Family / At What Age Should A Child Start Formal Education? by asala1: 9:20pm On Jul 12, 2016
Why do Nigerians like to abuse their kids by introducing them early to formal education? I saw a thread on the front page of a man complaining about how his 4 years old son doesn't respond properly at school. I was surprised and disturbed when he said that his teacher in school perceive the kid may repeat because has nothing to show he has learnt and also that a 4 year old kid has a private teacher! The most troubling part is that, most people on the thread do not find any of these disturbing. Only God knows what this kid is going through, there are thousands of kids out there suffering the same fate. Why deprive a 4 year old kid his childhood by expecting him to deliver?

Research has shown that there is no correlation between a child's early start of formal education and their academic achievement. However, early starters are more likely to have less attitude towards learning and are also likely to develop mental heath problem. http://www.cam.ac.uk/research/discussion/school-starting-age-the-evidence. In most developed countries, the average age they expose their kids to formal education is between the ages of 6-7 years.

Let not all turn our kids to robots or machines but it is important to allow our children develop their mental capacity and improve their creativity which they achieve by playing and learning without needless pressure.

...pls sir home tutor for kids is highy important...even if na 1hr everyday...no child was born dullard, average or intelligent..-t determines on how u take dem serious during deir early days of life.dey will play cos all work n no play makes jack a dull boy..!t home tutor is highly important

Home tutor for a 4 years old is an abuse. There is no child that should pass through that. Don't turn your kids to robot, let them develop their creativity, let them enjoy their childhood. Stop putting pressure on your kids, they are not responsible for your failure.

I'm not abusing him, pls. The idea of having a home teacher was tinkered with due to reports I got. I wanted him to catch up.

Catch up with what? He is just 4 years for God sake. He has his whole life to live under pressure, please allow him enjoy his childhood. He may be shy, encourage him to play with other kids, show him how to socialize.

School is the issue. He has home teacher and we teach him at home, too He will just not talk in school making the school say he might repeat class.

A 4 years old kid repeating class? A 4 years old kid has a home teacher? Whaat? Why are you abusing your kid?

His dad managed his accounts......not him. I mean, it's not he's famous because he has 10 Ph.Ds

What are you talking about? Messi makes the money, not his father. The names on the account is LM. Why do people pay financial organisation to manage their accounts and taxes, it's for efficiency. If they don't do it well, you can only fire them but the government goes after you.

I pay a company every year to do my taxes, i pay because filing taxes can be complex sometimes and may not get it right myself. If they don't do it well, the government revenue agency goes after me not the company.

Are you the one that will put him in jail? Whether he appeals or not, he's not going to jail.
Besides he was 18 when this incident happened....he didn't go to school. So where do you think he got MBA from?

People need to take responsibility. Tax evasion is a fancy name for stealing. Once someone is jailed even for one day, he becomes a criminal.

Break what law sir? Since when did hawking become a crime in Nigeria if not yesterday?

Third world meaning that hawking is prevalent in every third world country. Hawking and poverty is synonymous. There is no hawking where is no poverty. If not for decades of corruption, Nigeria would have gone beyond this stage. What do you want those masses to resort. They lack the finances to rent shops for trading.

Hawking, same as stealing, murder, armed robbery is against the law in Lagos state. It doesn't matter how long my brother, it is against the law!
If Lagos state outlaws hawking, why not move to Ogun, Ibadan, PH, Enugu or Kano to continue the business. Like I said earlier, many of these people don't have business living in Lagos, they will be better of living in a smaller city or in a village farming.

Are you sure you know the meaning of 'third world'?

wishy30:

He's not going to serve the jail term according to Spanish laws. He's yet to commit a crime worthy of sending him to jail before. He'll only pay fine in respect to the jail term. Read the news in details or let's wait to seee Messi in jail next season.

Even if he is sentenced to one day in prison, he is a criminal. It doesn't matter if he serves it or not.

Are you attributing the traffic jams which are obviously caused by narrow, insufficient and delapitated roads to be caused by street hawking?

Are you even okay? Nigga Nigeria is a third world country. A vast majority of its citizens are poor and the recent economic woes has just further plunged millions into abject poverty.

The reason you don't see hawking in the U.S is because it is a rich country and because an average american is rich as opposed to an average Nigerian. Hawking will naturally phase out when we play our cards right. You cannot just come up with such laws especially in this era of recession. Too many people are broke and our government does absolutely nothing for its citizens.

Do you expect those hawkers to resort to crime?

What are you saying? If you have to break the law to survive in a place, then you don't belong there. There is no justification for that! Who is comparing U.S to Nigeria?

BTW, what has third world has to do with the economy and poverty level of Nigeria? Nigga!

I don't get your point. Do you mean people should be allowed to sell on the road. Lagos has population of about 20million people, a large fraction of that are poor. If everyone is allowed to sell things on the road, you won't be able to get to work. Compare the chaotic Oshodi to the present relatively organized Oshodi with free flowing traffic and better security. There are a lot of people hustling in Lagos who I believe have no business living there.

You Yorubas are very funny, so you think the refinary Dangote is building its going to run with Lagos oil... Smh, Refinary dangote has already started building a very long time before oil was discovered in Lagos.
.
.
If they should discover oil in all the local gov't in Lagos state and Ondo state combined, it will not even near a finger tip of the least producing oil state in the s/s(south south). Its like 5/5,000 in comparision.

Indian presently have the biggest oil refinery in the world and they have little oil reserve. Nigeria will not dash Dangote refinery crude oil, he has to buy it at the world market price. He can always buy anywhere else in the world. Angola, Ghana, etc all have crude oil.
