ACDI Postdoctoral Research Fellowship: Forecasting Climate Change Risks to Wild Food Plants

A research team from the African Climate and Development Initiative (ACDI) at the University of Cape Town is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Fellow (PDRF) to join a project forecasting climate change risks to wild food plants and the nutritional consequences for the communities that depend on them.

Value and tenure:
The value of the fellowship is ZAR 330,000 per year, with extension for a second year dependent on performance and funding

Conditions of award:

Applicants may not previously have held a full-time permanent academic post.

Paradigm Initiative (PIN), a social enterprise advocating for digital rights in Africa, requires a technical proposal and cost quotation from qualified individuals or agencies to create novel games for incorporation in its digital security toolkit

The primary objective of these games (puzzles, augmented reality games, quizzes, etc) is to promote game-based learning approaches revolving around digital safety. The games shall be web-based owing to the online version of the toolkit, with integration for the offline publication, that will have a description with links pointing to the safe online repository where toolkit users can play the toolkit games. Work to be performed includes the conceptualisation and development of games, puzzles, quizzes and other gaming experiences around identified digital security themes.

United Nations FAO World Food Day Poster Contest 2020 for Teens Worldwide

Calling out to all children and teens around the world! If you’re between ages 5 to 19, we want you to use your imagination and create a poster of your favourite food hero at work. The world is full of food heroes – from farmers to drivers, shop assistants, food bank or government representatives etc., who despite various challenges, such as the current COVID-19 pandemic, work hard to make sure that food makes its way from farms to our table. Let’s celebrate their great efforts this World Food Day. Young minds can be inspired by our World Food Day Activity Book that talks about the important role food heroes play in the food system and how everyone can come together and take action to support our food heroes so they can provide the healthy diets we need, while protecting the planet.

Three winners in each age category will be selected by our jury and announced here in December. Winners will be promoted by FAO offices around the world and receive a surprise gift bag and Certificate of Recognition.

The Contest is open to children and youth between the ages of 5 and 19, living anywhere in the world.

The age to declare in the entry form is the one at the time of entering the Contest. Minors must have the permission of their parents or legal guardians to participate in the Contest.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE

Participation is free of charge.

The entry period will begin at 12:00 (CEST) on Wednesday 1 July 2020 and will close at 12:00 (CEST) on Friday, 6 November 2020.

The competition is divided into the following categories: 5 to 8, 9 to 12, 13 to 15, and 16 to 19.

Only one entry should be submitted per person. Multiple entries from one person will result in disqualification.

Poster entries may be drawn, painted or sketched using pens, pencils, crayons or charcoal, or using oil, acrylic or watercolour paint, as well as mixed media. Digitally created artwork is also permitted. No photographs are allowed.

Poster entries may or may not include text. If text is used, no more than 25 words or 100 characters can be accepted.

All artwork must be original and should not include photographic images of the Contestant or other personal information.
All participants are encouraged to read about the World Food Day theme in the World Food Day Activity Book Younger children may want to learn together with a parent or teacher.

Posters can only be submitted using the entry form provided .

All fields in the Contest entry form must be completed and after uploading the poster design, the ENTER button must be clicked. Younger children may need help from an adult in making their online submission.

Working on an A4 sheet or an 8 ½ inches by 11 inches sheet is recommended, to make it easier for you to scan and upload your poster design. If your poster is larger, you may have to take a digital photo of the work and upload the photo file.

Roger Casement fellowship has been established to honour the memory of the Irish human rights activist Roger Casement who spent some of his early working life in Calabar, Nigeria. Exceptional young people can now submit entries for the 2021 Commonwealth youth awards to win prestigious titles and cash grants.

The awards recognise and reward young people whose work has made a major impact on people and communities in their country.

Regional categories
Young leaders from across the 54 Commonwealth countries can enter five regional categories:



Africa;
Asia;
Caribbean;
Europe and Canada; and
Pacific.
A pan-Commonwealth panel will judge the entries based on the impact, sustainability and level of innovation.


Eligibility
To be eligible, you must:

be a Commonwealth citizen aged 15 to 29 years;
have been engaged in development work for at least 12 months as a professional or volunteer; and
show a strong track record of implementing impactful development work and contribute to one of the 17 sustainable development goals.
Entries must be received by 23:59 on 21 October 2020.

The awards were launched today at a Commonwealth Action Series webinar to mark International Youth Day.

Winners
Judges will choose 20 finalists who will each receive a trophy, a certificate and £1,000 in cash.

Of the 20, five regional winners will be chosen and awarded an additional £2,000.
The finalists and regional winners will be announced during Commonwealth week in March 2021.

There will be an overall winner who will receive the title of Commonwealth Young Person of the Year 2021, and a total cash prize of £5,000.

This year’s award includes special recognition for young people who have made outstanding efforts to tackle development challenges created by the COVID-19 pandemic.
