PoliticsPolice Arrest Fake Efcc Official by Ayele12(op): 2:34pm On Oct 13, 2011
A 31-year-old man who allegedly presented himself as an official of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has been arrested by the police in Aba, Abia State.
The man, who hails from Okada Local Government Area of Edo, was arrested on Thursday with the assistance of members of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), Aba Chapter.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that but for the timely intervention of the police and IPMAN officials, the man would have been lynched by a mob at Osisioma, in Aba, for allegedly duping a dealer of N60,000.
On interrogation by the Aba Area Police Commander, Mr. Rabiu Dayi, the suspect allegedly confessed that he impersonated as an EFCC official.
He, however, said he only went to the filling station to harass the dealer for selling adulterated fuel to him in February, and denied collecting money from the dealer.
The suspect claimed to be a former staff of the anti-graft agency, adding that he left the commission this year after working at its headquarters in Abuja.
``I am no longer with the agency, I cannot lie to you. I worked in the Investigation Department under Mr. Shedrack, as a graduate with the rank of ``DSP’’, he told NAN

PoliticsAbdulmutallab Pleads Guilty, Faces Life Jail by Ayele12(op): 8:14am On Oct 13, 2011
The trial of Farouk Abdulmutallab accused of trying to blow up a commercial airliner on Christmas Day in 2009, abruptly ended yesterday as he pleaded guilty to each of the eight counts against him.

The sudden reversal came before the start of the second day of proceedings in the trial of Mr. Abdulmutallab, who is not a lawyer but who was representing himself.
The eight counts include attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction and conspiring to commit an act of terrorism. The charges carried a penalty of life in prison, but the details of the plea were not immediately available.
On the opening day of the trial on Tuesday, Jonathan Tukel, an assistant United States attorney, described the outlines of the government’s case against Mr. Abdulmutallab, 24, in a lengthy opening statement.
But a lawyer assigned to assist Mr. Abdulmutallab told jurors that the defense did not intend to give an opening statement.

PoliticsSss Arrests October 1 ‘bombers’ by Ayele12(op): 11:06am On Oct 12, 2011
Three suspects, including a banker, have been arrested over two car bombings on last year’s Independence Day in Abuja, which killed at least 12 people, the State Security Service said yesterday. One of the three men, who was declared wanted and said to be “an expert” in improvised explosive devices, “was a key figure in the October 1 bombings as he procured all the explosive devices used,” spokesman for the service Marilyn Ogar told journalists in Abuja.

He was traced to “a neighbouring country” and arrested in Lagos on Sunday, she said.“He is believed to be an expert in Improvised Explosive Devises (IEDs) and was a key figure in the October 1st bombing as he procured all the explosive devices used; packaged and wired the vehicles and finally moved them to Abuja from Port Harcourt for final placement at the point of detonation,” Ogar said. The second suspect, a banker, allegedly handled all financial transactions for Henry Okah, in the March 15 and October 1 car bombings respectively in Warri, Delta State, and Abuja.“He was responsible for the fund transfers to the suspects to facilitate gun-running activities in the creek,” she said.Okah, who is facing terrorism charges in South Africa, where he has a permanent residence, has been accused of orchestrating the Abuja twin car bombings near the scene of the Independence Day celebrations.

SportsNations Cup: Siasia Misled Us – Yobo by Ayele12(op): 7:53pm On Oct 11, 2011
Nigeria crashed out of the Africa Cup of Nations after being held to a 2-2 draw by Guinea in Abuja because Super Eagles coach Samson Siasia was under the impression his team needed a 3-1 victory, to qualify, elombah.com has learnt. Nigeria captain Joseph Yobo was left deflated after ill-informed team officials misled the Super Eagles during the African Cup of Nations qualifier against Guinea on Saturday. Nigeria were 2-1 up in their AFCON clash with
Guinea at the Abuja National Stadium, and would most likely have qualified as one of the best runners-up if that had been the final score. However, Yobo has revealed team officials informed the players they needed to score three goals to qualify, which resulted in Nigeria going on an all-out attack.

The risky strategy left them exposed at the back and saw Guinea net an equaliser in stoppage time to bring an end to Nigeria’s AFCON dreams.

“We all went to attack because the officials told us we needed a third goal to ensure our qualification. That was our biggest undoing,” said Yobo.

PoliticsN5.2bn Scam: Court Throws Out Elumelu, Ugbane’s Application by Ayele12(op): 10:32am On Oct 11, 2011
A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, sitting in Abuja on October 10, 2011, dismissed an application for a stay of proceeding filed by a former House Committee Chairman on Power, Hon. Ndudi Elumelu and his counterpart in the Senate, Senator Nicholas Ugbane, who are being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, over alleged N5.2 billion fraud in the Rural Electrification Agency (REA).
Elumelu alongside Ugbane and Hon Jibo Mohammed had filed the application claiming that the Federal government had accepted and paid for the contract for which they are being prosecuted and therefore should be discharged and acquitted from the trial. They had filed supportive affidavit evidencing letters from the Ministry of power accepting the contract.
But the EFCC, through its counsel, Kemi Phinero, SAN, challenged the application saying that the prosecution of the accused persons should go its full course and judgment delivered on their impropriety.
At the resumed hearing of the case on October 10, 2011, presiding judge, Justice Adebunkola Banjoko ruled that such an application by the accused person was strange as it was brought under the inherent jurisdiction of the court. She specifically said that there was no law to support the application. “what you are doing is heralding jurisdiction without substance or merit’, the judge ruled.
While adjourning to November 30, 2011, for definite hearing, the judge said that the accused persons should not confuse being charged under a written law, with proof of commission of the offence; adding that the crime in which they were charged amounted to abetting a criminal breach of trust and that they should be prepared to face trial.

PoliticsElections Tribunal Throws Out Dimeji Bankole’s Petition by Ayele12(op): 8:36pm On Oct 10, 2011
The hopes of former Speaker, Hon Saburi Oladimeji Bankole to return to the House of Representatives were on Monday dashed as the National and State House of Assembly Election Tribunal sitting in Abeokuta dismissed his petition.

The former Speaker had approached the tribunal on April 29, in suit NO.EPT/OG/FH/02/201 to challenge the outcome of the April 9 National Assembly Election in Abeokuta South Federal Constituency.
Honourable Bankole told the court that he and not his opponent, Hon Segun Williams polled majority of lawful votes cast. He therefore objected to the declaration of Hon. Segun Williams of Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) as the winner of the election.

PoliticsImo State Commissioner For Commerce Has Been Kidnapped! by Ayele12(op): 3:15pm On Oct 10, 2011
Imo State Commissioner For Commerce Kidnapped!

In absolute defiance of Governor Rochas Okorocha’s recently declared war on kidnappers and their activities in Imo State, the perpetrators of the nefarious act have struck again in the state. This time, they showed readiness to confront the constituted authority in the state as their victim happened to be the Imo State Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Lady Chioma Ogoke.
She was kidnapped by gun-totting men in Owerri when she stopped near a popular restaurant in Ikenegbu Layout to buy recharge card. The commissioner’s official car was abandoned as the kidnappers drove her away in their own vehicle.
No ransom has been demanded as of the time of filing this report. Feelers in the Imo State capital have it that this might just be the baptism of fire for the newly launched anti-kidnapping squad in the state, code named “Operation Rescue”.

SportsNFA Technical Committee Queries Siasia by Ayele12(op): 7:25pm On Oct 09, 2011
The Technical Committee of the Nigeria Football Association (NFA) at an emergency meeting on Saturday night issued a query to Super Eagles’ head coach Samson Siasia.
NFA’s Chief Media Officer Ademola Olajire who disclosed this in a press statement on Sunday in Abuja said the query was over Nigeria’s draw against Guinea on Saturday.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the 2-2 draw ensured the Eagles failed to qualify for the 2012 African Cup of Nations after coming second behind Guinea.
Olajire said NFA Chairman Aminu Maigari had on Saturday ordered that an emergency meeting of the committee be convened to address the way forward for the team.
``This had followed Saturday’s failure of the Nigerian team to qualify for the 2012 African Cup of Nations, after it allowed a late equaliser by Guinea,’’ he said.
The NFA spokesman said the technical committee meeting was attended by members such as Mr Chris Green, Mr. Felix Anyansi-Agwu, Mr. Deji Tinubu, Chief Adegboye Onigbinde and coach Christian Chukwu.
The meeting held at NFA’s Glass House secretariat in Abuja also had in attendance Mr. Austin Okocha, Mr. Victor Ikpeba, Mr. Garba Illa, Mr. Garba Lawal and Dr. Emmanuel Ikpeme.
``The committee queried Siasia and asked him to explain the Eagles’ poor performance in the qualifying series within 48 hours,’’ Olajire said.

CrimeUndergraduate Friends Rape Waitress by Ayele12(op): 6:28am On Oct 09, 2011
Olusola Owolabi, a 200-level student at the Lagos State University (LASU), is currently in police net for allegedly raping a female friend.

Owolabi is not the only one that will be talking to the court, soon, over the rape charge proffered against him. Tayo Adewale, 19 years old last Thursday, is also being quizzed by policemen from Festac Division of the Lagos State Command, over his alleged culpability in the act. Both friends were alleged to have raped a 20-year-old hotel waitress, identified simply as Sandy, while threatening her with knife if she refused their demand. The act reportedly occurred on the day that millions of Nigerians were celebrating the 51st Independence anniversary of the nation from foreign rule.

Sandy was not subjected to the physical smear of being gang-raped for upward four hours alone; she also reportedly suffered psychological trauma as the alleged principal culprit in the act, Owolabi, allegedly took her nude pictures threatening to have them pasted on her social network (facebook) page if she told anyone of the incident. Sandy, who is reportedly currently out of job after being fired from the hotel she worked, claimed she knew Owolabi in the hotel she once worked as stewardess around Festac Town, Lagos. Both Owolabi and Sandy soon became friends. On several occasions, both Owolabi and Sandy exchanged telephone conversation, but unknown to the Anambra Stateborn lady, Owolabi had other plans. On that fateful day, Sandy recalled that she went on job search at Surulere are of the state and was returning home when Owolabi’s call came in.

The undergraduate reportedly asked her to see him at his house for good news he had for her. Since Owolabi had promised to be on the lookout for her for a job, the poor Sandy headed straight to a major hotel at Ago Palace Way, Okota, where Owolabi told her he was meeting with some elderly friends who could be of help to her. Sandy begins her story: “I had problem in my place of work because I did not show up, owing to my father’s illness and I was sacked and in the course of looking for a job, I went to Surulere last Friday and on my way back home, Shola called me on the phone and invited me over to Century Hotel, Ago Palace Way. I went because I needed someone to pour my heart to.” Owolabi would later changed tunes when Sandy arrived, asking her to come with him to his uncompleted apartment house not too far from the area. Owolabi reportedly prevailed on his female visitor to walk him home to allow him change his clothes.

PoliticsOgun Govt Slashes Political Appointees Salaries by Ayele12(op): 6:26am On Oct 09, 2011
In order to cope with the financial situation of the state, Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun has slashed the salaries of political office holders and appointees. Amosun spoke on Thursday, at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta, the state capital, during the 2011 World Teachers’ Day celebration.
He said the slash would enable the state save funds for infrastructural development. Amosun said: “In spite of the poor financial position of the state, we pay salaries and were the first to pay the new minimum wage. We also added N250 to it to show that we love our workers. “The least you will expect is that the workers would be dedicated to their duties and pay all levies and taxes stipulated by the law. Tax has a law that governs it and it must be obeyed. We are all affected by it, politicians are not left out.
“Never in the history of this state have political office holders and appointees collected so low as salary. When I discovered that we needed a lot of funds to develop the state, I sent a bill to the Assembly to reduce the salary of political office holders and appointees. “All of us are affected, even I. As we speak, my commissioners don’t have accommodation and cars, and workers know we are making all these sacrifices to make this state great again.
