The new Minister of Communications Technology, Mr. Adebayo Shittu, on Wednesday pledged to make Information and Communication Technology (ICT) the next cash cow of the country. Addressing directors and staff on assumption of duty as minister of the ministry in Abuja, Shittu said it is no longer news that the country's economy is in dire strait because of the falling prices of crude oil. According to him, petroleum which used to be the cash cow for the nation is not doing well as it is a global crisis. He said: "Well, we can tap on agriculture to recover lost ground in terms of revenue generation and finances, but this takes time. "But God has helped us in this country with our large population that use telecommunications and IT in their daily lives. "That means that telecommunication will serve as the new cash cow for the country and I'm going to pursue this and I want all of you to in the ministry to join me in evolving policies that will make us have the best that we can in terms of income generation from telecommunication technology." http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/minister-pledges-to-make-ict-nigerias-cash-cow/225347/ |
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reacted to
the much-expected assignment of portfolios to
President Muhammadu Buhari’s ministers.
The opposition party has tasked the Buhari’s
ministers to quickly settle down, move fast and
concentrate on the economy.
The PDP, in a statement issued by its publicity
secretary Olisa Metuh, said that the incumbent APC-
led government has so far played heavily on
“dramatizing” routine procedures and processes,
which was even glaring in the postponed swearing-
in ceremony of the ministers.
The party added that with the swearing-in, the APC
government should fully resolve the matters on the
actual position of Nigeria’s economy and the
direction in this.
The statement reads in part: “Whereas President
Muhammadu Buhari had announced that the nation is
bankrupt to the extent he cannot pay his ministers,
his new Minister of Information had contradicted him
directly by stating how the government is buoyant
and ready to deploy $2.5 billion infrastructure fund,
saved N1.4 trillion with another N2.5 trillion ready as
special intervention fund, which goes to say that the
country is not actually broke.
“These new ministers should note the challenge
before them regarding the image of the country
which the APC government has changed from being
the ‘Heart of Africa’ and a country of ‘Good people,
Great nation’ to that of ‘Corrupt people, Broke
nation’.
“Furthermore, we counsel the ministers, especially
those who will be the face of the government, to note
that the campaigns are over. Nigerians therefore will
no longer condone propaganda, lies and deceit but
expect a responsible dissemination based on truth,
honesty and openness.”
Buhari’s cabinet is smaller than that of former
president Goodluck Jonathan, who had 42 ministers.
However Jonathan named is ministers weeks after he
took office while incumbent leader delayed the
selection of cabinet for five months.

Goodluck Jonathan, former president of Nigeria, has been mandated to mediate in the political dispute that broke out in the Zanzibar region of Tanzania after the country’s general election. Kamalesh Sharma, secretary-general of Commonwealth, asked Jonathan, who led a 33-nation observer mission to the country in October, to lead a delegation that will hold talks with the key political figures in the region. Crisis erupted in Zanzibar after Jecha Salim Jecha, chairman of the Zanzibar Electoral Commission (ZEC), annulled the presidential election of October 25 against the wish of the people. Jecha cited irregularities and announced that a re-run would hold at an unannounced date. “I, Jecha Salim Jecha, exercising the powers bestowed in me, declare all election results null and void… a fresh election will be conducted on a date to be announced later,” he had said. However, the situation tore apart, Zanzibar’s ruling Chama cha Mapinduzi party and Civic United Front (CUF), the main opposition party in the region. International observer missions and key development partners of the election condemned Jecha’s action, saying both the voting and counting processes were held in an atmosphere of peace. But in a letter personally signed by Sharma, the secretary-general appealed to Jonathan to help restore peace to troubled parts of the East African nation. “As you are aware, the Zanzibar electoral situation remains unsolved, although recent reports indicating willingness by the main political parties to engage in talking is encouraging,” the letter read. “In view of the Commonwealth’s historical role as the moral generator of the Muafaka Accords, it is important that we remain engaged to continue to encourage all concerned to resolve the situation in a peaceful and sustainable manner. “I am therefore delighted and honoured that you have kindly agreed to be my special representative over the coming weeks, in order to remain in contact with key political leaders and to encourage them towards an expeditious resolution of the impasse.” Jonathan’s decision to concede the 2015 general election has earned him accolades across the world, especially in Africa. Tanzanians showered encomiums on him and the leading newspapers in the country paid tributes to Jonathan when he led the Commonwealth observer mission. In one of its editorials, The Daily News of Tanzania, lauded the immediate past president of Nigeria for taking his defeat in the last presidential election “in all magnanimity”, adding that “Jonathan may very well have averted bloodshed that is characteristic of incumbent leaders who cling in power tooth and nail, fang and claw! What lesson is there in this for us in Tanzania, pray?” In the editorial entitled: ‘Salutary lessons for Tanzania from Nigeria’s latest elections; the paper said further: “It is generally admitted that the election in Nigeria was unprecedentedly free, fair and transparent, whereby the opposition candidate won the presidency. “What is more remarkable is that the incumbent president who sought re-election, Goodluck Jonathan, … most graciously accepted the results promptly! “Oh, I don’t know beyond the fact that Tanzania could tragically do worse if it fails to dedicatedly take a leaf out of Nigeria’s newest book on elections!” Similarly, the Guardian of Tanzania described him as “a democrat who has pointed the way forward for the rest of Africa”. In its own editorial comment entitled ‘High profile figures among observers will add credibility to poll process, results’, The Guardian stated: “Jonathan’s voluntary handover of power to the opposition wrote a new chapter for Nigeria’s democracy, given the fact that it is rare for sitting presidents in Africa to hand over powers to winning opposition parties.” https://www.thecable.ng/jonathan-mediate-tanzanian-political-crisis

Buhari spoke with the Golden Eaglets and their officials, urging them to strive for victory tomorrow in the final of the Under- 17 FIFA World Cup holding in Chile. It would be recalled that Nigeria first won the same tournament in China in 1985, when President Buhari was military head of state, and he urged the team to repeat the same feat tomorrow against Mali , to make it the fifth time Nigeria will win the trophy . The Governorship Election Petition Tribunal for
Taraba on Saturday nullified the election of
Taraba Governor, Mr Darius Ishaku, of the
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The Tribunal, sitting in Abuja, declared the
candidate of the All Progressives Congress
(APC) and a Minister designate, Mrs Aisha
Alhassan, as the winner of the April 11
governorship election in the state.
In a judgment the three-member tribunal held
that Ishaku was not validly nominated as
candidate of the PDP and therefore was not
qualified, ab-initio, to contest the governorship
election.
Specifically, the tribunal held that the
governorship primaries purportedly conducted
by the PDP in the state was done in violation of
section 78 (b) (1)(2) of the Electoral Act which
guides parties nomination to the position of
governorship candidate.
It held that contrary to the provision of the
section, PDP conducted the purported primaries
at its national secretariat, Wadata Plaza, in
Abuja with no clear delegation from the local
government areas in the state.
The tribunal sustained the testimonies of INEC
head of election monitoring that the commission
was not aware of any primaries conducted by
the party in line with the provision of the
electoral act which produced Ishaku as the
party’s flagbearer. Section 78 (b) (1)(2) of the Electoral Act states:
In the case of nomination to the position of
Governorship candidate, a political party shall
where they intend to sponsor candidates:
(i) hold special congress in each of the Local
Government Areas of the States with delegates
voting for each of the aspirants at the congress
to be held in designated centres on specified
dates.
(ii) the aspirant with the highest number of vote
at the end of the voting shall be declared the
winner of the primaries of the party and
aspirant’s name shall be forwarded to the
commission as the candidate of the party, for
the particular state.
The tribunal held that the defence by the PDP
that the primaries were shifted to Abuja because
of security challenges in the state was rejected
by the tribunal.
It sustained the evidence of the INEC official
that there was no primaries election in the state
and the emergence of Ishaku through the
purported election in Abuja was after the
statutory stipulated time for party primaries had
elapsed.
It held that since Ishaku was not duly sponsored
by the PDP, the party had no candidate in the
governorship election in the eyes of the law.
The tribunal therefore voided the votes of the
PDP and Ishaku in the election saying “it is a
waste’’ and declared the APC and its candidate,
which came second, as the valid winner of the
April 11 election.
Reacting to the judgment, counsel to APC,
Abiodun Owonikoko, SAN, said the judgment
was a landmark being the first time the election
of a governor will be nullified on the doctrine of
wasted vote.
He said with the judgment, the era of impunity
in party primaries was gone and it would be a
lesson not only for PDP but all political parties.
On whether Ishaku will vacate the seat
immediately, Owonikoko said the judgment “is
not the end of the road, there is opportunity for
all the parties to explore whatever the grievance
they have’’.
Owonikoko added that if the governor or the
party did not appeal within 21 days, Alhassan
will be sworn-in as governor.
NAN reports that counsel to the PDP were not
available to comment on the verdict of the
Tribunal as they all rushed out of the venue after
the judgment. (NAN)

Good luck to Eaglets. |
President Muhmmadu Buhari had a chat with the Golden Eaglets, Nigeria’s U-17 male national football team, who are playing Mali in the final of the ongoing 2015 U-17 FIFA World Cup in Chile. President Buhari calls the Golden Eaglets on Saturday, November 7. Photo: SaharaReporters The presidency says the talk lasted for 25 minutes. In his goodwill message, the president addressed to all the 21 players and the head coach Emmanuel Amuneke, the team’s doctor, physiotherapist, media officer, members of the technical team and other officials. “Your victory on Sunday would remind Nigerians of what happened in China 30 years ago (in 1985, when Buhari was the military head of state, Nigeria won its maiden U-17 FIFA title), and it would raise the morale of Nigerians, especially the youths. We’re praying for you. We are anxiously waiting to receive the cup. Please put us on the world map of soccer again.” In their return, Amuneke and Kelechi Nwakali, the captain of the team, thanked the president for his support, promised not to let him and Nigeria down. Nigeria defeated Mexico 4 – 2 on their way to the final, while Mali were stronger than their Belgian counterparts, 3 – 1. Both of the African teams were under fire for being ‘age cheats’. The Senate has moved a motion to probe the Goodluck Jonathan-led administration on allegations surrounding the alarming rate of unemployment in the country as against the government initiatives to quell the crisis. Citing mismanagement of funds, the Senate, yesterday, asked President Muhammadu Buhari to begin immediate probe of his predecessor, Dr Goodluck Jonathan, in his handling of the Subsidy Re-investment and Empowerment Programme, SURE-P, according to the Vanguard. The red chamber said it was imperative that President Buhari ask his predecessor to account for every penny spent during the latter‘s administration on the SURE-P and other poverty alleviation programmes. This came just as it ruled against the implementation of the N5,000 monthly stipend to unemployed Nigerian youths as the President promised during his campaign. The advice to probe Jonathan was sequel to an additional prayer moved by Senator Babajide Christopher Omoworare to Senator Bassey Albert Akpan-sponsored motion, entitled: “Urgent need to curb the soaring rate of unemployment in Nigeria,” which he presented for consideration during yesterday’s plenary. “I want to move that the immediate past government be made to account for every penny spent on SURE-P and other poverty alleviation programmes, and I so move, Mr. President,” Omoworare said. When Saraki put the question to voice vote, the ayes response came from the APC senators, but the PDP senators kept mute to the nay call. In the motion, Akpan observed that the latest figures of Nigeria’s soaring unemployment situation by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBC) has increased to 8.2 percent in the second quarter of 2015 from 7.5 percent in the first quarter of 2015 and 6.4 percent in the last quarter of 2014. http://www.tori.ng/news/12692/senate-mandates-buhari-to-probe-jonathan-on-financ.html

People are joining the moving Train. |
Nkechi Nwaogu, the senator represented Abia Central senatorial district in the 7th House of Assembly has officially defected from the former ruling Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress. The senator who first joined the Senate in 2003 condemned the economic policies of the immediate past President Goodluck Jonathan-led administration, saying that they were shrouded in secrecy. Nwaogu had visited the APC national headquarters in Abuja today, November 5, where she said she came to express her appreciation to the national leadership of the party for its support and concern during her late husband’s funeral, Leadership reports. She said: “l am here to fraternise myself once again with my party, APC, to identify myself, to associate myself with the change train and anybody today in this country who does not realise that this is a divine mandate given to APC to usher in change to sustain change, to bring about change in all endeavours of our lives especially in our economic lives is not realistic. “We all know what has been happening or what has happened in the economy of our dear nation that it was shrouded in secrecy. Thanks to the emergence of President Muhammadu Buhari and the change doctrine, change mantra and change advocates. The Abia senator said that those who have sworn not to conceive anything of the truth would not see the much talked about change explaining that even the holy book says that it is only the truth that can set us free. “For us to attempt to bring to a level of acceptance for the president to remove the present level of unemployment, to remove or try to see how we can increase our revenue, to see that we have no other country other than Nigeria, therefore everybody has a contribution to make towards revamping this nation. “This nation is blessed with natural resources. It beholds on us to put our brains and our contributions together as citizens of this nation to ensure that when we train our children out from tertiary institutions, that they do not come out to roam in the street. They say an idea man is a devil’s workshop. “I am pledging to the family of APC that I am now part of APC that is to say that wherever l would be called upon l will serve and l also use this medium to solicit everybody who has agreed to join this party to ensure that you have something positive to contribute towards nation building.” The senator spoke in company of two of the APC Board of Trustees members, Chief Sam Nkire and Chief Chris Akomas, a former deputy governor of Abia state. Commending the APC and President Buhari for the new mantra of change, she also added that those who are joining or have joined APC are people of positive minds. https://www.naij.com/628962-pdp-senator-formally-joins-apc.html

These are not the best days for former governor of
Edo state, Chief Lucky Igbinedion, as the incumbent,
Adams Oshiomhole, has ordered a probe of alleged
removal of $13 million from the coffers of the
government during his reign.
The case of Chief Igbinedion, who had been
prosecuted in the past by the Economic and
Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for cases of
fraud was decided after the State Executive Council
(SEC) meeting held in Benin, the state capital on
Wednesday, PM News reports.
Mr Louis Odion, the state’s commissioner for
information, who spoke with journalists after the
meeting, said: “there is the issue of a fraud that was
discovered while turning our books. We found that
the sum of $31 million was fraudulently taken from
state coffers under the administration of Chief Lucky
Ogbinedion. The Comrade Governor has directed the
Attorney-General to commence legal action in that
direction.
“So in the coming days, the state government will
take legal action to ensure that what was stolen from
Edo State Government is recovered. When you
convert $31 million to naira, it fetches you a
whooping N7 billion. You can imagine what N7
billion will do in improving the human condition in
Edo State.”
Governor Adams Oshiomhole wants the immediate
probe of Chief Lucky Igbinedion
Speaking further, he said: “Comrade Oshiomhole has
asked me to convey his appreciation and gratitude to
the good people of Edo State as well as members of
the private sector for their voluntary compliance with
the Land Use Charge.
“He has asked me to single out Coca-Cola Bottling
Company for voluntary compliance. I think we need
to put this in context. Our challenge as a government
is mounting. Every day, our citizens want government
to intervene, they want schools to be built, they
want roads reconstructed but the truth is that our
revenue is dwindling and without deepening the tax
base, we won’t be able to deliver.
“So when we find corporate body and citizens who
voluntarily comply by paying their taxes, we view
them as partners in progress.
“We have also been directed to put on notice the
CEOs of some companies, notably Banks who have
refused to remit what is due to the government. I am
speaking specifically with regards to some banks
that have failed to remit withholding tax to the state
government.”
The state’s commissioner for commerce and industry,
Abdul Oroh, who also spoke on the purported fraud,
said: “The $31 million which was stolen from the
people of Edo State for the transaction which was
designed clearly for criminal purposes. This project
was called Avrant Cement Company situated at Ekpe,
near Ikpeshi in Akoko Edo Local Government. https://www.naij.com/627815-ex-governor-probed-alleged-n7-billion-theft.html

A staff of the Nasarawa State-owned radio station, Christopher Ajegina has been suspended for allegedly recording a scene of election malpractice during the re- run election for the Lafia/Obi federal constituency of the state. General manager of the station, Alhaji Yusuf Musa who claimed to be acting on the directive of Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, had earlier slammed a six-month suspension without salary on Ajegina with effect from April 29, 2015, but attempt by the embattle staff to resume duties after the expiration of the suspension period was resisted by management of the station. The suspension letter which was signed by the acting director, Administration and Supplies of the station, Rajab Okposhi, was obtained by Nigerian Pilot and read in part: “This is a gross indiscipline; it is a total violation of the public service rules and serious misconduct. “Consequent upon the above and in line with the public service rule that the management acted on the directive of His Excellency the governor of Nasarawa State and you are suspended for six months without pay or salary, pending the decision of the governor with effect from 29th April, 2015.” It was gathered that trouble started for Ajegina when the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in the state cancelled results in some polling units for the Lafia/Obi federal constituency in the April 2015 general elections and ordered for re-run, where candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Musa Dahiru, was declared winner against his opponent, Dr. Joseph Kigbu of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, amidst controversies. It was learnt that the management of NBS was not pleased with the suspended staff and accused him of presenting a video clip of massive rigging and other forms of malpractices during the election to candidate of the PDP whose recent victory at the tribunal the management believe was based on the strong evidence presented before the tribunal against the APC candidate. When contacted, Alhaji Musa said he was not ready to comment on the matter. “I have the right to suspend any staff that goes contrary to public service rules and I will not hesitate to completely dismiss him from service if the matter goes into the media. No journalist should call me on this matter again,” he warned our correspondent who contacted him on telephone. The National and State Assembly Election Petition sitting in Lafia, the state capital, had nullified the election of the APC candidate, Musa Dahiru, and ordered INEC to withdraw the certificate of return and issue same to candidate of the PDP, Joseph Kigbu, declaring the re- run conducted in the said election as illegal, null and void. http://nigerianpilot.com/nasarawa-radio-suspends-staff-for-recording-re-run-election-fraud/ |

IbnSultaan:October 28, 2015 (KHARTOUM) - Sudanese president Omer Hassan al-Bashir on Wednesday has arrived in India to participate in third India-Africa summit in a new challenge to the International Criminal Court (ICC). Bashir was indicted by the ICC in 2009 and over alleged genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity during the Darfur conflict. As a result his overseas travel has been restricted to friendly nations ever since. He was welcomed by Indian foreign Vijay Kumar Singh as he arrives the Indira Gandhi International airport in New Delhi, India. The India Africa Forum Summit gathers over 40 African leaders who come to explore ways to develop relations and attract India investment and technology. Launched in 2008, India also hopes that the forum can contribute to build strategic partnership aimed at revamping cooperation between India and African countries, where its rival China already has a major head start. In statements to Reuters on Tuesday; the ICC prosecutor Fatou Bensouda called on the Indian government to cooperate with the war crimes tribunal and arrest Bashir. Bensouda said that India, which is not an ICC signatory, has to cooperate because the U.N. Security Council resolution had lifted Bashir’s immunity under international law. “By arresting and surrendering ICC suspects, India can contribute to the important goal of ending impunity for the world’s worst crimes,” she added. Bashir received an official invitation from the Indian government to attend the meeting. Last June, Bashir was forced to flee South Africa where he attended an African Union (AU) summit after a court ruled he should be banned from leaving pending the outcome of a hearing on his possible arrest. The Sudanese president is expected to hold talks with the Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, on the sidelines of the summit to discuss the future of the bilateral relations between the two countries. India is the second largest exporter to Sudan after China. Several Indian oil, gas and construction firms operate in Sudan. Total bilateral trade between India and Sudan surged to $1.4 billion in 2014-15, from $327 million in 2005-06. http://www.sudantribune.com/spip.php?article56875

Wailers do the needful. |
President of Sudan Omar al-Bashir who has been declared a war criminal by the ICC for alleged genocide and war crimes during the Darfur war was smuggled from India to Sudan aboard the Nigerian Presidential Jet. It will be recalled that Omar al-Bashir attended the India-Africa Summit held in New Delhi India. India is not party to the Rome Statute that created the ICC, which is an independent international court, and New Delhi is not expected to oblige it by arresting Omar al-Bashir. After the summit, Omar al-Bashir was left with the dilemma of returning to Sudan and like a good brother, President Muhammadu Buhari offered to take him to Sudan aboard the Nigerian Presidential Jet. As reported by Vanguard , President Muhammadu Buhari made a “technical stop-over” in Sudan on October 31 on his way from New Delhi. Our source reliably informed us that the “technical stop-over” was to drop the Fugitive President Omar al-Bashir in Sudan. Nigeria deposited its instrument of ratification to the Rome Statute on 27 September 2001. The ICC therefore has jurisdiction over Rome Statute crimes committed on the territory of Nigeria or by its nationals from 1 July 2002 onwards. As it stands, Nigeria is party to the Rome Statute that created the ICC. The question now is : Why will President Muhammadu Buhari smuggle an International fugitive aboard the Nigerian presidential Jet knowing fully well that his actions contravenes the International Statutes that Nigeria is signatory to. http://www.thebreakingtimes.com/breaking-news-how-buhari-smuggled-fugitive-omar-al-bashir-out-of-india-to-sudan/

allegedly misstating two sets of statements STANDARD Bank on Friday broke its silence on regulatory troubles in Nigeria, saying that subsidiary Stanbic IBTC had attracted 1-billion naira ($5m) in fines for allegedly misstating two sets of statements. Last week, the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRCN) suspended the ability of four people associated with Stanbic — including chairman Atedo Peterside and CEO Sola David-Borha — to sign off financial statements, after uncovering a raft of irregularities in the 2013-14 statements. The regulator also directed the bank to withdraw and restate these statements. Standard Bank has now disclosed another sanction not included in the regulator’s statement. "Stanbic IBTC was confidentially notified of the purported fine in a separate letter from the FRCN (last) week, which confidentiality was no longer maintained when reference to the fine appeared in a press article in Nigeria (on Friday) morning," said Simon Ridley, Standard Bank’s chief financial officer. Standard supports Stanbic’s statement that it was on the right side of financial reporting standards, with transactions between Stanbic and Standard Bank subsidiaries being the only material issue disputed. Other than that, "the quantum of the naira amounts themselves were not under question", said Mr Ridley. "It was where and how they were disclosed in the notes to the … statements. There is no suggestion these amounts should be restated." Sanlam Investments equities head Patrice Rassou said: "The fine is very small when you compare it to MTN, where the amount is 1,000 times bigger." http://www.bdlive.co.za/business/financial/2015/11/02/stanbic-ibtc-gets-5m-fine
