This is a short work that I wrote. I don't know the exact class of writings to place it. So, I will just say its a short story with a question at the end.
I will be so grateful if the readers would try to share their thoughts about the situation. But to do that, I would prefer you assume you are one of the citizens and as such, you would think as they do.
With that thinking pattern, try and solve the crime or provide a proper explanation to what you think possibly happened.
Thank you... happy reading and solving..!

THE DEAD MAN THAT STOLE

In a distant land at an unknown time, among a people whose laws and pattern of thinking are far in nature, meaning and interpretation from normal human laws, an incident occurred which made everyone got confused since it defied all solution.

This distant land was one of the greatest civilizations of its time. They had a great and wise king who was feared within and outside the kingdom because of his great strength and wisdom. He was a king given so much to the pursuit of knowledge. For him, books were his best companions and he would spend hours and hours and sometimes, days after days reading, studying and meditating.

He wanted to rule his people well and he did all he could to become a king that would be qualified to do so. He didn't take for granted his place and position as king, and never relented in making efforts to discharge his responsibilities to his people properly and honorably. For him been a king was not a thing of praise, where the praise comes in is in becoming a dutiful and effective king. The position was not it but rather the performance.

Because he wanted the best for his people, he believed that knowledge was key, that a man with knowledge has more advantage in life than the one without. That a knowledgeable cobbler was many times qualified to succeed than an ignorant one. And so, he set up centers of learning for his people to go and acquire knowledge and he made them so affordable that even the poorest of citizens could afford it.

But apart from his love for knowledge, he had something else that obsessed him- his quest for morality. He wanted his land to be known as a land of morals and high values. He wanted his people to be taught moral values, to acquire them and practice them.

But that was not all, he ensured that the council of elders were men of high moral values and enacters of moral laws to rule and properly administer the land. The land is as good as it's laws, he would always say.

And in the quest of establishing a highly moral kingdom, they put in some laws that were strange to say the least. Nobody noticed anything strange with such laws simply because no one had broken them. A law would seem uncontroversial until when broken and then a proper verdict would be required to be passed as judgment

One of those laws stated: "If any stolen item is FOUND in any person's possession, that person would be charged for stealing it and then judged"

It seemed easy, for them. The reason been that the people rarely steal. And secondly, who steals what he or she does not intend to use? As far as they could reason, if any man steals a thing, it must be because he had need for it. The thief steals for his selfish benefit whatever it is. Be it food to eat, clothes to wear or whatever. He does not steal to pass what he has stolen to another. That could not even be thought of as possible. And it would even be so impossible for one to steal so as to implicate another. These were their thoughts and it worked for them until a dead man was caught with a stolen item.

The reports sent in by the team of physicians indicated that the man had died two days earlier. And that report was authenticated and verified. It was not a fallacy. It had no element of falsification. No lie. No form of falsehood. Just plain truth and it was unquestionable.

This was more profound because the physicians in the land were held in high regards as concerning the matters of integrity. Their profession had granted them the duty and responsibility to handle human lives and with such huge task, they must be people who would not lie or deal falsely. Human lives are so valuable to be dealt with untruthfully. Their reports must be the truth and not different from it. Their diagnosis must be true. Nothing lesser than it. Nothing above it. The truth would do. It was enough. And so they were held in high trust. Their word was truth.

Another group with such responsibility by oath to always report what is true and nothing different was their police force. The reason been that their reports from investigations can send men to jails or declare them innocent. And pronouncing the innocent guilty or the guilty innocent was an unthinkable crime. Putting the innocent under condemnation and behind bars while the guilty roams the street was also unthinkable. Such errors were grave and the police could not afford to make them.

The team of physicians report indicated that the man had died two days ago, while police reports indicated that the stolen item under his grasp was stolen a day ago. A conflicting situation, it was.

Because both professions 'cannot' lie. Both were seen as 'true' and yet the question was what really happened? Does dead people steal? Do the dead leave the land of the dead and take his journey back to that of the living to steal? Is it possible?

What if the dead man was a thief when he lived and at the point of death discovers that he had not stolen one thing he had so planned and hoped to steal to 'crown up' or seal his life of thievery, would his ghost go back and steal before finally finding rest in the after life and then place it within the hold and grasp of the dead man? Was that possible?

There were lots of questions and they were increasing and an answers were needed. The judges decided to answer, at least since others arms of government were quiet and the masses was increasingly curious and agitated.

The judges sat and based on what was written as one of the laws of the land, they pronounced the dead man a thief, and as required, must face judgment. Can the dead be accused of a crime? Is a dead man capable of stealing? And who expects a dead man to appear for hearing in a court room to defend himself?

Or is it possible that someone decided to do what they thought was not thinkable. A man stealing for another other than himself. A man that steals maybe to implicate another. Was that one worthy of been called a thief, they thought. The seed of true stealing is selfishness- personal selfishness. Personal gain. If the thief fails to steal from that point of motive, then he is not fit to be called a thief and if that is the case, how would this case of the dead man that stole 'after' his death be handled? These were the thoughts in the mind or the people as they await their wise king and his elders in council to decide.

If you were the king, what would be your thoughts?
