HYPERTENTION: THE SILENT KILLER Mama Niko, my childhood neighbour collapsed while going to her store. We all thought its a product of her many enemies, since she was a known trouble maker earning her the alias Trouble. Niko her son became an orphan and a drop-out as there was nobody to support him. Mama Niko was said to be healthy that morning before her death which begs the question, what could have gone wrong. The only plausible explanation was that she must have died from complications of a chronic medical condition with hypertension being the prime suspect. Complicated hypertension kills silently and suddenly. Hypertension simply means persistent abnormal elevated blood pressure. Blood pressure readings are comprised of two values: one for systolic blood pressure and the other one for diastolic blood pressure; anything equal to or above 140 over 90 is considered high. It affects approximately 1 billion people worldwide and it is commoner among blacks. Studies shows that about 30 million Nigerians are hypertensive, affecting 1 in 3 men and 1 in 4 women. Unfortunately over 30% of hypertensives are unaware. These sets of people are time bomb waiting to explode just like Mama Niko. Kaboom! And they are gone 6 feet under the ground. Over 90% of hypertension is idiopathic, the causes are unknown. However, there are some things that increase ones chance of having hypertension which include advance age, black race, stress, sedentary lifestyles, alcohol consumption, smoking, consumption of fatty food and extra large people with BMI greater than 30. High blood pressure is usually asymptomatic, but when it presents with symptoms, the symptoms are usually vague. Vague symptoms of hypertension include headache, insomnia, blurry vision and palpitations. Untreated or poorly treated hypertension leads to heart failure, heart attack, stroke, blindness, renal failure and many more. Routine blood pressure check is important (especially for individuals with increased chances) and this can be done in the hospital. One must know his number and it is easier these days that even mushroom chemists now render blood pressure checking service at a cheap price. A way of showing love to your old ones is to make sure they get their blood pressure checked. You might be saving a life. To those who have been diagnosed of hypertension, yet you are not on drug and not attending clinic, I feel sorry for the loved ones youll be living behind. Stroke might just be knocking on the door. Please retrace your steps. Eat healthy, avoid excessive salt intake, reduce fat intake, quit smoking and limit alcohol consumption and proper management of stress. Extra large ones should emulate the popular comedienne Lepacious Bose. Hit the gym with the aim of maintaining a healthy weight. We must all know our numbers, Do not ignore your health, Visit your doctor today If you dont look after yourself, you may fall a victim to the silent killer |

COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS AND FACTS ABOUT MENTAL ILLNESS BY UGBALI AUGUSTINE I have no right by anything I do or say to demean a human being in his own eyes. What matters is not what I think of him; it is what he thinks of himself. To undermine a mans self respect is a sin. - Antoine de Saint-Exupery Misconception simply means a belief, a wrong idea about something or an event. Mental illness is an illness of the mind. People with a mental illness may behave in strange ways or have strange thoughts in their view or the view of others. People with a mental illness sometimes have problems dealing with other people, or living what is called “a normal life”. Treatment and certain medications can help people with certain mental illnesses live a better life. People with mental illness are decent people. They deserve respect like anyone else. Yet sigma, caused by a lack of understanding and knowledge, rears its ugly head and chips away at the persons sense of self, making them feel isolated and ashamed. MYTH#1: "People who need psychiatric care should be locked away in institutions." FACT: Today, most people can live productive lives within their communities thanks to a variety of supports, programs, and/or medications. MYTH#2: "A person who has had a mental illness can never be normal." FACT: People with mental illnesses can, and do, recover to resume normal activities. FACTS YOU NEED TO NOW ABOUT HEPATITIS Hepatitis refers to an inflammatory condition of the liver and the liver cells!!! Your liver produces bile to help you digest food and it also removes toxins from your body. Hepatitis causes inflammation and scarring in the liver, making it hard for the liver to do its job. It is majorly caused by viral infection. Other possible causes include secondary result of medications, drugs, toxins, and heavy alcohol consumption, and an abnormal immune response to a normal body part also known to be autoimmune diseases. There are five main types of viral hepatitis, they are: Hepatitis A (HAV) Hepatitis B (HBV) Hepatitis C (HCV) Hepatitis D (HDV) Hepatitis E (HEV) >The first three are the most common ones. Hepatitis B and C are the most common causes of liver cirrhosis and cancer. >Hepatitis A: is spread mainly through food or drinking water that has been contaminated by an infected person. >Hepatitis B: is transmitted through contact with the blood or other body fluids of an infected person. It can also be passed on from mother to child during childbirth. >Hepatitis C: is mainly spread through blood to blood contact. In rare cases it can be transmitted during childbirth >People may have no symptoms of hepatitis while some other people may develop visible symptoms like skin discolouration, poor appetite, pain around the abdomen, vomiting, diarrhoea. >Some of the signs and symptoms include (but not limited to) tiredness, dark urine, pale and watery stool, unexpected weight loss, yellow skin, yellow eyes, and typical signs of jaundice. >Drug use can lead to hepatitis. For you that is keen with self-medication all the time. You better watch it now!! >Hepatitis, especially C is ten times more infectious than HIV/AIDS. Hepatitis C can also be sexually transmitted but the likelihood of contacting the virus is through sharing needles, blood transfusions and other equipment used in injecting drugs. Even unsterilized tattoo needles can lead to a viral hepatitis infection! Take note!! >80% of people infected with Hepatitis C do not even know that they have it. This is shocking but true! >Dirty environments, poor sanitation like dirty bathroom, drinking contaminated water, eating food that is not properly cooked, and under-cooked meat of pigs can expose you to a high level ad risk of contracting hepatitis A and E. >Hepatitis B is usually transferred for mother to child, hence the major reason why a lot of pregnant women are tested for it. If you are pregnant and have not been tested. Quickly rush to your doctor. >Chronic hepatitis can lead to liver failure and when that begins to happen, your brain can relapse and that can lead to a condition close to dementia. Also, there may be issues with blood clotting since faulty liver leads to fewer protein which helps to clot bloood PREVENTION In general, the careful handling of needles and the screening of blood before transfusion are useful ways to prevent hepatitis. Hepatitis A may be prevented by vaccination and the use of immunoglobin in people who are in close contact with patient of HAV infection. Hepatitis B has a very potent and effective vaccine, which gives a lifelong protection and requires only intermittent booster doses. Hepatitis B immunoglobulin may also protect or attenuate the severity of illness, if given within seven days of exposure to the HBV. SAFE PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES AGAINST HEPATITIS Avoid multiple sex partners, Avoid unprotected sex for unmarried people Don't share sharps Stop patronizing the pedicure service hawkers Have your own clipper or only patronize barbers That observe the correct instrument treatment measures For health workers. EARLY MARRIAGE A MENACE IN OUR SOCIETY BY UGBALI AUGUSTINE Throughout the world, marriage is regarded as a moment of joy and celebration but the practice of early marriage gives no such cause for celebration. Early marriage refers to the marriage of the children aged below 18 years. Early marriage is often a forced marriage as it takes place without the consent of both the bride and bridegroom (Child marriage and Forced marriage). Although early marriages affect both the sexes but girls have been a major victim. Its practice has inflicted harmful effects on the parties involved and also the overall society. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE CAUSES OF EARLY MARRIAGES Poverty and Economic Transaction Lack of education Developing an alliance between two families Lack of awareness of adverse health consequences Value of virginity and protection of young girls Cultural and Religious Norms The notion of honour and morality is an important factor for the early marriages. It is often considered a shame for the family if the daughter is not a virgin before the marriage. So in order to ensure that the virtue of the girl remains intact, girls are often married earlier, to ensure virginity. EFFECTS OF EARLY MARRIGE Early marriage has been one of the main reasons for child labour, unemployment, low literacy rate and poor health standards. There are thousands of cases where girls have to give up their studies for their households that leave them with little ability to earn their own living. Similarly married boys have to give up their education in order to earn for their families In case of early marriage, the risks of early pregnancy and childbirth are well documented: increased risk of dying, increased risk of premature labour, complications during delivery, low birth-weight, and a higher chance that the newborn will not survive. It can also lead to Vesico Vaginal Fistula (VVF) Early marriages also have great psychological effects on the life of the girls:Inadequate socialization, discontinuation of education, great physiological and emotional damage due to repeated pregnancies devastates these girls. It is a huge responsibility for the girl to become wife and mother and because young girls are often not prepared for these roles, this heavy burden leaves a serious impact on their psychological welfare, their perceptions of themselves and also their relationship Finally, these harmful effects caused by the practice of early marriages calls for attention of the policy makers, the government and relevant agency to come up with the laws discouraging early marriages. Early marriages should be regarded as a violation of the Human Rights and the parties involved in this crime should be charged heavily. Furthermore, the government in each country should make efforts to eliminate poverty and provide education to its population which will result in the decrease in the child marriages. |

It is estimated that only 10 to 15 mg kill a grown man, and their bite provides about 100-120 mg of venom on average, the largest ever recorded was 400 mg of poisoning. British wildlife enthusiast Nathan Layton was in Hoedspruit, a small town near Kruger National Park, bitten by a black mamba and girl died after being bitten. The mortality rate depends on several factors such as the health, size, age and mental health of the victim, the penetration of one or both of the amount injected fangs snake venom, poison pharmacokinetics, the bite position and proximity to major blood vessels.
