Growing up, I barely knew anything about Shiites, other than the usual conspiracy theories about how evil they are. So because of this war, I decided to do a deep dive on what Shia is all about. Basically, the Shia sect were originally a group of Muslims who believed that after the death of Prophet Muhammad, his cousin Ali bin Abu-Talib should have become the leader of Muslims (this is a reasonable stance), but the other Muslims chose Abubakar since he was the one whom the prophet regarded as his deputy during his life (this is also reasonable). The problem started when Ali was killed and Mua'awiyya hijacked the leadership position. Shiites believe Hassan or Hussein, who were the grandchildren of the prophet, should have become the leader. But Hassan and Hussein refused to accept Mu'awiyya; they fled the city of Mecca, and Mu'awiyya hunted them with 3,000 men and murdered them in the most gruesome means possible. He killed all 71 of Hussein's family and companions.

This was where conventional Shia Islam was born. those who defied the brutality of Mu'awiyya and chose death over servitude. This is the very foundation on which Shia Islam is built. Do not oppress, and do not be oppressed. So when Israel was oppressing Palestinians, they took it upon themselves to be their protectors. When Blacks were oppressed in South Africa during apartheid, Iran was the first to offer help. When they arrested hundreds of American soldiers during the revolution, Khomenei released only women and Black soldiers (he told them they suffered enough).

So if the US and Israel think they can threaten, kill, or bribe Shiites into submission, they are in for a big disappointment. These are people whose faith is built on sacrifice and blood.

You have a point, in a way. But you must also understand that the topography and weather of most of the South makes industrial crop farming a bit more difficult than in the North. Also, availability of land and farm inputs. Take the SE for instance, to get hectares of land for farming isn't easy. But then, I blame the regional government...

The 32 nations that make up the International Energy Agency (IEA) have unanimously agreed to release 400 million barrels of oil from their emergency reserves. This coordinated action aims to stabilize global oil markets that have been severely disrupted by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

The decision followed an emergency meeting held yesterday, called by the IEA Executive Director to evaluate the rapidly evolving market situation and determine how best to counter the supply shortfalls caused by the conflict.

IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol emphasized the scale of the challenge, noting that the current market pressures are unlike anything previously encountered. He praised member countries for acting collectively and decisively, highlighting that global markets require global solutions. Birol also reiterated that safeguarding energy security has been central to the IEA’s mission since its founding.

Each member country will release its share of emergency stocks according to its own national circumstances. Some nations are also preparing additional measures to reinforce the collective response.

IEA members collectively hold more than 1.2 billion barrels in emergency reserves, along with another 600 million barrels in industry-held stocks mandated by governments. This marks the sixth coordinated stock release since the IEA was established in 1974, with previous actions occurring in 1991, 2005, 2011, and twice in 2022.

The conflict that erupted on 28 February 2026 has severely restricted oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz. Current export volumes of crude and refined products have fallen to less than 10% of what they were before the crisis, forcing many operators in the region to scale back or halt production.

In 2025, roughly 20 million barrels per day—about a quarter of the world’s seaborne oil trade—passed through the Strait of Hormuz. With limited alternatives for rerouting these flows, the disruption poses a significant threat to global supply.

The IEA Secretariat will release more details on how the stock release will be carried out. It will continue monitoring global oil and gas markets closely and provide further guidance to member governments as needed.
