Traditional Igbo concept of leadership is theocracy rather than monarchy. The ascription of the word "king" to Eze is a colonial making. Etymologically, " Zee" in Igbo means to avoid out of reverence. Hence "Onye Nze" means a revered person. Therefore, Eze is more of a holy person or a priest than a king.
