Dangote is a businessman and will sell at the competitive price. He has to recoup his investment and make money for his investors. You can’t be importing PMS and be saying that you are competing with Dangote.

Nigeria will be foolish to allow people import when there is a local capacity to produce same. That’s government 101.

The premise of your argument is flawed. Dangote is a private business, not a charity, and Nigeria is not a communist country where prices are fixed for private enterprises. While it’s beneficial that raw materials are located near the refinery, this doesn’t automatically translate to below-market pricing. For instance, over 60% of the iron ore used in China is imported from Australia, yet steel prices are lower in China than in Australia. The situation is more complex than it appears.

NNPC still subsidizes PMS, which is why they are currently the sole off-taker. Dangote, on the other hand, will sell their PMS at a higher price outside Nigeria.

I believe the free market price is still more expensive than what PMS is been sold in Nigeria. I agree that Nigeria don’t have business with subsidy but removing it will be severe and will increase as our currency continue to devaluate.

Dangote is a private company, they refine petroleum products and sell at market prices. It doesn’t matter where the product is refined, the real cost of PMS is not N980, it’s more than N1200. If you want know how much PMS cost, check the prices from the countries around us. They don’t have subsidy, so they sell at an average price equivalent to N2000.

Dangote has 4 cement plants operating at full capacity in Nigeria and 10 other plants operating in the rest of Africa, including in Cameroon, Congo, Ethiopia, Ghana, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tanzania and Zambia. All these were built in the last 2 decade. Why will anyone think that his oil refinery that was built with $20 billion won’t work? That’s just wishful thinking.

I have more faith in Dangote than in any other Nigerian institution, including journalists. He has repeatedly proven himself. He promised to make Nigeria self-sufficient in cement, and he delivered. He even expanded by building cement plants in other African countries, including Cameroon, Congo, Ethiopia, Ghana, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tanzania, and Zambia.

Dangote also vowed to build a refinery in Nigeria, and he has now established the largest oil refinery in Africa, located in Nigeria. This refinery will end decades of oil importation, which has been exporting high-paying jobs and taxes out of Nigeria. I am confident the refinery will succeed 100%. There is nothing anyone can do about it; they are merely fighting a lost battle.

My point is that we need to give Dangote some slack. GEJ gave a lot of companies license to build oil refinery in Nigeria. Most of them did not or intend to build any, they just want to continue to import.

And on the point that he is not innocent, no business man with the type of investment that Dangote has will not lobby government for favourable operating conditions. This is justified and needed in Nigeria’s peculiar situation.

Mr. Dangote recently accused major players and regulatory agencies of sabotaging the $19 billion refinery’s efforts to secure necessary feedstock for its operations. In response, Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Authority (NMDPRA) CEO Farouk Ahmed stated that Dangote’s fuel has higher sulphur content, a harmful element in crude oil. According to him, the Lagos-headquartered refinery and other modular refineries produced diesel with sulphur content ranging from 650 ppm (parts per million) to 1200 ppm.
