Politics › We Never Invited Crowd That Attended Abba Kyari's Funeral- Presidency by Ashabbiiee(op): 7:49pm On Apr 18, 2020 |
By Temidayo Akinsuyi The Presidency on Saturday said there was nothing it could do to bar the crowd who thronged the Gudu Cemetery, Abuja to pay their last respects to the late Chief of Staff to the President, Mallam Abba Kyari. Speaking exclusively to Daily Independent, Mallam Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the President on Media and Publicity said they never invited the public to the funeral and couldn’t have invited soldiers to flog those who have come to pay their last respect to deceased. He added that in their bid to ensure crowd control and social distancing, the burial was delayed and they had to proceed as more people kept trooping to the cemetery. Was there any invitation for the public to come for the burial? Go back to my Twitter handle and read what I posted. From 10am, when we picked up the body at the airport, we said a message out that the funeral will be private and that the public should please go and pray for Abba Kyari”. “We also said no condolence visits to the President and family. What can we do? Are we going to invite soldiers to flog people who came to pay their last respect to the man?” “We didn’t invite people. We were trying to move people back and observe social distancing and it was delaying the funeral. We just have to do it because people are not ready to leave. What are we going to do?” he asked. Shehu, in a series of tweets on Saturday, shortly after the remains of Kyari arrived at the Defence House in Abuja for his burial had said “We just received the body of Abba Kyari, the deceased Chief of Staff the President in Abuja”. “In strict observation of the protocol put in place for the burial of Coronavirus victims by the NCDC, and the Federal Ministry of Health, the funeral prayer and burial will be private. “Thereafter, there will be no such ceremonies as condolence visits. “Well-meaning friends, family members and the general public are encouraged to pray for the repose of Abba Kyari’s soul,”. https://www.independent.ng/we-never-invited-crowd-that-thronged-s-funeral-presidency/

Politics › Afenifere Still Bitter Against Buhari Over Atiku, PDP's Loss ~ Ekujumi by Ashabbiiee(op): 8:48am On Apr 15, 2020 |
A civil rights activist, Nelson Ekujumi, on Tuesday described pan- Yoruba socio political organisation, Afenifere, as a mini-opposition party which has refused to see any good in the All Progressives Congress (APC) –led Muhammadu Buhari administration. Shortly after the 14 days extension of the lockdown in Lagos, Ogun and FCT by the President, Afenifere, in a statement by Yinka Odumakin, its National Publicity Secretary, had described as unacceptable the decision by the federal government to give palliatives to 3.8m households out of 80 million poor Nigerians. But speaking in a chat with INDEPENDENT, Ekujumi who is the Chairman of Committee for the Protection of Peoples Mandate (CPPM) said Afenifere is still bitter over the electoral loss suffered by Atiku Abubakar and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2019 general elections. “What has this government done that the group Afenifere commended it for? Absolutely nothing! Afenifere is more or less a mini-opposition party in sync with its mother party and candidate who lost the last Presidential election, so one can understand their bitterness and anger with everything ever since that electoral defeat”. He also challenged Afenifere to come out with its own blueprint on how better to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic rather than attacking the policies of the government. “Please, let the political party called Afenifere either on its own or with its parent political party, give us their own alternative rather than attacking every policy of this government that was overwhelmingly elected by the Nigerian people at the polls in 2019” he said. https://www.independent.ng/afenifere-still-bitter-over-atiku-pdps-loss-in-2019-presidential-election-ekujumi/

Politics › Junaid Mohammed: Buhari's Promise To Lead Boko Haram War Is Now Haunting Him by Ashabbiiee(op): 8:00am On Apr 09, 2020 |
Junaid Mohammed, elder statesman and Second Republic member of the House of Representatives on Wednesday said President Muhammadu Buhari shouldn’t have promised Nigerians to lead the war against Boko Haram from the front.
He said the statement made by the President is now coming back to haunt him.
While delivering a speech at Chatham House International Affairs Institute in London in February 2015, Buhari had promised to lead from the front in the fight against Boko Haram if elected President.
“Let me assure you that if I am elected president, the world will have no cause to worry about Nigeria as it has had to recently; that Nigeria will return to its stabilising role in West Africa; and that no inch of Nigerian territory will ever be in the hands of the enemy. I, Muhammadu Buhari, will always lead from the front and return Nigeria to its leadership role in regional and international efforts to combat terrorism”.
Following the success recorded by the Chadian Army last weekend, many Nigerians have challenged President Buhari to match his words with actions by emulating President Idriss Deby who led the offensive against the insurgents.
Junaid however said given President Buhari’s age, no sincere Nigerian will expect him to physically present at the war front. “First and foremost, the circumstances of President Buhari and Idriss Deby of Chad are totally different. Also, the Nigeria is in a democratic government while the situation in Chad is more like a military dictatorship”.
“But if truth be told, whatever the circumstances, I think President Buhari shouldn’t have made the pronouncement that as elected President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, he was going to lead from the front. Whether he was speaking literally or metaphorically, it doesn’t matter”.
“He shouldn’t have made the statement but he made it and now it is now coming back to haunt him. But no sane person who believes in Nigeria’s democracy as a project will imagine that Buhari who is over 85 years old should now go and lead Nigeria’s troops in fighting Boko Haram. Given his age, we shouldn’t expect him to be physically involved in frontal attack against Nigeria’s enemy whether they are Boko Haram or foreign countries. That will amount to taking things too far”.
“I believe that what Buhari is expected to do is to provide political, economic and other kinds of leadership qualities and make sure that the people who are behind Boko Haram are exposed and they are dealt with appropriately. I don’t think that has happened”, he said. https://www.independent.ng/buharis-promise-to-lead-war-against-boko-haram-now-haunting-him-junaid-mohammed/
