Two iconic Andy Warhol paintings of Elvis Presley and Marlon Brando sold for more than $151 million at auction in New York

Extremely rare portraits by Andy Warhol of Hollywood superstars Elvis Presley and Marlon Brando were among the highlights at a record-breaking auction of postwar and contemporary art.
Warhol’s “Triple Elvis (Ferus Type)” sold for $81.9 million and “Four Marlons” brought in $69.6 million on Wednesday 12th November, 2014 at Christie’s New York, which meant the evening sale realised $852.9 million, the highest total for any auction.
Works by Willem de Kooning and Cy Twombly also broke auction records for the artists.
“Triple Elvis” and “Four Marlons” rate among Warhol’s most famous portraits. The nearly 7-foot-high portraits were acquired by German casino company WestSpiel in the 1970s for one of its casinos.
The Elvis, executed in ink and silver paint in 1963, depicts the rock ‘n’ roll heartthrob as a cowboy, armed and shooting from the hip. The Brando silkscreen, created three years later, shows the actor on a motorcycle in a black leather jacket, an image that is repeated four times.ﾠ
Warhol produced a series of 22 images of Elvis. His “Double Elvis (Ferus Type)” sold for $37 million at Sotheby’s in 2012.
Last fall, his “Silver Car Crash (Double Disaster)” set an auction record for his work when it sold at Sotheby’s for $105.4 million.
There’s only one other four-times Brando, in the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Copenhagen. A “Double Marlon” sold at Christie’s for $32.5 million in 2008.
De Kooning’s “Clamdigger,” a life-size sculpture created in 1972, sold for $29.2 million, a world auction record for a sculpture by the artist. The bronze sculpture never left the artist, and it stood in the entry of his studio on eastern Long Island for about four decades.
The inspiration for it came from the clam diggers the abstract expressionist artist observed on the beach every day.
“Clamdiggers” was offered for sale by the daughters of Lisa de Kooning, who inherited the sculpture from her father when he died in 1997. She died in 2012.
The auction record for any work by de Kooning is $32.1 million for “Untitled VIII,” set last year at Christie’s.
Twombly’s “Untitled,” one of the famous series of “Blackboard” paintings he made between 1966 and 1971, brought in $69.6 million, a world auction record for his work. With their spiraling lines on a dark gray background, the paintings were so-named because they resembled the slate of classroom blackboard.
An oversized sculpture of a monkey by the popular artist Jeff Koons was another auction highlight.
Koons’ whimsical stainless steel “Balloon Monkey (Orange)” fetched $25.9 million. Measuring nearly 12 feet (3.6 meters) high and 20 feet (6 meters) long, it looks like an inflated twisted balloon.
Koons became the most expensive living artist in 2013 when his “Balloon Dog (Orange)” was auctioned for $58.4 million.

This particular auction was solely for upcoming artistes per se. I wouldn't say they are under priced.

Most of the works had been submitted to signature gallery. I think a year ago. The next auction will be in May. He just might be lucky.

A director in shell specifically asked me for Olamide Oresegun's contact. I believe the CNN feature is really doing him well.

What's your favorite of the works and how much will you pay for it?

The March Edition of the SOGAL ART AUCTION organized by signature gallery was indeed a note worthy event. We saw a good number of art collectors come together to show their support for art in Nigeria. This edition featured solely up and coming talents including Olumide Oresegun (Who was recently featured on CNN).

Art collectors complained about the present Nigerian economy, sighting it as the reason why this edition wasn’t really graced with very competitive bids. Without further ado, we will just go ahead to itemize the top bids.

We won’t be calling the names of the bidders, we will only tell their paddle numbers.

Overall it was an interesting experience and a very thought out occassion by the organizers. The next edition will hold sometimes in May.

Observations: The holder of paddle number 41 really did bid competitively for most of the works.

Olamide Oresegun’s work – Nigerian’s own upcoming artists featured on CNN only managed to bearishly be hammered off 250,000 as lot no: 73 to paddle number 7 – another competitive bidder.

hmmmm, I have really never thought about it like that before though.

I believe that Nigeria is in a very good position. The electorates are wiser now. Our leaders will definitely begin to sit up.

This is the first time in the history of our democracy that the incumbent president is not 100% sure of winning the elections. Thats interesting. very interesting!

In my considered opinion,1.Has the military denied being in possession of Buhari's certificates? 2.why is the military mute over the allegation 3. Can Buhari lie against the military with impunity? 4. Could this be one of PDP's usual desperate and despicable political manoeuvres? 5. Is it possible for Buhari to have risen to the rank of General (acclaimed one of the best, by an independent international entity of no mean repute), without having an O'level certificate? 6. Is it not blatantly CHEAP to dwell on ordinary certificates when we know that paper qualification is DEFINITELY not enough to make a good leader? 7. Does gej's Phd make him a leader to reckon with? 8. Could Sambo have ACTUALY lost his certificates to fire?, when? Where? How? Mind you, in the case of FIRE one cannot make enquiries or maybe you should enter fire and ask it some questions! Nobody can LIE against the Nigerian military with impunity. The fact that they have not responded to the claim or delayed to respond to such a weighty claim should send the biggest slowpoke THINKING. For goodness sake, are some people so unfortunately daft? Chai!
