The problem of lack of social amenities is not perculiar to OAU, virtually, every Nigerian University has that problem. I just graduated from the Dept of Mech Eng., FUTO myself, while I can say using the Nigerian standards, it's ok but it is far from what I had expected and wanted. I know after my service, I will be going for some refresher certification programmes in my field to sharpen my competitive edge in the labour market.When people argue about all hands not being equal, I usually say that sentiments does not apply when there is a need to raise funds by any management in order to cater for pressing needs, the only thing SUG can push for is a reduction or some policies put in place to cushion the effects of the increment.
Government funding of the Universities can never be enough no matter how much they try. Take the American and British Universities for instance, the latter always dominate any world ranking, do you know why?
While the US government public investment in education, relative to GDP, is similar to that of the UK, eye-popping tuition fees & generous philantropists( alumni & coperate bodies) have endowed American Higher education with more than six times more private investment.
Take for instance, as at 2006 while Oxford and Cambridge had endowment funds worth about $11billion each Yale had $23billion while that of Harvad was $35billion. Dozens of other American Universities boast of funds valued at more than $1billion. Even Britains wealthiest Universities are poor by comparison. And you wonder why American Universities dominate any world ranking. School with such funds in their coffers can fund big projects in the campus, embark on very expensive research, equip their labs with the most modern facilities and equipments and attract big budget projects and fundings from multi-national coperations. OAU students need to look at the bigger picture, it is not about the much hated Faborode,our schools need serious funding to cope with the teaming numbers they admit yearly. How many of the senior lecturers even go on sabbaticals these days, even the junior ones do not go on refresher courses, what about the obsolete facilities and equipment in the schools, our lecture halls are like overcrowded markets. I usually tell my course mates that engineering in Nigerian Universities is shitty, I dont care how many "greatest OAU" anyone yells, their situation is no different from any other Nigerian University, period! Going on strikes or engaging in activities that can lead to shutting down the school will only amplify the problem, other schools have already started writing their exams, OAU students should stop being myopic with their views and face the real issues and not flaky tissues like "all hands are not equal and stuff" nobody will listen to that line of argument. Appeal to Faborode's interests and I tell you, he will compromise his stance to listen what the SUG guys have to say. But if you lot want to get unruly and talk about the school's interest as it concerns you alone without highlighting his own efforts to better the school as it relates to him raising funds, then you lot will hang around your house for a very long time to come.
