domestic violence shelter rather than going home. Above all else, know you are not alone! If you are experiencing the characteristics of abuse, there are those who can help and support you. While reaching out can seem like an impossible and perhaps dangerous task, know there is help ready and waiting for you.
Nairaland / General / Re: What Is The Difference Between The Exclusive And Concurrent List by aramadaokunrin(m): 5:15pm On Oct 13, 2017
In more simple terms:

"Exclusive power," refers to the powers of the federal government alone. Examples of exclusive power/federal power are those regarding matters of defense, foreign affairs, overseas trade, etc.

"Concurrent powers," are those powers which are shared by both federal and state governments, both may act or intervene, but the federal government overrides the state if there is conflict.

"Residual powers," are those that are left to, or designated to the states. In other words, everything that is, "left over." Examples of residual powers are those regarding civil law, urban planning, property issues, etc.

RESIDUAL LIST: These areas are the leftover powers not included in either the exclusive or the concurrent list. If powers in the residual list are left for the regions or states as is done in some constitutions, that will render the central weak and vice versa. In some constitutions, residual powers are exercised by both levels of government. Such matters in the residual list in Nigeria include chieftaincy matters.

Nairaland / General / Share Your One Night Stand Experience by aramadaokunrin(m): 2:34pm On Aug 25, 2017
'He cried and told me he was married': People share the WORST one night stands they've experienced in cringe-worthy confessions
•People have shared their one night stand horror stories on secret app Whisper
•The disastrous tales reveal what happens when no-strings-attached went wrong
•Some people expected commitment after spending just one night with someone
•One got caught sneaking out to avoid the morning-after awkwardness
One night stands are often associated with the walk of shame however, they are nothing compared to these horror stories.

In a new thread on secret sharing app Whisper people have revealed their worst experiences of casual sex.

Making use of the app's anonymity these singletons spare no sordid details of their flings.

In one toe-curling account a woman revealed that after a night of passion she awoke to her companion sobbing, admitting he was actually married and felt terrible about their tryst.

Another lover revealed that he'd lied about his age and the woman had been too drunk to realise the night before.

Others commented on how the other party took their one night stands too seriously, asking their partners for commitment after their no-strings-attached night.

What are your takes on one night stand. Is it worth it? Do married people indulge in it?

Men and women have been taking to Imgur to share their most creative solutions to everyday woes - including using peppers as makeshift cups, hair brushes as wing mirrors and a rather cunning way of texting while in school.

Other canny hacks included using a lock of hair as an eye mask to catch some sleep on a plane and even creating their own swimming pool on a balcony.

HeOrShe:

Straight to the point. I recently moved to a compound where I picked one room apartment managing my life with my job. After I moved in I was shown the bathroom and toilet and kitchen am to share with another tenant.

Is one storey building which the up was taking by d landlord and the ground floor is for me and one man and his wife. So we are not much. Maybe because before I moved in, my neighbour has been staying alone at d ground floor that they don't lock d bathroom while bathing especially the woman since d husband hardly stays around.

The woman should be in her late 20s or early 30s with a son. She still appears sexy much like other young ladies.

One day I woke up late and as I move out towards d bathroom the door was open and the bathroom is calm so I was not expecting somebody inside but as I walk pass behold my neighbours wife naked bathing. I immediately turned back and left. This has continued that she don't even care.

Sometimes while am cooking she will be taking her bath while d door will be partially closed or not.

But I observed if her husband is around she will be locking d bathroom very well while bathing but once her husband is off she continues. I don't know what she has in mind and I don't know what to do about it. Am scared one day am going to have sex with the woman.

Please what will I do.

Nairaland / General / These Reasons Why Breakfast Is Important Will Shock You by aramadaokunrin(m): 8:21am On Aug 18, 2017
Why breakfast is SO important: Teens who skip their first meal will have weaker bones, smaller brains and slower metabolism for life
•A new study proves breakfast is essential for a child or teen to develop properly
•When kids do not eat breakfast they develop iron, folate, calcium and iodine deficiencies
•These deficiencies can cause them to have serious medical issues, such as slow brain function
It's something nutritionists have been banging on about for years.

But now a study has provided even clearer evidence: breakfast really is the most important meal of the day.

The research by King's College London found that starting the morning with a meal is particularly important for teenagers and children.

Young people who skip breakfast could leave themselves open to severe issues with development, that could affect them later on in life.

Specifically, they do not get enough iron, folate, calcium or iodine - which can leave them with low brain function and lacking in energy, among other health problems.
They found that a quarter of kids between ages 11 and 18 skipped breakfast everyday and seven percent of those between four and 10 did the same.

A third of those kids who skip it are not getting enough iron while about a fifth are not getting enough calcium or iodine. And about 7 percent do not get enough folate.

Study researcher Dr Gerda Pot said: 'This study provides evidence that breakfast is key for parents to ensure that their children are getting the nutrition they need.'

Iron, folate, calcium and iodine deficiencies can translate to a host of medical issues.

If a child does not get enough iron - which circulates oxygen throughout the body - their body cannot produce enough oxygen-carrying red blood cells that are healthy.

When they do not have enough oxygen, they become fatigued.

The exhaustion that ensues from not having enough oxygen can affect how well their brain functions as well as their immune system's ability to keep the body healthy and infection-free.

Nairaland / General / What The Future Hold For Conte-chelsea Coach by aramadaokunrin(m): 8:31am On Aug 14, 2017
History tells us Antonio Conte should be fearing for his job

No-one saw it coming.

Chelsea, the reigning Premier League champions, losing at home to Burnley (that's Burnley, the team that won once away in the whole of 2016-17) on the opening weekend of the Premier League season.

It is, of course, very early days. But should Antonio Conte be worried?

History suggests he should.

It's been eight years since a side staged a successful defence of the Premier League title, Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson in 2008-09.

And going back even further, since 2006-07 the Scot is one of only two managers - along with Manchester City's Manuel Pellegrini - to win the title and still be in his job come the end of the following May.

Carlo Ancelotti (Chelsea, 2009-10), Roberto Mancini (Manchester City, 2011-12), Jose Mourinho (Chelsea, 2014-15) and Claudio Ranieri (Leicester, 2015-16) were all gone 12 months after winning English top flight's biggest prize.

That's four of the six title-winning managers before Conte

Premier League champion one year, gone the next

Four of last six title-winning bosses have been gone within 12 months
There's also David Moyes, who took over a side just crowned champions under the retiring Ferguson but who failed to make it to the end of his first season in charge.

And if that's not enough to worry Chelsea's Italian manager, what about these stats?

Chelsea are only the second reigning Premier League champions to lose the opening game of the following campaign (after Leicester last season).

They are also the first title holders to concede three goals in the opening game of the next season, and the first side to pick up two red cards on day one.

Worrying times.

Sports / What Is The New ABBA Penalty Shootout Format Used At Community Shield by aramadaokunrin(m): 8:31am On Aug 07, 2017
The new 'ABBA' penalty shoot-out format was used for Sunday's Community Shield clash between Chelsea and Arsenal.

With the match ending all square after 90 minutes, the London rivals headed straight into a shoot-out to decide the winner and a new system, aimed at being fairer on the team taking the second penalty, was trialled.

The system is based on the format used in tennis tie-breaks, with the team taking the first kick in each pair of kicks alternating, so AB BA AB BA and so on instead of AB AB AB AB etc.

"The FA has today announced that a different order of kicks for Kicks from the Penalty Mark (KFPM) will be trialled at Sunday's FA Community Shield supported by McDonald's - the first time the new format will be used competitively in the country," the FA said in a statement
The new format will be used across all English Football League tournaments from this season but the first chance to see the system at work could now come this weekend at Wembley.

FIFA and UEFA have trialled the system on the international stage and now it will be introduced in the EFL Cup, EFL trophy and playoffs at the end of the season.

Traditionally, English clubs have used the ABAB system, with each team taking it in terms to strike a spot kick.
The thinking behind the new system is the idea that there is greater mental pressure on the player taking the second kick in the ABAB format, thus the advantage for the team striking first being minimised by using ABBA.
IFAB have identified a theory that the current arrangements for penalty kicks potentially provide an unfair advantage to the team taking the first kick so we are keen to see if the new system has an impact on one of the most discussed issues in football
“We all want football matches to be decided in a fair and consistent manner and I am sure the new system will add an interesting dynamic to the conclusion of matches in our competitions if required.”

What is your take on the new system?

Personally, I don't fancy it at all.....
Travel / Why A Plane Can Still Make The Runway From 38,000ft Even If All The Engines Fail by aramadaokunrin(m): 2:03pm On Jun 18, 2017
FOR ALL FREQUENT FLYERS:
•An airline captain explains that all pilots are trained in gliding techniques
•Another pilot explains why engine failure doesn't mean 'instant calamity'
•In 1982 a British Airways Boeing 747 glided from 37,000ft to 12,000ft

There is no doubt at all that the experience of being on a passenger plane during a total engine failure is never going to be pleasant.

But experienced pilots have revealed how this scenario doesn’t necessarily mean disaster – because even huge airliners can glide a very long way, meaning that while over land there will always be a good chance of making it to a runway.

One serving long-haul captain based in the UK explained to MailOnline Travel that ‘typically a jet can glide about two miles for each 1,000ft of altitude’.
He continued: ‘So at 40,000ft cruise altitude the range of the aircraft to touchdown is about 80 miles.’

He added: ‘So pilots are trained in gliding techniques, but always with the idea that it buys time to get the engines re-started as the judgement needed to successfully land with zero power from 40,000 feet makes it a tricky business.’
Patrick Smith, author of Cockpit Confidential, also has some reassuring thoughts on the subject.

He writes: ‘There’s no greater prospect of instant calamity than switching off the engine in your car when coasting downhill. The car keeps going, and a plane will too.’

He also reveals that passenger jets glide on most journeys.

He writes: ‘It’s not the least bit uncommon for jets to descend at what a pilot calls “flight idle,” with the engines run back to a zero-thrust condition. They’re still operating and powering crucial systems, but providing no push. You’ve been gliding many times without knowing it. It happens on just about every flight.

‘Obviously an idle-thrust glide is different from the engines quitting outright, but even then, the glide itself would be no different.’

Pilots used this technique to descend the aircraft from cruise altitude for the approach. When the engine note changes and the noise reduces that is what 'flight idle' feels like.

There have been several well-publicised gliding manoeuvres performed by commercial pilots over the years.

The most famous is undoubtedly the one executed by Captain Chesley ‘Sully’ Sullenberger in 2009, when he glided his A320 into New York’s Hudson following a bird strike that led to total engine failure.

Nairaland / General / Buried Alive In Coffin!!!.....u Won't Believe What Happened Next(pix). by aramadaokunrin(m): 12:18pm On Jun 18, 2017
A husband kissed his wife goodbye before being buried in a coffin under a city street.

Friends and family closed the lid of the casket and dumped soil on top of it today after John Edwards climbed inside the box and laid down.

The pensioner is to spend three days inside the coffin in a hole dug with a JCB outside a church in Belfast.

But he will at least have the benefit of mod cons including broadband internet.
John hopes the stunt will help raise awareness for those suffering from addiction and depression .

The former addict founded the charity Walking Free, which helps people who are suicidal and those with addiction.
I'm a former addict and I've been clean and sober for 25 years," John said.

"I'm making a very large coffin, I'm burying it in East Belfast and I'm going to live in it for three days."
During his three-day stint in the coffin, John will be broadcasting stories of hope from his temporary underground home to help those who are struggling.

"I know this is a radical move but people are continually contacting me who are either suicidal or who know friends or family who are," he told Belfast Live .

"My plan is to speak to them from the grave before they get there and show them hope."
John will take calls, emails, Skype and texts from people around the world, who in turn will share their stories, live streaming through the coffin.

It is hoped the feed will reach millions around the world.

"People will communicate with me how they have navigated and overcome trauma, suicide attempts, coping with addicted children or family members as well as addiction to substance and behavior," he said.
John, a committed Christian who has been happily married to wife Trish for 20 years, said he is both privileged and humbled to help those who've lost hope.

Willowfield rector David McClay said: "John is going into the coffin on Ash Wednesday which marks the start of Lent. The season of Lent is one when Christians talk about dying to ourselves.

"But the message from the grave is one of hope - hope for those who are struggling with addictions, hope for those who feel life is hopeless, and hope of life that is eternal.
"John knows that he is going to be buried on March 1. The rest of us don't know when we will be buried, when our lives will end - but for every Christian there is the confident hope of life forever because of what Jesus has won for us on the cross.

"He did it so that we don't have to pay the price for our sin and guilt. John Edwards demonstrates the amazing transformation that Jesus can bring to our lives. I invite you to join in the live streaming of this event and hear for yourself."

Since some gullible Nigerians fell for his cheap lies and self serving speech at last years edition of the platform, Peter obi returned again to continue with his lies this year only to forget that every thing now lives on the internet. Peter obi wants to keep preaching about savings when he cant tell us how his savings affected the common Anambra man or transformed the state during his time as governor.
Don't forget he once claimed his flat at Osbourne towers belongs to his wife after he was busted by the EFCC but today he is now claiming that EFCC did not find anything there.
Let the gullible Nigerian youths keep swallowing anything thrown at them by these politicians.

Here are photo evidence that Peter obi did not have one watch for 17 years!

Politics / Why Peter Obi Must Be President Come 2019 by aramadaokunrin(m): 2:19pm On May 01, 2017
I have thought about this matter for a long time now and I am convinced that Peter Obi should be the next Nigerian President. I have never met this man one-on-one so don't say I have been settled as Nigerian will always infer atimes.
Secondly, am not from the SE so don't say "na wee wee arrangement".

I am just a de-tribalized Nigerian that believe the time is now or never. I also believe that we owe the SE an unreserved apology over the Biafran war that rages between 1967-1970.I have read a handful of the books that captured what actually happened back then and I have had the opportunity to discuss with some of the people that were affected during the war.(Story for another day).

Back to the reasons why Peter Obi must be president: I can see the Caption already
1. He is a former Governor so he understands the workings of government.
2. He lives a simple life(in and out of government)
3. A firm believer in savings.
4. A very sound Economist. Understands how we can use our population and what we have to our advantage.
5. From the SE(they have been deprived for too long).SE must have a shot at the Presidency....the time is now.
6. He is not corrupt
7. He is a graduate and has attended some of the best schools in the World.
8. He's an orator-he can pass across his plans to the people in simple terms
9. He is well travelled.
10. He is not poor. He has handled money. People that has not really managed money prior to getting into government has demonstrated that they cannot be trusted with money.

Japan's mega-sinkhole is repaired in just a WEEK (remember that next time you’re caught up in roadworks or hit another pot hole)
•Constructions teams worked around the clock to fix the damage in the city of Fukuoka
•The gaping chasm measured around 30 metres wide and 15 metres deep
•Social media users have voiced their amazement after it opened so fast
•The city's mayor, Soichiro Takashima, apologized for the inconvenience

While motorists around the world endure the misery of pothole damage, authorities in Japan have given a lesson in efficiency - by fixing a huge sinkhole in just one week.

The gaping chasm measured around 30 metres wide and 15 metres deep, yet now the road is completely reopened.

Many people have expressed their amazement at the fast repair work.

Such repairs will take forever in Nigeria, not because there is no resources but simply CORRUPTION......

Can Hillary Clinton Still Win? Electoral College To Vote In December After Candidate Wins Popular Vote

Hillary Clinton supporters aren’t ready to give up hope. A Change.org petition created Wednesday wants the Electoral College to vote for the Democratic candidate instead of President-elect Donald Trump.

“On Dec. 19, the electors of the Electoral College will cast their ballots. If they all vote the way their states voted, Donald Trump will win,” the petition reads. “However, they can vote for Hillary Clinton if they choose. Even in states where that is not allowed, their vote would still be counted, they would simply pay a small fine, which we can be sure Clinton supporters will be glad to pay!”

The petition doesn’t want the electors to vote for the New York businessman. “Mr. Trump is unfit to serve,” the petition says. “His scapegoating of so many Americans, and his impulsivity, bullying, lying, admitted history of sexual assault, and utter lack of experience make him a danger to the republic.”

The petition adds Clinton should be president because she won the popular vote. “There is no reason Trump should be president,” it says. “She won the popular vote.” The latest poll showed Clinton had 400,000 more votes than Trump, according to CBS News, CNN and NBC News.

The problem with the plea is the way the Electoral College works. When Americans head to the polls on Election Day, they vote to elect people of the Electoral College. The amount of electors each state has is based on its population. Trump received 290 votes under the Electorial College system, while Clinton won 228 votes.

There is a chance that electors can “go rogue.” It even has a name: “Faithless elector.” But it rarely happens. The last time this occurred was in 2008. Instead voting for Democratic candidate John Kerry, an elector in Minnesota cast a vote for John Edwards. It’s assumed this was an oversight, the New York Times reported.
The Electoral College vote takes place on the first Monday after the second Wednesday in December. For this election, that makes the date Dec. 19.

By Friday, the petition had 1.3 million signatures. It has a goal of 4.5 million.
Romance / If Your One-night Stand Develops Health Issues In Your Apartment, what Do You Do? by aramadaokunrin(m): 10:51am On Nov 05, 2016
There has been cases in which a one-night stand experience turned out to be a nightmare. What do you do in that instance? Stories abound about male/female one night stand developing issues and not necessarily a case of murder or manslaughter. Do you inform the police or rush him/her to the nearest hospital. Has it ever happened to you.
It actually happened to a friend whose one night stand developed a serious asthmatic attack in the middle of the night due to so much excitement during activities in between the sheet. My friend was in total confusion but luckily for him, the lady in question has her inhaler on hand and it saved the day.My friend swore he will never carry ashy again; but now he's back in the business. What if her inhaler was not available? Nairaland / General / How They Destroyed Corruption In Singapore by aramadaokunrin(m): 10:23pm On Oct 31, 2016
Corruption is a scourge that can never be tolerated. Countries have tried all ways to combat it. They create anti-corruption agencies. They pass strong laws. They promulgate codes of conduct for public officials. Companies pledge to conduct business cleanly. Yet often corruption remains endemic, a cancer in the society. How then has Singapore achieved some measure of success in eradicating corruption? I put it down to four factors.

First, we inherited a clean and working system from the British colonial government. We had many compelling reasons to want to end colonial rule and to be masters of our own destiny. But to their credit, the British left Singapore with a working system and sound institutions - English laws, a working civil service, and an efficient and honest judiciary. Importantly, the Colonial Service officers upheld high standards. People like Sir William Goode, our last governor and first head of state, had a sense of duty and stewardship. After Singapore, Goode served as Governor of North Borneo, now the state of Sabah in Malaysia. He left an impression in North Borneo, as in Singapore. Even a generation later, the people of Sabah still remembered him fondly.

Second, when the British left, our pioneer leaders were determined to keep the system clean. The People's Action Party (PAP) first came to power in 1959, when Singapore attained self-government. However, it was by no means a no-brainer for the PAP to fight to win the 1959 General Election.

The country faced a myriad of problems: poverty, poor public health, an acute housing shortage, a stagnant economy and an exploding population. Did the PAP want to inherit these overwhelming problems? Why not become a strong opposition party and let another party govern and fail?

In the end, what decided the issue for Mr Lee Kuan Yew, our founding Prime Minister, and his team was the overriding need to prevent the public service from going corrupt. One term of an incompetent, corrupt government and Humpty Dumpty could never be put together again. So the PAP fought to win and formed the Government. When they took their oath of office, Mr Lee and his PAP colleagues wore white shirts and white trousers. It symbolised their determination to keep the Government clean and incorruptible. That has set the tone for Singapore ever since.

Third, with strong political will, we institutionalised a robust, comprehensive anti-corruption framework that spans laws, enforcement, the public service and public outreach. We enacted the Prevention of Corruption Act (PCA), which puts the burden of proof on the accused to show that he acquired his wealth legally. Any unexplained wealth disproportionate to known sources of income is presumed to be from graft and can be confiscated.
Fourth, we have over time developed a society and culture that eschews corruption. Singaporeans expect and demand a clean system. They do not condone giving or accepting "social lubricants" to get things done. They readily report corrupt practices when they encounter them. Singaporeans trust that the law applies to all and that the Government will enforce the laws without fear or favour, even when it may be awkward or embarrassing. Businesses have confidence that, in Singapore, rules are transparent and fairly applied. The story is told of a businessman who visited Singapore from an Asian country used to different operating norms. He left puzzled and disturbed that he could not discover the going rate for bribes to officers at different levels of government. He concluded wrongly that the prices must be very high.

Singapore has achieved some success eradicating corruption, but we are under no illusions that we have permanently and completely solved the problem. Corruption is driven by human nature and greed. However strict the rules and tight the system, some individuals will sometimes still be tempted to transgress. When they do, we make sure they are caught and severely dealt with. Two years ago, we charged an assistant director from the CPIB itself with misappropriating $1.7 million.

We keep our system clean not just for ourselves, but also to uphold our international reputation. Thus we deal strictly also with those who use financial institutions in Singapore to launder money or transact ill-gotten gains from corruption. We are zealous in protecting the integrity of our financial centre and business hub.

There is a Chinese proverb: "If the top beam is askew, the bottom beams will be crooked." Keeping a system clean must start at the very top. A Singapore Armed Forces officer, on a course overseas, was once asked by his classmate how Singapore kept its system clean. He explained our arrangements and the central role of the CPIB. His classmate asked a follow-up question: But to whom does the CPIB report? The Singaporean ingenuously replied that the CPIB reported directly to the prime minister. This elicited further puzzlement. Much later, the Singaporean understood why. The real question he was being asked was, who guards the guardian?

There is no formula to solve this ancient riddle, but we are determined to uphold the highest standards of integrity from the top level of the Government down. In 1996, rumours spread that Mr Lee and I had received improper discounts on property purchases. The then Prime Minister, Mr Goh Chok Tong, ordered a full investigation, which found that there had been nothing improper. He brought the issue to Parliament, which held a full debate lasting three days.

Both Mr Lee and I spoke. In his statement, Mr Lee said, "I take pride and satisfaction that the question of my two purchases and those of the Deputy Prime Minister, my son, has been subjected to, and not exempted from, scrutiny... It is most important that Singapore remains a place where no one is above scrutiny, that any question of integrity of a minister, however senior, that he has gained benefits either through influence or corrupt practices, be investigated."

Trust is slow to build, but fast to lose. We have spent more than 50 years building up confidence in Singapore. The integrity of the Government, the system and the men and women in charge has been key to Singapore's success. We are determined that that integrity and reputation must never be undermined and will long remain a competitive edge and a source of pride for Singapore.
