CHAPTER 2

They say, "Man proposes and God disposes". What I met on arrival at the ATM center looked like something that could be best explained away by this above quote, but I knew better. It was not God that disposed my plans. It wasn't Him. It couldn't have been Him. I knew who it was or what it was.

In case you are thinking that I would say it was the devil, well I won't. You just bursted F9 straight. Because i ain't saying that. I would lie if I do. It was not the devil anything.

It was this bank people and their gross incompetence and their 'temperamental' ATMs. And I will just tell you something about this very bank. Elephant. Yes. Elephant. Elephant bank. Since eighteen something. You get it? Last bank. Yes, that's an irony.

Personally, I have had my share of trials of faith regarding ATM centers but the ones have encountered with the elephants have been really epic. I don't have any personal dislike for this Elephant bank but I don't know why their ATMs always treat me bad. I can't recall ever offending them or regarding their ATMs as my enemies but they have made sure to put me in their enemies list.

As soon as I landed with my aboki bike man, I saw the longest queue that ever liveth. It must be the queue for the people trying to withdrawal everlasting life or something like immortality. It couldn't have been money. Such queue must be for something far more than money. But you already know. It was for money.

Out of all their so called six abi na seven ATMs, only one was 'slowly' and 'sickly' working. She or should I say he (which gender is appropriate for an ATM please? But for this matter, I go use she. No vex o all dem she- people) was acting like the youngest wife of a rich, polygamous husband who already had 'hard' and bossy older wives before the youngest came. You know that kind of family abi? Where all the older wives be forming seniority, and be asking questions like, 'who she even think say she be? She dey form sisi abi na iyawo? Abegi'

If your were there you would have easily agreed with me. Judging by their looks, you would notice that the so called working one was the newest looking one. So, na youngest wife status she get. All the madams (old looking ATMs) must have told her something like, 'we have been here long before you came and we have been working. In fact, for you to even come to meet this family (or bank, in this case) working, it was because we had been working. Oya, make your own contribution. Now na ya turn. We need rest. Make you continue dey work'

She must have grudgingly and fearfully yielded because she was just dragging out the money slowly and making lots of people hiss at her sluggishness.

I was just tired. With such queue, how would I get to pay this aboki bike man? Would I have to keep him waiting? Was he not out to hunt for money by picking up more passengers? Would he spend his whole day with me and was I ready to pay for his full day service?

I was wondering on what to do when I suddenly noticed a lady who had been waiting for a bike with me. I was at the waiting spot before her but when I waved a bike, I noticed that she was acting hasty, though in a very polite manner. I was expecting her to just misbehave. You know that kind of expectation and feeling. I was hungry and kinda angry, and I needed to make transfer on someone even if the person is not the cause. I just needed one with a slight mistake thrown in my direction and I would burst at him or her.

She seemed to sense my feeling and pleaded with me to help her take the bike. I was not prepared for that. I was not prepared to just be dashing someone an early morning help like that. But what would I have done? She was polite, and she pleaded in such a way that made me feel, it was up to me to decide if she would take the bike or not.

I felt good. You know that feeling- respect. Respect. And men have a thing with respect. Moreover, that girl make sense die. She was really beautiful. Even in my hungry condition and with the state of the affliction that my stomach was going through, I could not help but notice her beauty. She sparkled.

I let her have it- the bike. Not because she was beautiful o. Before you starting thinking off key now.

"Hey", I said as I tapped her

"Hi", she responded with a smile. That smile made me lost sense of my hunger for as long as it lasted. I just hung. Paused. Froze. She must have noticed that- my condition because of her smile, and I was sure she must have always known that she had such effect on men.

"Hey", she said and that woke me back.

Guy, you just messed up, I mentally told myself. Real mess up. How could you? How? How would you let yourself hang while staring at a lady?

"Good morning", I said. "I need your help", I added pointing to the bike man. "I will refund you the cash as soon as I make my withdrawal"

"No problem", she said and gave me fifty naira to pay the bike man.

It was now waiting time. Time to wait for my turn to withdraw my hard earned abi na hard pleaded for 5k. The line was moving slowly. I just had to console myself with a quote by Charlse Spurgeon, a famous Baptist preacher who said, "By perseverance, the snail reached the ark" (referring to Noah's ark before the flood).

This was snail not slow motion but I was edging close. The lady I told you about was in front of me. She found a way to squeeze me behind her. How she convinced the other guy was shocking. I was looking at the guy. I am sure he didn't hear anything she said. All he did was just nod and I squeezed in. Job well done.

When I was the sixth person to withdraw, something tough happened and that just weakened me further.

CHAPTER 1

This was one of those days I would wish I had a chance to rehearse on first before living it. There are days like that. Days I wished it was just a movie and not real.

For starts, I slept off the night before on an empty stomach. I was damn hungry. The hunger that was at work in my life would have knocked down five grown men down to the floor. Maybe two of the five would probably be praying that death would just come and claim them.

That would be an easy job for death especially in these days that people are busy praying against death with all zeal, knowledge or no knowledge. Praying death to come would make him feel needed and wanted and he might just rush in with something close to the speed of light, and with a grip that would make one say 'the sweaty and warm' hands of death instead of 'the cold' hands of death.

I woke up to a yawn, an angry yawn. I didn't plan to yawn. I had even yawned before I realized that I had just yawned. Why was I angry? I had slept on for several hours without any dream about food until when the morning came and then the management of dream planning and sending committee sent me a sweet dream. In fact, a delicious dream. With rich delicacies of food. I was ready to devour them without even thinking of praying, then I woke up.

I just got up so angry that I yawn with full force. And rose up with a folded face to go and do the usual morning clean up. Brushing nylon teeth. Cleaning up my room. Bathing. I did bother to look at my face in the mirror. There was nothing fine about my face that I would see. I knew I might even get more angry at seeing a reflection of my angry face at the mirror.

After getting ready, I zoomed out of the house. I needed to get to the nearest ATM to withdraw cash. I had gotten a credit alert of five thousand naira the previous night around 11:15PM. And because it was late, I couldn't make any withdrawals to at least buy food and eat. Moreover, the nearest ATM to my place was a about twenty minutes walk.

Apart from that, there have been recent fears due to recent trends of crimes about some really bad guys hanging around ATM pretending to come and make withdrawals only to brand some weapons like knives and daggers and even guns to dispossess customers of their money.

I was not ready for that. I knew how long it took for this five thousand to land in my account. I knew how much calls and text messages involved. Plus my many lie lie sympathetic tales to pull out the five thousand from my ever stingy and super-glue palmed uncle.

Let me better let the hunger have its way than the robbbers abi na thieves to. And to be candid, it was as if the spirit of hunger heard me and then dared to have its way all through.

I took off and thought it was best to take a bike since I already had the 5K breathing in my account. Moreover, I was already weakened by the severe floggings I had received from the hunger. The plan was to bike it and pay the bike guy after withdrawal but what I met at the ATM center scattered my plans.

THE DEAD MAN THAT STOLE

In a distant land at an unknown time, among a people whose laws and pattern of thinking are far in nature, meaning and interpretation from normal human laws, an incident occurred which made everyone got confused since it defied all solution.

This distant land was one of the greatest civilizations of its time. They had a great and wise king who was feared within and outside the kingdom because of his great strength and wisdom. He was a king given so much to the pursuit of knowledge. For him, books were his best companions and he would spend hours and hours and sometimes, days after days reading, studying and meditating.

He wanted to rule his people well and he did all he could to become a king that would be qualified to do so. He didn't take for granted his place and position as king, and never relented in making efforts to discharge his responsibilities to his people properly and honorably. For him been a king was not a thing of praise, where the praise comes in is in becoming a dutiful and effective king. The position was not it but rather the performance.

Because he wanted the best for his people, he believed that knowledge was key, that a man with knowledge has more advantage in life than the one without. That a knowledgeable cobbler was many times qualified to succeed than an ignorant one. And so, he set up centers of learning for his people to go and acquire knowledge and he made them so affordable that even the poorest of citizens could afford it.

But apart from his love for knowledge, he had something else that obsessed him- his quest for morality. He wanted his land to be known as a land of morals and high values. He wanted his people to be taught moral values, to acquire them and practice them.

But that was not all, he ensured that the council of elders were men of high moral values and enacters of moral laws to rule and properly administer the land. The land is as good as it's laws, he would always say.

And in the quest of establishing a highly moral kingdom, they put in some laws that were strange to say the least. Nobody noticed anything strange with such laws simply because no one had broken them. A law would seem uncontroversial until when broken and then a proper verdict would be required to be passed as judgment

One of those laws stated: "If any stolen item is FOUND in any person's possession, that person would be charged for stealing it and then judged"

It seemed easy, for them. The reason been that the people rarely steal. And secondly, who steals what he or she does not intend to use? As far as they could reason, if any man steals a thing, it must be because he had need for it. The thief steals for his selfish benefit whatever it is. Be it food to eat, clothes to wear or whatever. He does not steal to pass what he has stolen to another. That could not even be thought of as possible. And it would even be so impossible for one to steal so as to implicate another. These were their thoughts and it worked for them until a dead man was caught with a stolen item.

The reports sent in by the team of physicians indicated that the man had died two days earlier. And that report was authenticated and verified. It was not a fallacy. It had no element of falsification. No lie. No form of falsehood. Just plain truth and it was unquestionable.

This was more profound because the physicians in the land were held in high regards as concerning the matters of integrity. Their profession had granted them the duty and responsibility to handle human lives and with such huge task, they must be people who would not lie or deal falsely. Human lives are so valuable to be dealt with untruthfully. Their reports must be the truth and not different from it. Their diagnosis must be true. Nothing lesser than it. Nothing above it. The truth would do. It was enough. And so they were held in high trust. Their word was truth.

Another group with such responsibility by oath to always report what is true and nothing different was their police force. The reason been that their reports from investigations can send men to jails or declare them innocent. And pronouncing the innocent guilty or the guilty innocent was an unthinkable crime. Putting the innocent under condemnation and behind bars while the guilty roams the street was also unthinkable. Such errors were grave and the police could not afford to make them.

The team of physicians report indicated that the man had died two days ago, while police reports indicated that the stolen item under his grasp was stolen a day ago. A conflicting situation, it was.

Because both professions 'cannot' lie. Both were seen as 'true' and yet the question was what really happened? Does dead people steal? Do the dead leave the land of the dead and take his journey back to that of the living to steal? Is it possible?

What if the dead man was a thief when he lived and at the point of death discovers that he had not stolen one thing he had so planned and hoped to steal to 'crown up' or seal his life of thievery, would his ghost go back and steal before finally finding rest in the after life and then place it within the hold and grasp of the dead man? Was that possible?

There were lots of questions and they were increasing and an answers were needed. The judges decided to answer, at least since others arms of government were quiet and the masses was increasingly curious and agitated.

The judges sat and based on what was written as one of the laws of the land, they pronounced the dead man a thief, and as required, must face judgment. Can the dead be accused of a crime? Is a dead man capable of stealing? And who expects a dead man to appear for hearing in a court room to defend himself?

Or is it possible that someone decided to do what they thought was not thinkable. A man stealing for another other than himself. A man that steals maybe to implicate another. Was that one worthy of been called a thief, they thought. The seed of true stealing is selfishness- personal selfishness. Personal gain. If the thief fails to steal from that point of motive, then he is not fit to be called a thief and if that is the case, how would this case of the dead man that stole 'after' his death be handled? These were the thoughts in the mind or the people as they await their wise king and his elders in council to decide.

If you were the king, what would be your thoughts?

This is a short work that I wrote. I don't know the exact class of writings to place it. So, I will just say its a short story with a question at the end.
I will be so grateful if the readers would try to share their thoughts about the situation. But to do that, I would prefer you assume you are one of the citizens and as such, you would think as they do.
With that thinking pattern, try and solve the crime or provide a proper explanation to what you think possibly happened.
Thank you... happy reading and solving..!

CHAPTER 7

I made sure I reported for work the next day. It was necessary I did. First, to avoid suspicion. Any sign of disloyalty or irregular commitment to work, which is one of my civil duties would be seen as suspicion and civil rebellion.

The reason is because some 'persons' were watching me. Before now, I did not know if any was watching me. I did not care. I did not think I was important, that I was worth anyone's attention. But what I just knew, the conspiracy going on among the elders of our anopheles community to mass murder lots of mosquitoes, made me feel I was been watched.

Whoever was watching me, I didn't know. That is one of the things that comes with knowing some bad secrets, you feel you are been monitored. I must be careful. I am sure Dad was been monitored that way till they killed him.

Dad was a very intelligent warrior and one of the traits that strong warriors like him possessed was the ability to be on the alert. To watch. To be sensitive. To keep watch over what is going on around you.

But Dad, despite his keen sense of alertness was still struck down. He knew he was going to be killed, but he didn't know when. I was sure I was not as keen minded as Dad, so I felt it was most proper for me to extremely cautious.

After work and providing my report for the day at the reading unit, where I was recently posted to, I left for home. Or so, I made whoever was capable of getting suspicious feel.

Meeting the little group of the Resistance was elating. It made me feel differently. I felt for the first time that I was part of something big, something worthwhile. Something that would make a difference. I felt not been odd as I had felt for a major part of my life. Maybe, this was what I was born to do. Maybe.

I sat and listened intently. I discovered to my shock that the elder, that male anopheles that was busy acting all caring was one of the bad fellows. He was dirty. And the more I listened, the more I saw how evil he was. I learnt that he and Dad were the first to discover that they were 'invincible' and resistant to the effect of the killer gas.

But he wanted to do something with that knowledge. Something evil. Why? Greed. Quest for power. Excessive quest for it. Intense greed for power. A desire to prove some supremacy and superiority. A maddening desire. This desire led him to kill his close friend, my Dad. When he saw that all his talks and promises that they would have nothing to loose but possess all the good things was not accepted but Dad, he decided that it was needful to eliminate him.

But what he did not know was that Dad had planted a seed that was going to be hard to eliminate. One that would outlive Dad. Dad had let a few loyals to know what was on.

What he did was 'disloyal', breaking his oath of secrecy with the council members but his motive was for good- to save lives.

That was typical of Dad- sacrificing the lesser good for a higher good. He disappointed the council to save many of the citizens. As soon as his evil and pretending friend discovered it, he took it upon himself to punish him by killing him. He made himself the judge and executor.

We were to lead a campaign secretly, to inform in discreet manner, all the family heads of what was going on. This would be a weapon that we would use- the weapon of the families heads voting power. By doing that, we would properly inform the family heads so that they would vote rightly and not ignorantly at the Adult Males meeting.

To be for warned is to be fore armed.

They had the right to determine if they would live or not. No one had the right to choose for them. No one had the power to determine who was to live or die. It was not the power of the council. The right to live was a universal right, and each individual was to chose for him or herself.

But we thought our task was going to be easy in as much as we were careful. But we were wrong. We were late in getting careful. We had already gotten careless.

Unknown to us, some anopheles were planted to infiltrate the Resistance. They were spies. They were highly intelligent readers that could so blend in and not get detected.

We didn't check any out. This was typical of many resistant forces. They trust easily and feel everyone present was there for the good of their cause. And since, we like all resistance forces were considered rebels, disloyal and therefore punishable by law upon discovery, we did our meetings secretly and quickly. No time to waste time. We had to go straight to the agenda of the day. This haste coated us badly.

As a result, we let in some of the enemies in. And that would cost us dearly. Again I say, dearly.

Aquariann:
Which men are you talking to? Same men raised under the same roof with these girls?

Our fathers failed us all. The boys (and young men) you see today don't know jack about what it is to be a father, you know why? Because our mothers made the job of keeping the home easy for our fathers. So our fathers didn't bother to show us the way and how to handle our homes or kids. The fatherly abilities is already missing from these men you're talking about.

That is why divorce rates are at an all time high these days because these men expect women to do all the work just like their mothers. But the train has since left the station. The society is no longer suppressing and ostracizing like before.

10 - 20 years from now when the kids we've sired with baby mamas all over the place grow up, we'll come to know what a society in chaos means. But for now, let's all enjoy the decline that are part of the consequences of being free to live as we want.
Some facts here. We just have to find a way to do a better job than our parents did. To make that possible, we need to go back to basic moral values. Reading books on these, joining organizations that uphold moral values can also help. Quality mentorship is a plus too.
Good thoughts...Aquariann

In as much as I totally agree with your write up, I would like to add that the society we live in including the men folk make it seem as if the virtues you just highlighted are dependant on only if the woman is successful or has potential for success. Hence the women are moving with trends.
Thanks.. lots

CHAPTER 6

What I heard from Mom was alarming to me. It changed whatever thoughts I had had in the past weeks regarding Dad's death. I never knew it was going to be this different. For all I cared, I had thought that Dad was killed by the killer gas- the poisonous gas that humans spray on us to kill us.

I knew that Dad was murdered. I knew it was a planned one. A set up. The conversation I had heard at the center when the readers came in to give their reports was the reason for that. But far more heartbreaking was that he was killed by the 'people' he loved.

His close friend and friends were responsible. His fellow council members. He was betrayed by his own. His own colleagues. His own fellow statesmen and warriors.

Many times, it takes someone close to do you evil. Evil done in a close range rarely fails to get the anticipated result.

But far worst is an unmerited evil. Some evil are merited. They are just consequences of transgressions and evil done. They are logical outcomes of disobedience and wrong actions. Such are merited evil or rather merited pain. But Dad? His wasn't.

What is the merit is killing one who wants good for everyone? What is the moral justification is killing one who wants others to be kept alive? What is the civility in destroying one who believes in the right of co- existence? Who believes in live and let's live?

Dad was given an evil treatment, a treatment his kind never deserves. He was killed for wanting to be good. When did such noble desire become a crime?

At that moment, I resolved to get for Dad, the justice he was denied. I felt it was the best gift I could give to Dad. He had the right to justice. I was not going to deny his spirit that. I was going to give him a parting gift of justice. Those evil anopheles, those betrayers and murderers of their own would be brought to book.

I must expose them for the evil and fraud that they are. I must let others see the evil they are made of. I must let the community see how twisted their minds and thoughts are.

What kind of leadership is that? Is it not in the duty and role of leaders to protect their citizens? When has the citizens been considered a burden, a pain and an inconvenience to be done away with? Who gave the leadership the right to plot the down fall of the citizens they represent?

I was not going to do nothing. Even if it takes the last atom of my being, justice must be done.

After listening to Mom, I knew where to start from. Dad had started out a little group of some courageous anopheles who were bent on resisting the plan to initiate the 'class' or caste system and use evil means to eradicate the so called 'lesser' species.

I was going to meet with them and know what to do. To see if there is any working plan on ground that Dad left for the group. To know the available hands and resources and where to come in.

What I wanted to do, I could end up doing alone. But that would only be possible in a distant time. At this stage, I need fellows who can help, who share the same ambition and burden to work with.

To go fast, go alone. To go far, go with others.

CHAPTER 5

"Life is not as easy as it seems", Mom started. "There is much to life that the eyes don't see. In fact, most things in life are not seen. They are done behind the backs of many, outside the observation of many. It takes one on the inside to know some things and one with a keen eyes too"

What was it? What was Mon saying? Why can't she just go straight to the point and stop beating around the bush. My curiosity was taking strong hold on me. And I was loosing patience quickly.

Mom was not one given to talking around corners. She was a straight talker- always going to the point. Why she is stalling, I do not know.

As if Mom was reading my mind, she said, "I know you are loosing patience"

I nodded.

"Its alright. Patience has always not been your strong suit. You've always been given to quickness- quick acts and all others. And that if you are not careful would put you in trouble, and make you make hasty decisions that could lead to bigger problems"

Enough of these lectures Mom, I thought. Is this the time for another mother- son counselling session? I just wanted to get answers. Answers that you dragged me into feeling curious to seek for.

"The community was growing and not just ours but others too. And with the increase in population and decline in food- human blood availability, there was pressure. Pressure to survive. And with time, a system of class was noted by the research unit. A strange one the would lead to deaths of many"

"Deaths of many?", I asked.

"Yes, and even more worse. They discovered that some of the anopheles were developing resistance to the killer gas that humans spray. And even when sprayed in their presence, they would not fail or pass out"

"Is that possible? I thought no mosquito could survive the killer gas"

"We all thought so until few weeks ago. The information got to the council and they swore to keep it as a secret and that any who broke the oath would be killed"

"Was that why Dad was killed?"

"There is more. Just be patient. Beyond getting to know about the discovery and deciding to keep it as a secret among themselves from the community, some elders felt that these resistant ones were better and more advanced species of our kind. That they are the future of our community and as such are worth proper care and attention to keep them alive.

"They must not die, they insisted. They must be given prior attention and regard. And to do this, whenever human blood comes in, a major portion should be given to them. And such portion, if set aside for them, would make the so- called lesser species stay without blood meal and in that way, they would be systematically eliminated from the anopheles community by starvation"

"That is pure evil", I spoke angrily

"That was what your Dad said and that was where his problem with them started. And that costed his life. He died because of the good he wanted to stand for. He died because he wanted fairness for everyone. He said, it was not the goodness of the so called few that got resistant to the killer gases. And that it was not the fault of those who are not resistant to the gas to be like that. And as such, there is no need and basis for special treatment for any"

"Dad was right. And I am sure they disagreed with him and killed him. He must have been killed by the killer gas just to prove to him that what he was fighting for was not worth it"

Mom smiled, "Your Dad did not die of the killer gas"

"What?"

"You Dad was also resistant to the killer gas"

I gasped.
