Ibrahim Idris, the Inspector-General of Police, has deployed an intervention force to various parts of Plateau State where there have been attacks.

This is following the Saturday night attack by suspected herdsmen that killed more than 100 people in the state.

Jimoh Moshood, spokesman of the Nigeria Police Force, made this known in a statement he released on Monday.

To lead the intervention force, Joshiak Habila, the Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Department of Operations, has been ordered by the IGP to relocate to Jos.

Two helicopters, five Armored Personnel Carriers, and three Police Mobile Force Units were despatched to aid the intervention exercise. 

The intervention force also includes two counter-terrorism units, police intelligence unit as well as conventional police personnel from other states.

A report by Brookings Institution, a nonprofit public policy organization in USA, has put Nigeria atop the world poverty statistics — ahead of India.

The report, titled ‘The Start of a New Poverty Narrative', says Nigeria has now taken over as the nation with the highest number of extremely poor people in the world, while the Republic of Congo is also rising as the second poorest in the world.

The report reads: “According to our projections, Nigeria has already overtaken India as the country with the largest number of extreme poor in early 2018, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo could soon take over the number 2 spot (Figure 1 below).

"At the end of May 2018, our trajectories suggest that Nigeria had about 87 million people in extreme poverty, compared with India’s 73 million. What is more, extreme poverty in Nigeria is growing by six people every minute, while poverty in India continues to fall.”

The report also predicted that by the end of 2018, there would be 3.2 million extremely poor people on the continent of Afrcia. 

It says: “In fact, by the end of 2018 in Africa as a whole, there will probably be about 3.2 million more people living in extreme poverty than there are today.

"Africans account for about two-thirds of the world’s extreme poor and that If current trends persist, Africa will account for nine-tenths by 2030. Fourteen out of 18 countries in the world — where the number of extreme poor is rising — are in Africa.”

The report observed that it is becoming increasingly difficult to achieve the first goal of the Sustainable Development Goals, which is ending poverty.

I“Between January 1, 2016 — when implementation of internationally agreed Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) started — and July 2018, the world has seen about 83 million people escape extreme poverty," it stated. "But if extreme poverty were to fall to zero by 2030, we should have already reduced the number by about 120 million, just assuming a linear trajectory. To get rid of this backlog of some 35 million people, we now have to rapidly step up the pace.”

Former aviation minister Femi Fani Kayode is remembering the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, whose whereabouts no one is aware of ever since his home was invaded by the Nigerian Army in September.

'Today is the happiest day of my life' - Sacked Spain coach, Julen Lopetegui says as Real Madrid unveils him as next manager

Julen Lopetegui has been officially unveiled as the new manager of Real Madrid after he was sacked bySpain on eve of the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
The Spanish Football Federation (SFF)  sacked Lopetegui on Wednesday after he was announced as next Real Madrid coach on Tuesday despite having committed his future to Spain's national team by signing a deal until 2020.

Spanish FA president Luis Rubiales claimed he was only aware Lopetegui had agreed on a deal five minutes before Real announced it.

Speaking at his unveiling at a press conference on Thursday evening, the former Real goalkeeper,  said: 'We will try and win everything. I just want to thank everyone, I feel like part of the Real family. Yesterday, after the death of my mother, was the saddest of my life, but today is the happiest day of my life.'


Before Lopetegui spoke, Real president Florentino Perez accused the Spanish FA of 'disrespecting' Real and attempting to 'destroy our image' in an extraordinary statement.

He said: 'We wanted to have this act after the World Cup, a successful World Cup for our national team. However circumstances mean we are here now, and we are delighted to welcome the new manager of our team.

'I know for you, Julen, today is a day of a lot of feelings, strange feelings, as you wanted to be world champion, you wanted to make Spain champion of the world and then be manager of your dear Real Madrid.

Yola court passes death sentence on 5 men for killing herdsman

A Yola High Court Presided over by Justice Abdul-Azeez Waziri has sentenced five men to death for culpable homicide and for killing a herdsman.

The convicts, Alex Amos, Alheri Phanuel, Holy Boniface, Jerry Gideon and Jari Sabagi of Demsa Local Government Area of Adamawa State, were found guilty of criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide which contravened Section 96 (1) (a) and Sections 79 and 221 (b) of the Penal Code of Laws of Adamawa State, 1997.



The convicts were said to have on June 1, 2017 at Kadamun village in Demsa local Government Area willfully and intentionally conspired and attacked three herdsmen rearing cattle, killing one of them, Adamu Buba, whose body they threw into a river and also maimed several cows. Justice Waziri said the case against the accused persons had been proved beyond reasonable doubt by the counsel to the state, Mr. Salihu Mohammed.

He ruled: “I hereby sentence the accused persons on counts one and two to death by hanging, while on counts four and five, I sentence the accused to three years in prison to run concurrently. “Any aggrieved party is at liberty to file an appeal to the Court of Appeal, Yola Judicial Division within 90 days from today.”

Eight suspects, including a man who claimed to be an Army officer, have been paraded by the Kogi Command of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC.

The state Commandant of NSCDC, Mr. Everestus Obiyo, who paraded the suspects in Lokoja yesterday, said the alleged Army officer was arrested on June 6.

Obiyo, who identified the fake soldier as Bartholomew Paul, said he was arrested at a military checkpoint at Ayere, Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area of the state. According to him, Paul was arrested by vigilant soldiers who stopped, searched his vehicle and discovered military uniforms, two military identity cards and other incriminating items.

He said the Army later handed over the suspect to NSCDC, adding that investigation into the matter commenced immediately. The Commandant said the suspect had been using the uniform, identity card and other items to smuggle cars into the country through Seme Border.

Obiyo listed other items recovered from him to include a black Lexus jeep, two military passports and a dependent military identity card. He said further that the other seven suspects were arrested for vandalising oil pipelines, electric and telecommunication cables and being in illegal possession of firearms.

The Commandant added that suspects had made useful statements to the NSCDC. Meanwhile, the alleged fake Army officer has said he was in the business of buying vehicles from Benin Republic for his clients in Nigeria. He said the military items recovered from him were meant to evade security checks.
