The Nigerian Air Force, NAF, in Lagos on Wednesday said it had acquired new platforms and was currently reactivating old aircraft to better combat contemporary security challenges in the country. The Chief of Air Staff, CAS, Sadiq Abubakar, disclosed this at the inauguration of newly built Air Force Secondary School and Airmen Transit Accommodation at 401 Communications Depot, Shasha, Lagos State. Mr. Abubakar said the in-country reactivation of NAF’s aircraft was one of the gains in building personnel capacity, adding that six Alpha Jet engines earlier reactivated were already being flown. He added that “recently, we reactivated six engines of Alpha Jets that would have been taken outside the country. “Those six engines have been mounted on the aircraft and now flying. “We inducted MI-35 helicopter and helicopter gunships in Makurdi recently through the help of federal government. “We are tying as much as possible to attend to the welfare of officers and men as they are putting in their best and we are seeing the benefits in their inputs.” The chief of air staff said some NAF personnel were being trained abroad and would come back home to save the country of resources that would have been spent abroad. “This has contributed immensely toward equipping the service to conduct counter insurgency operations and also contend with other emerging security challenges across the country. “Be assured that we will continue to do our best in meeting our statutory responsibilities of defending the territorial integrity of the nation,” On the inaugurated school and accommodation, Mr. Abubakar said education was key in human capital development and a key factor in technical advancement and innovation. He said “we made a quick assessment of the available primary and secondary schools in our bases and identified some gaps. “These gaps necessitated the upgrade of some of the schools, building and additional ones to meet the educational requirements of our personnel’s dependants and the host communities. “NAF School Shasha has 18 classrooms, five laboratories, a library and recreational facilities, as well as offices for the commandant and other members of staff,” he said. Mr. Abubakar said airmen would stay in the transit accommodation for some months with a view to ensuring improved mentorship and post-recruitment training for enhanced performance. “Each block consists of 30 fully furnished self-contained rooms. Similar blocks are being provided in major Nigerian NAF bases across the country,” he said. Earlier, the Air Officer Commanding (AOC), Ibrahim Yahaya, said the accommodation was built to meet the growing accommodation needs of personnel. “Two other projects are also currently ongoing in this base — a block of 18 flats of two-bedrooms for Senior Non-Commissioned Officers (SNCO) and new Corporals and below mess. “The CAS on April 19, last year, promised to construct the classrooms and was reminded of the urgent need for a secondary school to address the difficulty experienced by personnel’s children. “In line with his policy of efficient service delivery, the CAS promptly gave authorisation for the establishment of a secondary school in Shasha. “Like many other units and bases across the country, the NAF base Shasha has benefitted immensely from different projects, including the construction of a drainage system.” source :http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/more-news/234132-nigerian-air-force-acquires-helicopter-gunships-other-aircraft.html

A civil society organisation, South East Advocacy Group (SEAG), has urged the Senate not to confirm the appointment of Mr. Funsho Doherty as the Director-General of the National Pension Commission (PENCOM). The group in a statement described the appointment as a violation of the provisions of the Pension Reform Act (PRA) 2014. SEAG said the contraventions of Section 20 and Section 21 (a)-(j) of the Act in the removal of the former Director-General (DG) of PENCOM, Mrs. Chinelo Anohu-Amazu, and flagrant breach of Section 21 (2) of the Act for a second consecutive time in the appointment of her successor was an affront on rule of law. It said the actions had further confirmed a deliberate discriminatory policy against the South-east by the federal government, noting that such actions were responsible for the resurgence of Biafra agitation in the zone. The statement signed by a legal practitioner and the Deputy National Coordinator of SEAG, Mr. Francis Nwodo, said: “Section 21 (2) of the Pension Act, 2014 clearly provides that ‘In the event of a vacancy, the President shall appoint a replacement from the geo-political zone of the immediate past member that vacated office to complete the remaining tenure’. “But the presidency first appointed Alhaji Aliyu Dikko from Kaduna State in the North-west as replacement for the removed DG, who hails from the South-east. This resulted in outcry among pension industry stakeholders and the South-east since that appointment was in breach of Section 21(2) of the Pension Act and Section 19 (5) (a). “We feel more disappointed that whereas Nigerians expected the acting president to uphold the rule to protect the pension industry as a Professor of Law, what he did after his sweet sermon at the colloquium to mark the 50th anniversary of the end of Biafra war on the need to build a country that does not ‘discriminate or marginalise in any way’ was to appoint his brother from the South-west, Funsho Doherty, as the DG of PenCom in clear and continued contravention of the law and exclusion of South-east.” The group wondered why it was so difficult for the government to appoint a qualified person from the South-east to complete the tenure of Mrs. Anohu-Amazu. “If this is Osinbajo’s way of building a nation that ‘does not discriminate or marginalise in any way’and sustaining the gains made by the disbanded PenCom leadership, which raised pension assets from N2.9 trillion to N6.5 trillion and won the African Pension Award for three consecutive years, then there is little hope for the Igbos, the pension industry and our progress as a nation,” SEAG emphasised. https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2017/06/02/south-east-group-rejects-doherty-as-pencom-dg/ |

The Joint Admissions Matriculation Board (JAMB) says more than 10,000 candidates caught for examination malpractices in the ongoing UTME in Anambra have been handed over to appropriate authority. Lynda Nwachukwu, the Coordinator of the board in Anambra, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Awka on Saturday. NAN reports that the all computer-based testing (CBT) mode 2017 UTME, which started on May 13 in 642 centres nationwide, ended on May 20. Ms. Nwachukwu said the examination, which took place in 28 centres in the state, was successful. “There was no disruption of the exercise in any of the examination centres,’’ she said. The coordinator said the candidates adhered strictly to the requirements of the examination, adding that JAMB provided all the materials required for the examination. NAN correspondent, who monitored the last batch of the examination, reports that some parents complained of system failure in some CBT centres in the state. Eucharia Okonkwo, a parent, said her daughter, who wrote the examination at the St Mary’s High School Ifite-Dunu centre, could not complete the examination due to the faulty computer and network failure at the centre. According to her daughter, many candidates could not complete the questions in record time because of the faulty system. Ms. Okonkwo advised JAMB to plan well for examination in subsequent years to avoid the technical hitches that could give the candidates psychological trauma. Mose Mojekeh, Head, Department of Marketing at the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, told NAN on telephone that such system failure in UTME was not acceptable. According to him, the hiccups could potentially deny young people from Anambra State university admission. Mr. Mojekeh advised JAMB to urgently collate the number of candidates affected and set another examination for them. He also decried the practice whereby JAMB sends officials from one state to supervise examinations in another state. “Experience has shown that such officials do not care much about the candidates when problems arise, as they leave them to their fate,’’ the lecturer said. He called on the management of schools, whose candidates experienced the computer failure, to take their complaints to the State Ministry of Education to present their cases. JAMB concluded the 2017 CBT UTME on May 20. (NAN) http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/231720-jamb-more-than-10000-candidates-caught-cheating-in-anambra.html |

I was born in Lagos state and have spent most of my life in the southwest but I am actually Hausa. I Have never been to the south-east or south-south part of Nigeria despite having many friends from the region. I had been to practically every region apart from the SE AND SS. As the saying goes, experience is the best teacher and nothing prepares you for the unknown as much as the NYSC does. I remember the day i got my Call up letter like it was yesterday. We had all gathered in front of the faculty officers office awaiting our turns to get called in for our Posting letters. Many people came out of the office rejoicing and this gave me a little bit of hope but boy was i wrong. I knew i wasn't going to get what i expected when i noticed the countenance of the officer as he handed the letter to me.As I stared down at my call up letter with the bold words written on it 'A State in the South east', I couldn't help but let the flow of mixed feelings come through. At first i was dazed, then slowly the reality of my situation began to creep in. I could feel my heart shredding into several pieces with every beat. This was probably due to the negative stories (kidnapping, fraud and etc) and pictures I had heard and seen in the media. While others were rejoicing about their states of deployment, I simply walked to a corner to let hot tears that had welled up in my eyes fall freely. At that moment, Google became my best friend and the Nigerian Map became my Companion. Who knew the southern Province occupied about 1/3 times the size of Nigeria? Before then, i didn’t….lol!. Since desperate times requires desperate measures, lots of things went through my mind with the first being how to change my state of deployment but since i wasn't married, Heavily pregnant or sick & living with a serious health condition, my hopes of changing my state of deployment flew out the window, my fate had been sealed. I Had my camp in Enugu and was posted to Calabar. On getting to Enugu state, I found the place to be Dirty and rowdy. The camp was even worse than most of the NYSC camps I had visited in other states (mine included). My roommates were fun and lively. Fortunately for me, 3 of us were from the same department in school, so we kinda had an upper hand in bonding with the others. After finally completing the registration process at my PPA, I was so uncomfortable and angry. The lodge I was provided was tiny and stuffy, and at night the mosquitoes came en masse on their power bikes. My first night was dreadful, I couldn’t sleep. Throughout the night, I made a mental note on getting a new apartment the next day. The next day I asked around for where I could get an apartment around my PPA. I finally got one and I spent two days buying stuffs and tidying the place up. In summary, It was a horrible expireInce, everyone there was abrasive and were not polite. They always tried to deceive people. I will never wish that experience on anyone. |
