ROLES OF A TEACHER IN ACHIEVING ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE AMONG NIGERIA STUDENTS INTRODUCTION In Nigeria today, majority of the corps members are posted to schools with the aim of passing knowledge to the students of those schools so as to ensure there is adequate improvement in our educational sector all over the country. This singular fact made me and my colleagues choose this topic for our group presentation so as to enlighten our fellow corps members here on what is expected of them in their various Places of Primary Assignment [secondary schools]. SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE STUDY This presentation will be limited to the primary and secondary schools as well as their respective teachers. DEFINITION OF TERMS TEACHER: According to the Longman English dictionary, a teacher is a person who makes teaching as his/her job. These are the people that pass knowledge from one generation to another. STUDENT: This can be simply defined as someone that studies in an institution of leaning. While ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE is a state of being extremely good in the field of study. In order to achieve this so called academic excellence among our students, there are some roles that need to be performed by their teachers. And such roles include but not limited to: 1. Acquiring teaching skill: The first role that needs to be performed by a potential teacher is to attend teachers college or university so as to acquire relevant skill that will be needed in performing their professional duties. 2. He must be very good at the subject he will be taking in the classroom. 3. The teacher must be fully prepared and ready to go to class and teach the students regularly. 4. Maintaining a two way communication with his students in class: Communication with students in class should be based on two directions. Teacher should always seek the opinion of the students on the topic he/she will be discussing with them instead of him/her being the only one talking in the classroom. 5. Teacher should give assignment and classwork to the students regularly. This will serve as a means of testing the level of their understanding of what you have been teaching them. 6. Establish good relationship with the students: this will enable the students to communicate freely with their teachers without fears of being reprimanded. And mind you, this should not lead to revealing of confidential information to the students. QUALITIES OF A GOOD TEACHER 1. A good teacher must have passion for teaching. 2. A good teacher must be dedicated: He needs to be showing up every day and spending necessary time to provide his students with the best education. 3. He must be forgiving: A good teacher should try and quickly put incidence with his students or other teachers behind so as not to allow it to affect his teaching in classroom. 4. A good teacher must be joyful: This has to do with coming to class each day in a good mood and be very happy about doing his job. 5. A good teacher must be accountable: This has to do with holding yourself to the same expectations and standard as you hold your students. 6. A good teacher must be compassionate: That is recognizing that your students have problems outside of school, and making the necessary adjustment to help them through those issues. 7. A good teacher must be trustworthy: this is the ability to get other people around you to believe in you and what you are doing. A good teacher must gain the trust of both their students and the parents. Any distrust will negatively impact the classroom teaching. 8. A good teacher must possess organization and communication skills. MY STUDENTS REFUSED TO BE MENTORED I am serving in a Government Secondary School in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State located in the Northwestern part of the country. I have been allocated to teach SS1 classes. Because of my discipline, I was given economics as a subject to teach. Ever since my first day in the school, I have been observing the general activities of the school. I discovered that the future of the students is none of the concern of the staffs. Once a corper has been given a subject to teach, there is no supervision to know may be such corper is capable of taking the subject or not. As we all know, not all the corps members were trained to be teachers. There is no way we corps members can teach the students perfectly without little guidance from permanent teachers in the school who are more experienced than us. As a potential mentor that believe in a mentoring the younger generation, my favourite quote is “if a young person is mentored, he stands a better chance to succeed” and that is why I am passionate about mentoring. I always use like 15 minutes after the time allocated for my period to give my students words of encouragement. I always encourage them to be determined and focus on their education. I told them my story. How I moved from the second to the last position in my class when I was in JSS1 and later graduated as the best student in my class in SS3. But there is something that is common to these students, their environment is deceiving them, they rarely see beyond Birnin Kebbi. Majority of them won’t pay attention to the message I am always trying to pass across. Instead they will be chorusing “Uncle we are tired, your time is up”. I will keep trying my best because I will like to leave a good legacy behind before my real time is up –Gbadegesin Kazeem ARTIX MENTOR #DiaryofaKebbiCorper www.corperdiary.com |

Ramadan Mubarak to our brothers and sisters in Islam. |
10 Tips to get the best out of the blessed last 10 Nights of Ramadan 1. No matter how good or bad your Ramadan went, enter the last 10 Days well prepared, with pure intentions, full energy and a positive outlook. 2. Listen to or read the Tafsir of Surah Al-Qadr to know about this amazing night, to switch that mode ON and to keep it remained ON for all the nights. It could fall on any of the last 10 nights. 3. Choose the most comfortable place for worship in your home or Masjid. Avoid leaning on pillows & cushions while reciting Qur’an or Adhkaar so as to keep your back straight. 4. Switch off your mobile phones, iPads and Laptops if possible. 5. If you’re alone, recite the Qur’an in a loud beautiful voice so that your ears & heart remain involved with the recitation and you don’t feel drowsy. Plus it has an amazingly calming effect trust me! If you’re not alone then you can recite in a normal volume not to disturb others but can listen to a Qiraa-at in high volume using your earphone. 6. Elongate your Sujood and make loads and loads of Du’aas in it. Cry hard and ask ALLAH everything you wish for in Dunya and Aakhirah. 7. Raise your Du’aa – Remember it’s the night of decree and angels are precisely writing down whatever is gonna happen in your life for the next coming year, be specific in your Du’aas and ask for each and everything you need – Hajj, Job, Career, Spouse, Children, Home, whatever. Don’t play small in your Du’aas as you’re asking the KING OF ALL KINGS! 8. Pray 2 Raka’ah Salatul Tawbah every single night and ask for forgiveness from ALLAH – Al-Ghaffar, Al-Ghafoor, Al-Tawwab and Al-’Afuww. Repent sincerely with full hope and firm resolve of not repeating those sins again. 9. Memorize and keep asking the Du’aa of Lailatul Qadr: Allaahumma innaka ‘afuwwun tuhibb al-‘afwa fa’affu ‘anni (O Allaah, You are forgiving and You love forgiveness, so forgive me). 10. Ask ALLAH to grant you Lailatul Qadr and accept from you whatever ‘ibaadaat you did by His tawfeeq. - If you have found these tips useful, apply them and share with others too. |
