Business / Hyundai Donates Mobile Clinics To Nigeria by ASANIGBO20(m): 5:59am On Sep 16, 2011
Hyundai Motor Company (HMC), world’s fourth largest automobile manufacturer, has donated two units of hi-tech ultra modern mobile clinics to two of Nigeria’s foremost health institutions, the Abuja National Hospital and University of Abuja Teaching Hospital.

Receiving the donations on behalf of these institutions, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, Honourable Minister of Health, said in his goodwill message that the vehicles are coming at an auspicious moment when the country needed to enhance its national disaster management system.

He described the mobile clinics as ‘Purpose built vehicles’ that should be used strictly for the purpose they are meant, warning that government would not hesitate to frown at any flagrant exploitation of the mobile clinics.

Also in his remarks, Ambassador Olugbenga Ashiru, Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, who was represented by Prince Debo Adeniyi in the ministry, applauded the magnanimity of Hyundai Motor Company and Korea Foundation for International Healthcare, saying that the Federal Republic of South Korea and Nigeria had enjoyed steady and purposeful relationship over the years.

Similarly, Mr. Linus Awute, permanent secretary, Ministry of Health applauded the donation of the modern Hyundai Mobile Clinics, which he said are fundamental to the improvement of healthcare delivery and the empowerment of health officers currently numbering 2000 since the inauguration of National Emergency Service two years ago.

Represented by Dr. Folake Majekodunmi, director special project in the ministry, Mr. Awute said the collaboration between Nigeria and Republic of South Korea would aside from strengthening the relations of both countries also add value the quality of healthcare. His Excellency, Mr. Park Young-Kuk, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea while relieving his speech at the occasion described Nigeria as one of her most important African partners in trade, energy and development cooperation.
He said Korea also collaborates with Nigeria through KOICA, (Korea Development Agency) in health related matters, education and good governance – an initiative he said was in line with MDGs (millennium Development Goals).

Meanwhile, Mr. Deugyong Cha, Deputy General Manager, Africa regional headquarters, Hyundai Motor Company said the mobile clinics are part of 10 mobile clinics the automaker earlier said it would donate to African nations this year in line with Hyundai ‘Moving the World Together’ Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative.

The vehicles which are custom built with mobile internal medicine clinic and the latest medical devices, such as digital ultrasonic and portable ECG (electrocardiogram), can conduct basic medical tests, such as malaria screening and provide medical supplies.

Also equipped with a mobile digital X-ray clinic, the vehicle can travel on rough road conditions without sacrificing efficiency and accurate healthcare diagnosis, Mr. Cha explained.

Meanwhile, Mr. Kiran S. Parab, Sales & Marketing Director, Hyundai Motors Nigeria, brand custodian of Hyundai has expressed the Stallion Group’s obsession for Hyundai – a brand he said is synonymous with quality, fuel economy, excellent performance and more value for money.

Politics / Reps Get New Leader, Committee Chairmen by ASANIGBO20(m): 5:58am On Sep 16, 2011
The suspense over the composition of the standing committees of the House of Representatives was broken yesterday by the Speaker, Aminu Tambuwal with a call for maturity and closing of ranks as he unveiled names of committee chairmen and their deputies.
Tambuwal also announced a new Leader for the House, Hon Mulikat Adeola-Akande, to end weeks of speculation over the position.

Six new committees were created to push the number of committees from 84 to 90, while some former chairmen retained their positions A-List committees. The new committees are Committee on Federal Road Maintenance Agency [FERMA], Federal Road Safety Commission [FRSC], Lake Chad, ICT, Local Content and Reform Government Institutions.

Before reading out the names of chairmen of the committees, Tambuwal reminded the House that the constitution of standing committees represented the main vehicle to actualise the constitution brief of any Parliament. According to him, it had become imperative to constitute the House Standing committees since it had been established that legislative work could not be conducted fully in plenary sessions.

In constituting the committees, he stated that the leadership put into consideration the roles played by bipartisanship in its emergence, hence the need for members to close ranks so that regressive conventionality would have little or no place in the House at this particular time of the nation’s history.
“As we begin on this new journey, I must state that all Committees are equal in the essence of their constitution and being.

“The core objective is service. It will therefore be clearly unhelpful for lawmakers to see some as superior to others or that one is more ‘juicy’ than another.“At this particular moment in our history, a solid closing of ranks would be far more preferable than a contentious in-house crisis over perceptions of inferiority or superiority of parliamentary committee chairmanship or membership.” The speaker said that what the leadership and the Selection committee did was to rely on the nomination made by each state and marry it with areas of core competences of members in deploying such talents effectively.

He challenged the chairmen of the committees to show maturity and courage in closing of ranks to achieve the legislative agenda. Among old members who retained the chairmanship positions are Hon Farouk Lawan, Education, Patrick Ikhariale, Power, Beni Lar, Human Rights, Ifeanyi Ugwanyi, Maritime, Nicholas Mutu, NDDC, Abiodun Akinlade, Science and Technology, Kadijat Buka Ibrahim, Privatisation, Esuiche Ubani, Climate Change, Yakubu Dogara, House Services.

For the first time in the history of the House in the present dispensation, the chairmanship of Appropriation committee went to a region other than that of the speaker, it went to John Enoh from the South-south.
Hon Ndudi Elumelu was returned as chairman of Health committee, while the chairman of Finance Committee went to Abdumumuni Jibrin from Kano State. Former spokesman of the House, Hon Eseme Eyiboh was returned as chairman of Civil Society and Donor Agencies, while Jerry Manwe returned as chairman of Electoral Matters.

Ogbuefi Ozomgbachi, formerly of Banking and Currency is now chairman Works, Aminu Shagari, Judiciary, Nnenna Ukeje, formerly of Donor Agencies, but now Foreign Affairs, Umar Bature moved from Foreign Affairs to committee on Interior. Muraina Ajibola, a top contender for the position of the speaker when it was zoned to the South-west by the ruling PDP was compensated with the chairman of Petroleum Upstream, while Warman Ogoriba is to man the committee on Niger Delta Ministry.

Among members of opposition parties named as committee chairmen included Opeyemi Bamidele of Legislative Budget and Research, Mansur Owolabi, Anti Corruption, Rasaq Adewusi, State and Local Governments.

Addressing the media later, House new spokesman, Zakari Mohammed said that the speaker had done the best for the House, but that adjustment should not be ruled out later.

Politics / Obasanjo Meets Boko Haram Leader’s Family by ASANIGBO20(m): 5:54am On Sep 16, 2011
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo yesterday waded into the Boko Haram crisis, pleading with the family of its leader, Yusuf Mohammed, who was killed by security agents in 2009, to forgive and forget the past.

Obasanjo who arrived Maiduguri, Borno State yesterday morning met the Boko Haram leader’s relations at the family house in Bayan Quarters.

He said the visit was a personal initiative. The former president also visited the home of Baba Fugu Mohammed, Yusuf’s father in-law, who was also killed after reporting to the police during the Islamist sect’s crisis in 2009.

Obasanjo was met by the late Fugu Mohammed eldest son, Baba Kura Fugu. Sources at the meeting quoted Fugu as saying that it was the first time a high profile personality would be meeting with the family after the 2009 extra judicial killings.

Chief Obasanjo asked to be given an opportunity to mediate in the crisis, adding that if granted, he would ensure they were treated fairly and justly by the government.

He appealed to the families to forget the past and allow peace to reign again in Borno State and the nation.
The former president was received on arrival in Maiduguri by the Borno Deputy Governor, Zanna Mustapha.

Politics / I’ve Never Seen $13.5m In My Life - Patience Jonathan by ASANIGBO20(m): 5:48am On Sep 16, 2011
I’ve Never Seen $13.5m In My Life, Says Patience Jonathan

First lady, Mrs. Patience Jonathan, has denied the report that he was investigated for being in possession of $13.5 million in 2006 saying she had never seen such amount in her life.

Mrs. Jonathan who was reacting to a report by online whistle blower that the said amount was confiscated from her said $13.5 million was way too much for her to carry. She spoke to members of the Nigerian Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) at the Presidential Villa.

“How can they say Mrs. Jonathan is caught with that kind of money? Can a human being carry that kind of money in a bag? That money is too much o. Even if I escaped the security in Nigeria, I could not have escaped the security people in the country they said I was carrying that kind of big money to,” the first lady said.

She said the story was planted to discredit her husband’s first 100 days in office as elected president and was aimed at blackmailing her family because there was no iota of truth in the report.

Mrs. Jonathan said she had never stolen throughout her time as wife of an elected public officer: “I was wife of deputy governor; I never stole. I was wife of governor; I never stole. I was wife of the vice-president; I never stole; and now I’m the wife of the president; I have not stolen.”
The first lady who was visibly emotional about the allegation said she had been disturbed by the baseless rumour and accused those who were bent on rubbishing her husband’s administration of orchestrating the story.

“Since my life I have never, never, never been invited by the EFCC. If ever I was invited, I won’t shy away; I will go there and report myself. But I have never been invited by EFCC.
“I have discovered that anytime my husband is contesting for an election, people will want to pull him down. Especially those people who don’t want Nigeria to move forward. They will always come out with false story because they want to sell their story, they go ahead and publish their falsehood without making efforts to get facts.

“Incidentally, Nuhu Ribadu was chairman of the EFCC when they said I stole that kind of big amount of money and he was also a presidential aspirant in the past elections. When this matter came to him, he made it clear to whoever wanted to listen that he never invited Mrs. Jonathan to the EFCC over any kind of crime but Nigerians have refused to hear and believe him.

“Today, Mrs. Farida is there as the chairman of the EFCC. If my file was with the commission, she would have seen it to do a follow up on that. But she has not done so because there is nothing criminal about me in the commission neither is there anything against my husband.

“Where is the customs officer that arrested me? The money is too big for one person to carry. When I was wife of deputy governor, there was no allocation to my office. I was wife of the governor, there was no allocation, I was wife to the vice president, there was no allocation to my office and now I am the wife of the president and still there is no allocation to my office.

“I work with my NGO and I organise launchings to raise money. I plead with good Samaritans to donate to my NGO and they do that with all their heart because they are happy with what I am doing with the money they give me which I am using to better the lives of the poor in the society.”

Politics / How I Helped In Boko Haram Bombings, Ezimako, Mastermind, Tells Court by ASANIGBO20(m): 2:53pm On Sep 14, 2011
One of the alleged masterminds and prime suspects of the bombing in Suleja, Niger State, Ahmed Hassan Ezimako, yesterday told the court how Boko Haram attacked the All Christian Fellowship Mission and Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office and other areas between April and May 2011.

Ezimako, who is a Boko Haram convert from Imo State, was among eight suspects arraigned in an Abuja Chief Magistrates Court yesterday by the State Security Service (SSS) on a two-count charge of criminal conspiracy to commit felony.
Others arraigned with him were Shuaibu Abubakar, Umar BabaGana Umar, Mohammed Ali, Musa Adam, Mohammed, Umar Ibrahim and Salisu Ahmed.

They were said to have criminally conspired to commit “a felony to wit: criminal intimidation and threat to life and, voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous means contrary to Section 97, 248, Sub Section 1 and 397 of the Penal Code punishable under the same section.”

However, prosecuting counsel, Mr. Cliff Osagie, told the court that one Basha, who is the architect of the crime, along with others was still at large.

Although Ezimako did not enter his plea to the charges against him, he confessed participating in the Boko Haram bombings, revealing that he connected the members to where they bought the cortex wires that were used in detonating their bombs.
Ezimako, who said point blank that he knew something about the transactions on the explosives, said: “I was working in a mining site at Awe Local Government Area in Nasarawa State.” He said at the close of work on a certain day, he met Ahmed, who he had known for a long time since they started the Boko Haram.

“He collected my phone number on a condition that he would not give it to anybody,” disclosing that he had to run away and change his former phone numbers after Ahmed gave it to Basha, who invited him to Suleja, preached to, and converted him to Boko Haram. He said Basha told him that they were on a revenge mission for their slain leader, Mohammed Yusuf.

“We have been together since 2008 and 2009 in the preaching of Boko Haram. After the crisis of 2009 in Maiduguri, Basha called me with Salisu, to meet him in Madala for a meeting. As I went there, Basha collected my number and preached to me that he was training people for a revenge for the death of Mohammed Yusuf. He taught us how to handle AK 47.”
Revealing that he, Basha and Ahmed went into oath taking after the meeting, Ezimako said he became discontent with the practices of the dreaded sect and told Basha that he was no longer interested in the sect. Hence, he destroyed his initial phone number to prevent Basha from reaching him.

However, he said Basha was able to again reach him on his new phone numbers, which he allegedly got forcefully from Ahmed, after he (Ezimako) gave it out to Ahmed conditionally.
He told the court that this was how Basha was able to contact him to help the sect get two rolls of cortex wire that would enable them explode their bombs.

He said he was able to connect Ahmed with one of the accused persons that helped them to get it and got his money from Basha through the same Ahmed.
Having listened to him, the prosecution told the court that investigation on the matter had been concluded and the service was ready for the trial of the accused.

Accordingly, he prayed that the accused persons be remanded in the SSS’ custody, while applying an adjournment to enable the service produce other suspects for trial.
Chief Magistrate Oyebola Oyewunmi ordered that the accused persons be remanded in SSS’ custody, even as she urged them to hire a lawyer of their choice.
Further hearing was fixed for October 4.
