The Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, has accused the All Progressives Congress and the Independent National Electoral Commission of colluding to preload card readers for the July 14 governorship election in the state.

The governor said the plot to manipulate the poll in favour of the APC candidate, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, was being perpetrated in Akure, Ondo State, in collaboration with the state government.

He made the allegation on Friday on a broadcast programme, ‘Governor Explains’, in Ado Ekiti.

Fayose, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Idowu Adelusi, on Saturday, said, “I don’t want to bring this picture out yet, but those who said preloading is not possible are lying. Right now, they are doing manual preloading in Akure as I speak. For polling units with over 1,000 voters, they spread the preloading to between 50 and 200 votes per polling unit.

“In Ikere, 58 of such polling units were targeted and Ado Ekiti has 158 of such polling units. They want to get people they will stuff with the ballot papers and dump such papers in the ballot boxes at such polling units.

“They are also printing fake voter cards in Akure with support from the Ondo State Government. They are also working to bring in about 14,000 people from Ondo State to come and vote here. They have already issued fake 7,000 voter cards and they are daily printing this.

“They promised to give each person N15,000 if he/she helps them stuff ballot boxes with the fake ballot papers they are printing.”

He also challenged Fayemi to account for the over N46bn he collected as excess crude oil funds while in office.

According to the governor, Fayemi lacks the moral right to seek re-election after allegedly plunging the state into debt.

But the Director of Media and Publicity, Kayode Fayemi Campaign Organisation, Wole Olujobi, said Fayose’s conscience, for the first time, was pricking him over his “unprecedented, historic and historical 2014 poll fraud.”

He added, “All over the world, Fayose’s voice was heard on the popular Captain Sagir Koli’s audio tape harassing a major-general of the Nigerian Army and forcing him to carry out his orders to assist him in the manipulation of the electoral process through illegal arrests and intimidation of the opposition to enable him win the election.

“Fayose’s voice was heard on the audio tape talking about how he collected sensitive copies of INEC materials that he said he printed to win the election. On the same audio tape, he spoke about how he collated election results in Efon-Alaaye on Thursday, June 19, 2014, two clear days before the June 21, 2014 election.”

Former speaker of the House of Representatives, Ghali Na’Abba, has said he regretted leaving the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP for the All Progressives Congress, APC, in 2015.

Na’Abba said this in an interview with Vanguard where he also accused President Muhammadu Buhari of running a one-man show.

The ex-Speaker, whose house was burnt down for supporting the PDP in 2011 but took the painful decision to leave for the APC, said his expectations for leaving the PDP to APC have not been met, adding that he only has regrets.

He said, “My experience in the APC is such that I only have regrets to tell because I found a party that is divided and there is no unity of purpose.

“It is a party that produced the president but the president does not work with the party. In fact the president does not work with anybody. He works only with himself.

“My experience in the APC is that in the last three years, there were only four or five caucus meetings. The time lag between the first one in February 2016 and the second one in October/ November 2017 was sixteen months.

“I was not invited to the fourth and fifth meetings because in an interview with a Network I indicated my intention not to support Buhari’s re-election in 2019.

“A situation where dissent is not tolerated in a democratic arrangement portends danger to our democracy. Therefore, the party and Buhari have become one and the same thing.

“APC is an amalgam of interests that came together to do away with the PDP which by the grace of God they succeeded.

“The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in now from the party. But instead of the president to coalesce the disparate tendencies within the party, so that it becomes cohesive, he decided to operate a one man show, working neither with the party nor the National Assembly.

The United States Congress has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to publicly condemn attacks on Christian farmers by Fulani herdsmen, accusing him of being indifferent.

Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ), Chair of the House Sub-committee on Global Human Rights and a senior member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, spoke while welcoming the release of the State Department’s annual International Religious Freedom Report.

He said: “Congress is watching the situation in Nigeria with growing concern, as the Nigerian government there appears too often to be indifferent to attacks by Fulani herdsmen on predominantly Christian farmers.

“The confluence of religious, ethnic, economic and political tensions is only likely to be exacerbated in the lead-up to elections next year unless President Muhammadu Buhari speaks out with a clear voice condemning the herdsmen attacks.

“We grieve with the families of those killed, including those of two priests and 17 worshipers who were buried just last week following an attack by herdsmen in Benue state in April.

“Getting the facts right on the global state of religious freedom is essential for the shaping of U.S. policy and priorities, and that is why the State Department’s annual report is so important.

“I welcome the report’s release and urge concerted action to protect this fundamental freedom.

“Religious freedom is under siege globally, challenging U.S. interests. It is no coincidence that the worst violators of religious freedom globally are also the biggest threats to our nation—those who wish to do Americans the most harm, and those who most want to tear down the pillars of democratic societies.”

Briefing journalists on the report, the US Department of State’s Ambassador-at-large for International Religious Freedom, Samuel Brownback said he would travel to Nigeria in June.

“To talk with leaders, government leaders, religious leaders, Christian and Muslim; to talk about what we can do to move forward; to reduce the level of violence; to open the way for religious freedom.

“I have been meeting with a number of different Nigerian leaders, and it’s been a very difficult- I met with three leaders, last week. And they said to me – Sunday used to be the day they hated to see coming the most because that is when most of the attacks would take place.”

He said that the Nigerian government had the responsibility to protect the right to freedom of religion, adding that the US would continue to push Nigeria to do that.

“Our effort is for religious freedom for everybody, regardless of faith, or even if you’re a person without faith, but that you are free to do with your own conscience whatever you choose and that no government has the right to interfere with that,” he added.

The report noted that there were incidents of killings and other forms of violence between members of different religious groups in Nigeria in 2017.

It reads in part: “Many killings occurred between farmers and herders in the central Middle Belt region, where farmers are predominantly Christians and from various ethnic groups, and herders are predominantly Fulani Muslims.

“This violence included religious differences as a factor, according to scholars and other experts, but also involved ethnicity, politics, and increasing competition over dwindling land resources as a result of population growth, soil degradation, and internal displacement from other forms of violence and criminality occurring in the north.”

The report chronicled many of the killings and clashes which had a religious undertone that took place in Nigeria in the year under review.

It stated: “The government continued to detain the leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), the country’s largest Shia group, and restrict the activities, free movement, and free association of its members.

“There were no reports of accountability for soldiers implicated in the December 2015 clash between the army and IMN members that, according to a Kaduna State government report and reports from non-government observers, left at least 348 IMN members and one soldier dead, with IMN members buried in a mass graves.”

The report also stated that both Muslim and Christian groups said there was lack of just handling of their mutual disputes and inadequate protection by federal, state, and local authorities, especially in central regions, where there were longstanding, violent disputes between Hausa and Fulani Muslims and Christian ethnic groups.

It said: “In disputes between primarily Christian farmers and Muslim herders, herders stated they did not receive justice when their members were killed or their cattle were stolen by the farming community, which they said caused them to carry out retaliatory attacks. Farmers stated that security forces did not intervene when their villages were being attacked by herdsmen.”

Oni, who was an aspirant on the platform of APC, said Fayemi may not win the election because the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and incumbent deputy governor, Prof Kolapo Olusola Eleka, alongside Governor Ayodele Fayose were reaching out to people of the state.

In a statement issued signed by the Director General (DG) of his Campaign Organization, Dr Ife Arowosoge, Oni lamented that people were gradually leaving APC for PDP in Ekiti State.

According to Oni, “It is for Fayemi himself to warn his supporters to desist from such image boosting but dangerous campaigns, which are still going on now.

“The July 14 governorship election, which is about 5 weeks away will not be such a Tea Party with Governor Ayodele Fayose, a second term governor and De Facto candidate of PDP who has been campaigning now for more than one year.

“For those who care to know, Fayose controls all the 16 local governments with the second set of elected officials. When Fayose was involved in voter registration drive in every local government in Ekiti, our Minister was staying in his Ivory Tower in Abuja.

“Some people are today leaving the APC because they feel their interests cannot be protected by the APC candidate because of his style and disposition towards this coming election.

“Some who are not moving out of the party are even saying they may “sitdown look” and stay aloof for another four years.

“We know of 2 local governments in the state, where the APC members are threatening to move out en masse for the same reason.

“We have read the rebuttal of Mr Wole Olujobi/JKFCO to our plea for unity and inclusiveness of Chief Segun Oni and other contestants in the campaign for the July 14 governorship election. We were not quick at replying because we never wanted to at all, but because of the continued but unwarranted attacks on the Segun Oni Team, which was what our original release meant to stop and to unite and tie us together like a bunch of brooms which is the symbol of our great party, we have to make ourselves very clear on some new points raised by the rejoinder of Mr Wole Olujobi on behalf of the Campaign Organisation of JKF.

“We wonder if Mr. Wole Olujobi really knows or cares about the enormity of the danger his words and actions and those of people like him as supporters of Dr. Kayode Fayemi have started creating for our party?

“If Dr. Kayode Fayemi thinks, he can win the governorship election the way he won the primary election, we wish him luck. But as a party, APC should not be deceiving itself.

“We know that the July 14 election will be decided by these people and not by just 941 delegates who voted for Fayemi during the primary and who is just a fraction of the Civil Servants or Teachers, not to talk of other aggrieved sectors in the State.

“But Segun Oni and his Team, around whom such powerful goodwill of electability by Ekiti Electorate is woven, is gradually been ostracized out of the APC in the state. Our fear and concern is that the above potent a gloomy prognostication for a successful governorship election.”

Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose has reacted to the shooting at the All Progressive Congress, APC, rally for the party’s candidate, Kayode Fayemi.

Fayemi is having in all these challenges because of his desperation. It is instructive that there was chaos at the APC primary election and his return to Ekiti today brought bloodshed to a once peaceful Ekiti State.Those whom the gods want to destroy, they first make mad.

I sympathize with victims of today's shootings by armed policemen that Fayemi and his APC invaded our State with and I have directed adequate treatment of the injured ones that are receiving treatment at the State University Teaching Hospital.
